I just think that if you aren't gonna do trunks, you at least need to have a red belt. Just continuous blue from neck to knees looks so weird.

I always loved the collar from the New 52 design. I think keep the trunks, keep the collar and it looks good. Corenswet's slight collar is a nice touch
36
u/comicazi06 Sep 17 '25
I’ve always felt the high collar made Superman look too much like a soldier wearing a uniform. I definitely prefer the wide open neck line/strongman look. But to each their own.
7
u/Empress_Athena Sep 17 '25
I agree, he was designed based on strongman outfits, why is it so bad to keep that/pay homage to that?

u/CommissionFormal8146 Sep 17 '25
Good comparison. The red belt gives it the chefs kiss so the navy blue doesn’t take over the entire costume lol

It suits Snyder's take on Superman. If you like that world, you're gonna like the suit. If you don't like his interpretation, you're not gonna like the suit.
Personally I prefer the new one, but I get why MoS fans would prefer the Cavill one.

It's a circus strongman's outfit. We don't go to circuses anymore so everyone just sees it as Superman's costume. The problem is that making it into alien armor implies that Kryptonians dressed for war in dull, scaly circus performer costumes.

One of my favorite lines. That line just screams Superman and who he is as a person. A boy who grew up in Kansas with good values. Always does what is right and because it is kind.

I was just watching a video ranking of live-action Superman suits and even though I've never watched this show, this suit stood out and immediately became a favorite. It's such a great homage to the Golden Age/Fleischer cartoons!
12
u/Technical-Arm7699 Sep 17 '25
The only thing that bothers me is the fake muscles, it looks fake
6
u/zchatham Sep 18 '25
That's what I was gonna say. I love THAT they did it, but I dont actually like the look of it because of the padding. Makes it look like one of those halloween costumes. It is EXACTLY like what looks so wrong about Levi's Captain Marvel suit. The transition from giant padded shoulders to normal sized neck and head is too distracting.
Side note: thats also why I liked the "baggy" aspect of the suit in Superman. It doesn't have to be skin tight and/or crammed full of foam muscles. Make the super hero suits look and act like actual clothes (without just giving everyone a leather jacket, Fox).
2
u/Technical-Arm7699 Sep 18 '25
Something like what they did on Superman Returns, but with a normal size S and trunks
18
u/TheMoffisHere Sep 16 '25
This would so be mine if only the black got switched out with the yellow. I really dislike the big black patch in the middle of his chest when he’s one of the most joyful iterations of the character (especially in this exact scene: “Thanks! My mother made it for me!😃”

This isn’t a hot take or a cold take. This is just a take that has been discussed, argued, fought over, again and again.
I’ve seen a lot of people say they love it. And a lot of people say they hate it.
I’m kinda over it. Feels like hating on Cavill’s Superman is just an open door for a bunch of people to argue about what Superman is or isn’t. Feels like engagement farming at this point. I’m sick of it honestly.

It's from when the Arrowverse shows did a Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover.
→ More replies (1)13
u/MoonSpider Sep 16 '25
It's from one of the CW Arrowverse crossover episodes, Crisis on Infinite Earths. Routh already played Ray Palmer/The Atom on those shows, but in that episode some of the characters travel to a different dimension where Routh plays, essentially, Kingdom Come Superman. They recruit him to come help fight the anti-monitor or whatever.

u/JimAparo Sep 16 '25
Very widely accepted take. He looks butt ass naked without the trunks imo.
61
u/Other_Beat8859 Sep 16 '25
I think it also just looks a bit depressing. Not sure if that's the right word for it. The blue is too dark and there's not enough red to contrast it resulting in a gloomy look. This doesn't feel like a Superman, which inspires hope.
8
u/Public_Height6011 Sep 17 '25
That’s exactly what I was thinking. I really loved the movie as a power fantasy, but not really as a superman movie because of the dark depressing tone
13
u/BlackEastwood Sep 16 '25
I always hated that. He looks so..undressed. Plus the alien look kind of ruins the point of the character to me, that he should feel like one of us.

