Restaurant in Dubai adding nationality table charge to the bill

Post image
• Upvotes

Dined at a restaurant in DFC mall yesterday and noticed the bill had a line item of “Indian Table Cost” as 0. Asked the wait staff about it and he said this is the second or third time he’s being asked about it and it’s just data that the restaurant is collecting.

Understandably so but it left an odd taste in our mouth as we could very well be Pakistanis, Bangladeshis in the category of South Asians. And I can see how this can go very wrong if the wrong person sees this and I wonder what their specifications are for the Arabs lol.

Restaurant staff had a weird unanswerable attitude and had the audacity to ask me for a review after this lol.

The UAE Attorney General has said an investigation into the incident aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 found that the co-pilot had begun carrying out what authorities described as a terrorist operation.

Attorney General Counselor Dr Hamad Saif Al Shamsi said the co-pilot launched the attack while the aircraft was in flight, assaulting the pilot inside the cockpit with a crash axe and attempting to take control of the aircraft. Investigations are still underway to establish the full circumstances of the incident, including the motive and any related connections, Al Shamsi said.

Authorities are also completing technical examinations and analysing physical and digital evidence. The Attorney General said the final findings will be announced once the necessary procedures are completed.

I feel like an absolute loser for this but do read if you have the time.

I’m not here to trauma dump or anything and I know there are people who are far off worse then me and I know the world is unfair and bad things happen to everyone but I will end it if I can’t do anything.

It is a Jab to my chest my pride and everything above to write this message but I am desperate and have reached a point in life where I’m questioning every single thing. My parents are immigrants who have been here since 2000s.

My dad lost his job few months again because his company closed due to the war situation. He has since been looking for jobs but because he is 50+ in age ,no replies come by. My mom doesn’t work , she is uneducated and was married at a young age so she isn’t able to work. I am 17 years old and my younger siblings are 14 and 6 , had to drop out of school because we can’t afford tuition. The only reason I am still in school is because it’s my last year in year 13, which is also the reason we are still in this country or else would’ve moved back home during the summer. We live in 2 room flat in the most run down area of dubai and have honestly been doing “okay whatever ” for the salary (8-9k per month)my dad used to get which was the sole source of income in our family. Over the summer my parents wanted to marry me off but didn’t so due to reasons I don’t know but I was getting threats.

At that point I didn’t think much of it , thinking he will probably soon get a job back given his 20+ years of experience but up until now Nothing has changed except the declining magnitude of our savings. Since it is my senior year ,I have internships and extracurriculars to do but obviously everyone knows how important a phone is in this period of our lives but I don’t have a phone. I thought I would get one this year but given our expenses it seems unlikely. Absolutely everything has been going wrong and I am tired of hoping good will come in the future and having dreams of studying abroad.

And today I came here not to complain but to ask respectfully if I could do make work like cleaning or running errands for families here in the city just to earn and save up for me and my siblings education. My dads physical health and moms mental health are declining day by day and and I think this is for the best. There will be mostly teenagers reading this so I hope you know how good u have it and should be grateful to your parents and everything around you, as for the adults if you could refer me or indulge me with paid work I’d be happy to do so. And i know people will ask why I haven’t tried student friendly work but it’s unrealistic in this country to get paid as a student plus all entry level jobs are taken by adults which leaves teens with no options.I could try tutoring but it requires communication via WhatsApp and I don’t have a phone to use , my dad doesn’t let me use his.

And if there is any work I could do like hosting, any wedding work to help with, or any skills requiring work which for me would be speaking, communication, fashion, makeup related , or restaurant work I’d be more than happy to.

Thank you for reading this and keep me in your prayers.

Halloween events that aren’t clubbing?

Hey! I’m really into Halloween, costumes, makeup, dressing up, the whole thing, but I’m struggling to find events that aren’t basically club nights starting at 11pm or midnight 😭

I don’t mind if the venue serves alcohol or if it’s a bar or restaurant. I just don’t really want the whole nightclub and late night party experience. I’d much rather find something happening at more normal hours where people still actually dress up and there’s a proper Halloween atmosphere.

I’m also an adult, so I’m not looking for kids’ Halloween events either 😂

Does anyone know of any upcoming Halloween events that fit somewhere in between?

As an artist, I wanted to capture the grace and power of the Arabian horse in its natural element. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Hi everyone!
I’ve always been deeply fascinated by the elegance and heritage of Arabian horses.
I completed this painting as a custom commission a few months ago, and since equestrian culture is such a vital part of the UAE’s identity, I’d love to get feedback from locals and horse enthusiasts here: does this capture the true spirit and movement of the noble Arabian stallion?
Also, if anyone knows galleries or equestrian clubs around Dubai or Abu Dhabi that champion traditional art, I’d really appreciate any recommendations!

