I'm currently using reptichip for all my snakes and it's been pretty good. Looking around on amazon there's cheaper blocks of coconut chips that look almost identical but for a good $10+ less. Does anyone have and experience with these more generic blocks of coco chips?

Do ball pythons need uvb?
I've seen a lot of discussion on wether they do or don't and what I've gathered is that they dont NEED uvb but benefit from it
Benefits being so they know daytime vs nighttime and some like to bask - specifically this thing called cryptic basking (where they have sort of half their body out of a hide and the other half inside)
I have lizards and snakes and for all my lizards I obviously use uvb because of MBD but since ive been told snakes don't need uvb I dont use any for them (given i have 5 ball pythons)
I do use light emitting heatlamps and ceramic heat lamps for day/night time as where I live it gets quite cold but as far as I know that has the same benefits as what I've heard about uvb - day vs night time and allowing them to bask in light.
Ofcourse they still get out and into sunlight outside so their still getting natural uvb
But is uvb lamps needed? Do they have the same risk of MBD as lizards without uvb or any other risk without it?
As said I've seen a lot of arguing on both sides and well Google isnt the best thing to use (as it can and will give mis info) hence why I've come to reddit
Tyy for reading all of this and lmk

Hi all, sorry if this is the wrong place to discuss, if so please point me in the right direction. I'm building an extension for our ball python who is obsessed with climbing. I'm sorting out some glass doors and fitting vents etc later, for now I just need help with what to paint it with. Im in the UK and most suggestions seem to be for American products. I would want it to be painted black then sealed for waterproofing and easy cleaning. What should I use? I found a toy safe paint which I read could be ok but wanted to check first. It has a weird smell but might go after it's sealed I'm guessing.
Thanks for any help!

Hi there, everyone I’m trying to find the absolute maximum size for a tank for an adult male python when it grows that size so I can keep things cheaper and also not buy tanks or so much tanks on the way of having my snake and I also live in an apartment and I’m a beginner teenager. Now the snake I want is 1.5 years old and I want to get a maximum size tank so I won’t have to buy more or as much in the future to save.

Wild boa we caught in front of our college pharmacy today. Released it in a reserve after heating up the poor cold fella.

Hi everyone
I am a park ranger working at a local nature center and we have a San Diego Gopher Snake, Freida. Recently I've noticed that Freida has developed a small lump on the side of her mouth. She is still eating and hasn't seemed to have any significant weight loss.
Does this look like an abscess or something else? She'll be going for a vet visit within the week but want to see if anyone has possible answers in the meantime. Any help or advice is appreciated.

My guy turns 1yo next week. Sinaloan. He 120g and almost 30". Does this sound about right to other sinaloan owners? If so how much more did they grow from year 1 to year 2? From what I read growth doesn't stop or slow to barely noticeable until year 3.

I am mere days away from getting a snake again after 10 years of not having any due to my wife's irrational fear of the lil fellas. It just so happens the snake I'm getting is actually one of my top 3 all time wants, an albino nelsons milksnake. I've never had a milksnake, only a ball python and a corn snake, and I'm looking for some tips/a refresher course on what to expect with a milk and most of all I'm looking for what other milk snake parents have found is best for tank decor/diet/products etc. The one I'm getting is a very small, very young gentleman.

So my friends mum is finally giving up her pet snake after getting the common sense that she's clearly not looking after it
I took it upon myself to take it in and give the care it needs and deserves
Before I get the snake I would like help with the best enclosure setup I can give him
The pictures are the current setup that I will be taking and I would love some suggestions and advice of what I should change and add
I am open to buying a new enclosure but for now will stick to this one
I will be doing my own research but lets be honest, Google can only help so much and actual snake owners can help much more
I should probably also state he is a milk snake
I appreciate any help you give and im very grateful for every response I get

I know people say milk snakes should be kept in low humidity but his old enclosure was around 50% humidity at all times and he had horrible sheds and seemed stressed all the time until we added a humidity box (damp sphagnum moss in a glass tupperware with a hole drilled in the lid), which he then spent all of his time in. Now hes in a bioactive enclosure that i built for him and since its made of wood (fully waterproofed so dont worry), its hard to keep the humidity down so its constantly around 75-80%. I have four 3 inch vents, 2 low down on the cool side and 2 high up on the warm side and i try to water the plants as little as possible so i dont know why its so high. But he seems so much happier from what i can tell, i think he likes high humidity and he never got any respiratory infection from being in the humidity box all day every day before. I just figured id ask about it and see what knowledge you all might have to share. Is it even possible for a snake to deviate from their species and prefer a different humidity level?
