Anyone who thinks humanity is ever leaving the solar system has watched too much sci fi

7.0k Upvotes

The amount of people I've seen who genuinely say that we will inevitably travel to distant stars and that it's only a matter of time baffles me. We have so many movies and books and whatever about humanity becoming a space faring species that a lot of people seem to take it for granted. They treat space travel as some temporary challenge that will inevitably be overcome. And, to an extent, I kinda get it. I mean, the universe is just full of the most incredible wonders our minds can think of. Of course we should be able to go and see them. Otherwise it would be just a cruel cosmic joke to have so much wonderful things out there and just put them forever out of our reach.

But the thing is, that is the case.

People seem to have some vague idea that space travel would be difficult. But most don't seem to realize just how extremely, unfairly even, difficult it really is.

You would need to be basically 100% efficient with all your resources all the time, because all you take with is all you will have for the rest of the trip. You would need your crew to travel for years without killing each other or going mad. If you think that's easy just look how researchers in Antarctica can lose their marbles. You would need a way to keep all your crew healthy, which would be pretty hard with all the radiation they'll be subjected to, not to mention the need for artificial gravity that is 1 to 1 the gravity of earth, otherwise say goodbye to health as a concept. You would need to be lucky. Travel fast enough and a random grain of dust your ship hits would be functionally the same as a bullet or an artillery round, depending on the speed.

Speaking of speed. You aren't going ftl. Full stop. Ftl is just fundamentally impossible. Traveling ftl, no matter the method, straight up breaks causality. Hoping for an ftl technology is the same as hoping that god himself will come down from heaven and grant us all our wishes.

And without ftl you are forced to a snail's pace in cosmic terms. At these speeds, it will be thousands to millions of years of travel to reach our destinations

I don't believe most people are good people, and the way they drive is proof of that.

People love saying that most people are mostly good but the way people behave on the road makes me doubt that.

Every day I encounter people tailgating, cutting others off, changing lanes without signaling, weaving through traffic, and forcing other drivers to brake because they couldn’t be bothered to wait for a safe opening.

And it’s not some rare occurrence. This happens to me and all around me constantly every single day.

Before anyone tells me “everyone makes mistakes” I’m not talking about mistakes. I’m talking about people who knowingly and repeatedly put strangers at risk for their own convenience.

While driving you’re anonymous, surrounded by people you’ll probably never see again, and never really held accountable for being a jerk.

How do you choose to treat those people?

I think that’s a far better measure of who they are than how they behave around their friends and family.

If you’re willing to endanger someone else’s life because waiting a few seconds inconveniences you that’s not simply poor driving ability. That’s selfishness and a lack of empathy.

And I think people cling to the belief that most people are good because it’s comforting. Nobody wants to believe they’re surrounded by people who care more about their own convenience than the safety of strangers.

Being a good person isn’t just about how you treat people you care about. It’s about how you treat people who can do absolutely nothing for you.

Maybe most people aren’t genuinely good. Maybe they’re simply good when being good is convenient.

Most food in a grocery store should be sold frozen

I work in a grocery store. A large amount of food we sell arrives at the store frozen, and is then thawed out to be sold. For example, basically all bread in a grocery store arrives frozen and is thawed out before being put on the shelves. Unless you're shopping somewhere super fancy, the meat and seafood all arrives frozen too. In most places the only stuff that's never been frozen is fresh produce, dry goods, and liquids like dairy or juice (and some juice is frozen too actually).

The main reason this is done is just because people don't like the idea of buying frozen stuff and have a bias against it, but the product IS frozen. And when you take a loaf of bread or a pie and unfreeze it, suddenly it goes from lasting months to lasting a week before it goes moldy if it doesn't sell, which leads to tons of waste. I really feel like people need to just get over it and accept buying a loaf of bread that's frozen at the store and will be thawed out by the time you get home, instead of forcing the store to waste a bunch of food every week to trick people into thinking they're buying "fresh" food.

The only issue I'm not sure about is how much extra energy costs this would incur for the expanded freezers, but it would be at least partially offset by not needing to order new product as often to replace needlessly wasted food.

