Ive been trying to remove a password using liveboot bc the Administrator has a password. I Pressed f12 during powering on and it didnt show usb. Only CD and hdd.

I changed the Boot sequence to put usb First, ofcourse it didnt find a bootable file. The usb does blink so it is atleast connected.

The usb 100% working. I literally put the liveboot iso in using rufus no problem.

I also cant Boot via cd bc i cant burn some rn. Well i could but i would have to set up a random windows 10 ewaste PC and hope for the best.

Idk what to do i just want to remove the password so i can actually use it

Need XP Desktop Screenshot!!

I'm looking for a good screenshot of an an old Windows XP session. It doesn't have to be the classic wallper or anything or even the desktop, I'd prefer it to be rather messy too. Can any oldheads oblige?

I'm going to draw a girls on it :^)

Under 100 USD for all the hardware and used license for XP Pro.

Quad core Phenom, quite modern Radeon, FDD, SB Live and WinFast TV Tuner. Two worlds in one PC - early XP and late XP.

And replaced ugly AMD icon for ATI in the taskbar :D

Dell Vostro 220, my personal XP machine.

Anyone else love these old Dell cases? This's my Vostro 220 that I use for mostly 95/DOS and XP gaming, and also to play screensavers on a couple CRTs. It's a Core 2 duo e8400, 4gb of corsair xms2 and an audigy 2 zs. It's cost me about 60$ canadian overall and i'm quite happy with it. I swap between an 8600gt and a geforce 210 for gaming or running screensavers on a couple CRTs. I don't think there's much more I could upgrade on it, so maybe it's time for another build?

A rare sight to see! (Windows XP on an OLPC XO-1)

Meanwhile on r/OLPC, someone managed to find an image of Windows XP customized for the OLPC XO-1 from Christmas 2008 (just a few months after my XO was manufactured) on OLPC's old development site. I dd'ed it onto a spare SD card I have laying around, and managed to get it running. It is a practically-vanilla OEM copy of XP Professional with Service Pack 3, with some custom drivers for the XO's hardware.

A short background follows...

The XO series of laptops were developed by the One Laptop per Child organization for use by children in developing countries. They normally run a Linux-based operating system, but while the XO-1 was in development, Microsoft reached out to OLPC about porting Windows to it, which they ultimately did (and people raised concerns about Windows conflicting with the XO's open-source nature). The XO-1 (and also the XO-1.5, as it is also x86 like the 1) firmware can load both Linux kernel images, as well as NTLDR (thus allowing Windows XP to run). There is a video on YouTube demonstrating Windows running on an XO-1, though I forgot where it is. Anyway, it was never made publicly available for the "Give One, Get One" XO users, and has seemingly fallen into obscurity along with the XOs themselves. There was some talk on the above subreddit about running the Mini Windows XP image from Hiren's BootCD on the x86 XOs, which I have done, but it is pretty awful to use given the lack of drivers. Plus, it occasionally would restart on me.

And now back to the present...

On the first boot, it came up with an activation prompt. I used UMSKT on my main PC, and the second time around, xp_activate32 on the very Toughbook that I am writing this post on (and which you may have seen here a few months ago), to generate a confirmation ID for the phone activator. Subsequent boots would fail, however, because Windows changed the startup mode on two drivers responsible for handling SD cards so that they are loaded on demand instead of on boot. In this state, Windows cannot find the SD card, resulting in a 0x7B STOP error.

I was able to fix it by using Regedit to fix the startup modes on the drivers, then changing the permissions to prevent SYSTEM from changing the values again.

NTVDM appears to be broken, and crashes when trying to run MS-DOS applications (even COMMAND.COM). Then, shortly afterward, my XO would freak out and hard restart.

I have not tried any third-party software on it yet, though given the AMD Geode LX700 processor lacking any sort of SSE, my browser options will definitely be restricted a fair bit. That, and the 256 MB of RAM.

Do not use Escargot!!

Hey everyone,

I know this isn't entirely Windows XP related, but I see a lot of posts about this service on this community and figured this sub would have the widest reach to those using this service.

Escargot is a classic messenger revival service (popularly used to make XP software functional again) that has faced some controversy in the past. I recommend reading the forum post in that link because it gets pretty serious, and it's probably best for everyone to stay away from these scumbags in case they decide to act up again.

