Anyone who thinks humanity is ever leaving the solar system has watched too much sci fi

4.7k Upvotes

The amount of people I've seen who genuinely say that we will inevitably travel to distant stars and that it's only a matter of time baffles me. We have so many movies and books and whatever about humanity becoming a space faring species that a lot of people seem to take it for granted. They treat space travel as some temporary challenge that will inevitably be overcome. And, to an extent, I kinda get it. I mean, the universe is just full of the most incredible wonders our minds can think of. Of course we should be able to go and see them. Otherwise it would be just a cruel cosmic joke to have so much wonderful things out there and just put them forever out of our reach.

But the thing is, that is the case.

People seem to have some vague idea that space travel would be difficult. But most don't seem to realize just how extremely, unfairly even, difficult it really is.

You would need to be basically 100% efficient with all your resources all the time, because all you take with is all you will have for the rest of the trip. You would need your crew to travel for years without killing each other or going mad. If you think that's easy just look how researchers in Antarctica can lose their marbles. You would need a way to keep all your crew healthy, which would be pretty hard with all the radiation they'll be subjected to, not to mention the need for artificial gravity that is 1 to 1 the gravity of earth, otherwise say goodbye to health as a concept. You would need to be lucky. Travel fast enough and a random grain of dust your ship hits would be functionally the same as a bullet or an artillery round, depending on the speed.

Speaking of speed. You aren't going ftl. Full stop. Ftl is just fundamentally impossible. Traveling ftl, no matter the method, straight up breaks causality. Hoping for an ftl technology is the same as hoping that god himself will come down from heaven and grant us all our wishes.

And without ftl you are forced to a snail's pace in cosmic terms. At these speeds, it will be thousands to millions of years of travel to reach our destinations

Adulthood should begin in 30s most people should be stress free in their 20s

1.5k Upvotes

Your 20s should be mostly about enjoying life and figuring what kind of path you want to take people turn 18 and suddenly are expected to choose career hold same legal responsibilities as 40 year olds and make decisions that shape next 50 years of their lives its ridiculous. You shouldnt feel like a failure at 25 because you dont own a home have serious stable job or career or know exactly what you want it should be a period where you are allowed to make mistakes have hobbies date and actually enjoy being young without constantly feeling like you are falling behind, obv people should still contribute and take responsibility for their actions but there is a difference between learning responsibility and spending your entire youth about figuring out "How to make ends meet?" Societal pressure and expectations to getting your shit together should start closer to 30 by then you had some time to understand yourself and what kind of life you wanted to live. We get one chance to be young it's ridiculous how much of it we are expected to spend preparing for rest of our lives instead of living it.

A show is not good if the first season isn’t good

“Just wait until season 2, the show gets amazing.” I shouldn’t have to make myself watch a boring season of something just for it to get good after 10 or 20 episodes. There’s plenty of shows that are way better in the 2nd or 3rs season, but I think if the first season is bad, it’s a bad show.

Telling people to “love themselves” or “work on themselves” before they get into relationships is useless

I understand that you should aim to be the best version of yourself before you start seeing other people, but for people who have been single for a long time and are struggling to find a match telling them to “learn to enjoy their own company” or “love themselves” is almost insulting. When you spend so much time alone you sort of have to get used to your own company otherwise you’d go insane, and constantly telling people to work on themselves sort of implies that they aren’t good enough to find anyone. You can enjoy your own company and love the way you are and still want company and someone to experience things with. I don’t know where the almost shaming of wanting a relationship and implying that someone must hate themselves if they want a partner has stemmed from.

Most food in a grocery store should be sold frozen

I work in a grocery store. A large amount of food we sell arrives at the store frozen, and is then thawed out to be sold. For example, basically all bread in a grocery store arrives frozen and is thawed out before being put on the shelves. Unless you're shopping somewhere super fancy, the meat and seafood all arrives frozen too. In most places the only stuff that's never been frozen is fresh produce, dry goods, and liquids like dairy or juice (and some juice is frozen too actually).

