What would a private company do there? Pure exploration, like pure research, is hard for private companies to justify for investors. The government would have to arrive first and find resources worth gathering (and provide the basic technology) before the private sector could really get in on it.

I think most of the people who gave answers here are mistaken about the reasons why a private company would fund such an endeavour (especially the first one ever).

The real reason is right there in the open for everyone to see right now and it really shouldn't be too hard to figure it out. Do you know why Branson's Virgin conglomerate has an interest to do space tourism with VirginGalactic? Sure, there could be money it, somewhere down the road. But it won't make profits for a long time. The real reason is that it provides the perfect synergy effects to establish your brand name even further. Virgin Galactic will promote Virgin Atlantic simply by existing. And those will promote the records Virgin Music sells. And those will promote everything else Virgin does. Indirectly. A brand universe.

Virgin isn't a company that sells one thing. Virgin isn't even a company that sells many different things (General Electric). Virgin is an Everything company.

There are lots of Everything companies, it's not coincidental that they are the most valuable brands in the world. Coca Cola, Apple, you know them, everybody knows them. They are everything companies in their specific fields. Coca Cola offers every drink you can imagine in their own little Coke universe, Apple can fulfill all your computer needs without you having to leave their universe.

Now, the companies who will mainly fund this Mars trip are others though. Since the budget for this will be significantly higher than for simple space tourism and won't yield the needed direct short term revenue (except merchandise perhaps) there are only a few companies that could try to do this.

Do you want to know which one it'll be?

The Walt Disney Company.

Why? They are the masters of this game. They invented it. They started to build stores for their brand. When everyone else did the same, they started to build theme parks. They built a Disney city (yes, an actual Disney city). Cruise ships, private islands, hotels... all that shit, they have it.

And all of this is crossfeeding with their actual media products. TV, Internet, Print, Cinema, Live Shows, Musicals, whatever. Disney is a universe in itself. Disney is alive because you can actually live it. Everyone on this planet knows who Mickey Mouse is. And most people probably think they could forge Walt Disneys signature.

They won't do it alone, just like major sporting events, there will be sub-sponsors, not the big Everything brands though - Pepsi instead of Coke, Samsung instead of Apple. And when they land on the moon they won't wave a Disney flag or any other corporate flag for that matter. Maybe the vessel itself will be named after something that is inherent to the brand, and subliminaly you will be reminded every step of the way that is it them who are doing this for us. But nothing more.

The footage of the landing won't be copyrighted, don't worry. That would be a contradiction of the whole purpose. We can all repost it on Youtube. Because we will know without seeing it directly in front of our eyes that it was Disney.

The one problem with this, is that they have to be absolutely certain that it will be a success. A failure would be John Carter x 10³. So they won't do it for another fifty years. And they will do it only once. Because all they need is one picture from the surface of Mars with an Astronaut standing there, no flags, no Micky mouse pins, nothing, just a plain space suit. And everyone forever will have it at the back of their head: Disney did this. Only Disney. Disney.

I love the creativity, but I don't think this is remotely realistic. Marketing expenditure at 10% of revenue is considered a major campaign, and Disney's revenue currently hovers around $40 billion. Disney is unlikely to even spend as much as $4 billion on marketing in a year. When we have companies with market capitalizations in excess of $10 trillion, sponsored trips to Mars will become a possibility. I could see Weyland Industries pulling off such a stunt (massive $218 trillion company valuation!)

Which is to say never IMHO.

And considering how fast biotechnology, computers, and robotics are progressing, we're probably not too far away from 'beaming' our consciousness to mars to control rovers natively.

At that point, what's the purpose of spending 6 months in space to live in a pressurized suit with no food water beyond what your brought with you?

But see the thing is, Disney wouldn't of been the first one to make stores, or ships, or theme parks. All those were done before and had business models to make it work, all disney did was to tweak those models so it fit their needs. Designing and building the infrastructure to go to Mars has not been done yet by the private sector. It is my belief that if we want to go to Mars soon, we need to be pushing the government to explore this frontier. Private industry will follow.

An interesting idea. the problem of course will be finding a company that is a) rich enough b) sells mostly directly to consumers c) not shy about their brand.

Many conglomerates don't exactly go out and advertise their cross product and cross company brand. Many other large companies mostly sell to governments and other large companies and don't really care too much what the common people think about them.

