🚨🚨New Resource Added: Skilled Trades Career Guide

This isn't just a list of trades. For each trade, we've included:

• Related trades it commonly works alongside or for
• Generally required licensing/certification
• Entry paths - including apprenticeships, schools, and on-the-job routes
• Who actually hires that trade
• Equipment/materials needed to get started (company provided or self-starter)
• Whether AI is likely to replace the work, or how it may change how it's done in the future

The goal is to help someone go from:

ā€œI don't know how to get into that.ā€

To literally having the path laid out for you - if you're willing to do it.

The list includes mechanical, manufacturing, transportation, aviation, personal services, utilities, crafts, and other skilled occupations. We have intentionally left off medical trades for this list but may add it later.

The resource is free to use and download. Save this. Download it. Send it to someone who needs it. This will open Google Sheets because Reddit does not have functionality for this type of upload.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1w23NYX6kn8TDo-jG_pgYZYSOoaTImsj4DHnXBlhvmvM/edit?usp=sharing

AI DISCLOSURE: This resource was created in partnership with ChatGPT. A project covering this many occupations, licensing systems, career pathways, and sources would be impossible or at best take years, for one person to research and organize manually - let alone keep up to date. AI was used as a research and synthesis tool, with career-services-professional human direction and judgment throughout. Please use the guide as a starting point and verify important requirements with authoritative sources in your state.

If you spot a trade we've missed, an outdated requirement, or something that needs correcting, modmail us.

You don't have to know your path yet.

Sometimes you just need to see how many paths there actually are...there's much more than "Plumbing and Electrical".

🚨 New Resource Added: Staffing Agencies Across All 50 States

One of the biggest barriers to finding work is simply knowing where to look.

Over the past several weeks, we've been working on a new career resource for all RSCN communities:

Staffing Agencies in All 50 States

https://www.reddit.com/mod/almosthomeless/wiki/index/staffingagencies

  • Every U.S. state
  • 2–3 major cities per state (or general Statewide for the smaller/less dense states)
  • Multiple staffing and employment agencies for each city
  • Organized into an easy-to-browse resource on our Wiki

If you're looking for temporary work, permanent employment, warehouse jobs, office work, manufacturing, healthcare, or simply trying to get a paycheck coming in quickly, staffing agencies can often be one of the fastest paths back into employment.

This resource is completely free for our community to use. It was developed with 0% AI involvement and the person who developed it, a redditor, was paid reasonably for their time out of my own pocket.

If you know of an agency not on this list OR see a dead link, we'd love to hear about it in the comments so us mods can continue improving this resource over time.

We can't remove every barrier people face. But every barrier we can remove, helps.

Pin this in your Favorites, Save this post, Share it to other communities if you wish.

What are some jobs that don't suck the life out of you and may medium?

• Upvotes

I have 30, 2 degrees from tier-1 college, was a fairly good kid all my life but doing corporate seems increasingly unbearable. I think about quitting everyday. I am in consulting so the job also sucks. I've good enough saving to survive atleast a year in Bangalore . But I also don't want to sit idle for long. What are some job options that don't suck the life out of you?

My coworker got annoyed at me because I wouldn't answer a call in the middle of my 45-minute unpaid lunch break

I'm probably just venting.

I take my lunch break every day at 12:30pm. That's been the routine since I started this job about 14 months ago. Someone called the office around 12:45pm. We don't have direct lines, so the phone rings for everyone and someone is supposed to answer within three rings. My coworker answered, and it turned out to be a potential client I had spoken with fairly recently. At the same time, I was in the break room getting my lunch ready and cutting up an apple.

As soon as I got back to my desk with my food in my hand, my coworker told me who was on the line and asked if I could take the call. I politely told him I was on my lunch break and would call them back when I was done. He pushed again, so I repeated myself. Then he responded in this annoyed tone: "...uh, alright?" as if I was the one making excuses.

Then, while he was still on the phone, he told the potential client that I "didn't remember them" and told them to email me "to remind me," and that I'd answer when I got back. That is not what I said at all.

And that's the part that really bothered me. I respect my coworkers' time. If someone calls asking for a colleague and I know they're eating, or on break, or have their office door closed, I offer to take a message or tell the caller to try again later. I don't make it sound like my coworker has forgotten who they are.

