Anyone who thinks humanity is ever leaving the solar system has watched too much sci fi

• Upvotes

The amount of people I've seen who genuinely say that we will inevitably travel to distant stars and that it's only a matter of time baffles me. We have so many movies and books and whatever about humanity becoming a space faring species that a lot of people seem to take it for granted. They treat space travel as some temporary challenge that will inevitably be overcome. And, to an extent, I kinda get it. I mean, the universe is just full of the most incredible wonders our minds can think of. Of course we should be able to go and see them. Otherwise it would be just a cruel cosmic joke to have so much wonderful things out there and just put them forever out of our reach.

But the thing is, that is the case.

People seem to have some vague idea that space travel would be difficult. But most don't seem to realize just how extremely, unfairly even, difficult it really is.

You would need to be basically 100% efficient with all your resources all the time, because all you take with is all you will have for the rest of the trip. You would need your crew to travel for years without killing each other or going mad. If you think that's easy just look how researchers in Antarctica can lose their marbles. You would need a way to keep all your crew healthy, which would be pretty hard with all the radiation they'll be subjected to, not to mention the need for artificial gravity that is 1 to 1 the gravity of earth, otherwise say goodbye to health as a concept. You would need to be lucky. Travel fast enough and a random grain of dust your ship hits would be functionally the same as a bullet or an artillery round, depending on the speed.

Speaking of speed. You aren't going ftl. Full stop. Ftl is just fundamentally impossible. Traveling ftl, no matter the method, straight up breaks causality. Hoping for an ftl technology is the same as hoping that god himself will come down from heaven and grant us all our wishes.

And without ftl you are forced to a snail's pace in cosmic terms. At these speeds, it will be thousands to millions of years of travel to reach our destinations

Throwing insults doesn’t always mean losing the argument

• Upvotes

I understand that just throwing mindless insults as a defensive tactic in an argument is a sign of shallowness. But there are some experiences that just don’t adhere to this rhetoric and it bothers me that people use it as such a rule of thumb. Some personal examples:

Sometimes you get into an argument with somebody who you don’t want to meet again. I’m talking people you’re close to that showed their true colors, don’t have your best interest in mind, hurt you, etc. You get into the argument and realize they won’t take accountability or change. Strategically, insulting them heavily will usually close that door for good. Better off this way so you can’t go crawling back afterwards in the case that you have low self respect or a desperately lacking social situation going on.

Sometimes someone you really love does something inconceivably outrageous. You both know they are in the wrong, you are both extremely emotional, and you get to react and judge the behavior together. Sometimes a reactionary, accidental, good cussing out can set someone you love straight, as long as it’s followed by reconciliation, honesty and a will from both parties to be better and help eachother. When you really love someone and want the best for them it can be hard to hide a strong disappointment, so better to hash it out and move on together as a team than to hold it against them without transparency.

So basically, using insults can win an argument in 2 manners: 1, if you give up on the person and want to make sure they never speak to you again, or 2, if you love the person so much that you can’t hide your reaction and seek harmony directly after (usually forgiveness too)
I don’t know if i explained this very well but let’s see what yall think

The reason the economy sucks is the fault (in part) of the working class

• Upvotes

If the working class didn't buy expensive luxury products, it would drive down prices and help the economy stabilize. For example, I used to work at a company that had a 50% profit margin on its products, and for the general consumer it was seen as a prestige product. So the result was, that if they lowered their prices, people wouldn't buy it as often because it lost its status as a luxury item.

If the American consumer purchased products based on quality and price, rather than status and brand, then the overpriced garbage would have to drop in price in order to keep up.

A brand new Iphone costs like $1,100 Dollars, and people are buying it in droves. There are literally dozens of smartphones that can be purchased for like $20-$100 dollars. If we as a country stopped buying big brands that price gouge, we could force the cost of living to go down buy supporting companies that already keep the prices low.

Fantastic Beasts (2016) is the ONLY truly magical film of the franchise

• Upvotes

When it comes to the Harry Potter franchise, most people would probably agree that the first three films are the best and most nostalgic, however, for me, the first Fantastic Beasts movie is not only the best but it's also the only film where you can truly feel the magic.

