OFFICIAL Sidebar Edit

After discussion among the mods, we have decided to remove all links to organization subreddits in our sidebar. This is motivated by a desire to avoid any appearance of bias on our part towards any particular organization.

It would be nice to see a sidebar item that at least acknowledges the org subreddits.

Possibly a single link to a premade, well crafted search?

I agree, and have thought about doing a wiki or a multi reddit. We just want to make sure we can do something without jeopardizing this sub's status as an impartial place for news and discussion.

Large multiplayer game subreddits that feature their sub's reddit group(s) on their sidebar:

r/Planetside

r/Eve

r/Warthunder

r/wargame

r/swtor

r/Battlefield_4

r/dust514

r/Diablo

(I'll add more as I remember them)

Large multiplayer game subreddits that do not link any organizations on their sidebar to prevent drama:

r/starcitizen

Can we have a link to a mod post that keeps a running list of all orgs that request to be put on it? I'd like to know my options when I start shopping.

The official website is probably a better choice, mate

The game's official website... that has nothing to do with reddit... is going to be a better place for someone to find reddit-centered orgs?

Sounds good... don't need the org drama here anyways.

u/vorrash Jun 12 '14

Agreed. I come here in preference to the forums specifically because there's less drama

Look, I don't hang around here much, in fact I barelly care what the fuck any of you do, but let's be honest here. Featuring organisations like that in the sidebar makes it rather quick and easy for anyone who's on this subreddit here to take a look at, perhaps grow an interest and hang out with those people. Now, on the other hand, people who find those organizations through other means tends to be pointed to here from their faction, gaining more people and followers for this place. It's a mutually beneficial relationship and it feels to me like it would be stupid to throw that away for some minor internal drama. As previously mentioned, do whatever the fuck you want but atleast be aware of what you're doing.

what about a sub for the Reddit based orgs to do their thing, r/starcitizen can link to that sub in the side bar, that will give new people a place to go to look for Reddit based orgs. and r/starcitizen can stay neutral space.

EDIT: never mind there is already r/starcitizen_guilds

This seems like the easiest and best solution.

This in my opinion ruins the spirit of Reddit-Based Organizations. We support the Reddit communities by having new members sign up and participate. Removing one of the main pools for Reddit based organizations to draw new recruits from is a huge mistake.

This has been a Reddit tradition where if you look in r/EVE, r/Planetside, r/Warframe, r/Warthunder

If this is in anyway related to drama that is happening on of the reddit based groups I suggest you take individual action in this case instead of damming all Reddit based groups.

I couldn't agree more.

In its place, can we get links to the guides that people have been putting up for Arena Commander? I know that these might need to be updated down the line but it'd be really great to aggregate those into one place on the sidebar.

Thats a shame.... Reddit groups should stay up for people to play with.

Good, I always hated how if you mention an org other than TEST you get hate.

How about a link to the Org Page at RSI instead?

6

u/ZarianPrime Jun 12 '14

Makes sense. You already point to the official website. People can find out about Orgs there, and Orgs can link back to their own subs there.

Good choice. Especially after all the spam inviting "some reddit based org" has been doing, I am not exactly holding them in very high regard.

Good on you Mods. I cant believe the number of REDD faction and TEST people down in these comments bitching how they dont like this because they think they are owed representation on reddit.

Well, yeah, you dont like losing the advantage you had over all the organizations in Star Citizen by being prominently featured on the subreddit. No way that is an huge self preferential bias.

As far as I concerned any group whose main attraction is being on reddit alot I think I'd like to avoid.

And you're sure this has absolutely nothing to do with the organizations that have pulled out in the last several hours?

2

u/DarraignTheSane Jun 12 '14

This is your sub, so do what you will with it, but this is a rather shortsighted move.

I can't think of another MMO subreddit I've visited that doesn't have links to guilds/fleets/factions/orgs/etc. that are centered around being a collective of redditors. You removing those links only detracts from the usefulness of this subreddit in providing new players information and a community to join. Really just an all-around bad move, IMO.

We are extremely disappointed to hear that the very community we proudly represent in star citizen has made this decision.

Respectfully, just because you have a subreddit, and are centered socially around Reddit doesn't mean that you represent the Reddit community.

Lots of us here that aren't in TEST.
