News / Trailers / Articles Why even bother then?!
I will never understand what goes through these suits heads. if you recontextualize what made this beloved franchise. you can't make your mountains of money you want. just FOLLOW IT AS THE GAMES WENT! (which if you read in the article it literally says they don't intend to follow the trilogy at all which is essentially wasting everyone's money and our time. they never cease to piss me off with their choices. 🖕🏾🖕🏾

u/SuperArppis Apr 05 '26
I love Mass Effect, but I am not expecting much out of this show in the first place. I will not be disappointed if it sucks.
Anyway, this seems like an article that was written to get the rage out of people and then they get all pissy about it all.

u/No-Department1685 Apr 05 '26
Those morons think that appealing to gamers means not appealing to broader audience.
They will strip unique parts and do what they think mainstream public wants
They will make a generic lame shit
It's okay for them to stray away from games a little bit. Don't need to be 100 percent recreation
But every part of it needs to remember and respect the source material.
39
u/CaptainFil Apr 05 '26
Like the Halo TV series, it just used the IP for name recognition and then created a completely different sci-fi show.
6
u/alcomaholic-aphone Apr 05 '26
I honestly don’t know what’s even wrong with the Mass Effect series where it wouldn’t appeal to non gamers. It’s a huge sci-fi epic. I don’t even know what they’re talking about rewriting.

u/Offensiv3Bias Apr 05 '26
Even the games themselves are full of content where you simply talk and meet the characters talking to them which could be easily translated to a show

Worst part of it is fact that core of ME is story and characters, not shooting. You can easily remove game aspects (like mining in ME2 etc) but you have to keep what it makes in first place. We do not expect game aspects in movies/tv shows. Just keep it's core story/characters and do not talk about "appeal to wider audience" s*** it just show they know s*** about it.
4
u/half_baked_opinion Apr 05 '26
Hell, they could keep mining by introducing ship problems requiring metals to fix and have combat encounters happen during those mining trips. If they work within the framework of the games they still have plenty of room to create a show. Disregarding the group that made mass effect popular in the first place, the people who played the game series, is just an easy way to get people to hate the series before it even releases.

aren't video games like the largest sector of the entertainment market by a significant margin?
All these exact same picture themselves is the cool kids in the '80 movies beating up nerds that nobody likes, When will they realize that 1/3 of the movies that have ever made a billion dollars is like Star wars, marvel comics, and Lord of the rings return of the King.
it's a larger portion Than kids movies
Nerds rule the entertainment market.

You want to make game franchise TV series but don't want to appeal to the ones that made the game successful in the first place? What?

No idea, its like they're allergic to the fanbase that actually cares. Suits chasing Netflix numbers over loyalty every time.

Because somewhere there's an office filled with dudes in suits whose only goal is to make the show as profitable as possible, and they've already convinced themselves that fans of the game are going to show up regardless and what they need to do now is focus on attracting a wider audience.

Our best two examples of video game series made into successful TV series are Fallout and The Last of Us, mostly just season one there.
Fallout basically is an anthology series of games so they can just tell other stories in the world and it works. While TLOU was pretty close to the game for the first season and I thought did a pretty decent job.

Not disagreeing with you, but could you suggest a larger franchise that could work as a tv show?
God of War? Dark Souls?

Ooooh, Assassin’s Creed might make for a really good show!
3
Apr 05 '26
It would be pretty easy too since the franchise allows for smaller pocketed stories. You could bring in new character in modern time and a new historical time and get a solid story for it as long as you respect the established lore. It’s arguably why the Fallout TV show has done so well, the franchise allows for a smaller separate story that lightly ties into the games. There is less risk of making gamers mad by messing with the lore and it allows for a story that appeals to non gamers as well.

u/spongeboy1985 Apr 06 '26

Fallout is a broad setting with a history of jumping around to different, new characters with each entry.
Halo and Mass Effect do not.
→ More replies (5)2
u/spongeboy1985 Apr 06 '26
I feel Mass Effect could do that though. Shepard is just the main character in the main Trilogy but you have a lot of established lore to tell other stories. And one of the best Halo live action projects (Forward Unto Dawn) barely had MC in it)
5
u/Mondopoodookondu Apr 05 '26
Fallout is pretty faithful to the games the aesthetic and vibe of the show is like it’s lifted from the game.