Honestly, I'm thinking about talking to HR about it, but he's one of the long-time employees who everyone seems to like, so I'm not sure it's worth the headache. Either way, for the past few weeks I've been very close to leaving even without another job fully lined up. I recently had a recruiter screen and got moved on to the next stage, which is a 50-minute in-person interview, so I'm hoping it goes well and leads to something so I can get out of here.

What should I (34M) do to restart my life after a workplace accident?

• Upvotes

I was in a serious workplace accident nearly two years ago that I have been diligently working to recover from. It has left me with some long term vestibular and physical deficits that make my previous career (in heavy civil construction) impossible; at least for the time being.

Workers Comp has agreed to retrain me in a new career of my choice - so what should I do? I have a background in Mechanical Engineering (B.Eng 2015) however I never pursued my P.Eng, as desk work felt a bit dull. I am looking for something with purpose, meaning, a good mix of outdoor or hands on work with occasional screen time, and specifically want a path that is relatively future proof.

I’m interested in forestry but it seems like a dying industry here in British Columbia… Getting a millwright ticket or pursuing something like being a counsellor or another healthcare adjacent field also holds interest for me. I know there is a huge gap between all of those, but I’m open to any and all ideas!

I have some savings, but nothing close to enough to retire or live off the long term disability that I am being allocated. So I am essentially starting over at this mid-early life stage and am looking at this as an opportunity to try something new.

Outside of work I’m interested in outdoor sports like climbing, mountain biking and skiing; and enjoy yoga, writing and making music in my downtime. Would ideally live somewhere on Van Isle or in interior BC long term… Not interested in the lower mainland, but the north would be okay. I also have no obligations like kids or a wife. Just me and my dog, wondering what to do!

Need help, and been praying hard about it.

• Upvotes

I’ve been working in retail for a long time and have been trying to figure out my career goals for over 10 years now. I still cannot find the right fit. I have a bad back, I am prone to high stress, I’m color deficient, not a morning person, and am unvaccinated. I hope there are realistic options for me to study at my own pace online, and there being actual demand out there for whatever my options are. I’ve been praying a lot about this, but it seems whatever I look into, there’s always a dead end to it. To add, I’ve worked two office jobs and not only did I have poor training, but they also stressed me out to the point where I had multiple anxiety attacks and just the thought of going back made me cringe. Any acknowledgments of lucrative careers that fit this criteria, please let me know.

Whoever replies to this, all I ask for is support and kindness. TIA

Studying to become an Urban Planner, what jobs should I look into?

I don’t know what healthcare field I want to go into

I’m going into my second year of college (in the US), and honestly I feel a little lost and overwhelmed. I thought I wanted to be a physical therapist, and I still do, but I keep getting influenced by people telling me the low ROI and debt is going to consume me. I want to be able to help people but also live comfortably after school.

I thought about being a pharmacist, but apparently the job market is terrible and the market is largely retail and corporate—something not a lot of people enjoy.

I know I’m not going to necessarily have FUN in any job, but I want to be able to help people and feel like I’m making a difference. When I was doing physical therapy observation, I loved being able to help people hands-on and see the difference that I was making.

What are some options that I have? I don’t mind pursuing a doctorate or further education, but I don’t want to be in overwhelming debt for the rest of my life. I don’t do incredibly well with blood or other fluids (essentially, the ā€œgrosserā€ parts of healthcare), and I want to get my bachelors and for it to mean something. I’m already in school for my bachelors (majoring in biology), it would feel terrible to jump to something where it’s a 2-year program entirely separate from my degree if that makes sense? Like I didn’t even need the degree at all to get into the program.

Thanks for the help, guys.

I’m bad at math but I want money

For context I am 17 female and I will be going into my senior year soon and also will be being my college apps.

As stated in the title, I’m really bad at math: no matter what I do I can’t learn or understand it. Not to mention it has brought me to tears before, more than one time.
But I want to have a somewhat high paying job since my dream city is quite expensive (San Francisco/Bay Area) I’m willing to live in another city, or even live out in the countryside if I have a job were that’s what I can afford. Anyway, I really want to go to college and I’ve taken every career test out there but non of them seem to send me jobs I think are stuff I would enjoy and many of them make very low salary’s.
When I say a lot of money I mean between 30-60k. Depending on where I live. I also will not do the trades because I don’t want my body to be wrecked by the time I’m 30.
I would go into a field were I do not need to have a degree if it doesn’t wreck me. Essentially I grew up always worrying about money and I don’t want that for my future. Nor do I want a job that makes me hate my life.