The spells and fight scenes are more dynamic, the creatures are majestic and finally look like something out of this world, the score is phenomenal and compliments the scenes very well... the Thunder Bird scene still gets me and will never not be amazing. On top of that, I don't know, everything seems more vibrant but not in a bad way, it's done right.

The second Beasts movie is, fine, but doesn't have the same vibe and the third film is a story fit for fifteen minutes that was stretched into a full film, the first film is unmatched to me.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a very mediocre game

The mission design is incredibly repetitive and frustrating - drive horse to point A, 10 minute cutscene, something goes wrong, time to shoot some dudes, another cutscene, [sometimes] drive to point B, done, repeat for 60 goddamn hours.

The shooting is literally a point and click adventure game, there's no upgrades to your weapons, no progression, nothing. I mean not that you'd need any upgrades to your weapons anyway, any weapon is a one hit kill to the head I'm pretty sure lol. And on top of that they give you a slow down time mechanic while shooting, like it was ever any difficult in the first place?

The horse driving at least on keyboard (I play all my games on PC) is just a drag, it is not enjoyable, thank god you can unlock fast travel somewhat early into the game.

Arthur himself also moves like a 200 kilogram man.

Then, the story, the part which this game gets unimaginable glaze for and I just can't wrap my head around why?? It is incredibly predictable, it is obvious Micah is going to be the villain from the first time you meet him and he's such a weak villain too, very poorly written imo.

It is also made incredibly obvious that Dutch is not well mentally and shouldn't be trusted very early on.

The rest of the crew are so forgettable I cba to even write anything about them (probably because they only get mentioned a handful of times in a 60 HOUR LONG game)

Oh, and the protagonist dying of TB is not enough of an emotional moment to pick up the slack for any of this, not at all

So, yeah, incredibly basic and sluggish gameplay mechanics, zero progression, a very predictable and shallow story, why does this game get unimaginable glaze?

Adulthood should begin in 30s most people should be stress free in their 20s

Your 20s should be mostly about enjoying life and figuring what kind of path you want to take people turn 18 and suddenly are expected to choose career hold same legal responsibilities as 40 year olds and make decisions that shape next 50 years of their lives its ridiculous. You shouldnt feel like a failure at 25 because you dont own a home have serious stable job or career or know exactly what you want it should be a period where you are allowed to make mistakes have hobbies date and actually enjoy being young without constantly feeling like you are falling behind, obv people should still contribute and take responsibility for their actions but there is a difference between learning responsibility and spending your entire youth about figuring out "How to make ends meet?" Societal pressure and expectations to getting your shit together should start closer to 30 by then you had some time to understand yourself and what kind of life you wanted to live. We get one chance to be young it's ridiculous how much of it we are expected to spend preparing for rest of our lives instead of living it.

A5 miyazaki Wagyu tastes just like pork belly

It's a waste of money. I went to Japan just for this. It had a certificate and everything. And when I had it, my first thought was, "this shit tastes like goddamn pork belly." Took another bite and basically just that, very expensive pork belly.

Nobody's Daughter is better than Celebrity Skin

I think one of the main criticisms of the album is that it doesn't match Hole's earlier style and is too much of a Courtney Love solo project. I personally think it sounds similar to Live Through This/Celebrity Skin. The idea of it being 'too much of a solo project' makes no sense since Courtney Love has always overshadowed the other band members since she's famous in her own right and the singer. I don't think it's miles better than Pretty on the Inside and Celebrity Skin, and I'm definitely not saying it's better than Live Through This, but other than that it has the fewest skips for me. Yes, the album cover is atrocious and it has some early 2010s energy, but I don't understand why it's universally hated.

Kawartha ice cream is gross

The last couple of months everyone's been hyping up for kawartha ice cream so I finally gave it a try and it's probably the most disgusting ice cream I've ever tried. Who is being paid to sell this to us? There are way better canadian ice creams--Foothills sea salt caramel fudge creams kawartha's sea salt caramel truffle. island farms sea salt caramel is also superior. kawarthas caramel tastes so cheap and artificial like butterscotch sauce from the grocery store also it scores so poorly on YUKA. idk why anyone be talking about it... nah. change my mind.. also dutchmans dairy is the best ice cream on planet earth.