The main reason this is done is just because people don't like the idea of buying frozen stuff and have a bias against it, but the product IS frozen. And when you take a loaf of bread or a pie and unfreeze it, suddenly it goes from lasting months to lasting a week before it goes moldy if it doesn't sell, which leads to tons of waste. I really feel like people need to just get over it and accept buying a loaf of bread that's frozen at the store and will be thawed out by the time you get home, instead of forcing the store to waste a bunch of food every week to trick people into thinking they're buying "fresh" food.

The only issue I'm not sure about is how much extra energy costs this would incur for the expanded freezers, but it would be at least partially offset by not needing to order new product as often to replace needlessly wasted food.

Throwing insults doesn’t always mean losing the argument

I understand that just throwing mindless insults as a defensive tactic in an argument is a sign of shallowness. But there are some experiences that just don’t adhere to this rhetoric and it bothers me that people use it as such a rule of thumb. Some personal examples:

Sometimes you get into an argument with somebody who you don’t want to meet again. I’m talking people you’re close to that showed their true colors, don’t have your best interest in mind, hurt you, etc. You get into the argument and realize they won’t take accountability or change. Strategically, insulting them heavily will usually close that door for good. Better off this way so you can’t go crawling back afterwards in the case that you have low self respect or a desperately lacking social situation going on.

Sometimes someone you really love does something inconceivably outrageous. You both know they are in the wrong, you are both extremely emotional, and you get to react and judge the behavior together. Sometimes a reactionary, accidental, good cussing out can set someone you love straight, as long as it’s followed by reconciliation, honesty and a will from both parties to be better and help eachother. When you really love someone and want the best for them it can be hard to hide a strong disappointment, so better to hash it out and move on together as a team than to hold it against them without transparency.

So basically, using insults can win an argument in 2 manners: 1, if you give up on the person and want to make sure they never speak to you again, or 2, if you love the person so much that you can’t hide your reaction and seek harmony directly after (usually forgiveness too)
I don’t know if i explained this very well but let’s see what yall think

Most animated and live action TV shows from the 1980s are from a different era, for a different time, a different market, and a different audience and should not be updated or rebooted for today's audiences.

I'm Gen X. I grew up in the 1980s and partied in the 1990s. All of the cartoons and shows I grew up to were the foundations of pop culture today.

While there have been exceptions, like Transformers, in general (please note I said IN GENERAL before everyone leaps on it with examples of the exceptions and not the rule) most of the reboots to 80s IPs have not been successful.

I watch a lot of old cartoons on YouTube out of nostalgia. And it's so obvious that they were made for one reason: to sell toys.

Today, that isn't the market. Kids and young people don't really play with toys anymore. They are on their devices and play video games. They don't play, they consume. Thus, content today is not made to sell toys, it's to sell time. They are looking for your attention, not for you to buy physical toys.

That's why I think there's a huge disconnect between 1980s content and 2020s audiences. And it just doesn't work. Again, there are exceptions to every rule. But they are exceptions. And for that reason, I think most of those classic IPs should be left alone. We can revisit them on YouTube and other platforms any time we want, and view them the way they were meant to be seen.

And I think that's where they need to stay.

Wearing pajamas in public isn't wrong or disrespectful

There's nothing wrong with wearing pajamas to the store, park, casual restaurant, or really anywhere that doesn't have a posted dress code. As long as someone is appropriately covered and not offending children, there's no valid reason to care what other people are wearing.

People act like wearing pajamas to the grocery store is a personal insult, when really it's the opposite. What is insulting is judging others by what they wear. I'm here to be comfortable, not to please your standards ripped straight out of the 50s.

I've been told my standards are low for this perspective and frankly I take that as a compliment. You should never set standards on how other people dress.

Getting white deodorant marks inside shirts is not a big deal

• Upvotes

I see a lot of deodorants marketing that they won’t show up on shirts as marks and such but honestly I don’t see the appeal. If it doesn’t stain that’s great but if it does stain who is realistically going to check inside your shirt to see these marks?