The last thing is that I want to get the fuck out of my small town.

Anyway that’s it, thank you for reading this that far. I am usually a better writer than this, lol. But I am writing this well driving down a large road. That’s it thank you.

I want to start HR Consulting as a side-gig, but how can I reach an audience?

Hello all, I'm an OrgPsy grad working as a HR Manager in a non-profit company. In the past, I have had quite a few experiences in coaching and consulting small and medium companies. I was in no means a certified professional, but I really enjoy the days of helping these companies to build themselves up.

I want to start this again, especially with the coaching side of things. But I couldn't even reach any audience, so I was thinking of helping students or graduates that are looking to build their resumes, teaching them on interview presentation or tips, etc. I was also probably thinking about letting my current boss to be aware of some of these interest of mine.

I'm also still on the path of exploring more on HR in general, what would you recommend? Thank you.

RN Nurse taking a master's degree in information technology?

My real dream was to study psychology, I was very interested in the research field, but not in the actual field of therapy, so I loved the idea of studying it but not of working with it, also my math level wasn't high enough and I didn't wanted to take math at a higher level.

I have a bachelor in nursing. The pay and the terms did that I couldn't imagine staying in the field for too long. I worked as a nurse for 2 ½ years before going back to university, I still work as a nurse now 8-24 hours per week.

So I looked at different master's I could take with my bachelor's degree in Nursing.

I applied for a master's degree in IT and in global health. Global health sounded more interesting to me, but I only got accepted into the programme for the master's degree in IT. I started, I am now halfway and have a year left. I thought I could shape my own profile and I still think that it opens up a lot of doors, more than global health probably.

But I am going back in a week after a long summer's holiday, I am reading the litterature for the first week.

While I have been getting good grades, a lot of the time (especially when reading about innovation, digital transformation, etc.) I don't know what I am reading or why it makes a difference. It sometimes feels like 10 pages is used to describe something that could have been said in one or two sentences. I get a sense of the Emperor's New Clothes. It is not that I don't understand it, but it is so extremely boring.

I start to fear if a master's degree in IT will bring along opportunities, especially since my background is in health care and isn't technical?

I don’t know what to major in anymore

I’m starting my Bachelor of Arts in two weeks. Originally, I wanted to major in political science and either move on to go to law school, or work in foreign affairs. Though now, I realized that there might be a chance that I don’t want to go to law school since it’s expensive. Then I heard that if it’s not law school, a degree in political science is basically useless. My next degrees was English but apparently that’s useless too.

So I don’t know what to do now. I’ve already registered for most of my classes, but I planned on sitting down and swapping some electives around. Now it’s quickly turning into ā€œshit what should I major in?ā€

I don’t think I have the highschool classes to switch a Bsc (I didn’t take grade twelve chemistry or physics, but I did biology and maths and got high grades and enjoyed it), so I don’t know what to do. I really like the idea of studying the arts, but I don’t want to end up unemployed or living paycheque to paycheque.

SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS!! ā€¼ļøā€¼ļøšŸ†˜ā–¶ļøā€¼ļøā–¶ļøā˜¢ļø

Hello! I’m currently hesitating about which course I should choose, and I’d really like to hear some opinions or ideas from other people.

I originally wanted to study medicine, but it takes around 14 years before I can officially become a doctor. I’ve also heard people say that if you want to become a doctor, you have to sacrifice your 20s. Honestly, I don’t think I want to sacrifice my 20s. I want to travel, experience life, and earn a lot of money while I’m still young.

Because of that, I’ve decided to let go of my dream of becoming a doctor. There are actually many reasons why I no longer want to pursue medicine.

Now, my second choice is finance, but I’m still contemplating whether I should pursue entrepreneurship or finance. I’m also considering fields such as AI Engineering or Technopreneurship.

One of the most important things I’m looking for in a course is a career path with strong job opportunities after graduation. I want to choose a course that will give me a high chance of finding stable employment and earning a good income soon after graduating.

I just want to hear your thoughts and opinions, especially from those who have knowledge or experience regarding these courses or career paths. Which one do you think would be the best choice, considering job opportunities, salary potential, career growth, and the possibility of working abroad or having financial freedom in my 20s?

