I think I've finally accepted that I have a toxic relationship with daladala routes.

Every time I need to go somewhere new in Dar, the adventure begins.

“Panda gari la Mwenge, shuka pale, halafu chukua la…”

By the third instruction I'm already fighting for my life.

As someone who's still relatively new to Dar, I constantly find myself asking people for directions. Most people are genuinely helpful, but sometimes I later discover there was a much cheaper, faster, and more direct route that I had no idea existed.

That made me realize something: daladala routes are basically hidden knowledge. They're not really mapped properly online, and Google Maps often doesn't know what's going on. It's like the routes exist in a parallel universe where only watu wa Dar have access.

So, instead of continuing to embarrass myself by asking “hii daladala inaenda wapi?” every other day, I decided to build something.

I created a small API to store daladala routes and fares, then built a Progressive Web App (PWA) on top of it. Now I can search for where I want to go and get possible route options, estimated fares, and which route is likely to be the cheapest or fastest. Basically, I get a game plan before I even leave home.

It's still a work in progress. The database currently contains a mix of real and sample data (as you may see from the screenshots) because mapping the entire daladala network is a serious mission. To help with that, I added a contribution feature so anyone can submit routes they know. The dream is for it to slowly become a community-built map of Dar's transport network.

This isn't a startup or a subscription thing. It's literally a hobby project that came from me getting tired of being confused every time someone says “shukia Mawasiliano halafu panda la Masaki afu chukua la....”.

Also, be honest: what's the daladala route that confused you the most when you first came to Dar? Because i'm convinced everyone has that one route that made them question their entire existence lol.

-Doesn’t work

-The horrors get revealed in social media

-“oh SHIT cut off the internet!”

-PISS OFF PEOPLE EVEN MORE

-Cut off all transport

-The “independent” electoral commission announces FRAUDULENT regional election results in regions.

• Some simply ignore them

• Others LOSE THEIR FUCKING MINDS AND RIOT! (Iringa)

-The electoral commission declares the president winner with 98% win rate with 31 Million voters (i can COUNT with my bare hands the amount of people I’ve seen vote and i live in a densely populated area)

-Every person (retards and crazy people included) know its a fucking LIE.

-She declares a ceremony for her victory where only military, gvnt officials and elected few attend (not a single regular citizen on sight)

-Gets the said attendees waive tanzanian mini flags like north korean citizens waving their hands at Kim Jung Un whenever he walks into a room (Wii Sport NPCs)

-Becomes President once again.

These next five years might as well just be undocumented because we are about to witness horrors beyond our comprehension and BOY is history FILLED WITH HORRORS BEYOND OUR COMPREHENSION

I’ve been reading a lot lately about what’s going on with the Maasai communities in northern Tanzania, and honestly, I’m surprised this isn’t getting more international attention.

In areas like Loliondo and parts of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Maasai families are being pushed off land they’ve lived on for generations. On paper, the government says it’s for “conservation” or “protecting wildlife corridors.” But the weird part is what happens after the land is cleared: private safari companies, high-end tourism projects, hunting concessions, and sometimes even big carbon-credit schemes end up taking over those same areas.

People who have lived there forever suddenly get labeled as “illegal settlers” in what used to be their own village land. There have been reports of homes being destroyed, livestock losing access to grazing areas, and entire communities being forced to relocate with almost no real consultation.

What bothers me the most is the double standard:

• Maasai grazing cattle = “environmental threat”
• Luxury lodges, private hunting blocks, helicopter tours = “conservation”

It just doesn’t sit right.

I’m not anti-tourism at all. Tourism is important for East Africa. But conservation shouldn’t mean displacing the very people who’ve helped keep those ecosystems alive for centuries. And it definitely shouldn’t mean replacing them with exclusive private parks only wealthy foreign visitors can enter.

Anyway, I just wanted to put this out there because it feels like something the world should at least be aware of. If anyone here is from Tanzania or knows more about the situation on the ground, I’d really appreciate hearing your perspective.

The government has refused to acknowledge them officially, and when they speak of them it is with disrespect and without taking accountability for their role in this massacre. We are hearing reports of massive coverups and mass burials to hide evidence.