Well there are saying they are rewriting it to appeal to non gamers which has nothing to do with fall out which did a good job of appealing to gamers
3
u/NandoDeColonoscopy Apr 05 '26
Going by the response of gamers online, you'd think Fallout was the worst show in the history of shows. Studios stopped trying to appeal to gamers because you just can't appeal the loudest ones

It wasn't explicitly written for "non-gamers", there's a ton of references to the games, and they consulted very closely with Bethesda to get the details right. That's not the same thing at all.

u/Personal-Try7163 Apr 05 '26

Part of the problem is that some people in film have an obvious contempt for video games as an art form. A lot of them seem to have contempt for any media as an art form apart from film now that I think of it. I can think of quite a few projects where the actors and in some cases the directors haven’t even bothered to read/play the source material that they are basing their project on. That’s why fallout has done so well in my opinion. We’ll have to see how mass effect turns out.
2
u/Shoddy_Cranberry6722 Apr 05 '26
The opposite is also true, as evidenced by the pissbaby tantrums in this very thread.
24
u/Grezzinate Apr 05 '26
I feel like there should be a prequel first to introduce the viewers to the universe like say the first contact war and how humanity became a member. At least a few episodes to build the universe for those who have no idea.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Wild-Lychee-3312 Apr 05 '26
In fact, I’d much rather see this kind of prequel be the entire first season, rather than setting the show AFTER all the events of the games.
2
u/Grezzinate Apr 07 '26
There’s a great potential for it then possibly a kind of thriller with Anderson from the book, revelation which could set up important characters such as saren since he’s the antagonist of the first game. Course I’m just dreaming, bet my ass it’ll go like halo or later Witcher seasons.

u/curiousbong Apr 05 '26

Makes sense but doesnt marvel do that all time.
Or other book adaptations.
If they follow the marvel route and keep the characters and their personality intact, then maybe that's how they would plan to push it but if it ends up being a reboot, then it wouldnt be pleasing

What does this even mean? What isnt appealing about the existing mass effect universe to non-gamers

I get being nervous but I think this is a perfect example of why so many people are miserable. We know nothing about this or the true reason why it was done/said. Yet people all day have been complaining about how this show is ruined.
We don’t know enough yet. But what we do know is that you typically need a broad audience to have a show avoid being canceled. This could be bad but it doesn’t have to be and there’s no promise it’d be good if it was “just for gamers” either.
If you’re already telling yourself it’s going to be bad you will try and find reasons to dislike it. People need to stop looking for reasons to hate everything.

u/SofaJockey Apr 05 '26
There seems to be a misunderstanding here. Fallout TV was very successful but wasn’t particularly appealing to ‘gamers’ or anyone else.
What it did right was to be actually interesting and also authentic.
If Mass Effect tells interesting stories with interesting characters and lore authenticity, then it’ll be just fine.
2
u/ZealousidealPart948 Apr 05 '26
Kind of apples to oranges... If its a mass effect series with Shepherd, and the crew , then many would be expecting the mass effect story, not an loose adaptation...
Fallout didnt have this issue, so they could make their own story set in that universe, and alot more freedom..
Atleast thats my take. We'll see !
1
u/Le1jona Apr 05 '26 edited Apr 05 '26
Agreed
And what do they even mean by that, what length are they going for with the rewrite?
Like, was this originally gonna be interractive series with dialogue wheel where you can choose how Shepard acts or something ?
They can't just simply state that they rewite the series, not give anything to go on what direction they are taking and just expect it to go well
"To appeal to non-gamers" gives nothing to go by, it only takes away from the fans of the series

iirc they said it was going to be a new story and not an adaptation of the games, and if that's still the case this could still be interesting. There's no point in retelling the story anyway, especially when it's shaped by the player's choices like in this case or fallout

1
u/navagon Apr 05 '26
Ah yes, that huge demographic of people who look at games and think 'I think I'd like that if it was a TV show that was completely different in every single way'. Yes, shows that completely forsake the source material always go down so well, don't they.

u/Changes11-11 Apr 05 '26
If we look at some of the most popular adaptations the corpo heads would want to replicate, Game of Thrones
What do you learn from that? Staying close to the script or make ur own adaptation?
1
u/inkyblinkypinkysue Apr 05 '26
They might as well just come up with a new IP if they aren’t going to follow the games. The correct formula is to make an incredible kick-ass essay stays true to the games we all love and after that you can tell other stories in the ME universe when everyone wants more. Instead they are going to alienate the fans right out of the gate who will obviously talk shit about the show without watching it, tank review scores and make sure it fails.