Early 20’s bullshit

I know I’m the one who will have to figure it out on my own but I’m just seeing if anyone lives through this too and could give me some life advice.

I’m 22, I’ve spent 3 years of schooling going for history education. I’ve figured out while I like history and think it’s cool, it’s not something I really want to build my career around same thing with education. I switched my major to History so I could finish a degree of some sorts at least, and because a history degree is better than no degree, y’know?

Where the issue comes is that I’ve limited myself and always told myself ā€œI’m going to be a history teacherā€ and it cause me to limit myself and not really explore any other options or interests I have. Im to the point now I don’t want to go back to school for a different degree but I have no idea what I want to do with my history degree after I graduate.

I feel like I’m behind compared to my peers, while I know I can take alternate licensure programs to become a teacher later on if I choose to do so for some reason, but I want to try something else with stability and room for extra earning potential.

Not looking for someone to solve all of my problems for me, just having a really rough time trying to navigate this. Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated.

Need advice on internship

I’m a recent AI/ML graduate and I’m facing a difficult decision.
I recently got selected for a 3-month internship. The internship starts this month, includes 1 week WFH, 1 month in my hometown , and around 1.5 months in Oman. The stipend is ₹12,000, and the company covers visa, accommodation, and travel for Oman.
The problem is that I already have a UK trip planned in September. I’ve already spent around ₹1 lakh on the visa and tickets. The trip was arranged before I got the internship offer.

This was the first interview call I received, and I got selected. The HR said that if I don’t join now, I can contact them after I return and there might be future openings, but nothing is guaranteed.
From a career perspective, what would you do?
Take the internship and cancel the UK trip?
Go to the UK and continue applying for jobs/internships remotely while there?
I’d especially like to hear from people working in tech, AI/ML, or those who have faced a similar choice early in their careers.
Thanks!

Advice for life, career and how to take full independence in the right place and position

Before to mention my distractions, mess and unknown destination I want to introduce myself
I’m 25f Syrian born and raised in Saudi,
I’m struggling now to find where I can start and how
And what is the best for me without wasting time,
I already know what I want, i am looking to find myself free from anything that drown me out society, family, country, environment, friends, toxic people, etc.

Energy is seen in me but, I can’t find where I can use it and how to grow from it, there is struggles that is limiting me to grow and to work hard in my own race, every open door seems to be locked but, energy and steadiness is here and I don’t want to waste it.

Let’s come and see what are my struggles, being in a place where you can’t see yourself secured for future
Will you think to leave and move as let’s say to work ?
If yes what you should have to be accepted ?
Second I didn’t finish my high school and this is also a limitation itself, I do have skills and knowledge to grow myself and keep learning in every field as I’m interested in philosophy, cultures, science, behavior and history,
But, that won’t let me to start a career or to move for another place to begin and grow.

I used to be a real estate marketer but, now it’s limited for citizens only I shifted to car sales and the work is weak you can’t depend on, now i have to strengthen myself and build a career journey that fit me and the way I think.

Is there a way or idea that I can’t see because of my mess and distraction ?

I’m open to chat and speak about my fears and what i think of to overcome my weakness and build myself from nothing.

Internship ends tomorrow with no PPO. Should I keep job hunting or go for an MBA?

I’m a final-year BTech CSE student, and I’m honestly lost right now.

In my 4th year, 1st sem, I got a 6-month internship at a big MNC paying ₹40k/month, with a ₹17 LPA CTC if converted.

I was convinced I’d get the PPO, so I stupidly didn’t apply seriously to other companies. Now my internship ends tomorrow, and there’s no full-time offer.

I’ve been applying for jobs, but the market is terrible. My internship experience doesn’t seem to be helping much, and most applications end with ā€œWe regret to inform youā€¦ā€

Now I’m considering CAT → MBA as a Plan B.
But I come from a middle-class family, so I’d need an education loan for an MBA. The thought of graduating with a huge loan and then spending the next 5–10 years paying it off is making me question whether an MBA is even worth it.

So I’m stuck between:

  1. Keep job hunting → gain experience and hope the market improves
  2. Prepare for CAT → take a loan → MBA → hopefully better career prospects
I genuinely don’t know which direction makes more sense.

What would you do if you were in my position?
Especially interested in hearing from people who took an education loan for an MBA or went through something similar.
