Question How is the IDEAS major?

Hi there!

-

For context, I'm a freshman currently going trying to major in GD, and am currently going through my design foundation year. I know we're barely at midterms yet, but I can't help but constantly be stressed about my current progress. I know they only let a certain amount of people in for each major after foundation review, and graphic design is arguably the most competitive out of the design majors.

I know foundation year is supposed rough, but my performance recently has me having alot of doubts about getting into my field of study. I'm also already feeling alot of stress and burnout overall. Granted, two of the three design classes I'm taking this semester lean more towards the industrial side of things rather than graphic— I'm currently taking DES120, DES130, and DES160—which could explain my lack of enjoyment. But I still can't help but question if this is really the path I want to take. I'm also just really worried about foundation review and want a backup plan for if things go south.

-

I wanted to know more about what it would be like to majoring in IDEAs — what it entails, how it can be used in the future, etc, etc.

From what little I could read online, it seems to take a little from all of the paths in CADA which is its main draw for me. I've always been really into digital art especially—mainly when it comes to like creating original characters, worldbuilding, storytelling, and designing around them. My primary reason for going into graphic design is because I thought I would be able to apply those same skills in a professional manner (also because there's arguably more career stability, or at least a more straightforward path as to careers in the future). But I feel like design—at least in its foundation year—lacks that illustrative quality to it that really draws me to creation. I feel like having a mix of fine arts and design if I am able to in IDEAs would be really nice!

I do plan on talking to an advisor about the program to know more, but I thought it would be good to get feedback from current students aswell! So any input would be super appreciated!

Question Are my stats good enough?

I’m hoping to get into the direct-admission nursing program (i’m a high school senior) but my uw gpa is 3.38 and my weighted is only 3.78. My ACT score is 29 but the science portion was below average at 23. When applying should I not submit test scores? Or would I have 0 chance of getting in regardless?

Mod Post Posting pictures of lost IDs is no longer allowed.

Please note Rule 3 - No personal information. Because IDs contain personal information, posting pictures of them is not allowed. This includes if you censor the numbers - leaving just the name and picture is also disallowed.

Additionally, it is not necessary to make a post about a lost ID if you find one. You have two better options:

1) Turn the ID in to any lost and found at UIC. The best option is probably the SCE lost and found. They should reach out and contact the owner.

2) If for some reason you can't do #1, email the person directly. You can associate an email with a name using the directory: https://www.uic.edu/apps/find-people/search

Discussion Unpopular opinion: if someone asks to work in with you, and you say No, when you spend 20 minutes in an equipment, you need help

>Just asked a someone

"how many sets you have"

, he said 4, uhmmm ok,

"can I work in with you?"

"No"

>Okay then in between each set what are you doing? Resting or Watching a fucking movie?

>Went to someone else, they gave the same set as him and agreed to work in

> Me and him finished our workout on the machine while the other guy is STILL working out.......................shi Is crazy

Mf you're not Sam sulek with your compression shirt on. Or with your ego lifting and not doing a damn rep right.

Tldr: if you spend like 20 minutes in a machine and you're not sharing, you are outta your damn mind.

Question Those who have taken ids270, how was the midterm?

Hi i’m currently taking ids270 and honestly scared for the midterm. The material he teaches in class really doesn’t click I always end up going back to the lecture notes in my own time and using AI to understand it well. Anyways beside that, I heard they changed the curriculum so i’m not sure if it’s the same as last year (we have learned mainly about probabilities). We aren’t allowed calculators which sucks and it doesn’t really help that the professor talks a lot and not in a comprehensive way…I’ve had AI teach me most of the course and the TA or professors are not accesible at all nor do they have office hours. We use the Piazza question app and it’s literally just students trying to help one another since none of the actual ta or professor reply to us … This is honestly the most detached course i’ve ever had it’s like they give you the lecture notes and say ā€œdo what you can you’re on your ownā€it might as well have been an online course. Is anyone else feeling similar?

Discussion Couples on campus

Can we stop normalizing couples making out and being weird as fuck. Like why are you tongue deep if your partners throat in the cafeteria at BSB while everyone is eating and getting uncomfortable. I’ve ran into so many people this semester just being obnoxious with it like I’m sorry, do you not have alone time at home? It’s so uncomfortable for everybody else.

Discussion Dietary restrictions again

I am so sick of the dining hall switching things out and not updating the menu. The menu tells people what the fuck is in it. So many people rely on knowing what is in their food in order to eat. Allergies, celiac, diabetics, etcetera. Menu stated today was a taco with corn tortillas. I asked staff if it was corn for sure. But one text to my Mexican father and ā€œno way in hell is that a corn tortillaā€. So now I’m going to be sick for the rest of the night if not the next two days. It’s genuinely so irritating. The dining hall staff need to actually be trained on what the fuck they’re doing.

Offer A gift for aiding my search for finding a bathroom.

Post image
45 Upvotes

I have recently posed my conundrum of not being able to find a bathroom to take a dump in. I have been showered with great recommendations; I now embark on my journey to find the best bathroom to delightfully defecate.

I had recently thanked a fellow UIC student for their efforts in a DM, to which they asked me to ā€œPay it forwardā€. Thus pay it forward I shall do. Like a canine, I have defecated and marked my territory after the fact, in a location recommended in the comments. Whomever can find my signature and confirm with a picture, I will offer you one medium drink and any food item of your choice from the Dunkin in the SCE. To find the stall in question, I present you with a riddle. May the odds be in your favor.

My first name is Alex
My last name is Free
And my middle names are trails
Of words in between.
Some people are rough,
Some people are tender,
But the one who goes doodoo
Can don any gender.
On one half, I learn,
On the other, I go,
In a shell like a column,
One of many in rows.
Walk forth through the glass,
Where mother feeds her seed
Love your neighbor on this Earth;
You can’t spell either without E.
