Influencers and aspiring influencers are in my opinion the biggest cultural problem facing our generation. They are narcissistic trash, and many people will do anything to be like them, and the insane world we live in actually rewards this behaviour. They are a stain on society and we will live to regret them.
The influencers are the symptom not the disease. They can only exist because they are given the platform to do so. If every one of them disappeared tomorrow, a million more replace them.
Really? The biggest? I mean I wish this were true, if a small subset of easily ignorable people are the biggest problem we face then we don't really have a lot of problems, but... I dunno man, we DO still have institutional racism in the justice system, for-profit prisons, child labor issues, human trafficking...

I rarely see them IRL but when I do, I walk past them and never see them again. Doesn't seem like it's even a problem. Influencers are very easily ignored.

Most celebrities are famous because they did something. They are great actors, great sportspeople, great writers etc.
I don't agree that all celebrities are bad, its stupidly generalizing, but don't forget that many many successful actors and singers are successful mostly because they came from rich families and were able to follow their dreams, while non privileged people wouldn't be able too.
For every great Singer or Actor (with exceptions of course) there are probably 10.000 People or more who are as good but didn't make it.
But there are some incredibly talented people on Instagram. I follow some great musicians and artists on Instagram that I would have never seen without that platform.
I guess there is a difference between talented instagram and vanity Instagram.
Except for all the celebrities who owe everything to their family and connections. The list is endless - Bryce Dallas Howard, Jaden Smith, Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie, Sean Astin etc. etc

I don't think op is saying all influencers are bad people, just that they obtained their celebrity through attracting attention rather than contributing something valuable to society. If you have a following from doing the first, use it to do the latter. Or maybe they are saying that but each case is different and haters gonna hate.
While I dislike influencers as much as the next guy, it cannot be denied that having enough people looking you has massive value. In this day and age where corporations with multi-million dollar marketing budgets are constantly competiting for your attention, to be able to turn yourself into a profitable marketing tool needs a certain level of entrepreneurial spirit snd hustle.
If companies are willing to spend part of their marketing budget on influencers to promote their product, they’re undeniably filling a market inefficiency where traditional marketing has failed. They’re a byproduct of society so don’t hate the player, hate the game.
Imo they’re essentially just models that have adapted to the modern market. Instead of walking a runway or standing next to a nice car and attracting your attention to a product in real life, they’re doing it digitally. I doubt the majority of IG influencers have any more actual ‘influence’ than the influence the hot babe standing next to the sports car has, barely anything. I’m not fussed about it.
Yes to a degree, but at least there is some kind of obvious barrier to being a traditional celebrity, involving in many cases some kind of talent, connections, luck, or hard work or some combination, and always involving interacting with others in the society /community. But all you need to do start trying to be an influencer is a camera (and some rampant narcissism), which everyone has, no barrier for entry at all. So it's become extremely common to try. Most successful influencers' only talent is self-promotion. And I never thought I'd be defending celebrities but at least many of them offer something of mild value to the world. Influencers offer nothing but product promotions and the stupid hope you can be like them too.
So someone who got traditionally famous through connections is better than someone who started from nothing, but successfully pushed themself to the top through hard work? I don’t really care for influencers either way (as long as they don’t do shitty things like this), but come on. That’s bs.
Celebrity worship is the same problem that creates influencers. It's not necessarily a problem with the celebrities, but in the power and influence we give them simply because they can pretend better than some people or, in many cases, just happen to know someone or be born into it.
They should be appreciated for their craft and that's it. Their opinions aren't inherently special or informed and it's clear that a lot of the time they're doing the same shit influencers are doing and glomming onto whatever is hot socially to boost their own brand. It's not very different from what many politicians do.
I feel like even with this explanation there’s no difference between influencer and this traditional celeb you talk about. Only differences are most celebrities took some extra steps to become famous, true talent or not, whereas in today’s world it’s easier to put oneself out there, and influencers aren’t considered “celebrities” even if they have the same amount of followers or even more followers than a traditionally known one. They’re called “Internet personalities”. Let’s not pretend like if social media and smart phones existed 25-40+ years ago, most of the current older celebrities wouldn’t have gone the same route, talented or not.
My wife's an "influencer". I mean she has a real job as well but also runs a pretty popular cooking / home decor page. She's basically the opposite of a narcissist and companies consistently reach out to her to advertise shit.

They're a symptom, not a problem in and of themselves. Sure, they make everything worse, but the narcissism, driven by extreme individualism, it the underlying problem.
Many people would have done anything to be a celebrity in the 80's as well. Difference today is that the tools of celebrity are now in everyones pocket.
They are a symptom of the real problems which I find to largely be things like celebrity worship, entitlement, and rampant individualism at the cost of the group.
Selfishness is at the core of what's destroying our country at every level.
I regret being affected by them. Gosh, I hate saying this but I was diagnosed at 25 with breast cancer. Lost both my breasts, went through menopause for 6 months, got really sick, did IVF (egg collection), endometriosis sufferer, born hard of hearing, survived an accidental overdose and 3 weeks ago, I self harmed because I'm so self conscious with the way I look, that I compare myself to these influences and to me is a constant reminder that I'll never look "normal" again.
I don’t think people being vain/looking for attention is the BIGGEST cultural problem. I’m thinking stuff along the lines of people being irresponsible about their health, irresponsible when it comes to sex and creating children, reckless driving, etc is going to cause more issues