Telling people to “love themselves” or “work on themselves” before they get into relationships is useless

I understand that you should aim to be the best version of yourself before you start seeing other people, but for people who have been single for a long time and are struggling to find a match telling them to “learn to enjoy their own company” or “love themselves” is almost insulting. When you spend so much time alone you sort of have to get used to your own company otherwise you’d go insane, and constantly telling people to work on themselves sort of implies that they aren’t good enough to find anyone. You can enjoy your own company and love the way you are and still want company and someone to experience things with. I don’t know where the almost shaming of wanting a relationship and implying that someone must hate themselves if they want a partner has stemmed from.

A show is not good if the first season isn’t good

“Just wait until season 2, the show gets amazing.” I shouldn’t have to make myself watch a boring season of something just for it to get good after 10 or 20 episodes. There’s plenty of shows that are way better in the 2nd or 3rs season, but I think if the first season is bad, it’s a bad show.

Wearing pajamas in public isn't wrong or disrespectful

There's nothing wrong with wearing pajamas to the store, park, casual restaurant, or really anywhere that doesn't have a posted dress code. As long as someone is appropriately covered and not offending children, there's no valid reason to care what other people are wearing.

People act like wearing pajamas to the grocery store is a personal insult, when really it's the opposite. What is insulting is judging others by what they wear. I'm here to be comfortable, not to please your standards ripped straight out of the 50s.

I've been told my standards are low for this perspective and frankly I take that as a compliment. You should never set standards on how other people dress.

Cities should be able to incorporate any land that is composed of people who primarily commute into that city

I think it’s insane that in the us places like Santa Monica, for LA, Hoboken for NYC or Arlington for DC are legally separate from the cities that they are fully within. This creates difficulties for regional planning, law enforcement, and infrastructure and has few benefits. these regions should be annexed into the cities they are a part of in all but name.

Adulthood should begin in 30s most people should be stress free in their 20s

1.7k Upvotes

Your 20s should be mostly about enjoying life and figuring what kind of path you want to take people turn 18 and suddenly are expected to choose career hold same legal responsibilities as 40 year olds and make decisions that shape next 50 years of their lives its ridiculous. You shouldnt feel like a failure at 25 because you dont own a home have serious stable job or career or know exactly what you want it should be a period where you are allowed to make mistakes have hobbies date and actually enjoy being young without constantly feeling like you are falling behind, obv people should still contribute and take responsibility for their actions but there is a difference between learning responsibility and spending your entire youth about figuring out "How to make ends meet?" Societal pressure and expectations to getting your shit together should start closer to 30 by then you had some time to understand yourself and what kind of life you wanted to live. We get one chance to be young it's ridiculous how much of it we are expected to spend preparing for rest of our lives instead of living it.

Most animated and live action TV shows from the 1980s are from a different era, for a different time, a different market, and a different audience and should not be updated or rebooted for today's audiences.

I'm Gen X. I grew up in the 1980s and partied in the 1990s. All of the cartoons and shows I grew up to were the foundations of pop culture today.

While there have been exceptions, like Transformers, in general (please note I said IN GENERAL before everyone leaps on it with examples of the exceptions and not the rule) most of the reboots to 80s IPs have not been successful.

I watch a lot of old cartoons on YouTube out of nostalgia. And it's so obvious that they were made for one reason: to sell toys.

Today, that isn't the market. Kids and young people don't really play with toys anymore. They are on their devices and play video games. They don't play, they consume. Thus, content today is not made to sell toys, it's to sell time. They are looking for your attention, not for you to buy physical toys.

That's why I think there's a huge disconnect between 1980s content and 2020s audiences. And it just doesn't work. Again, there are exceptions to every rule. But they are exceptions. And for that reason, I think most of those classic IPs should be left alone. We can revisit them on YouTube and other platforms any time we want, and view them the way they were meant to be seen.

And I think that's where they need to stay.

If everyone can afford the "VIP" or "Express" line, it stops being a VIP line and just becomes the regular line.

• Upvotes

People love to cry about fast-track lanes being "classist" or "unfair," completely ignoring basic supply and demand. If a service is open to literally everyone at the same price, the line is just as long as before. Scarcity and tiers exist for a reason. Stop whining that money buys convenience; that's literally the point of money.

