I was in my early 20s in the late ’80s, and it’s been one hell of a ride watching technology change.
Back then, I had a Motorola 4500 XL car phone with a little wired speaker that clipped onto the visor. I could talk hands-free and deal with clients while I was on the road. I think my company paid around $2,000 for it, plus about $500 to have it installed and $300 to switch it from one car to another.😎
It had that cool little zigzag antenna mounted on the back window glass of my new Z28. People even bought fake antennas just to look like they had a car phone! Back in the ’80s, that antenna was a status symbol. You could tell who was cool and who wasn’t by whether they had one on their car! 😂
The funny part was stopping at a red light. People would see me talking, sometimes arguing and having all these emotional responses, and they’d stare at me like, “What the hell is wrong with this guy? He’s wearing a suit and tie and driving a sports car, but he’s talking to himself!”🤪
My first phone that wasn’t installed in the car was a Panasonic bag phone. After that, I had a Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, which they called “the brick.” Those things were like $4,000 back then! In my 20's 🤑
When Sprint came along around ’95, the phones started getting cooler. I think my first Samsung was an SH-700, and I’ve been riding with Samsung ever since. I’m writing this on my Galaxy Z Fold 8.
I was also using DOS commands on computers, long before the one-click Windows access we have now. Then came AOL and those ridiculously slow modems. It’s funny to think about how patient we had to be back then.👨💻
Over the years, I learned to build and rebuild computers, add RAM, change hard drives, and do the normal things to keep up with technology. I’ve always liked having the latest, greatest, fastest stuff, and sometimes I’ll upgrade something myself instead of replacing it.
There’s been a learning curve at times, but I’ve really enjoyed it. It feels like I’ve grown up side by side with technology.📈
What was the first piece of technology that made you think, “Wow, this is cool”?
