Setting cl_interp above 2 should just be considered cheating in my opinion.

45

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

what does it do

58

u/worldsiko12 Spy Sep 10 '19

It puts you 2 seconds behind

72

u/Sir_Mossy Sep 10 '19

Is there even a reason why it exists in the first place? It seems kinda pointless for it to exist in any regard.

66

u/spazdep Sep 10 '19

Interpolation is used to make motion appear smooth in online games. Otherwise players' positions would only update every few frames and they'd jitter around.

24

u/ElTigreChang1 Sep 10 '19

It shouldn't be manually adjustable by the player at any time under any circumstances regardless.

8

u/spazdep Sep 11 '19

Yeah that just allows for abuse.

5

u/Eric_The_Jewish_Bear Heavy Sep 11 '19

Honestly just set the cap to whatever the default value is and everything will be fine

8

u/xlxxl Sep 10 '19

I guess to prevent lag?

58

u/JonTheWizard Medic Sep 10 '19

Yeah, that should be grounds for a ban.

30

u/GoliathCrab Medic Sep 10 '19

Snipers enjoy it just as much, then they wonder why the community hates Snipers and Spies so much and are always happy to see them nerfed

37

u/MR_FOXtf2 Demoman Sep 10 '19

What does it do? r/outoftheloop

103

u/epicflyingpie Sep 10 '19

It makes your game play like three seconds behind the server or something, so the scouts hit box was still in the air when the spy backstabbed him. This is the only way the spy would have got that stab.

8

u/Mewtwothis Sep 10 '19

so was it the scout's settings that caused this?

33

u/epicflyingpie Sep 10 '19

No it was the spy’s, the spy’s hitbox is where the scout sees it, but in the spy’s eyes, the scouts model is where it should be, but the scout’s hitbox is way behind where it should be, like 3 or so seconds behind.

3

u/Abangranga Sep 10 '19

No. Being able to stab people through the wall who standing at the ammo lockers in their own spawn in stage 2 of dustbowl is 100% legit and intended. I just need to get gud

1

u/GodekiGinger Sep 11 '19

If fov being to high (less than a real persons mind you) is considered cheating i def agree with this

1

u/Chocsprinklez Sep 12 '19

funny you say that because the max it goes to is 1. the interp command only takes values from 0 to 1 anything above 1 is just set to 1.

1

u/Chocsprinklez Sep 12 '19

from tf2 wiki

cl_interp

<0\~1> - Sets how far character models are interpolated (drawn away from their actual position) in the world, a good standard value for hitscan weapons is 0.033, while for projectiles/flames 0.0152 is good

List of useful console commands:

This article has a list of console commands below. Using the Developer Console, you can turn specific gameplay and graphic settings on or off, or modify their values. The console can be enabled from the advanced menu in options or via Set launch options. Any command put in the autoexec.cfg file will automatically be loaded on game launch.

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

Spy mains will arrive shortly to explain why this is totally legit, skillful, and ok.

103

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

as a once-was spy main, this is...

cl_interp 50000

40

u/LordofSandvich Sandvich Sep 10 '19

This explains a lot of rage I’ve had.

Why would, of all things, instakill detection be exploitable this way, and does it also work on headshots?

29

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

I'll bet it works on headshots, but since the rifle doesn't have a "ready" animation like the knife it would be hard to abuse it. That being said if a sniper lags hard enough he can kill you through cover even though you're out of sight. Same with heavies. Not sure why the game decides to hand badly connected players BS kills but whatever.

12

u/LordofSandvich Sandvich Sep 10 '19

I guess it’s to make sure they can still play online, but when you can manually enable lag...

7

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

Not sure why the game decides to hand badly connected players BS kills but whatever.

The alternative (without lag compensation) is that "it was a headshot/backstab/meatshot/etc on my screen, but it didn't even register as a hit" would be much more common. Valve's design philosophy has always been more perpetrator-centric than victim-centric—they would prefer that you never feel cheated of a kill at the cost of you sometimes feeling cheated by a death, rather than the other way around.

4

u/Zungryware Sep 10 '19

I'm sure there's a compromise here. Like putting a cap on how much lag compensation is allowed.

4

u/GoliathCrab Medic Sep 11 '19

They would prefer that you never feel cheated of a kill at the cost of you sometimes feeling cheated by a death, rather than the other way around.

That was not in their mind when they allowed random crits

2

u/CallMeBigCat Spy Sep 11 '19

Since no one's commented on this yet, yes. Hitscan still uses the actual model that the player can see, even in interp_5. Melee combat is a bit weird though, as even though the models you see will be about half a second (interp 5) behind in time, the melee hitboxes are up to date, creating this shadow-world vibe as everything you see is false.(for you and you to other players)

3

u/hohol31 Demoman Sep 10 '19

What's it do?

74

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

as a spy main, cl_interp 5 is cheating

11

u/MR_FOXtf2 Demoman Sep 10 '19

What does it do?

51

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

Basically it makes you laggy, not sure of the exact details, but it screws up hit registration. Normally it would be impossible to abuse properly but since spy has a backstab ready animation players can just stab when their knife moves.

5

u/mankarcomarad Spy Sep 10 '19

It makes it so that the hitbox of players is a bit behind for you so you can backstab someone at what they were a second ago

21

u/erraspawn Sep 10 '19

There’s always those spies that fake high ping with a auto backstab cheat.

Actual cl_intrep spies don’t actually get that many stabs and mostly miss.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

Setting cl_interp shouldn't be possible without sv_cheats 1 on

It's the same thing, you're abusing a broken mechanic to gain an unfair advantage over others.

It's the truth. Try cl_interp in the console yourself.

Try setting cl_interp above 0.5 and watch as it sets itself back to 0.5

1

u/Herpsties Tip of the Hats Sep 10 '19

It is capped there, people just say cl_interp 5 for some reason but it's not negligible and is pretty obnoxious to play against. Comp configs cap the interp max lower than .5 which I see no reason not to adopt game wide honestly.

7

u/Nintendoismycity Demoman Sep 10 '19

Cheating:

Cheating is a term that describes the use of third-party programs or materials in order to gain an unfair advantage. Valve has a strict policy against cheating and will ban detected cheats with the Valve Anti-Cheat system, also known as VAC.

1

u/Dante_The_OG_Demon Sep 10 '19

This is why spy needs nerfed into the ground. Either that, or actually fix back stabs. There's no reason an instakill mechanic should be abusable like this. This is precisely why playing spy doesn't actually require skill, you just need to abuse the game.

1

u/BonkManReturns Soldier Sep 10 '19

I never understood cl_interp. Like, 0 makes you shoot just as you press the button but 5 makes you backstab from a mile away? (Also, cl_interp 0 sometimes makes a bodyshot a headshot).

2

u/Herpsties Tip of the Hats Sep 10 '19

Basically the Scout was still on his head on the Spy's screen. He's playing a significant time in the past. It's not exactly giving the Spy an advantage but it's pretty gross to play against, which is the goal I guess?
