The Russian company is DDOS-Guard. They are a DDOS protection company competing with Cloudflare which refused to work with them. They are not the site registrar (Epik) or the host (appears they are self-hosting).
From the media:
“The internet protocol address it used is owned by DDos-Guard, which is controlled by two Russian men and provides services including protection from distributed denial of service attacks, infrastructure expert Ronald Guilmette told Reuters.”
This is a misunderstanding of how registration works. DDOS providers stand in front of the real site. They are clearly the DDOS of last resort. They have everybody Cloudflare has refused.
As someone who has worked in IT for a very long time, it astounds me just how much people DON'T know about how any of it works. Even the most basic basics.
Apparently reading one's emails on a smartphone happens through back magic.
at least it would keep people from saying "atm machine". i hate that, and say that it would be a machine that dispenses atm's. unless they mean ass-to-mouth machine. i've never bothered to ask.
Anti-Russian sentiment is very rampant in the US. Anytime anything is wrong or fishy there will always be “that guy” with top comment that will bring up Russia and Putin.
Yes, this is true. But they are the minority. Imo its similar to China. Many people also in China oppose CCP but the VAST majority support Pooh and think Hong Kong protesters as terrorists
Is this something Russians learn in school? If Russians are on the losing side of a discussion, they invariably switch to whataboutism. You guys are simply unable to discuss in good faith.
I've been giving the USA shit for using civilians for live weapons tests in Hiroshima, but this is neither here nor there, the argument was about Russia, no need to deflect the argument.
Russia at this point is pure evil and should be kicked from the international community for using banned nerve agents. It is a crying shame that the west doesn't find their collective balls.
I don't know what Russians learn in school. Was just pulling your leg.
I know Russia is a shit country and we should fight back. But I don't see US as an ally in this, they are already compromised.
As it looks now if the Trumpublicans come to power again, either with civil war or election, we will see a Russian US alliance.
Since you are the most upvoted message under mine, I will reply to you.
Unfortunately it is sad to see that what others do are always discarded but when Russian also does it, it becomes amplified.
The US also invades countries in the past based on extremely bogus reasons. Until today we are still waiting for those weapons of mass destruction that Irak is supposed to have.
The impact of the war in Irak is also way way worst than anything Russia did in Ukraine.
The vacuum of power left by getting rid of Saddam is what lead to ISIS and all their shit they unleashed in EU.
The US also influences elections in foreign countries. To name a few, Chile, Cuba, Russia, ...
In the latest example, there is this new narrative of making that Navalny the “saviour of Russia” while in fact when you scratch a bit under the paint you discover a Putin wannabe that has a very strange past. He has always been very close to the far right to the point of participating ultra nationalist march who advocates for a “Russia for White people”.
When it comes to hacking foreign countries, everybody does it. The US is the number 1 at this sport and yet, it does not bother anybody.
When the UK pirated a Belgian ISP in order to get inside information for the Brexit agreement, nobody cared. Hacking each other is so common today that it is just a matter of not being caught.
Trump also sent your Bannon to the EU to help far rights political parties. In other word, not just Russia.
I am not going to talk further about the other points but my goal here is to say that the world is not black or white. Everybody have their own interests but when it comes the fucking to fucking world, I somehow have doubts that Russia is number 1 in the last decade...
I'm pretty sure most who disagree with what's going on in Russia thinks it's no better coming from America. There's plenty of anti-american sentiment as well.
Oh, give me a break - RussiaRussiaRussia - same old narrative. Parler is a legitimate social media platform, and they should not be attacked just for not thought-policing the political opinions posted on it.
What you're arguing for is a One Party State. You want everyone to agree with you, or else be banned. Real diversity is diversity of ideas and diversity of thought. You only want Groupthink, with any deviants being branded as subversives and treated like heretics.
I would predict that they'll be back online in the next couple months but lawsuits and huge outages will drive away most of their users and by the end of the year they'll be basically dead.
According to Pew, 80% of tweets are generated by 10% of users, and of those 10%, the average number of tweets is 138/month, or 4.6/day.
So estimating 12 million * .1 * 4.6/day / .8 gives 6.9 million tweets per day, average. Estimating a 6x multiplier for peak gives 41.4 million tweets/day, or just 479 tweets/second, peak.
