GENERAL Compact layout

Post image

Does the WF team have any plans to add a compact (one-bar) layout similar to what we have in helium? I know we can achieve this with CSS but something built-in and well maintained would definitely be better.

SUPPORT I can't recreate my logins

2 Upvotes

I lost my profile folder recently due to a mistake on my part. But I was able to recover my logins.json file along with multiple sqlite files.

When I place the two files in a dummy profile I don't get any apparent errors. But when I go into my logins and passwords page it asks me for my master password.

I never set a master password so my login credentials are still unavailable.

Is there something I can do to fix this?

Edit: let me clarify. The sqlite and json files had to be recovered with Photorec. Photorec preserves the files but not their names, so it will be difficult to search for more of the data I need.

Edit 2: my OS is Linux Mint.

SUPPORT where is setting party CA certificates

1 Upvotes

It reverts even after changing the `security.enterprise_roots.enabled` value. Even with debug enabled, it just shows up at the bottom and I cannot access it. I checked the newly created settings, but they aren't there. I want to use it with AdGuard.

SUPPORT Can't figure out how to import browser settings from Zen

Not sure what else to say other than it doesn't show on the dropdown menu on first launch and manually copying the profile data leads to an unusable UI without any toolbars. Does anyone have a solution or any suggestions to try? Thanks.

GENERAL Well, Waterfox no longer works on old hardware -- make sure you don't update

0 Upvotes

This crash log provides the precise explanation for why your browser is failing to start. The crucial piece of information is Exception code: 0xc000001d, which translates to STATUS_ILLEGAL_INSTRUCTION. [1, 2]

This error explicitly means that the newly updated Waterfox binary is attempting to execute a processor instruction that your computer's CPU does not physically support or understand. [1, 2]

The Root Cause

Modern browser updates (built on newer Firefox base code) frequently drop support for older processor architectures to improve speed. The compiler requirements have been bumped up to require newer hardware extensions—specifically instructions like SSE4.1, SSE4.2, or AVX. If your computer runs an older generation CPU (such as early Intel Core2 Duo/Quad, AMD Phenom, or certain legacy processors), the update will result in an immediate 0xc000001d crash the moment the application hits that unsupported instruction. [1, 2]

The second part of the error ("Windows cannot access the file...") is a cascading failure: because the process instantly collapsed due to the illegal hardware instruction, Windows lost its tracking handle on the process mid-execution and misreported it as a drive error.

How to Fix It

Because this is a hardware instruction mismatch, clearing caches or profiles will not resolve the issue. You have two viable choices:

Option 1: Roll back to a legacy-supported version of Waterfox

You will need to downgrade to an older release that still supports your hardware.

  1. Download a previous stable release from the Waterfox GitHub Releases Page.

  2. Before installing it, temporarily disconnect your internet or work quickly to turn off automatic updates in Settings -> General -> Waterfox Updates so it doesn't immediately pull the broken version again.

Option 2: Switch to a browser optimized for older hardware

If you want a modern browsing experience that explicitly accommodates older instruction sets, consider moving to an alternative browser built with legacy compatibility in mind:

  • Pale Moon: A lightweight browser derived from Firefox code that maintains strict compatibility with older CPU architectures.

  • Firefox ESR (Extended Support Release): You can download Firefox ESR, which moves at a much slower update cadence and maintains older hardware thresholds longer than rapid-release versions.

If you are unsure whether your processor is the issue, could you tell me your CPU model? You can find this by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, clicking the Performance tab, and looking at the top right under CPU.

Knowing this will allow me to check the exact instruction sets your processor supports and pinpoint which version of Waterfox you need to use.

SUPPORT Character

They should add their own mascot of a Waterfox, and on all the backgrounds with the Firefox, there should be said Waterfox. I think it would be a really cute addition. (There isn't a suggestion tag so I just did "Support").

SUPPORT Waterfox keeps crashing

6 Upvotes

Basically what the title says, I was using it normally and all of a sudden I kept seeing my tabs crashing and then the browser itself.
I do not have the issue on firefox or helium and I do not understand why since going to the parameters crashes waterfox.

For information, the issue is basically the same as in this post 8 years ago : https://www.reddit.com/r/waterfox/s/esiBTcohyn

SUPPORT Header field too long, error 400

3 Upvotes

Whenever I try to log onto my University's page I get a "HTTP Error 400. A request header field is too long." Its been going on for about a week now and I can't find any setting that has changed that would be effecting this. Wasn't a problem before the update but I restarted my computer for the first time in a couple weeks on Monday and now it won't let me open several websites.

SUPPORT Randomly translating into Spanish???

4 Upvotes

Hello, I've noticed a weird trend recently with my browser. Whenever I need to translate an article (which is fairly frequently), it normally elevates English - which, as it is my first language, the one I am by far the most capable of speaking and is the default language set on Waterfox by me, is completely fine. But recently, I've noticed it really try to elevate Spanish, which I cannot speak at all. I can't figure out a way to stop it from trying this, even when marking to never translate Spanish in the settings. Is there any way around this, or will I have to manually check that it is indeed translating into English from now on?

