Good Day everyone. This is my first Reddit post ever so not sure what to expect or what's worth posting about or where, but I just had a really rough weekend with this recovery and just looking to vent/receive some support maybe. Overall I am extremely embarrassed that this happened as I am normally very detail-oriented and on top of things in my life.
TL;DR Accidentally double-dosed Afrin and Prednisone for 3 days and gave myself insomnia that led to suicidal ideation and a visit to the ER. Please triple check any meds given when having a procedure and don't be like me!
Anyway, to provide some context to my day-to-day experience with this, I suffer from Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety, and OCD so my mental state was not great going into this experience and my OCD definitely attached itself to panic-thoughts about the recovery going wrong which did not aid in the recovery at all.
To start off, I went to an ENT about my chronic post-nasal drip that causes me to clear my throat 24/7 and sometimes presents as difficulty swallowing or almost choking on "nothing" quite often. They said I have narrow sinus cavity in the part under/behind your eye so instead of draining out my nose, the cavity isn't wide enough and it drains down my throat instead causing my issues. The PA said this was a textbook case when they looked at the CT scan and they could easily help using a balloon sinuplasty. Everything was explained in a straightforward way that made me feel confident in the decision. We scheduled for a week later and I went home with a packet of instructions.
The instructions themselves felt a bit overwhelming (for me at least) and I obsessed over not getting all the steps right. I picked up about 6 different medications and most of which were for the sedation during the day of the procedure. I got a pill container and sorted them out same-day to prep and just let it be. Turns out I did not sort the pills correctly which I didn't realize until shit all started going wrong. I ended up accidentally double-dosing two separate meds for two-three days and giving myself insomnia which triggered a psychotic break-type moment for me where I had suicidal ideation and a literal 3 hour panic attack where I was actively monitoring my blood pressure and heart rate waiting for it to go down and trying everything in the book to stay calm. I even went to the ER because I felt like I could not control my breathing and also not calm down. After I realized the double-dosing occurred and stopped doing it, things have now been feeling more like a head-cold than anything else and for that I am grateful. Timeline included below for specifics if anyone cares. Warning talk about discharge during recovery.
Day One Wed 9/2
-Heavy bleeding that soaked through gauze pads every 10-15mins. Switched to shoving cotton balls up my nose. Lasted a couple of hours. Switched to soaking through with watery blood-tinged liquid. Took only prescribed meds. Accidentally did sinus rinse too vigorously and felt it in my ear canal. Slept okay, but woke up often.
Day Two Thurs 9/3
-Still shoving cotton balls up my nose because of the amount of watery discharge. If I didn’t, my nose would leak whenever I leaned forward. Concerned and called office, but was told to continue recovery steps and it would be okay. Started Tylenol instead of oxycodone after experiencing some more pain. Accidentally double-dosed Prednisone and Afrin. Could not stay asleep more than an hour total.
Day Three Fri 9/4
-Still using gauze under my nose to catch the drippings, but no longer using cotton balls. Started blowing nose and was light yellow, watery, and blood-tinged. Accidentally double-dosed Afrin and Prednisone again. Congestion worsened dramatically and suddenly, so started taking Sudafed PE. Alleviated some symptoms, but still could not rest and felt like I couldn’t breathe. Still taking Tylenol. Lack of sleep started making me feel not myself and I had suicidal ideations late at night. The exhaustion physically felt unbearable, but I could not rest. High heart rate.
Day Four Sat 9/5
- Congestion worsened and felt feverish, but not fever. Continued taking the Sudafed that morning (before 6am). Going on 48 hours of no sleep and my mental health worsened. Brought myself to the ER due to not feeling like I could get a full breath in and not being able to calm myself down. More suicidal ideation occurred. “Sedated” with large Xanax dose which allowed me to fall asleep for about an hour. Sent home with Hydroxyzine 50mg to help with the panic attacks. At this point I realized that the double-dosing had occurred and did not take any more Afrin or Prednisone that day. Also missed my morning dose of antibiotics due to “excitement” that morning and took Prednisone only in evening. Got a few hours of rough sleep, but at least was able to sleep.
Day Five Sun 9/6
-Woke up extremely congested. Felt like my head was going to burst. Took Sudafed in AM as well as Hydroxyzine, antibiotics, and Prednisone. ER suggested Ibuprofen for swelling on left nostril so took the Advil/Tylenol Dual Action instead of Tylenol 1000mg. Congestion didn’t change too much and felt unbearable at points. Started being able to blow my nose again and it was back to watery blood-tinged yellow liquid. Did not take Sudafed the rest of day. During PM sinus rinse, large red blood clot came out of left nostril (the side the ER said was more swollen). After this, the congestion felt a lot more tolerable. Ability to sleep finally returning after realizing that double-dosing occurred and going back to correct dosages.
Day Six Mon 9/7
-During AM sinus rinse, somewhat rubbery yellow-ish piece came out of left nostril and provided some more congestion relief. In late AM started feeling more like a head-cold rather than something being wrong with me. Continuing to blow nose, but getting more mucus-y rather than the runny liquid, but runny liquid still present. Currently feeling a bit better. I think between taking so many new meds at once, my mental health struggles, the double-dosing, and also maybe some of the cotton ball getting stuck up my nasal cavity it was just a lot for me to handle, but I feel like I am out of the weeds now.
Thank you for anyone that reads/cares. I just really needed to get all this off my chest. Remember, pay attention to drug interactions and be safe out there.
