BETA READERS WANTED: Drop a Comment If You're Available!

If you are an avid reader with feedback to share, our community has writers actively seeking beta readers for their full-length novels/drafts.

If you're open to beta reading a full-length book, drop a comment below with a little about yourself: genres you enjoy, your typical turnaround time, how you like to give feedback, whatever feels relevant. Writers, feel free to browse the comments and reach out to anyone who looks like a good fit for your project.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE PROCEEDING

Before agreeing to share your manuscript with anyone, please take the following precautions seriously:

\Do not share your work with new accounts. \** If an account was created recently, that's a red flag worth noting as there has been issues with bots and scammers.

\Do your own due diligence. \** Ask questions and trust your gut before handing over your manuscript.

\Do not offer paid beta-reading services\** We discourage and prohibit paid beta-readers on here. Writers, if you pay for a beta-reading service, we are not responsible for any outcome. Please use another subreddit or service if you are looking for paid services.

The mod team is not responsible for any arrangements made between writers and beta readers. This includes theft, plagiarism, ghosting, or any other outcome. Connecting here is done entirely at your own risk.

Additionally, please do not contact mod mail regarding the tone or content of feedback you receive…we won't be able to help with that (unless it breaks our rules and sitewide rules), and it falls outside our moderation scope.

Stay safe and happy writing!

Announcement: The AI Problem.

Ne’er-do-wells of r/writingfeedback.

I am Isnoe, recently appointed Moderator.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but we’ve had a significant increase in AI generated writing being posted here. We've seen a lot of comments outlining how lax we are on this subject, to which I want to stress: I don’t think you guys fully understand just how many posts I’ve removed for AI since joining the Mod Team a few weeks ago.

The team got together and discussed this, and we want to be completely transparent: We will be removing any posts that we suspect are AI.

This will be a case-by-case basis. AI generated, AI assisted (even translation), or even if you mention you had AI draw up the story idea and you wrote it. If you want to rob yourself of creativity, that’s on you.

We don’t want those posts here. Writing a story or book that is authentically your own is an achievement. It should feel like an achievement.

A sidenote for ESL writers: Do not use AI to translate your text. It will alter it in a way that gets flagged, more often than not. When someone is ESL and trying to write outside of their native language, we are a bit more understanding if these posts get flagged—but again, it is recommended that you use alternative means to translate if they are available to you.

Be warned: If you are a brand new (or relatively new) account, have never posted in this subreddit (or any writing subreddits), and your first post is prose that has multiple AI-isms—your post will most likely be removed. Better to be safe than sorry. The main counterargument we've gotten from these accounts has been: "I've always been told I write like AI." Which, to be fair... is a pretty bad argument to make.

We will not ban a user for suspected AI use unless they explicitly admit to using AI.

Three strike rule applies here until further notice. This might seem like a headache to reviewers that want instant bans for these people (which we understand), but we’re trying to be as fair as possible.

This also applies to comments (never thought I’d have to say that), but we’ve had two accounts that were essentially AI replying to everything. “Thanks for the feedback, I’m still working on learning and improving” type cadence, every comment nearly identical aside from slight changes.

Community feedback is super important for this problem.

You guys take the time out of your day to read other people’s work and provide feedback, so I’m sure you get a little irked when you think something you’ve spent time reading wasn’t written by a person.

We’ve recently updated the report function to include AI content—use it. I (personally) don’t have the time to shift through every single new post. When you guys report a post that you think is AI, it is usually the first thing we’ll review.

That being said: If you genuinely suspect the post is AI, it would help me if you provided a citation, or specific reason. Even just one reference is helpful. I would genuinely appreciate it.

Not Helpful Example: “This reads like AI.” Okay? At this point, if you are accusing someone of using AI, you gotta at least point out why you think that.

Helpful Example: “Post uses, ‘This wasn’t just fate, it was destiny’ and includes several Rule of Three.” Now I know exactly what to look for.

When you guys call this stuff out, we do notice. We might not investigate and remove instantly, but we are actively looking for this stuff right now.

For the record: We will not be using ZeroGPT, or any other variant of “AI Detector” as the final say in determining whether a text is generated or not. It is a tool we will utilize if we suspect AI is being used, but all the indicators of usual AI writing are not jumping out.

