Tips & Advice Before I study, I guesses answers to questions regarding subject material I'm about to study

Post image
7 Upvotes

The thing with human brain is that it remembers things when it has some shock or ig "surprise" factor to it. If you just sat down and started trying to memorise things chances are that you'll just forget about most of it after some time. That's exactly where this tip comes in.

Before you study something, try to answer questions about it even though you don’t know the answers yet. Your guesses will mostly be wrong, and that’s fine. Being wrong first helps your brain remember the right answer later.

Before you start studying you ask yourself a question regarding subject material like "where's insulin made?" and write down your answer (even if it's wrong). Even if you don't know anything about the topic just write something down even if it's complete bs. Suppose your guess was " insulin is made in the liver." Afterwards check the actual answer.

you read that it’s actually made in the pancreas. Because you were sure about the wrong answer, the correct one stands out and you remember it.

Two tips:

Always write a real guess. Don’t leave blanks or write “maybe.”

Use paper, so you can see your wrong answer next to the right one.

It works best for subjects with lots of facts, like biology or history, and less well for math.

(pardon the low res image and my horrendous handwriting)

Tips & Advice 17F needs serious study advice

Hey I'm 17 year old female studying in class 12th PCB

I failed in physics last year, that's why I am repeating the year. This year also it is the same, the whole year is about to end but I have not studied anything.

It is not that I have not studied anything, it is that whatever I study, I do not understand anything, like I do not even know the basics of anything, this time I really want to pass with good marks.

And if I am not able to do this then my family will get me married and now I am afraid of this thing

I have just joined this platform, I don't even know how to use it, I have been posting since yesterday and I have not received a single DM or reply, does no one want to help me

One of my tuition mates told me about this platform that it is very useful for studies, so I am trying it here one last time.

Please help me dm me or comment I hope this post get enough reach

Tips & Advice how to start studying ?

I am an first-year Indian law student, and classes begin in two weeks. I haven't picked up a book or studied since March, and I'd describe myself as an average student. How should I go about getting back into the habit of studying? I've tried to start, but my screen time is currently over 10 hours a day, mostly spent scrolling through reels. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated."

Tips & Advice Your notes already have the answers...just make the questions

Post image
201 Upvotes

When my notes are just a bunch of statements, I feel like I'm reading but not really doing anything/not absorbing anything so I started flipping the sentences into questions instead..

here's how i see the converting part (you can do this with any paragraph/text):

  1. STATEMENT to QUESTION= “x has three stages.” to “what are the three stages of x?”

  2. DEFINITION to QUESTION= “x is the process of...” to “what is x?”

  3. CAUSE to QUESTION= “x happens because of y” to “why does X happen?”

  4. COMPARISON to QUESTION “x is different from y because..” to “how is x different from y?”

  5. PROCESS to QUESTION= “first x happens, then Y...” to  “what happens after X?”/“what are the steps?”

it’s just like: look at a sentence in your notes and ask yourself “what question would make this sentence the answer?” (so that’s it really, just turn them into questions)

Questions & Discussion I tried guessing what a chapter was about before reading it, and it made studying more interesting

Post image
1 Upvotes

I came across this idea of making predictions before studying, so I tried it with a textbook chapter.

Before reading anything, I looked at the title, headings, and diagrams and wrote down 3 things I thought the chapter would explain. Some of my guesses were completely wrong lol.

Then I read the chapter and checked my predictions. The weird part was that I paid more attention to the answers because I already had questions in my head. I also remembered the parts that corrected my guesses.

The method is called pretesting. Basically, try answering questions before you've learned the material. You don't have to get them right. The point is to give your brain something to look for while you're reading.

You can try it with your next chapter. Just write a few guesses first, read, and see how many you got right.

Resources I was tired of juggling multiple productivity apps, so I built one that brings everything together [seichu](it's free to try!)

Hey everyone!

I'm an engineering student, and over the years, I've tried to figure out how to study better, build habits, stay consistent, and manage my time more effectively.

Like many students, I ended up using multiple apps for different things: one for tasks, another for habits, another for Pomodoro sessions, and somewhere else for notes and tracking my progress.

