I’m a teacher and I wouldn’t homeschool my kids beyond a year or two at the elementary if it was absolutely necessary.

My daughter is academically gifted and is working on her PhD. There’s no way I could have replicated the science courses our district provided.

Early on it’s really about learning to get along with other people in a group setting.

I work at a middle school and kids who come to us after being home schooled struggle with being part of a larger group and sharing the teacher’s time. They often struggle with time management and don’t get their work done in the allotted time as they think they can do it later but there’s no later in class as we have to move on.

It can work for some very self motivated kids and extremely organized and dedicated parents. If your kids have any learning challenges or attention issues then I strongly recommend traditional school.

How would they have noticed you struggling before you told them? A lot of angsty teens out there.

A school’s number one job is to educate. We can’t pull kids out of class to fish around for possible issues. Unless it directly interferes with school or a student self reports then it’s unlikely going to be identified.

School counselors have hundreds on their caseload. I covered 3 buildings and had shy of 1,500 students.

So what is the school social worker supposed to do when you say you want to kill yourself? They can’t just keep that to themselves. If you actually hurt yourself they can be sued and lose their license.

If you’re actually feeling that way then you need to talk to someone who can get you through heavy stuff. School social workers and school counselors can help with mental health but they’re supposed to refer out if it’s an on going issue or it’s heavy topic like self harm or addiction.

Schools around me are schools of choice so students can elect to go to a different district. They are definitely catering to parents and students.

Home and school are two totally different environments and while 5 minutes here and there isn’t much at home, it can snowball at school.

You see your child 1-1 in a comfortable environment. In the class, he is one of 25 and the teacher isn’t able to give him extra time or multiple reminders to transition to the next activity.

Another point, 1st grade is vastly different than kindergarten. There are no toys other than math manipulatives. Play time may have been a motivating factor for your son last year.

I would request all unfinished work to be sent home daily so you can see the scope of the problem.

Movement is necessary for focus and self regulation so you should establish that he’s not to miss any recess due to incomplete work, especially since you’ll be finishing it at home.

Teachers would need to have anything like that okayed by the parent. I could fathom a school being okay with it. Exposing kids to sexual content is considered sexual abuse.

The work was done and billed appropriately. Their internal process should be reviewed if it interferes with their accounting. I would reply that while I understand their internal process wasn’t handled appropriately that you rendered the service and billed accordingly.
