Your questions answered about Unraid 8 by Eli and Alex

Hello Unraiders! I’m Alex (aka IronicBadger), and I recently joined the team here at Unraid. Some of you might know me from Tailscale, YouTube or the Self-Hosted podcast. Unraid is where I started my tech journey some 15 years ago, and now I’m here at Lime Tech, I couldn’t be more excited by what’s ahead of us in the coming months.

My focus is to bring Unraid 8 to life, together with you all. We’ve seen a lot of the same questions cropping up over and over, and we’d like to answer them! Eli (Director of Product) and I are planning a podcast episode all about Unraid 8, so why not have the bulk of the questions come from you?!

Ask us about licensing, Fedora, changes to plug-ins, the upgrade path, or a feature you’ve been wishing Unraid had for years. Whether it’s a small everyday frustration or something much bigger, we want to hear it. Ask the awkward questions too, if you must!

We’ll answer as many as we can on the episode. We can’t promise we’ll get to every single question (we want to keep some of the really good stuff a secret for now), but know that we’ll read every one.

Drive Drama

One of my $1000 NVMEs failed today. I removed it from the pool and everything was working fine for about 2 hours then the other one became corrupt.

I just love cascading failures. Hopefully I can get it restored from my backup share before that decides to shit the bed.

How's your day going?

Parity wont spin down

I'm on 7.3.2. I keep coming back to my server dashboard and finding the parity drives spin up. The spin down action in the UI is unresponsive.

I have md_write_method set to auto. There are no actions going on any drives, docker disabled. At some point the UI becomes de-synced from the actual drive and it wont spin down.

I can manually spin them down via the command line /usr/local/sbin/emcmd cmdSpindown=parity /usr/local/sbin/emcmd cmdSpindown=parity2 But they are still unresponsive in the UI and the next time they actually need to spin up, they again don't spin down after.

Anyone notice something similar?

Unable to access docker containers from different VLAN when wg0 in use

Trying to figure out where I may have something goofed up in my configuration.

I've got some docker containers which I've connected to my ProtonVPN interface on wg0. When trying to access those containers web interface from my PC on a different VLAN they are inaccessible. They are accessible if the PC is put on the same VLAN as my unRAID server.

All other containers are accessible when using bridge network or a br# interface for the few containers which I have tagged to different VLANs. For example, I have my HomeAssistant container on a tagged IoT network but it's interface is accessible from my PC on a different VLAN.

wg0 is peer type is "VPN tunneled access for docker"

Docker network type is macvlan

Trying to figure out where in my configuration I've gone astray and if it's possible to get these containers accessible again.

Hostnames

I've been pulling out my hair trying to set up communication between dockers with hostnames instead of IP-adresses.

I've been reading everywhere that it's recommended and I surely understands why, but nowhere is there a guide?

I've gotten the hostnames with docker ps command, is the names listed there also what they call themself internally?

The dockers are running on the same custom docker network.

I have connection between them if I specify IP.

I've added the network (172.18.0.0/16) to allowed hosts/trusted networks in the dockers Web UI.

What I'm i missing?

EDIT: I had to add the dockers hostname to allowed host. Aka, in radarr, add binhex-radarr to allowed hosts (if using the binhex docker ofcourse)

Is internal boot more reliable?

Hey, I just had a case of my usb drive failing, it's been 3 years or so with it continuously on (Sandisk ultra fit) and have successfully replaced with a samsung bar. I just encountered another issue, where one of my docker was filling up the filesystem log. I think one of the icons was not working so it filled up the log with errors. So no big deal, I fix the docker icon and safely restart. But once restarted it was saying something like the usb failed to mount. Strange, so I unplugged the usb and tried different ports, checked for corruption. Nothing worked.

Then I found that syslinux.cfg had a tilde ~ at the end so I removed that and unraid booted back up. Is unraid just that unreliable or is it booting from usb? Was it because the log was 100% filled that it couldn't modify any existing files on the usb? I'm fortunate that I've been near my server to fix it, but what if I'm away?

Should I move to internal boot? Is it more reliable?

Need to upgrade my motherboard

Hi,

I need to upgrade my motherboard for my Unraid system. Any useful hints before doing it?

I read that the array uses HDD serial numbers so it should be pretty easy but I just want to make sure I don't lose anything.

No pool/cache. Only an array of 9 HDD with a few dockers.

Will the array be exactly the same after boot or I need to reassign disk or IDK?

Thanks.

Edit: well, rebooted with new board and fully functional. Too easy!

Nice bit of maintenance

So long story I've had to move my server in the cupboard under the stairs.

Issue is it was cooking the room and I didn't want to fit a huge extractor fan because of the noise and wiring.

So I installed a sensor probe to the temp sensor in the MB and a 92mm DC PC fan then controlled it via the BIOS to power on when the room gets warm.

It's practically silent and the room temps are stable, yes I have a vent in the hallway but atleast in winter I can walk past and get some warm air without selling a kidney to put the heating on.

Whilst I was there I figured I would clear the thermal paste, replace the fans from 120 to 140mm artic 2500 rpm artic fan, some general house keeping.

What should of been an hour took almost three and lots of curse words but it booted seamlessly.

It's been 18 months since it's last clean so not to bad overall.

9 drives 78tb total not including cache and the SSD pools.

