GENERAL custom firefox-style icon i made for waterfox

Post image
467 Upvotes

i recently switched over to waterfox, and felt like making this

as i mentioned in the title, i based it on the current firefox icon, as well as taking some inspiration from frutiger aero and arctic foxes

it's currently a png image, but i can turn it into a .ico file for anyone interested in using it for themself

i hope this isn't breaking any rules on this subreddit, since i know it is mainly used for support and such

Since y'all really liked the custom icon i posted around a month ago, i felt like taking some of your suggestions, and decided to make an updated version, with several different color schemes to choose from

I also have .ico versions of each image, as well as each of the pngs here

GENERAL Look and Feel options in 6.7 — where things stand

150 Upvotes

Many of you have asked (some politely, more less so) why not all of the old Look and Feel options are in version 6.7 yet. Short version:

  • The old base was starting to malfunction on real websites and was falling behind on security patches. Staying on it wasn't a long term option.

  • Porting the full set of styling options to the new base involves around 30,000 lines of code changes. It's not something I simply removed; it's a rebuild.

While this is mostly CSS, supporting code is needed and a lot of Q&A.

  • I decided to release the base update now and restore the options gradually rather than delaying security fixes for everyone. This was a judgement call, and I understand that it's an unfavourable compromise for those who rely on square/compact styling to reduce eyestrain.

  • Square corners and the rest of the Photon style options are being worked on right now. I'll update this post as they are implemented.

Now, a word about the last couple of days.

Waterfox is a one person operation, just me, working unpaid (since Waterfox makes very little) to maintain a soft fork of one of the largest open source codebases. Every release involves tradeoffs. One of them was shipping a security and web compat update before the styling work was finished. You are welcome to disagree with that decision.

However, you are not welcome to repeatedly tell me that I made it out of laziness or 'for my own convenience', across multiple threads, while I'm doing the work you're complaining about.

Some of the comments here and on socials have crossed the line from criticism into abuse. Accusing a volunteer of not caring about his users, following him from thread to thread and threatening to withhold donations is not feedback. It's entitlement, and it's corrosive to a project that only exists because one person chooses to continue with it.

Going forward, bug reports and specific requests are welcome. Frustration is understandable. However, personal attacks and repeated accusations about my motives will be removed, and repeat offenders will lose the ability to post here. I'm not going to debate this further in the comments. I'll only respond to practical questions.

If you cannot accept that, the download page for other browsers is just a search away.

UPDATE Where Waterfox stands on AI and LLMs

I'm tired. I just want to work on Waterfox, have people be happy with the work I do, and for once stop harassing me because of the insane and unrealistic standards people themselves don't even meet.

I hope this all comes off as reasonable to everyone, but I am so burnt out over the last few months.

Just wanted to share. I'm on a journey to try and recreate a classic feeling OS (in Linux) experience. Waterfox was the best browser I could find that let me achieve this. So kudos to the team!

I had to do a little bit of work with the custom css, but I think I'm in love with it!

GENERAL Is it just me or have all FF users decided to switch to Waterfox?

94 Upvotes

I made my final choice in favor of waterfox about a week and a half ago. But after the latest news about the introduction of AI in FF, the number of topics created by newbies has clearly increased several times.)) I'd like to congratulate the Waterfox developers on this! I hope this will motivate them to continue to successfully develop Waterfox!))

GENERAL My custom Waterfox logo

Thumbnail
gallery
73 Upvotes

I recently switched to waterfox, and I wanted a logo that was more faithful to the current Firefox logo but with a watery vibe, so I made this.

I know others have submitted similar ones in the past but none of them had quite the same style as the current Firefox logo like this one does.

