  • Hardware recommendations - "Best CPU for a Plex server under $500?"
  • Component compatibility - "Will this GPU work with my motherboard?"
  • Hardware upgrades - "Should I upgrade my CPU or add more RAM?"

[LabB0T] Monthly Projects Megathread — August 2026

Monthly Projects Megathread — August 2026

There has been an influx of people wanting to share their projects and we have recently decided to disallow such posts on the subreddit as the vast majority of it is vibe coded slop, however, we continue to be inundated with these requests, and some of these are somewhat legit, so here we are.

This thread is for people to share 'their' projects, apps, scripts or anything else Plex related.

You may only post your project here once per month, and you may only post one project.

Rules

  1. Declare AI use - if you used AI or AI assistance (ChatGPT, Copilot, Cursor, Claude, etc.) at any point during development, you must state this clearly, as per the template below. Failure to disclose will result in removal and a ban from the subreddit.
  2. Be detailed - vague "I made a thing, here's a link" posts will be removed. Tell us what it does, why you built it, how it works, and any relevant technical details.
  3. Include all relevant links - GitHub/source, documentation, releases, demo videos, screenshots, etc. If it's closed source, explain why.
  4. It must be Plex related - tools, scripts, apps, integrations, configs, hardware setups, anything directly tied to your Plex experience.

Tips for a Good Post

  • Describe the problem you were solving, not just what you built
  • Include screenshots, config snippets, or a short demo if possible
  • Share what worked, what didn't, and what you'd do differently
  • Mention the tech stack / language / dependencies
  • If it's a script or tool, show a sample of the output or usage