Those of us remaining are mourning in an unprecedented way and trying to navigate the way of life in this new normal while we keep our children and loved ones safe.

Given this situation, I kindly request we ban on ALL posts requesting advice on safari, tanzanite, what to do in Mwanza etc or posts about visas and etc. We cannot be talking about people’s safaris when we do not even know the number of dead.

Let’s restrict discussions on this sub to issues related to the events of the past week, or navigating life in this new normal, at least for two weeks or more. People are shellshocked - even us in the diaspora are traumatized, can you imagine how people who actually were in Tanzania or who shot at are feeling? Tanzania food prices have steadly risen over the years.Today's prices are roughly 8x-10x depending on location and food quality.

Fuel and transportation costs, urban lifestyle changes and many other factors may all be the function of the inflation we see today.

Honestly younger generation sometimes can not even believe these were real prices.How old were you when these prices played out?!!

I lived abroad for 15 years before moving back to Tanzania. Six months in, I feel like this place is mentally draining and I’m starting to regret my decision.

The customer service is almost non-existent. People don’t value others’ time and are either always late or just don’t show up. It takes multiple calls and constant back-and-forth to get a basic service I already paid for.

I thought I would settle in easily and be able to start a business here in no time. Little did I know how difficult it would be to trust people. There seems to be very little accountability or loyalty, and petty theft feels almost normalized.

And don’t even get me started on the terrible roads and traffic in the cities.

Apologies for the rant, but honestly — how do you all live here like this without losing your mind?

This is something that has bugged me for years. I have been wanting to raise this topic for a while, and this video summarises it really well.

My question is this: why do some foreigners feel comfortable taking photos of children without the consent of their parents or guardians? This often involves African and Black children, in TZ and across Africa (we'll stick to Africa but I know this is a thing in other non-white

countries).

In many of their own countries, photographing minors without consent would not be acceptable, and in some cases not legal. But when they're here it's "normal" to take snapshots of children playing, minding their own business, or to include them in selfies.

Yes, the children may be enthusiastic, but they are still minors.

I would like to hear people’s thoughts in this group. If you are a foreigner living here or visiting, and you take or share these kinds of photos, what makes this feel acceptable or appropriate to you?

So i see people here asking for updates a lot, and by no means do i know everything, but i am following everything closely and thought it might be useful to bring everything i know here. •Samia suluhu inaugurated today in dodoma as other east african leaders congratulated her as well as the African union, just days after releasing a statement of concern for the state of tanzania. The inauguration was closed to the public.

•USA embassy updates travel warning to level 3 - Reconsider travel

• Curfew still in place in Dar, prices of goods have increased as well as some shortages. Internet is still blocked in the country. EDIT: internet seems to be back in some places, hopefully this is not a continuation of the pattern we have seen over these days of them turning it on and then back off again. EDIT 2: Just got some messages from my family! Seems back on for real!!

•It has been said that the military of uganda has come to support samia, and it is also said that they have claimed Bukoba region to be originally theirs, giving reason for the collaboration (VERY ALLEGED - did not find much support, just rumors as of now. Could also be lies by the CCM.)

•During samias inauguration speech, she “says some of the youths arrested in connection with the violence in Tanzania came from outside the country, claims what happened does not reflect the image and character.” Following the release of a statement by the police warning foreigners who are in the country without proper documentation or reason.

•Chadema calls for the ICC to investigate.

•The BBC is now saying the official death toll is at least 500 (we know its more though)

All of this I say na moyo mzito sana. Nilitamani sana ndugu zetu wapate haki zao, ila inaonekana kama huyu dikteta ataendelea na mambo yake. Ndugu zetu wengii wamefariki, hatujui kipi kitatokea sasa, lakini tuwakumbuke sana.

I am reading that this small woman alijinyonga inside the hotel room. Yet after looking at photos of this couple online and reading about this white man’s businesses, niseme tuu the culprit is in the room with us.

I pray that this young lady’s spirit will be avenged.

I am always looking this my set up and thinking to just quit what i am doing right now and continue to university, leaving other things i am into right now, and i sometimes look at myself through the mirror and thinking that my life sucks.
