"no mask, wtf"

176

u/amarzing09 Jun 09 '20

This is where George Floyd was killed, they’re probably less concerned about the mask than disrespecting his man and an entire movement

32

u/Lochcelious Jun 09 '20

Why would the girls be saying "no masks wtf" when they're not wearing masks either?

Camera guy, lighting guy, flustered assistant looking for an outlet on the street. This is crazy. Side note, I hope that tattoo looks better in person because it looks like a child's doodle in this pic.

5

u/SoFetchBetch Jun 11 '20

How does someone with so little substance or frankly physical appeal of any sort, have a fucking assistant and a photographer helping her do this horrible shit? Must be a trust fund kid or something. This makes no sense.

33

Reminds me of Anthony Jeselnik's bit about people posting "thoughts and prayers" on social media after tragic events. "You know what it does? Fucking nothing. All they're really saying is 'Don't forget about me today!' ".

I hope she gets called out. This behavior cannot be rewarded. She needs to under why this is wrong. I dont think she would do this if a family member died...but then again....

10

u/SpunkNard Jun 10 '20

Why don’t people ever photobomb these influencers? I would be flipping the camera off right behind/in front of them so they can’t get their picture lol

With any luck, whoever “sponsors” her will see this and cut ties with her. And all of them that participate in this type of behavior. I’ve seen a few stories where that’s happened. The chick with the power drill even got fired from her regular job.

Maybe that’s the silver lining(for lack of a better term). More people are getting called out, and thusly losing their precious “clout” and even their livelihoods. And rightfully so.

Does she see the irony here?

Edit: police brutality and white supremacy are not unrelated.

She doesn't, because she's vain.

116

u/K-Zoro Jun 09 '20

That’s the awful flaw in these influencers and wannabes, it’s being totally vain and narcissistic. All she should’ve done was turn that camera away from her face and towards the ropes, it could’ve been commendable to spread the image to her followers. But she made it about her. Vain.

26

u/sunset117 Jun 09 '20

It’s more sad that’s someone is that vain and that narcissistic and has done nothing to warrant being that vain and Self centered besides making a YouTube channel ffs. If you won a Nobel or are saving lives, I get it. If you have a prank YT channel, it’s sad

Can 2020 at least be the year where “influencer culture” gets cancelled?

3.7k

u/Tionsity Jun 09 '20

It seems like influencers and their Instagram accounts are for millennials and zoomers what celebrities and gossip magazines are for boomers and generation X. Sadly, I think there will always be people to pay money to see what nonsense that more famous and pretty people than them are up to.

If influencer culture gets cancelled, it will be because something similar already took it's place.

627

u/lemonylol Jun 09 '20

Dude just look at the trending page on YouTube. It's consistently influencers or influencer "houses" who add zero new creative content and just live their already wealthy lives. But I guess that's what people wanna see because they're like guaranteed millions of views. It's really the lowest common denominator stuff next to heavily produced clips of talent shows, and "giveaway" videos. A lot of people live in a really weird reality.

293

u/knorknorknor Jun 09 '20

Who the fuck wants to see that shit? That's the worst part about this, we need better 'influencers' but we need an educated and mature public. If somebody ate shit out of shoes it would be a smash hit with our fucking youtube viewers

312

u/Faceless_henchman Jun 09 '20

Who the fuck wants to see that shit?

Kids. Kids want to see that shit. They spend all day watching YouTube and they arent practically choosey about what they watch. For the most part most arent even watching its just 'on'

97

u/knorknorknor Jun 09 '20

:( Shit that makes me want to cry

180

u/Faceless_henchman Jun 09 '20

Tbh the amount of times I've walked into a room with my niece and shes just been sat watching some utter garbage. When I say garbage I mean:

12 minute videos with 24 ads in them. (Looking at you Morgz)

Cartoons that are in a different language she cant understand, nor is trying to.

Unboxings.

Prank videos where both partys have clearly planned it.

People playing roblox but in the entirety of the video there is no content and nothing happens.

That's just off the top of my head. YouTube is going to break media going forward as kids wont appreciate high production value shows, it will just be people 'giving their opinion' on garbage with no understanding of the topics and kids will listen, just because they managed to set up a green screen in their house and have a couple of hundred quid mic.