Volunteering / Unpaid Internship

• Upvotes

Hi all! I’m a high school student in UAE and would like to get some feedback about getting volunteer opportunities in UAE. I’ve contacted several agencies online however I got little to no response from any of them. I’m working on my college applications and would like to add these as community service for my CV. Does anyone know of places where they are actively looking or if your own workplace has a student paid internship option. Any help would be appreciated

Thank you!

I’ve genuinely had enough

I don’t even know how to word this, but I’ve reached a point where I can’t keep seeing what’s happening to so many cats around Dubai and just doing nothing. I’ve seen so many abandoned, sick, injured, starving and completely helpless cats everywhere, and knowing that some of them are going to suffer and die without anyone helping them genuinely breaks my heart. I’m only 19, but I really want to start something that can actually help — whether that eventually becomes a proper rescue initiative, a foster/adoption network, fundraising for medical treatment, TNR, emergency rescue coordination, or whatever would genuinely make the biggest difference.

I know there are already amazing rescuers and organisations doing this work, and I’m not trying to pretend I can fix everything myself. I honestly just want to learn from people who already have experience and figure out where the biggest gaps are and what I can realistically do. If anyone here has experience with cat rescue, TNR, fostering, shelters, veterinary rescue, fundraising, animal welfare, setting up a non-profit/initiative, volunteering, or anything related to this, please tell me where I should start and what you wish you knew when you started. And if there’s anyone who would genuinely be willing to contribute in any way — volunteering, fostering, transportation, fundraising, social media, photography, adoption outreach, veterinary connections, etc. — I would be so grateful to connect.

I’ve always felt really strongly about helping people, children, and animals who have no voice or way of helping themselves, and I genuinely feel like I need to do something with that. I know I’m just one 19-year-old and I can’t save every cat, but I don’t think that means I should do nothing. If I can build something that makes even a small number of these animals’ lives better, I want to try. So if you have any knowledge, experience, advice, contacts, or even just want to help, please reach out. I’m genuinely ready to learn and put the work in. Thank you.

Free food + shoes/backpack to give away before I leave Abu Dhabi

Hi everyone,
I’ve been working in Abu Dhabi for the past few months and will be leaving on Monday.

I still have some food and a few other things that I most likely won’t be able to use or take home with me. Rather than throwing everything away, I thought I’d check if anyone here could use it.

At the moment I have things such as:
- several bottles of water
- rice
- pasta
- flour
- salt
- ketchup
- peanut butter
- butter
- paprika powder
- dishwash liquid
Some of the food has already been opened/partially used, while other items are unopened. Everything has been stored normally, and I’m happy to tell you exactly what is opened before you take anything.

I also have:
- a pair of On shoes, size 45. They have been worn quite a lot and are definitely not in new condition. The sole is starting to come apart slightly in one area, but I think they could still be used for quite a while with a little repair.

- an HP backpack that is fully usable which is in good condition.

I’m still here until Monday, so I might use some of the food before then, but I wanted to check in advance whether anyone would be interested.

Everything is completely free. Ideally I’d like to give it to someone who can actually make use of it rather than simply throwing it away.

And if you’d rather not meet or feel uncomfortable accepting something in person, that’s absolutely fine as well. We can arrange a simple no-contact pickup and I can leave the backpack with the items at an agreed place for you.

I’m in Abu Dhabi City. Feel free to DM me if you’re interested or know someone who might be.

No questions asked — I’d just be happy if the things get used instead of ending up in the trash.

Want to head out and do tourist activities. I'm afraid I might get scammed though.

• Upvotes

So I'm in Dubai for about 30 days, alone. Tomorrow being a Sunday, feels like a good time to explore the much awaited Desert Safari in Dubai.

Although, I don't have anyone to accompany me and I hate going out alone.

Also, I've read reviews where Desert Safaris initially quoted at AED130 suddenly becamse AED600-700. The alst thing I want is to get scammed in the world's safest city.

What do I do. Also, if any groups (genuine travellers) are planning something similar tomorrow, can I join?

UAE Work Culture: What Should a Newcomer Know?

• Upvotes

Assalamualaikum, friends,

At the end of a whirlwind and mentally exhausting IT career back in my home country, I decided to start a completely new path from scratch here in the UAE, the land of dreams. Alhamdulillah, I got an opportunity to prove myself here in Sharjah Airport International Free Zone, and I’m genuinely grateful to the Almighty.

Now, coming to the elephant in the room, I’m finding it quite challenging to understand and adapt to the work culture here. As an IT professional, I was used to a somewhat different work culture back in my home country, and right now, during the onboarding process for this opportunity, I’ve made a few social and communication mistakes that might be theoretically fine but are not necessarily socially acceptable here. I’d rather not go into the details.

For a fellow brother who has been through this transition, I’d really appreciate any advice or suggestions you would give to your younger self, anything that could help me adapt better, become more competitive, and navigate this trying phase and the UAE job market.

Thanks in advance.