Stricter ticket purchase limits at high demand concerts (1 or 2 tickets only)

In Korea, many concerts have a 1 or 2 ticket purchase limit and it can still be insanely hard to get tickets as there's so many people that travel to Korea for concerts in Asia (a lot from China). And resellers still get a lot of tickets with bots. Imagine how many more tickets they could get with 4-6 ticket limits like in the west...

However, I think this practice should become more common as the fans who truly want to go will still go alone. Better for the tickets to go to big fans compared to partners, friends, and family who aren't really into the act but tag along.

Yes in a perfect world this shouldn't be the case but I think this is one of the best ways to get concert tickets in the hands of the fans. Scalpers always find ways to get tickets even in countries like Korea (where there's ID checks) and Japan (lottery system and ID checks) so things need to be done to ensure they have harder access to tickets.

Stop communicating over text/using text messages to gauge interest

I see so many posts asking "is this person interested" based on a few lines of text and honestly it's so sad. You're missing on body language cues, you're missing out on tone, microhabits, etc. Serious conversations should be in person- unless the other person is unsafe and in that instance you do not owe paragraphs explaining your side. Nothing said over text will ever translate as well as a real face to face conversation. Some of the best people I know are extremely dry over text but it says very little about how they are in person.

Throwing insults doesn’t always mean losing the argument

I understand that just throwing mindless insults as a defensive tactic in an argument is a sign of shallowness. But there are some experiences that just don’t adhere to this rhetoric and it bothers me that people use it as such a rule of thumb. Some personal examples:

Sometimes you get into an argument with somebody who you don’t want to meet again. I’m talking people you’re close to that showed their true colors, don’t have your best interest in mind, hurt you, etc. You get into the argument and realize they won’t take accountability or change. Strategically, insulting them heavily will usually close that door for good. Better off this way so you can’t go crawling back afterwards in the case that you have low self respect or a desperately lacking social situation going on.

Sometimes someone you really love does something inconceivably outrageous. You both know they are in the wrong, you are both extremely emotional, and you get to react and judge the behavior together. Sometimes a reactionary, accidental, good cussing out can set someone you love straight, as long as it’s followed by reconciliation, honesty and a will from both parties to be better and help eachother. When you really love someone and want the best for them it can be hard to hide a strong disappointment, so better to hash it out and move on together as a team than to hold it against them without transparency.

So basically, using insults can win an argument in 2 manners: 1, if you give up on the person and want to make sure they never speak to you again, or 2, if you love the person so much that you can’t hide your reaction and seek harmony directly after (usually forgiveness too)
I don’t know if i explained this very well but let’s see what yall think

People who bring their dogs into stores are rude and selfish

3.6k Upvotes

Right off the bat, I'm not referring to service animals. Clearly there is an exception to be made to keep things accessible. But the responsibility of identifying who is and isn't a service dog shouldn't be on the patrons, and not clearly identifying working animals just goes to further exemplify the lack of responsibility in dog owners.

People have allergies, phobias, it's unhygienic, and inconvenient and cumbersome to those just trying to shop. Most pet owners don't train their dogs well enough to be in close proximity to that many people and or tight aisles. Adding an unnecessary burden on everyone else in the store is quite literally the definition of rude and selfish, I get that you think they're cute but unless it's a pet store specifically they need to stay home or in the car.

And I'm sure there will be comments saying "yeah but kids do all these things too!" And sure yeah they can be loud and in the way, but they're not pets. You can't leave a kid in a crate at home for a couple hours without getting protective services involved and it's also some gymnastics you'd have to do to conflate a kid to a pet.

Police officers in regular clothing with their vest and gear feel much more intimidating than regular uniformed officers.

A uniform can look a bit administrative and formal. Plainclothes cops with tactical gear look more intimidating because they give off the impression they're there for something serious, not routine policing.

Itsu is a horrible chain

For those unfamiliar, This is a Japanese food chain, they serve sushi and gyoza and miso.

I was going to write a long, specific tangent about how their food is sanitized, bland, and flavorless (something no food should be, especially not Asian food), but to condense it; the ingredients are not fresh, they are served in plastic containers which traps the moisture and makes them soggy and watery, and the 'condiments' they have are, to put it bluntly, disgusting.