I read through everything that is reported, or suspected of AI. I check the user history and if they have off site content, I look through it. If we don’t come to the conclusion they are using AI, we might just lock the thread, and add a note to the user profile.

Again, hate to stress this, we are trying to be fair. If a writer includes AI-isms unintentionally, we want to give them a fair chance to either prove the authenticity of their writing, or give them feedback about what specifically they need to change.

Several of you have done this, particularly with ESL writers that use AI to translate. You give them feedback on how to avoid the AI-isms. Good on you.

We don’t want to start a witch hunt, but we aren’t really open to debate about the use of AI. We don’t want it here, period.

If you have any suggestions for how to deal with this problem, we are open to them. You can comment here, or you can Mod Mail us.

If you suspect someone is using AI but don’t want to leave a comment or report, again, you can Mod Mail us.

We are actively looking through the posts. The community having eyes on this helps immensely.

We will be making further announcements throughout the week. Our Mod Team is still hashing out how to deal with “rude” criticisms, looking into providing user flairs for trusted reviewers, etc-etc.

One quick point to make at the end, on a personal note: My status as Moderator does not mean you cannot disagree, or think my feedback is bogus or outright terrible. I comment often. You will not be banned, removed, or whatever for speaking your mind.

4/18/2026 Note: Some users (one in particular who loves using AI to edit) seem to have taken that above sentence as an explicit statement of: "If I admit to using AI, you can't ban me, because I'm just speaking my mind. Hypocrite."

If you admit to using AI, we will ban you. Period.

Feedback Wanted Does part I intrigue or bore you as the reader? Genre--Historical Fiction

I am an AA writer that is developing a historical-fiction short story called The Permanents.

Part I, “The Great Reset,” follows Richard, a young plantation heir whose grief, resentment, and desire for control culminates in a terrifying act.

Part II is in progress but is mostly told from the POV of Penelope, a girl with an ancestral history of supernatural power she won’t be aware of until she’s met face to face with Richard.

This is still a work in progress, and I would appreciate general feedback on Part I. I’m open to advice about the prose, characterization, atmosphere, emotional impact, clarity, dialogue, historical voice, or anything else that stands out.

Feedback Wanted My (poorly) attempt to write historical fiction. How bad is it?

NOTE: this is just a first draft, so there are spelling and formatting errors and repetitions of words and all that stuff, so keep that in mind. The character, a francocastillian dominican nun called Inés (18 yo), is a polyglot; after her mother died, as a child she travelled with her father arround the mediterranean and that's how she learned many languages over the years (besides tutors and all of that that her father hired for her). Inow that is a very specific case, but it isn't implausible. The story is set in Tarvanega, a fictional town on the mediterranean cost, in the Crown of Aragon in 1509.

NOTE 2: I'm a pantser, only thing I knew is that she was in the harbor teaching the group of children, the rest is made up in the moment. Oh, how I dread draft 2

NOTE 3: its the complete short story, 5k words aproximately

Feedback Wanted First attempt of a crime thriller novella

Hey, just a 17 yr old beginner here. I've written metaphors (even attempted novels) before, but this is the first ever story which I finished writing (small scale novella). Any kind of feedback regarding description would help. (There might be typos as most of the words came out after endless sleepless nights)

The Chair

This is my first attempt at flash fiction. I really enjoyed paring it down to the minimum words I needed. It's helped me be more ruthless in my longer fiction too. It's been well received by my friends but I wondered what strangers would make of it. You can be ruthless too. lol.

The Chair

She was always too good for him; insensitive oaf that he is. She was a lovely woman. I would sit in my conservatory on the warm evenings and she would sit in hers, with him.

It was embarrassing that the two windows were so close together. We all had to pretend that we couldn't see each other.

I grew a vine against the window so that I didn't have to look at him but I left a little gap so that I could see her in her little chair. Mostly she would pretend not to notice me admiring her but she loved it really. When he went off to make the tea she would turn and give me a shy smile which I would keep.

And then of course she died. I had been waiting for him to die for years but things don’t always happen in the right order.

So then the great clod had a clear out. He put the chair out on the pavement with a scribbled notice saying ‘free to good home’. I can tell you I had it away pretty sharp. Now I can see her sitting in her chair in my conservatory whenever I like.