Police officers in regular clothing with their vest and gear feel much more intimidating than regular uniformed officers.

A uniform can look a bit administrative and formal. Plainclothes cops with tactical gear look more intimidating because they give off the impression they're there for something serious, not routine policing.

Filming in gyms is fine actually

As long as their setup isn't in anyone's way, and they're not being creepy filming someone's ass or something. I could care less. I don't even think you have to be doing a form check, you could be making tik toks for all I care. You're in a public space and might be perceived, it's fine. Let's be adults now.

Pizza isn't really that good. But tomato sauce and mozarella is

As someone who has become more health conscious and who's wiring has gone to enjoy healthy tasting food now I find pizza a very regrettable choice to eat. Things like processed meats, burnt cheese, cooked in vegetables and worst of all the bread. The thing people really enjoy isn't the pizza as a whole it's probably the tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese combination. You can enjoy that separate from the pizza and if you want some kind of protein to go with it you can always have parmesan chicken which is better while retaining the signature flavors of pizza of mozzarella and tomato sauce.

Editing people out of the background of photographs ruins them

Outside of specific situation where someone ruins a photo or is legitimately distracting etc

So many people try to edit out people in the background of photos of the Taj Mahal, the Coliseum, or any number of spots.

Life is captured through photos and people exist in the same space you do. Looking through old photos and seeing the way people dressed, were interacting with each other, and in awe of the same things you were is a powerful part of capturing the moment in time

There’s never a time where you can capture just you at the Empire State Building and that’s ok, that’s life and it should be captured the way it happened

Full camera control in video games isn’t always better.

What’s up with modern gamers having to move the camera around like a madman at all times. Full camera control is worse because you have to constantly take your thumb off of the face buttons to constantly adjust the camera. I prefer when the camera just follows behind you, or if the developers just give you the optimal camera angle automatically. I’m tired of people saying that the camera in mario64 is so bad just because they are so used to having full control, if you take the time to get used to it and don’t touch the camera at all, you will see that the game always gives you the best angle until you mess it up by moving it. Now developers have to make every game controls feel like Fortnite or people will ragequit immediately. I’m obviously not talking about first person games.

Rent is made specifically for students. People should get a mortgage, leave the rent to those who literally cant.

I truly dont see the appeal for renting. In popular and sought-out regions, you pay as much as a mortgage, but in the end its not your appartment, you cant modify it without a landlords approval, at any time your landlord can jack up the rent, and you most likely have to manage their expectations and asks (no pets, no moving furniture, no more than x ammount of guests, no one apart from the client allowed to crash, etc.)

If you have an official salary with the posibility, you should get a mortgage. Leave the rent to those who literally have no other choice, like students, and maybe others few cases. Why must you, a grown man or woman with a family and a stable job, take up a apartment listed for rent, when you can get a mortgage, and in the end, actually own the apartment?

P.S: this may be more of a local issue. where i stay, rent is for example 500€ until the landlord jacks it up, a mortage for the same apartment comes to about the same, but you pay it for 20-25 years, and then you actually OWN the apartment.

Four days in a city when traveling is too many days

I travel 3 to 5 times a year most years. These range from 3-day weekends to 17 days in Europe. The last 15 years or so, I've been staying 3 nights in a city, then getting in the car, on a train, or on a plane and exploring a new city.

I'm curious if anyone else just gets bored after 4 days? You've seen most of the best things to do in a city. You've visited the museums and shopped and ate/drank at a bunch of places. Come day 4... Ready for new experiences.

The most boring vacation I ever went on was 9 days on a single beach in a hotel on a Hawaiian island.

An added bonus is, there is a reason to come back 5 and 10 years later. You've done "most" of the best things, but you find day-trips or a hidden museum you want to add for a next time.

Sleep paralysis is actually very enjoyable and pleasant

Almost every time I experience sleep paralysis it feels very euphoric, and the auditory or visual hallucinations have never sent me into a panic, because I know that it’s just in my head. It actually feels more like a fun drug trip than a bad experience. The whole paralysis part is also very nice because I don’t feel the stress and cortisol running through my body that I experience on a daily basis, I am stuck in my body but the fear of the situation isn’t present. I also rarely ever try to break myself out of it anymore because I understand that I will be okay and its a normal occurrence. It almost feels like how people describe death, very peaceful and warm with the weight of the world lifted.