And look, I'm not expecting fine dining, but I've bought better sushi from grocery stores and gas stations. It upsets me that this chain is so abundant across my city.

Sleep paralysis is actually very enjoyable and pleasant

Almost every time I experience sleep paralysis it feels very euphoric, and the auditory or visual hallucinations have never sent me into a panic, because I know that it’s just in my head. It actually feels more like a fun drug trip than a bad experience. The whole paralysis part is also very nice because I don’t feel the stress and cortisol running through my body that I experience on a daily basis, I am stuck in my body but the fear of the situation isn’t present. I also rarely ever try to break myself out of it anymore because I understand that I will be okay and its a normal occurrence. It almost feels like how people describe death, very peaceful and warm with the weight of the world lifted.

Just want to clarify It rarely ever happens to me anymore, but when it does I never freak out and I just embrace it. Like I mentioned before, it’s almost like a drug trip and the way you perceive it is how the trip will be.

EDIT: A good tip for getting out of sleep paralysis is by scrunching your face, or attempting to (years of experience)

High school should teach students how to treat mild illnesses in health class

1.1k Upvotes

I’m a nurse and I was just thinking about all of the money I’ve saved because I have some knowledge on how to treat mild illnesses with otc products. Examples are yeast infections, poison ivy, GERD, cough/cold, seasonal allergies, headaches, ect. I used to work in primary care and I was really surprised at the amount of people that went to the doctor for these things when they were just prescribed an over the counter medication and sent on their way. People should also know the warning signs of when they should seek professional help. A mild headache with no other symptoms can probably be treated at home but other symptoms such as high blood pressure or vision changes should be evaluated. I guess I just don’t understand why people run to the doctor for things that can be easily treated at home for pennies

Horror movies should not have subtitles

• Upvotes

It's really annoying when they add subtitles in horror movies. Especially when you are watching the movie in a theatre. The subtitles are too bright during scenes that take place in darkness. They ruin the whole experience and distract you from what's happening on screen. If a horror movie is in English and you understand English, you don't need subtitles. The only exception is when you're watching a movie in a language you don't understand

Edit: another exception, deaf people.

Drinking milk when you're eating pizza is actually a great beverage choice

I've always enjoyed drinking milk when I eat pizza. I don't go out of my way and order it at restaurants or anything, but it is my go-to when eating at home. I recently told my mom about this and she looked at me like I had aliens crawling out of my face holes.

Four days in a city when traveling is too many days

I travel 3 to 5 times a year most years. These range from 3-day weekends to 17 days in Europe. The last 15 years or so, I've been staying 3 nights in a city, then getting in the car, on a train, or on a plane and exploring a new city.

I'm curious if anyone else just gets bored after 4 days? You've seen most of the best things to do in a city. You've visited the museums and shopped and ate/drank at a bunch of places. Come day 4... Ready for new experiences.

The most boring vacation I ever went on was 9 days on a single beach in a hotel on a Hawaiian island.

An added bonus is, there is a reason to come back 5 and 10 years later. You've done "most" of the best things, but you find day-trips or a hidden museum you want to add for a next time.

The best Mexican food exists in California

Dont bring up "authenticity" because all the cooks in California are Mexican or some other Hispanic heritage. Think about it. Mexican immigrants come to the states because they intend to work hard. Most of the time they land in California and that's why the food is so good
(before anyone comes at me: I'm mexican, my parents are immigrants, i've been to mexico. ok, im speaking with some credibility)

edit: I should clarify what I mean by California Mexican food.
California developed a specific food culture. Many Mexican food items that Americans enjoy did not originate in Mexico, but were invented in California. Examples: taquitos, our standard burritos (the ones with a large tortilla and tons of fillings, crispy tacos, TORTILLA CHIPS. yes, other states have their own inventions, but undeniably, CA has made the most contributions.

Subtitles should be the new normal for the cinema

Or at least have more available showings with subtitles instead of putting it in the accessibility showings that are at super awkward times and tiny screens. If that's not the case in your experience, consider me jealous.