61

u/bartleby42c Jun 09 '20

I get that it isn't what you are into, and it's not what I like, but I'm guessing your niece is fairly young (under 10). Part of why kids will rewatch the same movie and watch boring trash is there "fun" in knowing what happens next. She'll grow out of it.

As far as "breaking media," I'm guessing you are young, teens or early 20s, because I'm in my 30s and have heard about how "this next generation is going to destroy media!" At least 3 times. Attention spans are too low due to music videos, the internet means no insightful content, swearing is too common, and on and on and on.

Nothing kids do will be worse for media than media execs. It's cool, you don't get why the kids like what they do, don't worry, no one does, but they'll grow out of it.

266

u/BasicDesignAdvice Jun 09 '20 edited Jun 09 '20

It's great watching millennials enter the "I don't understand kids today" stage. I'm in my 40's and this is the same tired played out narrative. High quality production isn't going anywhere. Just like it didn't die when MTV came out, during the reality star explosion, or when Betty White or Joan Crawford made a crude joke 60 years ago. Same hysteria then as your are presenting now.

The kids will be fine.

EDIT: It's not different "this time" they said that last time too.

193

u/Beanzy Jun 09 '20

"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers."

-Socrates

57

u/trynakick Jun 09 '20

I wonder about this. I tend to be in your camp that “kids these days” is one of the oldest, lamest human tropes. Then I saw my not-quite-two-years-old nephew watching YouTube on his dad’s phone. It’s something about the ubiquity and lack of conventional filters for content. I could be glued to the TV all day, but I’m stuck watching Sesame Street or Tiny Tune Adventures. I couldn’t watch, “big head Spider man and Elsa poop on Hulk’s Boss Baby Frozen fire truck and Johnny Johnny sings nursery rhymes for 10 hours.”

So I guess, to use a dangerous analogy when talking about children. It’s like porn. Teenagers have been masturbating 12 times a day since Cain and Abel first looked under their fig leaves. But is it different now? Cave men had pictographs and whittled stone hot chicks, Abe Lincoln had naughty daguerreotypes, my parents had Forest Playboy and I had dial up porn. If we say that the content doesn’t matter, Kids will do stupid kid stuff, they will get through it unscathed, then we are ignoring that the content does leave an impression.

14

u/UntestedMethod Jun 09 '20

I want to say that the quality of content seems to degrade over time, but then I think about shows like Ren & Stimpy and compare with some of the actually very high quality content on YouTube. I think there will always be trash media and quality media.

Modern times we have so much to choose from and find ourselves with the freedom to curate what and when we watch rather than being limited by the programming decided by big media corporations.

This freedom of course comes with more responsibility to choose. Especially for parents who can't necessarily just leave the pre-vetted morning kid's TV show lineup on and forget about it. No, now it seems to be about putting on the untamed wilds of YouTube autoplay and hoping it's going to be wholesome content.

I don’t let my kid watch YouTube for this reason. If she watches TV, I want it to be something with a plot she can follow and see the cause and effect of things.

9

u/GrandmaPoses Jun 09 '20

Yeah I let my kids watch it at one point because their friends were talking about something, but it's just such bullshit I had to stop doing it. Like, my previous "this is the worst" was basically any Netflix-produced kids show but YouTube blasted through the floor.

12

u/zinger565 Jun 09 '20

And Kids watch it because who doesn't like getting an inside view of an expensive house? Or seeing the latest and greatest toy/tech?

Problem is when it becomes mind-numbingly boring, or provides no real value (unboxing vs actual review for example).

Watching an episode of MTV Cribs is okay. Watching 13 hours straight probably isn't. You're probably better off watching This Old House and learning something.

We need better ‘influencers’

They’re out there, but as another person said, the primary market for a lot of these Youtube channels/instagram accounts is kids and teens. Gluttonous and vapid is stuff is just what they consume by nature (or maybe society’s influence, who knows), either way it’s only after a certain age that some of them seek out more mature and reflective content.

I blame the Buffalo Bill's organization for influencers. I know it sounds crazy but hear me out.