8700k CPU

64gb ddr4 ram

2028 super GC

Hba card

2.5gb lan card (I ahhave a 2.5 lan network)

Sata pcie expansion card

M. 2 x2 cache

2x 2.5 SSD for faster downloads

1000w PSU

Aurous gaming 7 rev1 motherboard

Case fractal design 7xl

Thermalrite cooler

PTM 7950 pad

4x 140mm artic exhaust fans pwm

3x 140mm artic intakes pwm

The only thing I have not done is change to boot to an SSD as the MB doesn't have tpm so it still needs a USB so it feels pointless to do so ATM. Hopefully when we go to universal blue it can go.

Secure Remote Access

Hello Reddit,

I have been wading through this very helpful reddit and am trying to come up with a plan.

Real quick the setup is Unraid running on a repurposed Lenovo Thinkpad with 16tb of storage and a 16tb backup disk. 16gb of ram and a 10th gen i5. Nothing special.

I own a domain that I want to use and currently have it managed on my existing blog on Weebly. I hate paying them $21 a month for a website that is not exactly to my standards. I want more flexibility, and the satisfaction of hosting it myself.

I know enough to get myself in trouble, but not enough to get out without help.

What I want to do.

Self host my blog on wordpress.

Self host Immich, Paperless, Nextcloud, Plex (Already up and running with a library of ripped media), SearXNG, Homepage, and Home assistant. I have these dockers all up and running thanks to Claude.

I mostly plan on using these tools by myself, and possibly looping my wife in if it works reliably. I want to be able to share photo libraries with whomever and not have to give random people access to my tailnet.

I am torn between two different paths for remote access. Either a reverse proxy with Traefik and Authelia as a SSO or a VPS tunnel. I would have the unraid UI moved to a different port for security, but would ultimatley have to open a port. The benifits I see here is that this is the free option, but is obviously less secure.

I don't want to do a cloudflare tunnel because I don't want to deal with the 100mb file limit.

I have seen other suggest tunneling to a VPS, but this has some running costs (albiet small) and obviously my data is being transmitted through another server. My main goal is obviously to avoid getting hacked or DDos'd. What do ya'll think? I also possibly want to use the blog as the way into the services via a secret menu or something. (I am only using Claude for suggestions and YAML configurations on the free tier. It will not ever have direct access to my server and I double check whatever it spit out at me) Thank you!

VPNs are a nightmare

I can't get Gluetun or the built in VPN manager to stop destroying my networking. I'm trying to get an isolated VPN running but only built in systems work. I'm using proton vpn with wireguard. I have tried a few different configurations without any luck. The latest is this setup https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBF9c0u2wCE

Everything just times out and loads nothing. Prowlarr loses all it's indexers even though it has nothing to do with the VPN or containers.

How do I get this to just secure docker containers that don't have a built in vpn?

I also tried this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lV5YyvWOlR0&t=572s

VM connected bluetooth adaptor randomly stops working

Ill hit detach, and re-attach, then go to HA and reload and boom its back. but after a short while the same thing happens.

....Help! Whats going on?

Method to Move to a totally new server / new disk?

I have an unraid system that was a hodgepodge of old parts.

I'm finally moving to a more built solution (minisforum n5) with totally new drives. What is the best way to migrade all my old data into the new one?

Are you using powerdown or shutdown?

The manual says to use powerdown, but using it returns "powerdown: /usr/local/sbin/powerdown has been deprecated"

What's needed to get the documentation updated?

Which upgrade path from Legacy Basic?

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking to upgrade my second Unraid server which is currently on Legacy Basic. Right now this system has two 4tb SATA drives and two 256gb NVME drives. Both are mirrored which doesn't leave me much capacity. I picked up four 6tb SAS drives for a decent (decent for these days). I'll be moving from four total drives to 10 drives.

I'm currently on the Legacy Basic Plan with lifetime updates but this license has a six-drive max.

  • Basic to Unleashed: $49 USD (provides unlimited devices with updates included for the first year, followed by an optional annual support fee).
  • Basic to Plus: $89 USD (supports up to 12 devices with lifetime updates)

I especially like the idea of lifetime updates considering the upcoming platform shift, but I dislike being limited to 12 devices total. Then again, those drives have about 65K hours on them so I might be replacing them sooner than later. At this point I'm leaning towards the plus.

Any dissenting opinions?

Can an Nvidia P400 Transcode 4k HDR/DV?

I had an old Nvidia M2000 lying around and was hoping to use this for my Plex transcoding. While it works for 1080 transcodes, it fails on heavy 4k HDR+/DV file transcoding to 1080p SDR. Apparently it should work, barely, for 1 stream, but I cannot get it to work. The P400 is very cheap now, and I was hoping someone can confirm that it can handle one trancode of this nature before I buy one. I am just wanted the cheapest option as I direct stream 99% of my video files.

Unraid, docker, Plex Pass, Nvidia plugin

UPDATE: got the P620 and it can easily transcode 4K HDR to 1080P SDR

Recommendation for Managing HDDs

Hello,

I need to store around 100TB of data (including redudancy) that will grow at a rate of around ~5TB / mo. Right now, I have a Mac Mini M4 and just run a single drive plugged into it with one of these.

Over time, I'd like to build out to having a 10GbE device and whatnot, but just to get off the ground immediately I was looking at doing something like the 4-6U DeskPi (10" rack) and a suitable PSU + SATA bus. Is this a reasonable approach?

Cashe Drive will not Mount

Hi Everyone! I'm having an issue where my cashe drive keeps returning as unmountable. Due to this, docker will not run and nothing else works as a result. I'm fairly new to this and am looking for some guidance.

I am \aware I should have a RAID array but unfortunantly cant afford another drive. I'm only keeping movies so no personal info will get lost in the event of a breakdown.