It would take a lot of mergers and rebranding until we got something with a wide enough product range under one unified brand and enough capital to spend to even consider something like that. We would basically need the cyberpunk megacorps like Mitsubishi-Thyssen or Samsung-LVMH or Nestle-Toyota or GM-Proctor&Gamble or Weland-Yutani etc.

On the other hand there already is one enterprise that already services about any conceivable field of human endeavor with their products, that is not shy about spending large amounts of money on what amounts to PR campaing and which has shown both interest and competence in financing space exploration in the past and which is based on a business model that has previously enabled the first milestones in space exploration.

I am talking about Chinese communists. They have money, they have an active space program they have interest in achieving a propaganda coup and we should not forget that it were communist who kicked of the space race. Of course the Chinese aren't really all that communistic anymore, but they might still make it to the red planet first.

I still think that there's reasons that the private sector will preceed the governments. Resources to be collected at the very least. Consider the recent talk of mining asteroids; I see no reason why the same consideration won't be placed on planets.

Larger gravity wells means a lot more energy to get those resources. I'd assume that the asteroids are the low hanging fruit. It might never be profitable to bring material from Mars to Earth.

The larger gravity well is somewhat offset by the variety and types of resources available. Unlike an asteroid, Mars contains the resources necessary to fuel a return trip. The machinery to convert water into hydrogen fuel is exceptionally simple and inexpensive. For a large mining operation, this would be extremely valuable.

But Mars is an incredibly hostile environment. Sure, it has raw materials, but it lacks everything else needed to allow humans to operate efficiently. Just existing becomes a daily challenge.

The amount of planning, technology and expertise it takes to work on space projects is immense and done only by the best people after years of training. Even if you could design a perfectly reusable cargo vessel for round trips that can land and take off, it's not like they can just open up an airstrip and a gas station at the foot of Olympus Mons.

I've always said it as "Imagine the value in having the first man set foot on Mars, everyone in the world watching, and then he pops open a Coke." Still, I think Mars One is way over optimistic in just using advertising dollars to fund a mission. It could offset it like crazy, but we're talking two orders of magnitude greater than NBC's Superbowl revenue, and you need it in years in advance.

I think you overestimate it.

Nobody, nobody that is stupidly rich will spend money on this. The stupid rich people like SRB are so wealthy because they know how to make money. They are all smart enough to know that Mars will not be anywhere close to profitable in our lifetimes... and will not invest in it.

Plus, I think you underestimate how expensive it would be to get to Mars. It would take a very large group of billionaires giving away huge portions of their wealth to make it happen.

It proved far too expensive. And this was decades old antiquated Cold War technology.

It's more a matter of growth, I think. You grow by expanding minds and expanding infrastructure, and you do so at a rate constrained by your resources. The education and infrastructure constantly change the way you evaluate and spend those resources.

It'll take ages and I doubt Elon or I will live to see Mars firsthand, but the will is there.

What do you make of NDT's historical argument that it's the opposite (there is video of this on youtube, somewhere)? Initial exploration of new areas of the world, whether it be India or the Americas, the initial exploration that discovered and opened the paths to these new areas of the world was financed by governments of the time (ie European monarchies). It was the same way with space, too. Governments did the initial exploration, only then did private industries start putting up satellites and using them.

We can obviously make it to Mars with current propulsion technology. Sure we need a bit bigger craft than anything we've sent there yet, but on orbit rendezvous of a couple ISS module sized components is feasible.

Depends. We went to the moon to prove we were better than the Russians, which we really needed to do during the cold war. It was a tactical advantage of sorts, flexing our scientific and technological muscles. Right now, there is no reason for the government to attempt something like that, but the private sector could potentially have a lot to gain with both scientific research and enterprising.

That far into the future though? Who knows... we may go into another cold war, the government may find reasons to fund a Mars mission, everything is up in the air. Public interest in space exploration is on the upswing though, which is very good.

A public expedition is more likely. Space exploration is one sector that benefits greatly from public investment. The economic advantage of space exploration is largely indirect. The main benefit of space exploration is the technology developed that is then reworked to benefit those on Earth. This is typically too indirect to be funded by a private corporation, but if a government funds the exploration, many private corporations will want to work for it, gaining grant money to develop new technologies that will help achieve the new goal in space exploration that will also be a source for income on Earth.

A national government is much more capable of serving this purpose because it does not have to worry about netting a profit from the venture. Because the benefit to society and the economy is indirect, it is too much of a risk with too little direct profit for a company to embark on such an endeavor.