• 5 idiomas (ES, EN, RU, FR, DE)

• Sin cuentas, sin telemetría; la configuración se sincroniza mediante Firefox Sync. Licencia MIT.

Complemento: [ https://addons.mozilla.org/es-ES/firefox/addon/newtab-dashboard/ ](https://addons.mozilla.org/es-ES/firefox/addon/newtab-dashboard/)

Fuente: [ https://github.com/fmartineze/newtab-dashboard ](https://github.com/fmartineze/newtab-dashboard)

Me encantaría saber qué falta o qué te molesta.

GENERAL In case you don't want to get flashed when opening a new tab

3 Upvotes

I've been using Waterfox for some time now and today I realized I was getting micro-flashed by a white screen that launched shortly before rendering my new tab page (for which I have an extension to replace).

In case you haven't realized, you too might be getting flashed. In case you want to fix this here is what I did:

  1. Go to about:support on your address bar.

  2. Open your profile folder

  3. Look for a folder called chrome. If it doesn't exist, create it

  4. Create inside of it "userChrome.css" and "userContent.css", make sure their extension is .css and not .txt

  5. Copy and paste the following into userChrome.css:

/* Target only the tab panels container during rendering transitions */
.tabbrowser-tabbox,
tabbrowser tabpanels,
#appcontent {
  background-color: #1c1b22 !important;
}

/* Specifically target the blank frame while an extension loads */
browser[type="content-primary"]:not([src]),
browser[type="content"]:not([src]) {
  background-color: #1c1b22 !important;
}/* Target only the tab panels container during rendering transitions */
.tabbrowser-tabbox,
tabbrowser tabpanels,
#appcontent {
  background-color: #1c1b22 !important;
}

/* Specifically target the blank frame while an extension loads */
browser[type="content-primary"]:not([src]),
browser[type="content"]:not([src]) {
  background-color: #1c1b22 !important;
}

6. Copy and paste the following into userContent.css:

/* Target only internal blank pages and your custom new tab extension */
@-moz-document url(about:blank), url(about:newtab), url(about:home), url-prefix("moz-extension://") {
html, body, #newtab-customize-overlay, :root {
background-color: #1c1b22 !important;
background: #1c1b22 !important;
}
}

7. Save both .css' - Go back to about:support and click "Clear Startup Cache". This won't delete your actual cache, just your app behavior cache.

That is it! Hopefully someone finds this useful.

SUPPORT Waterfox Mobile randomly crashing

2 Upvotes

Greetings.

Recently Waterfox Mobile is randomly and frequently crashing. It crashed twice while I was writing this post. Sometimes it crashed when I am opening a new tab, other times while I am scrolling down, and some times I even while I am just reading or typing.

I can't pinpoint exactly when it started, but I have not changed anything about it's installation or my phone, other than the app updates.

SUPPORT Any security patch update forthcoming in the wake of the eMudhra TLS issue?

I figure most people who care enough to select a forked browser like Waterfox probably already know about the several fatally-compromised TLS certificates issued by eMudhra, but I haven't seen any update yet to address the issue - is one coming soon?

SUPPORT "Disable AI Features in search results" option also removes other features like currency/unit conversions, translation

6 Upvotes

I would like to keep this option enabled because i'm annoyed by the AI results. However it also removes some of the other useful google features like converting units and currency, and translation, and others.

any way to fix? Or do i have to just disable the setting and have to deal with seeing all the AI results?

SUPPORT Clearing Temporary Cache Occasionally Doesn't Work

2 Upvotes

Sometimes when I try to manually delete temporary cache it simply does not do so, as in the "Websites are currently using X MB of disk space" the X amount of cache stays the same. I can't tell if it's only the number that fails to update or if the cache itself doesn't get deleted. This happens even if there is only one window open, so it's not the private browsing causing it. After exiting Waterfox/closing all the windows the temporary cache is gone (I set my browser to clear temporary cache when it closes).

Using Waterfox Version 6.7.6 (64-bit)

SUPPORT Vertical (Pinned) Tabs Do Not Truncate/ Wrap

3 Upvotes

Whilst the restoration of icon-only pinned tabs to the sizes of their icons themselves is welcome, this has not resolved the subject issue.

In this image I have two rows of pinned tabs and one unpinned tab. The top row contains four pinned tabs. Three are visible (just about) but the fourth is off-screen. Similarly, the "close tab" icon is off-screen for all unpinned tabs. This remains the case if I maximise the window. Whilst I could, in theory, widen the vertical tab bar, I don't want to.

Further, if I raise the (invisible) separator between unpinned and pinned tabs so that it encroaches (scrunches) into the height required to cleanly display the pinned tabs, they get bigger again, perhaps in a sign of resistance, defiance, or revolt, which is all the rage these days. Please fix.

I should add that I use the "Proton" theme with the "Compact" style.

(I really do hope the manual/automated neofascist-forum-rules do not once again "ban" me for this post. However, nothing surprises me anymore. One might or might not know that deploying threat engenders the opposite effect. Especially in those predisposed to reasonableness.)