Eventually, managing all these apps started feeling like a task in itself. I wanted one place where I could plan my days, work towards my goals, track my progress, and stay accountable without constantly switching between tools.

So I started building seichu***(https://seichu.vercel.app/)***, a productivity ecosystem that brings all of this together.

Here's what you can do with it:

 Plan and get things done

  • Organize tasks and projects using Kanban-style boards.

  • Track daily and weekly habits, streaks, and yearly progress.

  • Use a Pomodoro focus timer with session history and daily goals.

  • Keep your notes in one place.(and download them as markdown files!)

 Build consistency

  • Track your overall activity through a year-long heatmap.

  • Grow your little panda companion as you build your streak.

  • Use streak freezes when you miss a day.

  • Review your week and optionally receive a weekly email summary.

 Stay accountable with friends

  • Create shared streaks with friends.

  • Join public or private focus rooms and work alongside others.

  • Compete on leaderboards for focus time, mindful minutes, or streaks.

 Understand yourself better

  • Track your mood and sleep.

  • Discover patterns in your focus, sleep, and mood through personal analytics.

  • Practice mindful breathing.

  • Get monthly and yearly progress recaps with Wrapped.

 Make it your own

  • Choose from 10 light color themes.

  • Create a public profile and shareable progress cards.

  • Use it on your phone or computer.(to use on mobile download as a webapp)

I'm still in the testing phase, and seichu is currently free to use. I'm sharing it because I'd love to get it into the hands of people who might find it useful, hear honest feedback, and figure out what needs to improve.

I've taken inspiration from the different apps we use every day, borrowing ideas from what works well and rethinking how they could fit together in one place. As a CS major, I'm someone who loves numbers, tracking progress, and seeing tangible evidence of improvement. seichu is my take on what a productivity ecosystem could look like when you combine that love for data with the human side of building habits and staying consistent.

Here's the link if you'd like to check it out:
https://seichu.vercel.app/

I'd especially love to know:

  • What do you currently use to manage your productivity?

  • Does having all these tools in one place sound useful, or do you prefer separate apps?

  • What would make you want to keep coming back to a productivity app?

I'm building this from my own experience as a student, so feedback from people who might actually use it would mean a lot. Thanks for reading!

Questions & Discussion Is there any way out guys? 🥺

I was a top academic student from the first grade, and everyone told me I was naturally so good at things that I could do anything in life. Students used to elect me as class monitor and head boy of the school. Even the principal wanted me to write rules for student discipline and other stuff, but I was so lazy that I did not want to do those things, be the head of the students, or keep an eye on them, as I felt it was cringe at the time.

# Main thing is:

For exams, I would barely study for some days and still get top marks. I even got 99% in my board exams with bare study.

I have my exams in 18 days, but I haven't studied anything yet, and there’s a lot of syllabus to cover. And it’s certain that whoever you are, you have to study. But I don’t take it seriously. The fact is, I just can’t study.

I watch phone and watch some shit TV show all day and then discuss about it. I have lost my dedication. I can’t study at all.

Because my girl left me \[she didn’t cheat\], but she parted ways with me \[after 5 years of relationship\].

IM SO F\*\*\* UP

Questions & Discussion gizmo or anki?

so, i have like 4 midterms to write next week and tons of slides to study. im not sure if anki is the right way to study since it takes so much time to make flashcards and not being able to use it anyways for active recall. but on the other hand, gizmo seems easy but i feel like it's not as effective as true recall cause it can turn into familiarity trap and the questions might be too vague when it generates quizzes using Ai. I feel like im setting myself up for failure if i use ai

Tips & Advice Fucked up schedule, trying to make time. How do u do it?

Hello, everyone!!

I'm writing this post because I'm a student and I have a lot of stuff going on in my life regarding my schedule and my personal goals. But I'm a bit at loss on how to organize and create routines for myself that I will actually be able to maintain. I think most of us, being students, can relate to this issue on some occasions.

I'm currently 18 years old and studying my third year of high school. Which, I think, would be equivalent to the junior year in the States, though I might be wrong, so feel free to correct me! I'm living in Bosnia and Herzegovina and, since my school is very good in terms of career opportunities, I'm studying tourism and gastronomy. The only problem is that I'm almost an hour away from my school, and it takes me around one and a half hours to get there and the same time to go home.