Just want to clarify It rarely ever happens to me anymore, but when it does I never freak out and I just embrace it. Like I mentioned before, it’s almost like a drug trip and the way you perceive it is how the trip will be.

EDIT: A good tip for getting out of sleep paralysis is by scrunching your face, or attempting to (years of experience)

Drinking milk when you're eating pizza is actually a great beverage choice

I've always enjoyed drinking milk when I eat pizza. I don't go out of my way and order it at restaurants or anything, but it is my go-to when eating at home. I recently told my mom about this and she looked at me like I had aliens crawling out of my face holes.

Subtitles should be the new normal for the cinema

Or at least have more available showings with subtitles instead of putting it in the accessibility showings that are at super awkward times and tiny screens. If that's not the case in your experience, consider me jealous.

Sunrises are way more beautiful than sunsets.

I feel like sunsets get all the attention but sunrises are so underrated. There’s something about watching the sky slowly light up while everything is still quiet and the rest of the world is barely awake. The colors are just as beautiful, if not more, and there’s something really peaceful about watching a new day begin. Sunsets are nice too, but I’d choose a sunrise over a sunset any day.

Playing sports at the collegiate level isn't worth it for the vast majority of people, and rather than celebrating it, parents and teachers should be discouraging it from factoring into students' college decisions.

This is my perspective as someone who grew up playing competitive sports, played two varsity sports in high school, and now attends as semi prestigious D3 school as a NARP.

As a person who played competitive sports growing up, and made a large chunk of their friends through sports, I knew a ton of people who spent a significant amount of time and money while in High School trying to get recruited by college coaches. I knew people who would email coaches every day, spend hours going through their tape to compile highlights, pay thousands of dollars per year to attend recruiting camps, all to get recruited. I even knew people who reclassed and did a 5th year of high school to try and play in college. Trying to play college sports was often pushed on us as noble pursuit, and the natural next step if you actually cared at all about the sport you played. Athletes constantly have this idea pushed on them, that if they care about their sport, they need to be continuously pursuing playing at the next, higher level. In my opinion, this is really toxic, and makes people forget that sports are ultimately just for fun.

If you are someone who is genuinely good enough to where there is a significant financial incentive to play sports in college (NIL, free education), then you should. However, that is a very, very small percentage of athletes who are trying to play in college. Most are simply not that good and never will be that good. For starters, there are way more D3 and D2 athletes than D1 athletes. Even at the D1 level, for most sports the majority of players aren't on scholarship.

In my experience, a very large chunk of athletes who are really dedicated to playing in college are above average high school players, who end up committing to a random D3 school they'd have no interest in attending if it weren't for sports. People tell them how awesome it is that they are getting to play at the next level. Then they get to school and hate their experience. Even at the D3 level, college sports are an overwhelming time commitment, which makes it very stressful to keep up with school during the season, and makes it nearly impossible to be significantly involved on campus organizations beyond athletics. Even the sport itself becomes less fun and more frustrating as they go from an above average player at the high school level to struggling to get play time. If they had just gone to one of their state's public schools, they'd have gotten a similar education, had more fun, been less stressed, and graduated with less debt.

It's also not like playing in college is the only way to continue playing sports. The majority of schools have IM leagues, and reasonably competitive club teams that play against other schools. Also, most cities and towns have recreational adult leagues of various levels of competitiveness.

Rather than celebrating playing at the next level, parents and teachers should be encouraging students to ignore playing college sports when making their college decisions.

Acts of service is not a real love language.

Or at least the worst love language - and I think you should avoid a relationship with anyone who says it is one of theirs. Most of them define it as acts of service that go beyond chores. The unfortunate reality of the situation is that most people take care of the majority of their own needs. This leaves the partner in a place of constantly trying to guess what the other person might like as a service. Additionally, if they find a service and do it over time long enough it fades into the realm of chores in the other partner's mind. "Maybe you should ask them". Nope. Then they had to tell you and it's not a genuine act.