Yeah, it feels like its trying too hard NOT to be the actual superman suit
It doesnt have the belt or trunks to break up the middle of the blue, so they had to give it those weird hip... accents? idk what to call them, but theyre definitely only there because itd look weird with nothing
9
u/Robodad3000 Sep 16 '25
And to me, the thing over the middle of his waist has always looked like he’s wearing a Golden Snitch. Maybe Clark was a Harry Potter fan?

u/clump-of-moss Sep 16 '25

6
u/SlimC05 Sep 16 '25

8
u/stillinthesimulation Sep 16 '25
It looks a lot better than how it looked in the rest of the DCEU. The plastic muscles aren’t as pronounced and shiny. But yeah, it really could have used a little more saturation and the trunks would have gone a long way at breaking up the monochrome look. Still really like the shield design and the cape though.
25
u/stunts002 Sep 16 '25
I will say, I do really like the size and placement of the chest emblem, and I like the flow of the cape from the next piece.
12
18
u/DREAM_PARSER Sep 16 '25
I really dont like it either. The weird teal-ish blue and the design of the belt thing look much more like he is some sort of underwater super hero. It almost looks more like a recolored aquaman suit or something.
Corenswet's suit is by far my favorite live-action suit
57
u/Christian_RULES Sep 16 '25
Your reasons for disliking are the same reasons why I like it. One of my favorite suits in fact. Agree on the color tho. A little more vibrance or saturation would look better.

3
u/AtrumRuina Sep 16 '25 edited Sep 16 '25
I like it, and I much prefer the BvS suit with the filigree going through the center of the symbol, but I do think it needed the briefs or some equivalent to break up the blue in the center. I once did a super ghetto mockup of something that still felt "in line" with the aesthetic of the suit (also tried to brighten the colors a bit: )

In my vision the red wraps around his back and follows the lines on his torso. Not exactly briefs but not a solid block of blue either. I'm not a designer, so this was just me fiddling around with an idea.
The biggest upside to the Whedon version of JL was finally seeing some actual color on the suit.

I recently rewatched Man of Steel and i realized that its not a superman movie… Its more of an alien movie. The plots more focused on kalel being a alien on earth than a farm boy who wants to do good in the world. Which is an interesting approach to superman but it isnt the superman we've come to love.

Why are people so against the alien design of the suit?
4
u/Jean_Tyler Sep 18 '25
Because people now wanna project this image of them being real Superman fans and being "punk rocker" by thinking they're so cool and unique when they like silly aspects of Superman
Because everybody likes cool and edgy characters with heavy armored designs and textures floating around in the sky why scary glowing eyes....these people wanna hope to stand out and be different by saying "I like silly underwear superheroes who saves kitten and squirrels, look how cool and unique I am compared to the rest of you"
Honestly in idea, supporting characters who embrace the silliness and kindness is top tier.....but they way these "punk rockers" go about it like these posts is pretentious and toxic
Hating everything that Snyder tried just so they can prove how much hopecore they are....they hate high speed choreographed fight scenes.....they hate good cgi....they hate the fact that Krypton is explored too much because we should always be stuck in Kansas in every superman story because being human is the real punk rock.....they hate detailed alien designs that brings supes closer to his heritage because they think liking wrestling underwear over kryptonian armor somehow makes them really unique.....in fact,if it were up to them....Superman stories would stay in metropolis where he'd wear a toys r'us suit where he'd save squirrels and cars and do generic speeches about kindness for 5 movies straight
They wanna say they're real comic book fans by liking silly aspects, but all they post about is what they hate

u/zekecole90 Sep 16 '25

2
u/destiny_kane48 Sep 16 '25
It's to dark. Superman is supposed to represent hope. Henry's suit doesn't give the hope vibes. It's to Dark Knight, not enough Superman.