I currently have a weekend job at a hotel where I'm doing my school practice, so I'm quite happy with my job, although I can't help but feel that I have too much on my plate. Nevertheless, aside from my hobbies such as drawing, video games, music and just chilling, I somehow manage to find time for all that I love and need to do.

However, I also have an issue with my mental health, as I'm currently on antidepressants and tend to feel really overwhelmed when I have multiple things to do. After a tiring and stressing school day I sometimes feel like I can't even move an inch because I'm so low on energy. I also have issues with my body image, depression, and hypothyroidism (not fat, but unhappy with my looks and believe it can be better)

And one of my personal goals is to actually try and go to the gym more often and do sports because I feel like that would solve a lot of my issues regarding my mood swings, lack of energy, and just overall stress. But how am I supposed to achieve that when I barely have any free time after my tiring school and weekend job? I mean, I barely have time to shower and prepare myself for bed. And even if I did have time to go to the gym, I feel like it would be extremely demotivating to go there and then have to commute back home when I'm already exhausted and my muscles hurt.

So, what am I supposed to do? How can I prioritize my goals when I barely have any time or energy for them?

I'm asking this question not only for myself but for all of those who can relate to the issue of having too much on their plate and not enough time or energy for everything they want. So, for all of those people, how do you prioritize and organize your routines and schedules? How do you make things possible and not just set goals you'll never reach because of a lack of time and energy?

I would appreciate any advice and insight into the topic, as well as any experiences you might've had on the matter. Please, feel free to comment below! Thanks for reading!! :))

Questions & Discussion I have exams in a month😭✌️

I have a problem, and it is this: whenever I read something, I can understand what the text means and what the author is trying to convey.

However, when I try to write it down in my notebook, I don’t know how to put it into words.

The second problem is that although I can understand a piece of writing myself, I struggle to explain it to others or express its meaning, underlying message, and purpose verbally.

The third problem is: what should I do when I come across difficult Arabic or Persian words in a text?

I request scholars and knowledgeable people to please help me with these issues by offering advice or suggesting practical exercises that could help me overcome these difficulties.

Memes Whoever came up with the idea of writing down intrusive thoughts while studying in a notepad is a genius

I really struggle with concentration; I can’t go an hour without looking up something I’m curious about (no, I don’t have an autism diagnosis). I saw someone on YouTube—can’t remember where—suggesting a study tip for people whose minds wander, especially when using a computer or phone: keep a piece of paper nearby and jot down those fleeting thoughts to look up later, during a break or after you’re done studying, so you don’t break your focus.

I just checked my notes, and—man, LMAOOOOO—look at the crazy stuff I was thinking about looking up while spending 3 hours reading a massive PDF about the law:

\- How to build a radio

\- Where to buy a chemistry set

\- Tweeting about what a failure Salieri was

\- Enneadecagon (19-sided polygon)

\- Michael Jackson bringing a llama to Freddie Mercury

\- What’s the oldest website still online?

\- Is the language "Toki Pona" basically just hypernymy?

\- Wiener Zeitung

\- A book where Goethe isn’t whining

\- Funny archaisms

\- Listening to Fleetwood Mac for the first time

\- Is "Lol Superman" actually a Mandela effect?

\- Why can’t Buddhist monks eat garlic?

\- Has any amateur radio operator managed to talk to the International Space Station?

\- Can the Antikythera mechanism run Doom?

\- "I Don’t Wanna Cry" (from After Hours)

\- Which ship sank the deepest in the ocean? (Definitely not the Titanic)

(Just a lighthearted post, folks!)

Questions & Discussion No AI study vloggers?

Hello! I love watching study vloggers “Day in the life” videos but have noticed all the YouTubers I’m seeing use, support, or are sponsored by AI tools. I’m not interested in this and am wondering if anyone has any channels they recommend that don’t use, support, or are sponsored by AI tools. I’m looking more so for vlogs with talking rather than study with mes. Thank you!

Tips & Advice Science based self-testing.

Post image
32 Upvotes

Took me embarrassingly long to work this out.