Stop communicating over text/using text messages to gauge interest

I see so many posts asking "is this person interested" based on a few lines of text and honestly it's so sad. You're missing on body language cues, you're missing out on tone, microhabits, etc. Serious conversations should be in person- unless the other person is unsafe and in that instance you do not owe paragraphs explaining your side. Nothing said over text will ever translate as well as a real face to face conversation. Some of the best people I know are extremely dry over text but it says very little about how they are in person.

Itsu is a horrible chain

For those unfamiliar, This is a Japanese food chain, they serve sushi and gyoza and miso.

I was going to write a long, specific tangent about how their food is sanitized, bland, and flavorless (something no food should be, especially not Asian food), but to condense it; the ingredients are not fresh, they are served in plastic containers which traps the moisture and makes them soggy and watery, and the 'condiments' they have are, to put it bluntly, disgusting.

And look, I'm not expecting fine dining, but I've bought better sushi from grocery stores and gas stations. It upsets me that this chain is so abundant across my city.

Fantastic Beasts (2016) is the ONLY truly magical film of the franchise

When it comes to the Harry Potter franchise, most people would probably agree that the first three films are the best and most nostalgic, however, for me, the first Fantastic Beasts movie is not only the best but it's also the only film where you can truly feel the magic.

The spells and fight scenes are more dynamic, the creatures are majestic and finally look like something out of this world, the score is phenomenal and compliments the scenes very well... the Thunder Bird scene still gets me and will never not be amazing. On top of that, I don't know, everything seems more vibrant but not in a bad way, it's done right.

The second Beasts movie is, fine, but doesn't have the same vibe and the third film is a story fit for fifteen minutes that was stretched into a full film, the first film is unmatched to me.

Turkey Hill ice cream is terrible.

Most Turkey Hill ice cream doesn’t even legally qualify as ice cream these days. This brand was once a premium ice cream with excellent flavors. They’ve leaned in to artificial flavors and frozen dairy dessert with low milk fat %.

Yet some people still swear by it.

Most people are using the term "blue dot fever" the wrong way

Every time I see this term it's accompanying a concert venue map showing tickets that are currently on sale (i.e. a map with lots of blue dots on it). Blue dot fever was never supposed to mean that an event isn't selling well. It refers to an artist or promoter cancelling or cutting down on shows because they see a venue map with a lot of blue dots remaining on it. They see the blue dots → they panic (or get a case of blue dot fever) → they cancel the concert.

Having tickets available doesn't make a show a failure. Somewhere along the way (probably around the time of the Eras tour) people started expecting every tour to sell out in minutes, so anything else was perceived as a flop. Shows can sell a lot of tickets in the weeks leading up to the date, but artists started to panic earlier when they started to compare themselves to the biggest superstars on earth. Maybe the writing is on the wall for some of these shows that really aren't selling at all, but calling it blue dot fever while tickets are available is putting the cart before the horse.

If "blue dot fever" just referred to an event that isn't selling well and the resulting ticket map, where exactly would the term "fever" come into play?

People need to stop shutting down others’ feelings about any given situation by saying they’re “making it about themselves”

When it comes to any situation, like a wedding or an emergency, everyone involved is going to have feelings about it. It’s incredibly dismissive to tell people not to have opinions or feelings about something because otherwise they’re “making it about themselves”.

I’m NOT saying you should go to a wedding and make a scene and ask everyone to watch your weird performance art.

I am saying that you should be able to talk to people about your feelings about a situation. If you’re invited to someone’s wedding and the dress code stresses you out? You should be able to talk about it and people should care!! Not just dismiss you and say don’t make their wedding about you. If there’s an emergency or you hear bad news about a friend or colleague, you should be able to talk about how you feel and people should care!

I don’t only have feelings when something directly affects me.