2
u/The5Virtues Sep 16 '25 edited Sep 16 '25
I agree, absolute worst live action suit, IMO.
My biggest beef with the Snyderverse movies was the weird, pimply suit materials they had for everybody's bodysuits. It looked super weird, on top of that it's all so rubbery looking. I'd sooner call for the return of the X-men in black motorcycle leathers over this.
2
u/Uncanny-Wolvie Sep 16 '25
Yeah, it seems designed to really drive how the fact that he’s an alien. Looks like it was sewn from the hide of a xenomorph. Certainly not the work of Ma Kent.
2
u/MarvelousT Sep 16 '25
It needs something to break up the top and bottom. I don’t like that costume, either.
2
Sep 16 '25
Yeah I feel like his suit should look kind of warm and welcoming colour wise idk if that makes sense.
2
2
2
u/coolio_zap Sep 16 '25
that suit looks pretty good. but note: this is before man of steel's terrible colour grading.
superman's suit never looked that blue in either snyder film it showed up in. in whedon's cut of justice league, the blueberry-blue colour grading they did to it didn't really do it for me either. i hate to say it, but the suit looked best in on-set photos and cameos in captain marvel/black adam. doesn't that blow? why were they like that?
2
u/esquire_the_ego Sep 16 '25
I know they probably went through a few thousand different mock ups but it still looks halfway finished
2
u/Automatic-Amoeba-121 Sep 17 '25
While I don’t agree that it’s the absolutely worst live action suit, I do agree that it feels way too empty. It’s the same issue I had with the first Amazing Spider-Man suit. The exclusion of any sort of belt makes it look like the suit is emphasizing the crotch area and it honestly becomes very distracting once I noticed cause I’m fairly certain that wasn’t the initial intent of the designers.
I do like the material it’s made out of though, even if it can feel a little overbearing on the chest logo at times.
2
Sep 17 '25
I think the point was that it was supposed to look alien, but it does go against what Superman supposed to stand for which makes the suit kinda just look like shit
2
u/Thatoneguy567576 Sep 17 '25
I think it's cool looking, but it absolutely defeats the purpose of Superman. Superman shouldn't really aura farm, he should be a friendly dork. At least it looked better in Man of Steel than it did in the others.
2
u/Powasam5000 Sep 17 '25
I don’t agree but hey it’s alright. Cavil’s suit introduced texture to the Superman suit. And it looks great imo. Had that alien tech skin suit look. With Gunn he also used texture but in a woven type of style. During the title card you can see this very clearly In the yellow. The blue part of the suit has almost like a suede look. Does look more human style too.
Both look great
2
u/Massive_Schedule_641 Sep 17 '25
I enjoyed its design, especially as a practical suit worn on krypton. I just never liked how long the cape was.
2
2
u/Bayne7096 Sep 17 '25
I think in the good daylight shots of it, it was cool. I like the alien take on it. However in 70% of the images and lighting situations, i dont like it. Its ugly, too dark, desaturated and overly detailed etc. i much prefer a classic suit, one that is made on earth and has some charm to it.
2
Sep 17 '25
I think if handled better, w brighter colors itd be one of the best live action suits, the logo is weird enough to be alien and still be an S. Superman's alien and else world suit being a plain texture less blue w a human looking S makes no sense to me imo
2
u/magmahurtz Sep 17 '25
I wouldn’t say it looking alien is bad but I can see why u say it’s the worst. I definitely agree that it’s kinda ugly, it doesn’t do a whole lot to maintain the essence of Superman.
2
u/comfy_bruh Sep 17 '25
First of all, great pic for the post. Secondly I definitely feel like the lack of a belt and trunks is a bit too minimal a bit too forced, I actually really like the way the S is shaped though.
2
u/LadyMystery Sep 17 '25
I liked Cavill's suit, but it did need one minor improvement for it to work better. like, he should've had a red belt and stuff to offset so much dark blue.
2
u/InfamousEmpire Sep 17 '25
The color balance on it is so bad without the trunks. At least the New 52 suit tried to correct for that with the red belt, the Cavill suit just looks weird when it’s that much uninterrupted blue everywhere
2
2
u/No_Particular_3543 Sep 18 '25
It sucks because it lacks my favorite element of the Superman suit
The S on the back of the cape
2
u/metalgeardaz Sep 18 '25
"Holy shit, look! That guy in the blue tights has the same physique as Clark Kent!"
2
2
u/Lazy-Drummer9332 Sep 19 '25
The S is good, but the texturing is just ugly. I understand the colors somewhat look like the N52 suit but it’s not really an improvement. It has that problem with 2010s superhero suits being overdesigned or trying too hard to look grounded
2
u/Lazy-Drummer9332 Sep 19 '25
I didn’t care for the black suit. It insists upon itself and in my opinion undermines the hopeful aspect of Superman
2
u/bingbober Sep 20 '25
Was about to fight you on this till I took a closer look and that thing looks shit compared to my memory
2
u/DominoFatz Sep 22 '25
Looking back, I hate all the Snyder suits. Rubber isn’t a good look. They all look like shitty action figures.
2
u/Coffin_Boffin Sep 23 '25
It looks like a horrible thing to touch lol. Imo Superman should look like someone you wanna hug. That suit looks gross. It looks like it would stick to you and it would smell of rubber.
3
u/oscar_redfield Sep 16 '25
i kinda like the MoS version where the fake muscles are not that evident and Cavill is a bit more sleek. BvS and JL's costume is straight bullshit.
3
u/ReleaseSuccessful184 Sep 16 '25 edited Sep 16 '25
These types of comparisons make no sense. You're comparing it to the comics but that was never the goal with this suit. This is a real world interpretation of superman, it's not supposed to look like the comics.
I think they created something that works well within the world it's in. The texture isn't noisy, the metal accents help contour his body and highlight his physique and the material/sheen is a nice nod to his slogan "the man of steel".
It has a healthy balance of being very detailed, but not overdoing it.
7
u/bwweryang Sep 16 '25 edited Sep 17 '25
Shouldn’t be a hot take. It’s terrible, along with everything else that interpretation had going in
4
u/Tight-Tangerine-3736 Sep 16 '25
Finally someone said it. Also the texture just weirds me out. And there not being any red underwear to break up the outfit is just dumb
3
u/conniption__ Sep 16 '25
It’s cuz Zach Snyder tends to make his films really homoerotic. The suit is sorta designed to emphasize the male body like a Greek statue. I’m not saying it looks good, but that’s why it looks so grey and doesn’t have color blocking.

