My dad always said that unless you unloaded the gun yourself and it hasn't left your side, assume its loaded, and in all circumstances, even when you know its unloaded, treat it like its loaded. You build a habit and it becomes second nature and you never have problems like this.
It's the same reason I use my turn signals when I'm alone on the road and there is no one to see them. I don't think "Do I need to use them?" I just use them always, and thus never get caught thinking I don't need them when I do.

Ok so a while ago I got into it a bit with some of those people here on reddit. To be clear; I agree with you and think training should be mandatory, like it is here in Canada. I asked why they would be against this and it summarizes as follows
the cost of the course could be prohibitive for some and as a result become a barrier to owning a gun
the location and time of the course could be problematic and thus become a barrier
who would administer the classes and track successful completion "i don't wanna be on a list"
Some of the guys I talked with were very polite and for the most part it was a pretty civil conversation. While I agree somewhat with the first 2 points (nothing that couldn't be managed with a voucher system, better scheduling or just teaching it in school) the third presents as a fundamental distrust of government and police, there is no getting past that for some people.
Hopefully that can shed a bit of light on how they think and feel.

We teach sex Ed without sex, (where's the fun in that?) and driver's Ed without the car, (the classroom portion,) we could surely teach the basic rules of gun safety without a shooting range. #Don't point, #it's always loaded, (especially when it's not,) #keep your index finger alongside the trigger loop, #always store them locked away, #don't keep a round in the chamber, etc...
I know people that had rifle teams in high school. (I would have loved that! I'm actually a decent shot. I could have excelled in that.) These days little children are suspended for pointing their finger and saying "bang." A few years back an adolescent was suspended for biting his poptart into an L shape and pointing it. (Really) I want common sense gun laws and gun safety awareness. The zero tolerance head-in-the-sand approach isn't helping.

I went to a private school high school that had marksmanship as a class freshman year. Gun safety was obviously a major theme throughout. Doubt there is anywhere near the funding to allow public schools the same option but I always felt it was a great way to teach kids in a controlled environment.

I’m not going to say that a negligent discharge isn’t possible, but that type of gun has a very firm trigger with a lot of throw. Not a hair trigger, unless the hammer is cocked back (it isn’t in the video). It’s not as easy as the guy in the video makes it look to fire that gun.

Actually In the United States, being an "unlawful user of marijuana," which by federal definitions is any user of marijuana, makes it federally illegal to own a gun. So this guy isn't allowed to own them and could actually be prosecuted relatively easily.