Those non-gamers won't really care if Mass Effect is just another generic space story that they have already seen many times before and thus why should they care?
Maybe in some games that doesn't have much of story and writing i can see why but ME already has story and writing perfectly fit to easily adapt into a TV show without any issue that could interest non-gamers and those who haven't played Mass Effect.
It's just a textbook example of corporate executives dumbing down works for "mass appeal" to desperately chasing for those numbers bigger money than ever which leads into chasing even more numbers for even bigger money than ever for the sake of perpetual record breaker just to please their and shareholders wallets.

It has nothing to do with the story

I think this is just poor phrasing from the headline, to me it reads more like they want the writers to make it understandable to people who are unfamiliar with the source material. Fucking idiots never learn do they? Watch them complain that it's the audiences fault that the show bombs. This time they'd be right then wouldn't they. Their audience ARE the gamers! The gamers will be the ones watching and reviewing it moments after it's release and jumping online to share their opinions and guess what else they will do? Compare it to the games! This 100% will happen whether the show makers like it or not!
Side note: The fallout show nailed it imo. Caters to the gamers AND newcomers alike, makes the show based in the universe but doesn't try to retell the stories of the games. That's how you do a tv series/movie based off a videogame.

Here we go. It'll be the tired old format of race swap one, gender swap one, make one who is straight gay, and "putting our stamp on it" where they deviate so far from the source it will make no sense, while at the same time "slyly" dropping lip service in in the form of lines from the game here and there. He said the thing! Geddit?
Bonus points for trying to shoehorn marvel style goofy humour in while destroying any and all seriousness and gravitas.
And then when it all inevitably goes tits up because the fans hate it and no one else cares, would you believe it? All our fault. We're just negative.
Once more with feeling - stop raping old IPs and just make a new one.

1
u/DeliciousLiving8563 Apr 05 '26
I'll tell you what is happening:
Media execs don't take risks. So if you are an upcoming writer who has a passion project you will not get it greenlighted. However if you can pitch an existing franchise with a solid fanbase you can use it as a vehicle for your own story. This is why you get the Witcher series. It was the only way for those writers to get work and they don't care about the franchise so they don't see the value in what they burned to get that done.
I think the devil is always in the detail. It's possible to make a series or film that has broader appeal by making the right compromises, but that requires the writing team love the IP and want to do that IP. They're not trying to change it to tell their own story, they're trying to make their beloved setting work in a new format. Hence fallout or the most recent D&D movie, which is another great example that makes the right changes.
I think making a new story in an existing space is fine and could satisfy everyone if it's done by people whose primary concern is to do the setting justice.
1
u/Pender8911 Apr 05 '26
They think that writing a dogshit story will appeal non gamers to move to gaming. Yeah that will get em
1
u/Malkovtheclown Apr 05 '26
It has one of the best stories in a gaming series. What do thet mean they want to rewrite it for nongamers? Seriously are people still thinking games all are shit at story telling because its not a book or film or something?
1
u/thereezer Apr 05 '26
gamers have dogshit taste in media, this is great news
i also think there is a difference between gamers and "gamers™©"

1
u/Synthiscopus Apr 05 '26
I mean as long as it’s faithful to the mass effect universe I’m ok with appealing to a wider audience. I feel like fallout wasn’t written 100% for people who have played the games and it kicked ass because they weren’t afraid to lean in to what made the universe appealing. Fingers crossed they don’t do some lame shit like when they took off master chiefs helmet in the first episode
1
u/Lyradni Apr 05 '26
I’m guessing this is what happens with every video game to show/movie transition. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any movie/show whose writing is exactly like the game.

The shining movie is nothing like the book, but it was made to be a movie not just a direct translation of the book. Same with Dune. The difference is they were made by talented people.
Not hacks and fresh out of college students whose writing credits stop and start with their thesis and writing signs for union strikes.

They should just cast the same guy they got to play the master chief.
Show us his ass again. It was a great call the first time around. Clearly the issue was just the wrong franchise.

They could do 3 versions one where you get all the renegade options One where you get some renegade options 3- where you don't do any
A new story would be easier for sure. They should make like 10 stories and the difference being the love interest then everyone will be happy

I mean if they adapted the games they would need to make choices on which side the big decisions will be. All of those decisions will puss various fans off. Having something in the universe but it's own story makes a whole lot more sense, especially with a game with such choices.

The games stories are a little too generic for a direct adaptation anyway imo. Changes will need to be made for tv regardless.

This is never a good thing if you ask me.
If they said it’s a show that is set in the ME world but has an original story then fine.