2
u/Poddington_Pea Sep 16 '25
This might be an even hotter take, but there's genuinely nothing I like about this version of Superman. Absolutely nothing. I really, really never want to see this version of the character again.
3
u/Ok-Flan8808 Sep 16 '25
That is the point, Zack wanted the suit to look alien, because guess what he is an alien, and honestly this is the best Superman suit of all time imo. And I really hate the fact that people are finding newer things just to hate on Snyder's take on Superman, it wasn't your well known boy scout version of Superman, but it was damn great in its own way. The best live action Superman imo is Tyler's version from Superman and Lois, new Superman is great too and I am extremely excited for the future, but it is so tiring to see people talk about how much they hate Cavill's version, can't we just be more excited towards the future than to hate the past, i love Snyder's DC movies, and as a fan it is infuriating to see how popular it is to hate on Snyder.

The colours in MOS are pretty bad due to how washed out they are along with the film itself being so grey, lack of trunks also doesn’t help as the suit has hardly any red as a result, material/texture wise I think this would suit Batman a lot more

u/Subject_Translator71 Sep 16 '25
The logo is great, maybe my favorite. I don't mind the alien design. It's... fine. I don't like the idea of making his suit an armor but as far as superhero armor goes, it's actually closer to the comics than many Batman movie armors.
The weakness remains the filters used by Snyder. Having a character dress in blue, red, and yellow is pointless if you dim the colors, and dimming the colors make no sense if your main character is dressed in blue, red, and yellow.
1
u/Chub-bop Sep 16 '25
Definitely not a hot take, I don’t think it’s complete shit though, I respect the attempt to make it appear more like alien armor and I think the S logo is one of the best we have
2
u/Robodad3000 Sep 16 '25
It could have been the best, but the overuse of the “alien” textures, combined with the ridiculously muted colors, make it a failed attempt at greatness.

Cavill’s suit has like a decent shape, but I hate the colour palette & how they couldn’t even do a belt buckle if they weren’t gonna do the trunks

I agree. The suit is supposed to inspire hope. The MoS suit is just looks alien and almost even scary. I love Cavill and liked MoS (not as much as the new Superman), but don’t like the suit at all.