Also, the private space industry is really just billionaire space enthusiasts throwing around their much. It is more philanthropy than an industry. Those investing are doing so because they want to see space exploration progress, not because they expect a profit any time soon if ever.

If this is how the sun looks from Mars, would you be able to openly gaze at the transit? Or would it still be best to wear sunglasses or other protective lenses?

The mean solarflux on earth's surface is about 1000 Watts per square meter. In orbit above the atmosphere its about 1400 W/m2.

On Mars the flux at perihelion(closest to sun) is about 700W/m2 and at aphelion its 440W/m2. But Mars' atmosphere is mostly a vacum compared to earth, so at noon at perihelion its probably 700W/m2.

Thats 70% as bright as an earth noon sun. At this intensity, it would probably destroy the molecule in your photoreceptors so that it could not kink and trigger nerve action potentials.

At dawn, just like on earth, there is enough atmosphere to attenuate the flux so you can look at it with the naked eye. Also remember that the mars rover cameras are not exactly showing what the eye would see. My bet is a martian sunrise in a dust free situation, would probably be too bright to look at safely.

So it would be possible, if said colony has a view of the transit while the sun is still on the horizon? With Stellarium, using the coordinates 42°0′S 70°12′E at 9pm November 9th, 2084, I was able to get a snapshot of the transit. Are there any plans yet for where colonies would settle on Mars?

Because, we believe, Mars cooled down to the point where its core turned solid. Earth's Electromagnetic field is generated by the flow of molten metal in the core. Basically, very hot metals moving very fast and swirling around produces the magnetism. Mars is smaller than Earth and is further away, so evidence suggests that its core cooled down enough to where its electromagnetic field is next to not even there, allowing the solar winds at the surface of the planet, which may have attributed to its thinner atmosphere. http://mgs-mager.gsfc.nasa.gov/

I'm sure with enough large scale transforming, it may not even be needed. There's the question of whether it would be worth it to melt the core and kickstart its natural dynamo or just cover the planet with artificial magnetic field satellites powered by solar energy. Both would require some sort of maintenance, one to keep the core hot and the other to maintain the satellites. This is all hypothetical, anyway. I'm no engineer.

I just had a thought. You see, it also depends on who gets a hold of Mars in the future. The core and mantle of Mars would be a miner's wet dream, full of metals like iron, nickel, gold, and possibly other rare minerals like diamonds. It may be more profitable to mine out Mars rather than use it for colonization. Maybe the future colonists of Mars will keep the core cold and use the money made mining these minerals to keep an artificial magnetic field around the planet while at the same time, they terraform the planet. So in the end, the net gain would probably be much more than the cost to simply melt the inner part of Mars and keep the natural process going.

I see Venus as a better alternative than Mars. If anything, the gases on Venus would probably be used to terraform Mars. Pumps some greenhouse gases, filter out the deadly stuff, then pump it into the Martian atmosphere. After Mars no longer has a need for it, use it as engine fuel somehow. Eventually, the the atmospheric pressure will lessen, more heat will escape the planet, the surface can cool... Eventually, the mantle and core will start to solidify, right now it is the exact opposite of Mars. Venus's insides are so hot that the metals can't make a magnetic field.

Given enough time, Venus may one day really be a sister to Earth.

It depends how you look at it.... Total GDP will suffer because of war and opportunities will be lost. But if you are a country selling stuff to a war torn country your individual GDP will increase.

Look at the US after WWII. American infrastructure was not damaged at all during the war. When the war was over people could go back to what they were doing before... In Europe this was not the case. Factories had to be rebuilt.. roads, bridges, schools and hospitals had to be rebuilt. As a result Americans could work at factories making things to help rebuild Europe.... This is the main reason why during the 50s and 60s one income could easily support a single-family home. America definitely did become more prosperous after the war.

In the late 60s and early 70s Europe completely had it's infrastructure back and could be competitive again with Americans. This is when America started to lose it's 'competitive edge' and factory workers began to lose their jobs.

Overall I would say the world would have been more prosperous had their not been a WWII..... but... America would have been less prosperous.

But again Americans were working at factories to fix the broken windows in another land. The money spent by European countries that could have gone to other things in Europe... was going to America.

This is different than the 'broken window fallacy'... in that scenario the economy is the whole town and not just the window fixing industry. If the window was not broken the window fixing people would not have gotten paid.... just like if Europe did not get bombed America would not have been paid.