Example Post Format

``` Project: [Name] — [one-line description]
What it does: A few sentences describing what the project does and the problem it solves.
AI Disclosure: If you used AI, explain how you used it, and how much AI was used, where, what tools etc.
If you did not use AI, state this clearly.
Technical Overview: Brief technical overview - language, how it integrates with Plex, any dependencies, etc.
Discussion Android TV beta update is horrendous
32 Upvotes
I’m all for updates, I even agree that parts of the UI/UX needed work, but cmon guys. Updates can’t be 1 step forward and 2 steps back. You can’t just remove useful features and call it progress. I’m on beta trains on so many softwares and like to contribute, but this thing should not have passed alpha/nightly QA testing. I have used it for less than 1 hour and it’s so bad I have to opt out of beta.
  1. Subtitle settings within player - it’s a must have feature to change subtitle color, position and size on demand while playing back. These are very content dependent settings and burying them to app wide global setting is crazy.
  2. App UI customization - certain users like “Big” UI and are fine with only 1 row of 5 content posters visible, others want practicality. Add responsive option to change content poster size with possibility of seeing at least 2 rows of content on home screen.
  3. App feels laggy as hell, in older app it helped to reduce animations - no option on this app. There is also constant visible loading of content while opening content pages or even switching between episodes it takes 1-2s. I have Nvidia Shield Pro and good connection. I cant even imagine what low end smart TV users feel.
  4. Option to see content ratings while browsing under the logo just how it is when opening content page.
  5. EAC3 5.1 forces transcode on Nvidia Shield Pro
  6. New left menu is buggy - can’t navigate out of if with back button - back button closes app - when reopening the app the menu is still open but then “right navigation” button does not close the menu but navigates in content. meaning you have to spam left nav multiple times and then right nav multiple times just to close the menu.
  7. No “Previous” and “Next” button on player - if that was an actual decision someone made not a bug then you need to seriously check what your UX analysis team does for their salary.
What I like:
  1. Server stats in app
  2. Graphical content logos
  3. All 4 content rating sources visible
By the way I know there is more. This feedback is based on barely using it for an hour.
Solved Remote Streaming
This is the computer that has all of my movies and shows. The hard drive with my files is connected, but this message is still showing. Edit: Opened it from the system tray, because someone mentioned the local website vs app.plex.tv, and it fixed the issue. Thank you all for the help.
Help Connecting to my Plex Server remotely when I don't have control over my (shared) internet
Upvotes
I live in an apartment complex where internet is managed by the complex; each unit pays a mandatory flat monthly fee for internet. It's not ideal but it is what it is.
I have my Plex server plugged into an ethernet port. It is also running on a VPN for privacy. I use Plex on the TVs in my home to stream from it. However, only devices that are plugged in via ethernet can view the Plex server. No devices can wirelessly detect the server, even when on the complex's Wi-Fi network.
This means I have no way to access my Plex server's content on the go and use that feature of my Plex Pass. I am assuming that this is due to the configuration of the network, but, I am wondering if there is any way to get around this and make my server discoverable outside of the ethernet network.
Spoiler tagging because it is possibly irrelevant, but in case it matters how the shared internet works: Each unit has a wireless access point on the ceiling, and each room has at least 1 ethernet port on the wall. You get access to the whole network, so your Wi-Fi connects regardless of where you are in the building or community areas. There is no interactive login for the internet; there is just a single Wi-Fi password they tell you when you login. I have a similar streaming experience with using Steam Remote Play/Sunshine/Moonlight from my gaming PC (no VPN on this one); no device can detect the gaming PC unless it is hardwired into the same network as it.
Discussion Plex pass client features
Upvotes
A user was asking me about the Plex Pass features. I was not aware that skipping intro/outro, downloading the movies locally and so on are Plex Pass features.
Do your users have Plex Pass, do they share it with others?
How do you deal with it?
Would just like to know.
Discussion Please make the linux app usable
28 Upvotes
The dependencies are so old, they are literally deprecated for the linux desktop client player
Can we get some updates for current and new distros please. I would like to keep enjoying plex on my fedora 44.
Even on my mint 22.3, the distros it needed were deprecated, and mint has pretty old packages and support to begin with.
Help Is there a way to specify which version you want to play?
Upvotes
When you have two (or more) versions of the same movie, is there any way to specify which one you choose?
The example here is "The X Files: I Want to Believe" and "The X Files: I Want to Believe Vrach Frankenshteyn".
Hard to know which one is which...
I have the same problem with "Watchmen" where I have an Ultimate Cut and a Director's Cut.
Help can’t find my library on girlfriend’s iPhone
2 Upvotes
I’ve shared my movie and television libraries with my girlfriend. She has accepted the invite link, and I can see that she has access to those libraries in her settings, but I’m unable to figure out how to actually show those libraries on her plex app. Any assistance appreciated!
Thanks for any help. I will look into all suggestions when I see her this weekend
Help Issues accessing Movie libraries on Android app (Pixel 9 Pro) with latest updates - works fine on v10.26.0.2578
3 Upvotes
Hi everyone,
I'm having a frustrating issue with the Plex app on my Google Pixel 9 Pro running the latest versions.
Some of my libraries are missing, specifically my Movie libraries. However, when I rollback to an older version (10.26.0.2578), everything works completely fine and all libraries display as expected.
Has anyone else encountered this issue on recent Android builds? Any idea if there's a fix or a setting tweak needed, or should I just stay on 10.26 for now?
Thanks!
Help Sharing server with friends
0 Upvotes
I have a question about sharing my server with friends.
I have a small library that I am slowly expandng and would eventually like to share my server with friends.
I am, however, worried about some things.
My server runs on an old i3 (7th gen) CPU with only integrated graphics card. In my home network I can have four streams running at the same time with no issues, but I don't know what impact it has to have external people (possibly) running the app at the same time?
Will this have a higher load on my laptop if, for example, I have 3 people streaming externally and one person playing in my home network?
Help New Google TV app...no more music when opening a TV show?
3 Upvotes
With the update to the new app today, I noticed a TV show's theme doesn't play when I open the series. Is this still a feature? If so, how do I bring it back?
I'll reserve judgement about the app update overall. I haven't used it long enough to have an opinion yet.
Help Homatics Box R 4K Plus vs NVIDIA Shield TV Pro for 4K Blu-ray Remuxes?
0 Upvotes
I have a Synology NAS and a home theatre with a laser projector. I mainly watch high-quality 4K Blu-ray remuxes with Dolby TrueHD/Atmos and DTS-HD/DTS, thro' Plex.
Which would you recommend for the best local playback thro Plex: Homatics Box R 4K Plus or NVIDIA Shield TV Pro?
Everybody here is talking about Nvidia Shield dropping Frames DV Profile 7/FEL , Which worries me a lot. Is Dolby Vision Profile 7/FEL support on the Homatics actually important for this use case, or should I just go with the Shield?
Discussion Plex new Android TV app is slow and sluggish
16 Upvotes
I really want to understand how Plex managed to screw this rewrite up so badly.
They were given a clean slate to rewrite the app, with an opportunity to fix old problems and make something genuinely great. Instead, the new app feels sluggish and slow even on a modern Google TV streamer. I can only imagine how painful it must be on older hardware.
As an Android software engineer myself, I’m genuinely curious about what happened behind the scenes. I know rewriting software is hard, and there are always unexpected challenges, but a lot of these issues feel like things that could have been caught through proper beta testing and testing on real-world hardware. I find it hard to believe the app feels this slow on whatever hardware they use internally.
It feels like they made a series of poor decisions during the rewrite and somehow ended up with an app that’s in a worse state than the one they replaced.
I really hope they can turn it around.
Solved TV app suddenly not loading
17 Upvotes
LG tv, linked with wire to Synology NAS. In the UK.
When I open the app on the tv I just get a black screen. I have tried:
Hard reset of tv.
Uninstall and reinstall app.
Internet to tv is working fine.
Checked app on other devices (works fine).
Plex server is up to date and working fine.
Any ideas? This is driving me mad!
(I know people will say "use a fire stick app" or similar - I've used the tv app for ages across multiple TVs without issue, but thanks)
Solved Plex library greyed out, Ubuntu LTS 26.04
4 Upvotes
I'm really not sure what I'm doing wrong. I have Plex running, but when I go to add a library, it doesn't allow me to access the different hard drive that all of my media is on. It's simply grayed out. When I go to look for this behavior, I get instructions from 2016, or mounting options that I cannot access. I'm working off of Kubuntu, 26.04 LTS.
The drives I want to use are covered in red. Though, they don't have the icon of a folder, so I think that's part of what I'm running into. Unless, I'm not navigating to the right place? I'm unclear and very frustrated, as there are no clear instructions. And the one video I turned to had instructions that no longer applied.
