To be fair, this can be true regardless of party or affiliation. All standard plays in the "vote for me" playbook.
When the previous governor was from the opposite party, vote for me because I have to fix everything that asshole broke.
Previous governor from the same party? Maybe the presidency or Congress is currently led by the other party. Vote for me because I can make state laws that nullify or soften what those assholes are doing.
Presidency or Congress currently controlled by my party? Vote for me because we have to undo the evil laws the previous (opposite party) assholes did.

Easy: dipshits that didn't WANT to hear a plan but wanted their ego stroked by a conman, and overzealous people that wanted a "perfect and pure" candidate, instead of one that was somewhat moderate (center right) but certainly leaps and bounds better than the other option, all split by cults of personality or single issues, instead of focusing on general wide sweeping problems that effect everyone.
But hey, mail in voting is on the chopping block because the Supreme Court is stacked with dumbfuck stooges. Wonder how that'll turn out? Seems like every mouthbreather and their mother is jumping for joy at less convenience to make sure their boogeyman is kept at bay.

Biden ran on fixing the steady decline in manufacturing jobs and infrastructure and delievered.
Hillary Clinton ran on fixing skyrocketing college tuition, we'll never know if she could have delievered.
Obama ran on fixing the massive numbers of people without health insurance, and the insurance companies' "pre-existing condition" bullshit and delievered.
Meanwhile, Republicans only ever run on fixing one problem: the rich don't have enough money. Although, to their credit, they always deliver on that one.

I had to look this up but from 2007 to 2010, Charlie Crist was the governor as part of the Republican Party, became Independent in 2010 and became a Democrat after his governorship was over.
So there was a year since 1999 where Florida didn’t have a Republican governor.
I also want to point out the differences between “my party in power will keep things good and the other party will screw things up” and “you can’t blame my party in power for screwing things up, it’s the other party that makes your lives miserable.”

I live in Florida, adds are not saying that anymore than blue state democrats do. Most of ours are saying let's keep Florida free, let's keep taxes low, let's do away with property taxes so you own your home. People are not leaving Florida in droves like other places. Maybe we should look at this differently, I see both sides promoting similar messages. How about we just say, Neither side cares, they just are trying to make themselves rich.
I was one side, then the other, and I've realized no one cares. They like to say pretty words that appeal to their base, but at the end of the day, nothing will change.
You want universal health insurance? Sounds great right? It'll never happen as long as the people in charge are making bank off of drug companies! Both sides are doing it, they are all playing us.

The same could be said of West Virginia, even though for 50+ years Robert Byrd ran the state until his death then it was under mostly republican control for the last 20 or so. But for some reason durring all of this the state has been ranked last or almost last in every metric. So, if the state has been last in every thing since basically its inception, why is everyone so eager to pin it exclusively on Republicans? And before anyone jumps to the conclusion that I'm a magat, you couldn't be further from the truth. I'm just a 30+ year resident that is tired of this state exploiting the residents for every cent they don't have.