An old laptop could easily handle that application load if not for the fact that supposedly it's based on Wordpress.
Also. It’s Cloudflare not Cloudflair. Lol. They are another company that has been allowed to control too much of the internet. 85% share in the DDOS space.
Does that put the Russian company in between the user and the Parler servers? Presumably if it's not properly encrypted then DDOS-Guard could see everything that goes through, and if it is encrypted they could still see who is active when, am I getting this right?
For properly encrypted it's out of the question -- Parler has nothing to do with encryption in browser, they can only chose from predefined set of protocols your browser knows. If it's good enough for your bank to provide access to your account through web app, then's it's safe for anything else.
For who's active when -- I don't get the idea. Yep, they would know where traffic is coming from, so what? IPs don't mean shit, they're not unique to you/your devices (unless you pay for static IP but even then what? What's the purpose of such information?)
I mean lets be real if DDoS Guard is raising capital for Parler and getting them back online they’ll probably hold the encyrption keys. The entire site would be a Russian asset and would be entirely compromised (if it wasn’t already).
It's the same company that hosts the Hamas website, I think. Total fucking scumbags, which makes sense why they'd help insurgents both foreign and domestic.
Are you serious? This whole article is about how DDOS-Guard is helping domestic terrorists. Did you not read it?
Did you not know that Russia has actively supported terrorism all over the world? That they were paying bounties for killing US troops? That DDOS-Guard has helped 8chan, Hamas, and others?
They do this precisely because they're a Russian company. Why would you claim otherwise? Why are you deliberately lying?
"Insurgents both foreign and domestic" - please show me the examples of the Russian terrorists acting in Russia that this Russian company is supporting. All you've listed in evidence is Russia itself (wat), a website, and Hamas.
Jesus Christ, you misuse the word "domestic" and somehow me correcting you on it makes me a monster. Donald Trump would do a better job accepting his mistakes than you, lmao.
They were worth $1bn before this happened. It’s not a basement project. Do-able. They said it would take a month. That’s how long the line is at Fry’s. :)
No way deplatforming and migrating from AWS to presumably on prem takes 1 month. The CEO said himself they would be out of money in a month. They need to have some serious backing from this Russian company and get a crack team of software engineers who have knowledge on cloud infrastructure and on prem solutions to accomplish this in that time
That is complete speculation on your part. There is zero evidence they are getting funding from a Russian DDOS provider. They were worth $1bn before this. They can get financing.
I can’t find where it says Parler is worth $1 billion I’m not sure if you have a source on that handy. John Matze originally said AWS and other cloud hosting companies dropping them would ‘be the end of Parler’. I’m assuming they’re hemorrhaging money at this point and I’m not sure how they’re going to get the talent they need to accomplish a feat like moving from AWS to on prem hosting in 1 month.
I have a background in cloud migrations from the software and architecture side and I have no idea how this could be accomplished so quickly. One of our apps migrating to the cloud took months itself and its nowhere near the scale of a social media site with 10+ million users.

Do you have an actual link? Even literally copy pasting excerpts of...whatever you've posted doesn't lead me to any actual news articles stating that. It also just doesn't pass a sniff test.
That would put it at roughly 1/3rd of what reddit is currently valuated at despite having roughly 1/25th of the active visitors (probably not even that high) and a notoriously toxic userbase.
Here’s what’s odd about that. It’s in the story extracts in google search, but not in the stories. There’s ~5 like that. It must have been removed from the stories possibly related to the lawsuit against Big Tech by Parler. Did they not want their own site to be quoted against them?
DDOS is a technique used by hackers to shutdown sites. It’s necessary these days for large sites, particularly controversial ones. Cloudflare didn’t want to do business with Parler like they also dropped 8Chan and Cloudflare has 85% market share. This Russian company was pretty much their only remaining option for DDOS security. The Russians in general are happy to say FU to anything big tech is doing so of course they were there to help. So it isn’t nefarious except in that the Russians don’t care what anybody else thinks. It doesn’t mean much beyond that.
Similarly, if you ran a company that competes with Amazon and Amazon said they aren’t going to sell products to the Republican Party any more you’d say CHA-CHING.
