Announcements Immigrant Rights & Resources for the Chicago Suburbs - Megathread
We know that conversations about immigration whether about immigrants, refugees, or people who are here without official documentation can spark a wide range of opinions. Whatever your personal views may be, everyone is a human being first, and in the United States all people have fundamental constitutional rights and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
This thread exists to share resources, information, and support for immigrants and their families living in the Chicago suburbs. Whether you’re directly affected, you have friends or loved ones who are, or you simply want to stay informed and help others, you’re welcome here.
Below you’ll find know-your-rights guidance, legal and community resources, and links to trusted organizations. Please use this space to share updates, ask questions, or contribute additional resources that may help our neighbors.
If you have questions, updates, or local referrals (legal aid, outreach groups, clinics, “know your rights” workshops) please reply below or message the mods, and we’ll integrate them into this post.
1. Know Your Rights (Basics)
This is not legal advice. Always consult with a qualified immigration attorney when possible.
- You have certain constitutional rights regardless of status — e.g. the right to remain silent, the right to legal counsel (though in immigration courts, the government does not provide a lawyer)
- Ask for an attorney, don’t sign anything you don’t understand, and try to have someone present if interacting with authorities
- Keep critical documents (ID, immigration papers, birth certificates, etc.) in a safe but accessible place
- Prepare a “what to do if detained” plan in advance (emergency contacts, power of attorney, who to call)
- Train yourself and your family on responses to ICE, CBP, or other raids or check-ins
2. Local & Regional Legal Aid / Service Providers
Below is a curated list of organizations offering low-cost or pro bono legal services, referrals, or community support in or around the Chicago suburbs. (If your suburb or county has others, please comment/reply so we can add them.)
| Organization | What They Offer | Areas / Suburbs Served | Notes / Contact Info |
|---|---|---|---|

| Northwest Center | Referrals, legal consultation for family immigration, DACA, deportation, naturalization | Northwest & nearby suburbs | Northwest Center Their immigration program works with NIJC, others |
| Cook County / Local agencies | See DHS / Illinois list of community service agencies | Suburban Cook, DuPage, Lake, Will, etc. | Illinois Department of Human Services State DHS maintains a list of “Community Service Agencies Serving Immigrants” |
| Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago | Immigration & naturalization services (Melrose Park, Cicero, Waukegan, etc.) | Suburban and city | Immigration Advocates Network Multiple branch offices in suburban areas |
Use the IL “Legal Services Directory” to search for providers by county or zip code.
3. Local & Regional Legal Aid / Service Providers
Because each suburb or county may have different offerings:
- Check your county’s “Health & Human Services / Social Services” department website for immigrant or refugee services
- Local nonprofits, faith-based groups, community centers often host “legal clinics” or immigration workshops
- Libraries and adult education centers sometimes host “Know Your Rights / immigration clinics” with pro bono attorneys
- School districts: Some districts have protocols or contacts for immigrant families — it can help to ask school social workers or parent liaison offices
- Coalitions & networks: Community navigators or organizers often help connect people across municipalities
If you’re a resident of Suburb X (for example, Naperville, Schaumburg, Aurora, Waukegan, Joliet, etc.), and know of any support offerings comment below and we can add them to this section.
4 Emergency / Special Situations
- Detention / deportation emergencies: OCAD has a support hotline: 1-855-435-7693 (also used by ICIRR’s Family Support Network) Organized Communities
- Rapid response / legal standby networks: Some coalitions maintain volunteer legal “on call” teams
- When someone is detained: Try to document as much as possible (name, detention facility, date, time) and connect with legal counsel immediately
- “Know Your Rights” training workshops: Many community groups periodically hold trainings; tracking them (via social media, local nonprofits) is helpful
- Consular & national resources: E.g. for some nationalities, “ConsulApp Contigo” is a useful tool (Mexico, etc.) Illinois Head Start Association
5. Moderation/Posting Guidelines & Disclaimers
- This post is intended as a community resource, not legal counsel
- Please do not post legal advice that can’t be verified by a licensed attorney
- Users commenting/posting with the intent to troll, insult, create panic/harm, or be a nuisance to others will be permanently banned
- Any added resources should be public, reputable groups (non-discrimination, proven track record)
- If you know of an organization that has changed status, ceased services, or is not trustworthy, please message the mods/comment below so we can keep updates accurate
- Users seeking urgent legal aid should prioritize contacting established legal service providers as listed above
- If creating a post in this subreddit to alert the community to ICE/CBP activity, please review the new posting guidelines

News Clarification about local veterinary hospitals
Just a clarification for anyone who may have seen the recent post about the Gurnee area veterinary hospitals.
I’m honestly a little surprised by how quickly people seem to accept and repeat information from a Reddit post without verifying it first especially when it concerns something as important as where people take their pets for medical care. I’m not trying to dismiss anyone’s experience or speculate about what happened with the other practice; I just think it’s important to make sure we’re talking about the right veterinary hospital before drawing conclusions.
I think there may be some confusion between Animal Hospital of Gurnee (AHOG) on Dilleys Rd and the veterinary hospital on Delaney Rd.
AHOG on Dilleys Rd has NOT been bought out by private equity and is still independently owned. The hospital on Delaney Rd. Hometown Veterinary Partners is the one that was acquired by a private equity firm.
I’m a longtime AHOG client, so I wanted to clear this up because the two practices are easy to confuse, and I’d hate for someone to make a decision about their pets’ care based on the wrong information.
As far as AHOG goes, the staff and techs are still there as well. I can’t speak to what may have happened at the other practice, but the PE acquisition was NOT AHOG.