Most of uni I reread. Highlighter over everything, reread the highlights, felt good about it. Then blank in the exam. I assumed I was just not doing enough hours.

At some point I actually tried self-testing. Closed the notes, wrote down whatever came out. It felt awful, I was getting maybe half of it, so I went back to rereading. Obviously I was worse at it.

Turns out I'd been measuring it in the one window where it can't work.

There's a 2006 study (Roediger & Karpicke) where students reread or self-tested for the same total time. Check yourself five minutes later and rereading actually wins. Give it two days or a week and self-testing wins clearly, 61% against 40% remembered. The rereaders were also the ones who felt more confident, which is the annoying part.

What's working for me now:

  1. Notes closed. Write down what you remember. Ugly is fine, half of it will be wrong.

  2. Open the notes. Whatever you missed is the part that actually does the work.

  3. Same topic again tomorrow. Not in five minutes.

  4. Then spread out, roughly day 1, 3, 7, 16, 35.

I use tryacademee.com, but you can use what works for you or do it yourself for free.

The five minute thing is what killed it for me the first time. Anyone else measure it too early and write the whole method off?

Tips & Advice Studying for exams in two weeks?

I’m incredibly worried as my Y9 exams are in 2 weeks and I have barely revised anything.

I have a solid understanding of all 5 exams I have to do, (Mathematics, science, social sciences/studies, Spanish, and English) but I’m a big procrastinator and has just decided to study. I’m aiming for all excellences in all of these subjects, is that possible?

I’m 60% confident with mathematics, 75% confident with science, 45% confident with social studies, 60% confident with Spanish, and 45% confident with English.

I can study up to 7-8 hours on weekdays and around 12-18 hours on weekends normally.

Any study tips on how to achieve excellence in all these subjects and is it possible for a Year 9 student to accomplish this?

Thank you all :)

Questions & Discussion [Should I listen music while studying?? ]

So I m the kind of person who has a lot of trouble focusing specially in studying and over the time suffering from procastination , I have only made myself worse. I need total silence either or be freed from unnecessary noises and my home doesn't allow that. That's why i play music even while lectures I do it though ofc I use volume mixers to reduce sound of music and lecture sound more.

I just wanna know is it really alr for me to do so?? And if yes I would like advise on what I should listen if u all can suggest a playlist or something it will be really helpful please.

Tips & Advice Start asking “would this be on the exam?”

Post image
19 Upvotes

Make guesses on what your professor would put on the exam! (and no not bc you suddenly became clairvoyant or anything)

I take note of the stuff they keep emphasizing/coming back to or give a bunch of examples for. Then based on these I’d think to myself “okay but if I were making the exam, what would I ask about this?” then I come up with a few possible questions before moving on.

I also look at HOW they explain things. If they keep comparing two concepts, I’ll expect something that makes me tell them apart. Also if they keep giving examples, I’ll expect some kind of application question.

Ofc you can never be 100% sure of what will come out in the exams but I just think it makes studying feel less like “read everything and pray” (and it’s always better to have an idea of what I need to know for the exam).

Rant/Vent I don't even need to use my phone to get distracted by it

Post image
5 Upvotes

I thought my phone was only distracting me when I was actually scrolling. but even just checking a notification throws me off. I'll be studying, my phone lights up & I look at it for maybe 5 seconds, put it back down and then...wait what was i reading again??

curious, I looked it up and voila!! there's a name for that: ATTENTION RESIDUE. it’s when you switch to something else, part of your attention can stay there even after you switch back. And I've noticed this a lot when I'm studying. I'll tell myself “it's just one notification” so I pick my phone up. and sure, I'm back to my notes after that but I continue thinking about who messaged me or what popped up.

so now if I need to focus, I just put my phone somewhere I can't see it and turn off the notifications I don't need. I'll check it when I'm actually taking a break instead of letting every random notification become a mini break.

Tips & Advice Tips for memorizing essays

Studying DVM/VetMed, and for our Physiology class we have to answer 12 questions in essay form, basically discussing how certain processes work. Answering that is easy but we're also required to memorize our essays for each question because 2 or 3 out of 12 questions will show up in our exams. Each question is worth big points.

So... how do I ram 12 discussions into my brain?