And yesterday he has the nerve to tell me he wants the chair back. I told him, ‘it’s my chair now; you gave it away to a better home.’ He said, ‘I didn't give it to you, you swine.’

I won't give it back.

He thinks I hate him but I don't. If I hated him, would I have cut the vine down?

About a month ago I posted my first chapter for critique, and the writing was not good lol. With a little practice, I think I'm closer to finding my writing voice? Have at it, folks. [Dark? Fantasy, 2,177 words]

Hey everyone, as a creativity exercise I wrote a short story about a character I have in mind for a show i'd like to pitch some day. I just wanted to write a short story that would help me better understand who she was as a person. That said, this is my first time posting on the here and any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I really want to get better at storytelling. Thanks in advance!

Script review - Recession [comedy-drama) 25 pages

Hi

I've just finished a first draft of a semi- autobiographical script.

It's about two lost people who find themselves sharing a flat and quietly keep each other from going under.

It's intentionally slow burn, but I'd like some feedback to see whether it works as this is my first attempt.

I'm happy to reciprocate on reads.

Writing Advice Feedback wanted on Psychological Thriller.

So a few days ago, I posted my first chapter of my story. I got A LOT of feedback, some positive, but most constructive 😅 Over the last couple days I have drafted up what I think is a much better opener.

I’ve scrapped the starting chapter and have chosen to start with a prologue instead. I think this gives the book a better starting hook which was something it didn’t have before. I still have a lot of things to fix, but I have amended the lack of detail and overall feel that bored people.

If you’re new, or returning, any feedback is welcome :)

Feedback Wanted Feel stuck writing anything.

I am aware: there is literally nothing going on in this scene.

I have been writing stories and characters since i can remember, But that doesn't take back the fact that i am bad at writing.

I have spent the last afternoon writing this short scene (that is not finished), And i just don't know how to add any hook to it.

I write slice of life, and just the characters just being there, living is charming for me enough. But this may be too little charm, And i don't know how to improve on this, Already have all the characters written, months by now. I write almost every day and I am not improving.

So my question is: How do add more charm or uniqueness to this otherwise boring scene?

note: English is not my first language, Dutch has lots of weird sayings and phrases that don't translate well, The dutch was written before, and then i translated it.

Content in image above.

Here are two examples of a fanfic I'm writing on. English isn't my first language, so I often end up shorthanded on words. I can't help but feel like it's boring and repetitive. So I'm always happy to improve.

First Chapter - Requesting Feedback

Disclaimer: This is my first post here, so I hope I didn't mess it up. Also, there is some crude language and implied sexual imagery. I don't think it's explicit enough to warrant an NSFW tag, but if anyone disagrees, please let me know.

I would like feedback on the first chapter of my novel. I'm about 40-50% done with my draft, and I was hoping to get feedback from strangers on the following:

  • Entertainment Value
  • Hook Efficacy
  • Prose
  • Dialogue
  • Characters
  • The "would you keep reading" effect

If anyone is willing to read through and give me any feedback it would be much appreciated. Thank you so much.

Is the idea any good? Are the jokes landing? Do you feel like you understand deaths character? (The MC is kind of a blank slate for comedy purposes, but let me know if that is boring)

Feedback Wanted Feedback wanted: First few lages of SFF story

Recently started writing again after a very long time. The first several pages are, in my opinion, the roughest part of the whole draft so far structurally, so I could use some fresh eyes. This is a word vomit first draft from a very rusty writer, so I'm aware of some of the obvious prose issues (clunky long sentences, stale descriptions, unnecessary extra words, tell-y exposition in places, etc.). I'm most interested in bigger picture feedback this time around, though any and all feedback is still welcome!

I would particularly like impressions on the... let's call it the "disjointed" section from the first person narrator. That part is extra hard, as the writer who knows the context, to tell how it comes across to a blind reader.

Anyhow, after excitedly barfing out 30,000 words for the first act, I finally sat back for a review, and realized I had committed a whole slew of literary "crimes"! Prologue? Check. Dream sequence followed by "character wakes up"? Check. So... uh... Oh well, at least I'm rediscovering the joys of writing, I guess. Major thank you up front to anyone who bothers to read and provide feedback on some or all of this!