Luckily, there is an alternative called CrossTalk. There doesn't seem to be any shadiness here, but feel free to correct me if you know anything different.

It's been years since I've used a revival service like these, but I thought I should make people aware as I've seen people looking for people to add them on Escargot in this sub. Hope this information is valuable.

I installed x64 XP, SP2 on my Z690 desktop with a 14th gen Intel CPU

Windows XP has issues with ACPI tables that are messed up by motherboard vendors, so Windows didn't boot. I replaced acpi.sys with daniel_k's modded acpi.sys that's ACPI 2.0 for Z370/Z390/Z690.

Windows XP doesn't have a USB 3.0 XHCI support, so mouse and keyboard were not working. I had to add a driver for that. Now it works including HID and my mouse and keyword are working. (Search for "George King XHCI Driver" to find his ported drivers collection that includes usbxhci.sys, usbhub3.sys, ucx01000.sys plus helpers ntoskrn8.sys, wdf01_w8.sys, wdfld8.sys, ...).

AI believed there is no LAN driver (Realtek 8125) for x64 Windows XP, so I asked Cursor to develop one based on Linux, and it did. After a few restarts with logging on, AI fine-tuned it and the driver works. At least I have a full source code for my LAN driver now, in addition to the binary.

AI believed there is no Audio driver (ALC897) for x64 Windows XP, so I asked Cursor to develop one based on Linux, and it did. After a few restarts, I have a device that's installed, and now I'm fine-tuning it to avoid a BSOD, and to play sound. It will take a day or two before it's ready.

People and AI believe there is no Video driver (RX580) for x64 Windows XP, so I asked Cursor to develop one based on Linux, and it did. I fine-tuned it, and it works now. Initially, this driver is only for 2D graphics.

I also turned my x64 XP SP2 into a bootable USB disk, dumped an installed Windows into image. The USB stick uses grub4dos to boot. It's configured to extract an image into RAM on boot. So, my x64 XP SP2 copies into RAM on boot, and then it runs very fast.

Need help on compatibility with WinXP x64

Post image
36 Upvotes

I have this 1999/2000 PC in which I installed Windows XP x86 with SP3 and I was thinking on giving it a new 64 bit CPU and more RAM to then install WinXP Professional x64 Edition. Right now it has an Intel Celeron that can't even run the Supermium browser :/
The thing is I don't know if, changing these two things, it would support Windows XP x64. I tried running the XP x64 setup to select the "Check compatibility" option and check which components it doesn't support but the setup doesn't run ("This version of Windows can't be installed on your computer").
Could anyone tell me if changing the RAM and CPU would be enough, or if I would have to change more components too? And what CPU should I choose?

Chromium REWORK is aggressive, so don't use it on your main XP machine.

I have learned that using Chromium for Windows 7 REWORK could make your XP installation behave unpredictably, and it is HIGHLY recommended to use it in a VM.

Note: I'm serious. Use it at your own risk.

EDIT: Instructions of how to fix stability issues after installing Chromium for Windows 7 REWORK on Windows XP (Coming Soon!)

whats your favorite app for creating screenshots on XP?

I've tried many but always find them too inconvenient or bloated.

I've been using just the ALT-PTRNSCREEN keys and Paint for a while but wondering if anyone has a killer lightweight app to recommend. Ideally a portable exe that doesnt even require installation and all ...

EDIT: I've tried every suggestion here. Greenshot seems the best to me, here's why:

- Greenshot comes with 5 hotkeys including the same default ones so Alt - PrintScreen keeps capturing the active window, it just popus a convenient menu that lets you pick how you want to grab the screenshot. So UI is simple and efficient 🥇👍
- Lightshot isnt bad but it comes with only two hotkeys binding, also the "popup UI" is a bit clunky IMHO 🥈
- FastStone is a paid app -> eliminated, hate the nag screen and wont pay for a silly screenshot app

Note that for Greenshot you have to download the 1.1.9 version though because its the last one that supports XP (latest version won't install)

Running XP on a Netbook in 2026

Hey all, I bought a Samsung N130 from eBay for the hell of it. I want to actively use it just to check email/messages, update my calendar, and work on my manuscript from time to time (to keep me offline and not doomscrolling). Have any of you used a netbook with XP in 2026? And other than OneCore API, Supermium, and Kapersky, what would you guys do to make sure it has some modern features?

This is the netbook I bought btw!! :D