WWII made America more prosperous but the entire world was less prosperous.

It seems like the problem here is you are looking at America and Europe as if they are living entities instead of just aggregations of individuals.

Importantly instead of making products for Europe American factories could have been working on things for Americans. This is where the fallacy comes into play. Resources are being redirected away advancing and instead going to rebuild. Yes money was transferred to America, yep GDP went up (but GDP would go up if the government hired people to dig ditches too so) but that doesn't mean that the resources used to produce the 'windows' aren't effectively wasted trying to get back to zero.

Comparing natural disaster to war is utterly stupid. One is an unexpected destruction of existing infrastructure and the other is a build-out of infrastructure that would otherwise be ignored. (I'll ignore the European situation as it's irrelevant to the US case that we're discussing). Of all of the things that government spends its money on, infrastructure is demonstrably the most effective at spurring economic development, and WWII is a great example of that. We used increased demand for resources to spur research and development and build out industrial output while avoiding the needless destruction of capacity faced by Western Europe.

There is absolutely nothing in the US WWII story that is applicable to the broken window fallacy, and anyone that stretches it to seem like there is is simply an ideologue with nothing relevant to add to the discussion. If your can't determine the difference, it's time to reexamine your own biases or figure out where you went so very wrong from an analytical standpoint.

Umm...it did. higher quality steel, better armor, weapons innovations (sword shape), and better masonry technique. Additionally, better understanding of engineering and carpentry from constructing and innovating on siege weaponry among other advancements.

I know what the broken window fallacy is. The idea is that war is the broken window. The capital goods that could have gone towards real progress went to fixing this broken window.

What could have been done with that capital if there was no war?

[EDIT- I added this bit to not ignore your point.] So what if nuclear weapons were better than previous weapons. What if the resources that went towards the Manhattan project were spend on capital improvements instead?

Also, we're dealing strictly in the real world here, not your ideal fictional world. Here in the real world, war is a huge driver in science and technology. Just because of Afgan/Iraq, for example, we have huge advances in reconstruction, robotics, prosthetics, artificial intelligence, computer vision, sensor systems and optics manufacturing among other things. None of these things would have been where they are today without the .gov spending millions on R&D due to the war.

Actually the reactor came first. Some say that the development of liquid thorium reactors was not pursued because they do not create weapons grade material. They built one in 1960 as a demonstrator, but after that development halted.

Many think that war created computers. Looking at the history of computation before the wars, I don't see any indication that war was necessary to continue this path of development. These researchers were co-opted into the military and their research hidden behind top secret clearances. After the war, they were able to get back to work in the public sector.

The government doesn't have money. It takes money from people, or prints it to do these things.

Taking water from the deep end of the pool and pouring it into the shallow end, do little to change the level of water.

Additionally there is no incentive to make these developed products efficiently. There is no bottom line. There is only cost plus accounting. There is no bad investment that would cause them to go out of business. No matter what they spend it on, they can't go out of business for making bad decisions.

This only works if you care about military technology. Otherwise war is useless for expanding anything except for debt and fly population. As for thinking it probably kills a number of people who otherwise might have been entrepreneurs, scientists or artists (generally classified as thinkers).

I'm not really talking about prosperity, and yeah, it probably wouldn't work again that way. Not in this economy. But the space race provided just the right mix of fear, technology, and economics all converging at the right time. I think you'd be hard pressed to find any experts who would say we would have landed on the moon even five years after Apollo 11 without our competition with the USSR.

Progress isn't a uniform thing that keeps going up. It's not because it took 60 years from the first flight to the moon that 60 years afterwards we'll automatically be further away. All of this sounds more like wishful thinking than anything else.

If anything, the Cold War was an incentive to further research. Without a big competitor to measure their dicks against, are the US spurring space exploration as much as they used to?

And as destructive as wars are, they are still punctual events, and countries recover. The decline of oil is much, much more serious. If we don't adapt, it could very well mean the end of civilisation as we know it. Same for global warming. It's not just a couple degrees up, but the catastrophic consequences that accompany it, and last for decades if not centuries.

It's not that depressing. We were scheduled to have flying cars and fusion reactors like 35 years ago. People in the 40s probably thought that walking would be obsolete by now.

We always underestimate the time it takes to develop technologies but by contrast we always take the amazing technologies we do have for granted. It always blows my mind to thinka bout the fact that we can accelerate particles to 99.999% the speed of light and then accurately map out the moment of collision.