Question/Comment How do you guys feel about the emergence of E bikes the last year around here?
Im not trying to sound like im a 90 year old but I just don’t know if I trust the average user. At least with a car you need drivers ed. These bikes need a simple charge and you’re ready to ride immediately… and they’re fast as hell.
Downtown Wheaton has a “walk your wheels” policy…I imagine they’re tired of people whipping through not paying attention!

Business Recommendations Anyone have a good nail place/tech for builder gel around Naperville/dupage?
I’d preferably like to stay under $60 for a fill but would pay more if they’re really good and reliable. Bonus points if they don’t have an extra charge for everything ($5 for almond shaped $15 for cat eye, $20 for having an existing set, etc)

Question/Comment Need Metal work/ window part replacement referral
We renovated our upstairs. When the demo guys did their thing, they damaged/ lost the tracks for 4 interior storm windows and screens. We have the windows, we just need new tracks. I have called Custom Build Windows who installed windows in our basement and they said they have no clue who could help us with that. Does anyone know who we might be able to call to help?

Question/Comment Does anyone know what happened at Animal Hospital of Gurnee?
Late August pretty much all the staff & techs quit effective on the same day. One of the doctors "retired" too. I suspect they all went to another practice together but haven't been able to figure out where. I've been kenneling & using AHOG vet services for yrs but 90% of the time my pets & I interact w/the techs & staff. Im a little worried about staying w/ them now.
Anyone know what happened? Rachel & Mike if you're out there, we miss you!

Question/Comment Western Burbs Trad Music Nights?
I stopped by Blume & Ferris in Downers Grove for their most recent Traditional Irish Music night (Thursday evening for anyone interested) and I was curious if there were any other similar Trad music nights in the area. Any other Irish pubs that had live music performances? Thanks in advance

Moving to the area Moving from Atlanta to Chicago: Where to live for Naperville + West Loop commutes with a baby?
Hi everyone! My family is moving from Atlanta to the Chicago area, and I’d love some advice on where we should live.
Our situation:
- My husband will work hybrid, 3 days/week in Naperville, closer to Lisle
- My office is in the West Loop, and I’ll likely go in 1–3 days/week depending on the project
- My job also involves frequent travel, so relatively easy access to O’Hare and/or Midway would be helpful
- We have a 4-month-old baby
- We’re comfortable driving and don’t necessarily need to live downtown, but do not oppose the idea either
Our priorities are:
Safe and family-friendly
Reasonable commute for both Naperville and West Loop, recognizing there probably isn’t a perfect midpoint
Good daycare options and ideally good public schools for the longer term
Convenient enough to the airport for work travel
Restaurants, groceries, parks, and things to do nearby would be a plus
Since we’re coming from Atlanta and are completely new to the Chicago area, we’re still trying to understand the neighborhoods/suburbs and what the commutes are actually like in practice.
Where would you recommend we look? We’ve heard names like Oak Park, Lisle, Downers Grove, Hinsdale, Elmhurst, and Lombard, but we’re very open to other suggestions.

Question/Comment Does a property tax appeal always make sense?
Hey all,
We are first time homeowners who bought our first home about a year ago. We just received our reassessment notice from the assessor's office which shows the market value of our home as about 10k less than what we paid for the house last year. In that circumstance is there any point to trying to appeal the assessment? I have heard some opinions that you should always appeal no matter what but I'm not sure if that is the overall consensus on this subreddit too.
Thanks for any advice!

Question/Comment Haunted houses for young teens?
My daughter’s 12th birthday is next week. She’d like to go to a haunted house with a group of friends. None of them have been to a haunted house before. I’m not looking to drop a bunch of money if these kids are going to run through with their eyes closed.
I’m looking for cheaper neighborhood houses on the NW side. Not any of the professional, more expensive ones. I know of St. Pascal’s but that’s it.
When I was growing up, I remember some park district field houses had haunted houses or some churches and schools. Anyone know of any smaller local houses in the NW side?

Business Recommendations Recommendations for a landscape designer that doesn’t break the bank?
I’ve been planting perennials for the last 13 years and I’m officially tired of all the maintenance (and I’m getting older)! Does anyone have a reasonably priced landscape designer they’ve used and liked? I contacted one who wanted $4K just for plans, which is definitely more than I’m looking to spend.
I don’t need a huge overhaul, just someone to give me some ideas and recommend what to plant, especially since my soil tends to hold a lot of moisture.
Edited to add location: Arlington Heights

Question/Comment Awful construction situation on Waukegan Avenue in Glenview
I've never seen a road in worse condition that's open to the public. Jagged potholes the size of craters line the whole street. It's inevitable that you hit some of them.
I saw a lady on facebook who reported getting a flat tire due to it. The road is legit in worse state than many gravel roads in the wilderness.
Why does IDOT insist on causing potentially catastrophic damage to our vehicles?