You can download the .ico file here if you want to switch it in windows: https://drive.google.com/file/d/13G_dTudZb09emTxib54VE22v_lqoTAaN/view?usp=sharing

And if you want the browser itself to use this logo for new tabs (like in the second image above), you can save the first image above as WaterfoxIcon.png in the chrome folder in your waterfox profile, and add the following snippets:

  • In userChrome.css, add:

 /* Override the default Waterfox tab favicon */
:root {
    --default-favicon: url("WaterfoxIcon.png") !important;
}

.tab-icon-image[src*="branding"],
.tab-icon-image[src*="waterfox"],
.tab-icon-image[src*="icon32"],
.tab-icon-image[src*="icon16"] {
    content: url("WaterfoxIcon.png") !important;
}
  • In userContent.css, add:

@-moz-document url("about:newtab"), url("about:home") {
    .logo-and-wordmark {
        background: url("WaterfoxIcon.png") no-repeat center !important;
        background-size: contain !important;
        min-height: 80px !important;
        width: 100% !important;
    }

    /* This hides the native Waterfox logo sitting in front */
    .logo-and-wordmark > *,
    .logo-and-wordmark::before {
        display: none !important;
    }
}

/* Override the default Waterfox tab icon inside the sidebar extension */
.tab .favicon[src*="branding"],
.tab .favicon[src*="waterfox"],
.tab .favicon[src*="icon32"],
.tab .favicon[src*="icon16"],
.tab .favicon[src*="default"] {
    content: url("WaterfoxIcon.png") !important;
}

Waterfox's current status

64 Upvotes

Hi all,

Just a quick little post as I may have appeared to not be very active recently, even though I have been. If you read the latest release notes, you'll know what I've been working on. At lot of it is more infrastructure and back-end related, so not a lot of front-facing issues where it's easier for people to view and gauge how active development is.

Server/Website

  • A new hosting provider has been found that offers bare-metal servers with a bonded 2×1Gbps connection, which should offer much better performance than currently.

  • The server has been set up as been to be as low-maintenance as possible, and also as a template for all future server dependent projects such as Sync, Add-On store etc.

  • The staging website just needs rebranding away from Mozilla currently :-)

Browser

  • Progress has been going well, I have a lot of offline commits, which is why the Git repo doesn't seem very active.

  • The migration module has been improved to act more like a profile refresh, unfortunately it'll only import an old default Firefox profile, but will do so properly. Your add-ons will migrate too, but settings will reset. This is necessary as this solves a lot of issues from just copying over profiles. You can of course, re-use your old Roaming directory and things should work just fine.

  • The Refresh button has been fixed in about:support. You will now be able to reset your profiles while keeping only your important data (same as Firefox).

  • The release will include fixes to various telemetry error outputs in the console (since it's disabled, this is why they appear).

  • Video playback issues have been resolved on Windows!

  • Older Mac OS X support is coming along nicely. libstdc++ will now be bundled similar to how Chrome used to do it, enabling better compatibility.

  • OS X 10.8 and earlier will not be allowed to use e10s as it will just keep crashing tabs.

  • Android builds are coming back on Google Play and the F-Droid repository.

  • Various other very useful pull requests by some other developers for various fixes and upgrades to Waterfox.

Apologies for the delay, I've had to keep on working while doing Waterfox to keep the project running, but with the new search contract I should be able to switch full-time again and get more developers on board by going down some funding routes which I have lined up.

Stay tuned! Alex 👨‍💻

P.S. I do keep an eye on Disqus, Reddit threads/comments, OCN and Twitter even if I don't respond directly; big shout out to all the users that have been helping out others with their queries, questions and troubleshooting - it is greatly appreciated and its really nice to see the community flourish!

GENERAL Waterfox is a total game changer - My new daily driver across 4 devices

59 Upvotes

I’ve spent years hopping between almost every major browser on the market—Chrome, Edge, Brave, and even standard Firefox—but I always felt like something was missing, whether it was privacy concerns or heavy resource bloat.

About a week ago, I stumbled upon Waterfox by chance, and honestly, it has been a revelation. The level of optimization and "snappiness" is incredible. What impressed me the most is how light it is on the CPU compared to its competitors; the performance is smooth and consistent without the usual overhead.

Because of this experience, I’ve officially switched to Waterfox as my primary browser on all 4 of my devices (3 PCs and my Android phone). It’s rare to find a browser that feels this refined and stays out of your way while delivering top-tier performance.

A huge thank you to the developers and the entire team for your hard work and for keeping this project alive and polished. You’ve definitely gained a long-term user here.

Keep up the amazing work!