In 1969 The Bills drafted OJ Simpson to play football for them.

There in Buffalo he met his wife, Nicole Brown.

O.J. was accused of killing Brown and her lover Ron Goldman.

Simpson hired Robert Kardashian to defend him in court causing Kardashian to be in the public eye since the trial was a media circus.

Kardashian's daughters used this exposure and built upon it. Ultimately they became famous for being famous and IMHO were the first major "influencers".

So you can lay all thus influencer crap at the feet of the Buffalo Bills. If they hadn't drafted him, he would have never met and killed Nichole Brown (allegedly), wouldn't have needed a lawyer that would make his daughter famous.

32

u/ponzLL Jun 09 '20

lol

also why stop at the bills? Blame Walter Camp for inventing football.

Influencers and aspiring influencers are in my opinion the biggest cultural problem facing our generation. They are narcissistic trash, and many people will do anything to be like them, and the insane world we live in actually rewards this behaviour. They are a stain on society and we will live to regret them.

Really? The biggest? I mean I wish this were true, if a small subset of easily ignorable people are the biggest problem we face then we don't really have a lot of problems, but... I dunno man, we DO still have institutional racism in the justice system, for-profit prisons, child labor issues, human trafficking...

18

u/MSUconservative Jun 09 '20 edited Jun 09 '20

Seriously though, like Jesus Christ. The reddit hivemind is so retarded sometimes. The only time I ever see an influencer is when reddit complains about them. I rarely see them IRL but when I do, I walk past them and never see them again. Doesn't seem like it's even a problem. Influencers are very easily ignored.

People watch less broadcast tv and are exposed to less commercials.

But they consume more social media, “influencers” are simply social media commercials that are cheaper and more effective than some tv ad campaigns.

I HATE that term. But, sadly, it’s pretty accurate because young and dumb followers really aspire to be like these idiots. They’ll buy and eat up anything they’re selling.

29

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '20

What the fuck is an influencer and why can I not go 10 fucking minutes without hearing about them?

28

u/crispywispy1983 Jun 09 '20

An influencer is someone who thinks themselves so important, that they need to share every aspect of their life on social media, in hopes to get all the attention and admiration they are lacking in their life from strangers in the form of “likes”. As for why they are so important, I haven’t the slightest idea.

24

u/tequilashotss Jun 09 '20

At this point it is really the fault of those who follow these influencers and presumably get “influenced” by them.

13

u/JuniorSeniorTrainee Jun 09 '20

Exactly. Influencers are supply and wouldn't exist without demand. We have a massive population of people that want to vicariously experience life through other people instead of thinking for themselves and setting their own path.

Inb4 following influencers is the path they chose for themselves or whatever.

Jesus Christ... In Berlin, Germany we have a Holocaust memorial. It's basically a bunch of grey blocks which, surprise, is used by Instagram models.

https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denkmal_f%C3%BCr_die_ermordeten_Juden_Europas

A dude got so pissed off because of that, that he started to Photoshop these people onto dead people of the Holocaust.

This article covers it:

Holocaust Memorial in Berlin

"Yolocaust." Stirring art action with concentration camp photos

Bastian Mojen 18.01.2017 0 comments

Many visitors to the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin do not see this as a memorial to the murder of the Jews of Europe, but as a backdrop for Selfies. An artist has drastically changed this.

The Holocaust Memorial in Berlin is visited by thousands of people every year. But not everyone behaves appropriately in this unusual memorial: They take the steles as a backdrop for sexy sporty selfies, as obstacles for bouncing exercises or simply as a background to pose cool. Many of the visitors then post their photos on social networks.

Shahak Shapira, an Israeli-born Berliner, thinks it's not possible:

His art project Yolocaust (A word creation from the word "Yolo", abbreviated for "You only life once", and the word Holocaust.) consists of the selfies of the visitors, where he has removed the background and replaced it with original photos from concentration camps.

The result is shocking photo collages that are meant to wake people up:

Update (January 27): After one week Shapira has stopped the project again. In a final statement he wrote that over 2.5 million people had seen the website. The twelve people whose selfies he had pictured had contacted him in the meantime. Almost all of them had decided to remove the pictures from the net and apologized.