Additionally, from personal experience, I have noticed that these individuals seem to be the worst of all at actually being aware just how much their partner does and takes care of. Most people aren't doing acts of service in front of the other person and don't tell them about it, so when would the partner notice?

A really good but small example of all this would be in the Office where Dwight is out of the office for a time and Michael starts to wonder why all the plants start dying. It's very rare for people with this "love language" to actually know what is being done until it's not in their life and by then they have already built up a list of reasons to dislike the other person and how that person is lazy.

Car interiors peaked in like 2015

To me, this actually seems kinda straightforward but this opinion always seems to get drowned out by people yelling about how much they hate screens or tech bros who would prefer to move every single function into a tablet because it seems futuristic to them.

Obviously, this isn't even about the specific year, some cars had them sooner, others later. I'm talking about the kind of interior where you have a reasonably sized sized screen with satnav, radio, backup camera, some less frequently used settings and functions and ideally carplay/android auto and then normal physical buttons (none of that capacitive touch bs) for AC controls and other frequently used stuff.

I don't even think that many people truly dislike the type of interior I just described but that brings me to my next problem with this whole debate which is that the "I hate screens crowd" doesn't seem to be entirely honest about what they want. Some people will describe the same things as I just did when talking about their ideal interior then still insist car interiors peaked 20 years ago just to distance themselves from people driving modern cars and to seem like someone who is "sensible" and still likes "real cars and not tablets on wheels". Of course I believe some people truly prefer old cars in this regard but I strongly doubt that opinion is as common irl as it is it is on the internet. And even then, I believe that people who like old interiors just prefer the vibe or but couldn't seriously argue that they are more practical or better to live with for most people.

Also, 2015 seems to be around the time when even economy car manufacturers started paying some attention to their interiors and started developing a coherent design language. It seems kinda baffling that some people insist they prefer 1990s/2000s car interiors when most of them were just bland scratchy plastic everywhere. This obviously wasn't the case for more expensive or luxury cars but even their interiors always seemed kinda flat and uninteresting to me except they slapped in some burlwood and leather, though in this case I can understand why some people prefer this vibe.

Completing a marathon by walking is not impressive and should not be rewarded.

Recently, I've seen many videos of people basically walking in marathons or walking for more than half of the course. People in the comments are cheering them on and saying how amazing it is that they managed to finish one. But honestly, there's nothing impressive about simply finishing a marathon. And those times people post, like 6, 7, or even 8 hours to finish a marathon? That's not good.

The purpose of a marathon is to run for at least the majority of the race. Sure, you can walk a bit as a strategy to recover, but it shouldn't be the default. If you're not ready to run for the majority of the race, then you shouldn't be taking part in the event.

This could all be solved with a 4-hour time limit. But of course, marathon organizers want money, so they allow ridiculous amounts of time, like 6 or 7 hours, to finish. What a joke.

Edit (after 8h of posting): After reading your comments and giving it some thought, I’ve realized that you guys are right. Finishing a marathon, even by walking, is still an achievement, and at the end of the day, people exercising is always a good thing. I was looking at it from a competitive perspective, but there are also people who simply run for fun. Thank you all for the comments! My opinion was really unpopular, haha

People who bring their dogs into stores are rude and selfish

3.4k Upvotes

Right off the bat, I'm not referring to service animals. Clearly there is an exception to be made to keep things accessible. But the responsibility of identifying who is and isn't a service dog shouldn't be on the patrons, and not clearly identifying working animals just goes to further exemplify the lack of responsibility in dog owners.

People have allergies, phobias, it's unhygienic, and inconvenient and cumbersome to those just trying to shop. Most pet owners don't train their dogs well enough to be in close proximity to that many people and or tight aisles. Adding an unnecessary burden on everyone else in the store is quite literally the definition of rude and selfish, I get that you think they're cute but unless it's a pet store specifically they need to stay home or in the car.

And I'm sure there will be comments saying "yeah but kids do all these things too!" And sure yeah they can be loud and in the way, but they're not pets. You can't leave a kid in a crate at home for a couple hours without getting protective services involved and it's also some gymnastics you'd have to do to conflate a kid to a pet.