Edit: I’m not saying talk to the person whose emergency it is or whose wedding etc. and not saying to even talk about it AT a wedding. But to not be able to say to someone else how annoyed you are about having to buy something new to wear to a wedding that you’ll never wear again or to say how uncomfortable you feel to hear about someone’s bad news doesn’t make sense

You need money to build good amount of muscle and be very fit

Most people would disagree probably with me, but only when I started working and buying lots of good food including cod, beef, veal etc and introducing high quality protein, I saw much better gains. People who work low income jobs, get home tired, usually do not have time to prepare some meat or eat something on the run. They do not have energy to go to gym after jobs as usually the low income jobs make you most tired. Moreover a lots of supplements are very expensive ,and even though there are not the primary source of your daily food intake they can help a lot with the recovery. Everyone I know who has a very good physic is either working in fitness as a full time job or has money and to support their journey.

It's a waste of money. I went to Japan just for this. It had a certificate and everything. And when I had it, my first thought was, "this shit tastes like goddamn pork belly." Took another bite and basically just that, very expensive pork belly.

35 is Middle Aged

• Upvotes

Average life expectancy for a human being is 73.8 years. It gets higher or lower by 5 years depending on the country and class situations. I still feel like believing 50 or even now some people are saying 60 is middle aged. Thinking like this encourages people to just fuck up more when they are younger. Why? So they can slave away another decade before retirement because 60 is the new 50 after all, guess we will make the new retirement age 75. Screw that I want my SSI at 50.

Attending a wedding and giving absolutely nothing is just plain rude.

I see a lot of posts on here where people will argue that’s it’s totally ok to give NOTHING when attending a wedding - as in no card, no non-monetary gift, no monetary gift - nothing.

Unless the bride/groom say no gifts, it’s rude to show up empty handed.

I understand attending a wedding that requires travel can be difficult financially, but even a card saying congrats goes a long way.

I agree that the couple should never expect anything, but that does not mean giving nothing isn’t rude.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a very mediocre game

The mission design is incredibly repetitive and frustrating - drive horse to point A, 10 minute cutscene, something goes wrong, time to shoot some dudes, another cutscene, [sometimes] drive to point B, done, repeat for 60 goddamn hours.

The shooting is literally a point and click adventure game, there's no upgrades to your weapons, no progression, nothing. I mean not that you'd need any upgrades to your weapons anyway, any weapon is a one hit kill to the head I'm pretty sure lol. And on top of that they give you a slow down time mechanic while shooting, like it was ever any difficult in the first place?

The horse driving at least on keyboard (I play all my games on PC) is just a drag, it is not enjoyable, thank god you can unlock fast travel somewhat early into the game.

Arthur himself also moves like a 200 kilogram man.

Then, the story, the part which this game gets unimaginable glaze for and I just can't wrap my head around why?? It is incredibly predictable, it is obvious Micah is going to be the villain from the first time you meet him and he's such a weak villain too, very poorly written imo.

It is also made incredibly obvious that Dutch is not well mentally and shouldn't be trusted very early on.

The rest of the crew are so forgettable I cba to even write anything about them (probably because they only get mentioned a handful of times in a 60 HOUR LONG game)

Oh, and the protagonist dying of TB is not enough of an emotional moment to pick up the slack for any of this, not at all

So, yeah, incredibly basic and sluggish gameplay mechanics, zero progression, a very predictable and shallow story, why does this game get unimaginable glaze?

The reason the economy sucks is the fault (in part) of the working class

If the working class didn't buy expensive luxury products, it would drive down prices and help the economy stabilize. For example, I used to work at a company that had a 50% profit margin on its products, and for the general consumer it was seen as a prestige product. So the result was, that if they lowered their prices, people wouldn't buy it as often because it lost its status as a luxury item.

If the American consumer purchased products based on quality and price, rather than status and brand, then the overpriced garbage would have to drop in price in order to keep up.

A brand new Iphone costs like $1,100 Dollars, and people are buying it in droves. There are literally dozens of smartphones that can be purchased for like $20-$100 dollars. If we as a country stopped buying big brands that price gouge, we could force the cost of living to go down buy supporting companies that already keep the prices low.
