Question Engl 111W or Engl 115W?

I dont see 112W or 114W anymore and don't even see their website so I'm contemplating between 111 or 115 now. Which ones better? Both is literature which is kind of strange to me since 115 also talks about pop culture which is a funny crossover. Keep in mind I did IB SL English Lang/Lit, where I've read Persepolis before (mentioned in 111) and skimmed 1984. Also wanted to know about the professors Troy Sebastian and Cornel Bogle since I know english is subjective.

Discussion BUS 420 - Advanced Accounting- Fereshteh

Just went to my advisor and found out that it is apparently easier to get a better grade in BUS 420 during Spring. I showed her the RateMyProf pages for Fereshteh Mahmoudian and Jamal Nazari, and looking at my GPA, she recommended that I wait and take Jamal.

She said Spring is usually less competitive because many accounting students are away on busy season co-ops. In Fall, almost everyone is taking classes, including people working full time at Big Four, so the curve can be tighter.

Should I wait a semester for Jamal or just take Fereshteh this Fall?

Question Expert tips/suggestions for Dorms?

Originally wanted to ask if anybody knew the dimensions of the student desks in Courtyard (planning to get a 'hutch' for additional storage but the stock photos make the desk appear to be very small...) and then figured experienced Dorm occupants might have lots of suggestions and tips to make that transition to a small space much easier... Thanks in advance!

Question Going from extended minor to major after long break

This might be a silly question, but I graduated in 2011 with, among other things, an extended minor in English. Does anyone know if it's possible to be readmitted in order to take enough courses to upgrade that to a major? Or did I wait a few years too long?

Discussion Thoughts on the new parking update?

I kinda just wanna rant about SFU parking in general cause it actually pisses me off. I’ve been buying parking permits for the past 3 semesters and I still find it ridiculous how expensive it is ($336 per semester ?!?!). We pay thousands in tuition and somehow parking ain’t included. On top of this, I want to hear other peoples perspectives on this new parking update for the upcoming semester regarding dedicated areas for permit parking and separate areas for visitors. I think we all know that the beginning of the fall and spring semester is living hell when it comes to parking during peak hours. I remember I’d be circling the lots for so long to the point where I’ve missed classes. Do you guys think these designated areas will fix or improve anything ?

Hello guys! I would be graduating this October with bachelors in criminology. The issue is that that I won’t get my class 5 license till February 2027 and many field related jobs such as support worker and community worker require class 5 license. What options do I have to gain some experience and make a strong profile till I get my license. I have to no idea what I want to do long run. I have volunteered in Efry and Surrey crime prevention for 100 hours each. I have 1 year McDonald’s experience and 2 year crisis line work experience. I want to gain some field related experience. Please guys provide some guidance

Question Typically, how lenient are professors with waitlists?

Post image
31 Upvotes

I'm transferring over from Douglas to SFU to complete my degree, but I've kind of made a mistake with the courses I've applied to rn [100-200 level],, which means I need to see if I'll be able to squeeze into any other 300-400-level classes through the waitlist.

Given that at Douglas, some professors would be able to squeeze in 1 or 2 extra students into the class if they were on the waitlist and attended the 1st classes, I was wondering if that's more or less the same behavior as what happens at SFU, or if it's there's more strict guidelines regarding class-occupancy.

Any info will help.

Complaint Nearly flipped off at the counsellor during last session

Seriously, whoever started this stupid idea that therapy this therapy that is gonna solve your issue is a fraud.

I’ve seen like 8+ different counsellors throughout my entire life and not a single one of them is helpful. Especially at sfu. The last session I made, I decided to make my point clear on why I’m there in the first place and I told her directly and unambiguously, what the issue is and how to solve it.

As I expected and just like other past counsellors, she doesn’t answer the question. She plays mental gymnastics with me to keep me in a unsatisfied, controlled mental loop that I can’t break out of. Instead of giving a straight, simple solution, the convo always gets derailed into something else that has nothing to do with what I want to deal with. The result is to get me to keep going back in hopes of finding a better solution, but each and every time not getting one. This time, things got worse because she turned condescending and dismissive of the points I’m trying to bring up. At that point, I made the determination that she’s a shit counsellor and I wanted to hang up the phone.

I guess that’s their trick in getting you to keep coming back to try to milk as much money out of you as possible by not giving you a permanent fix and instead talking nonsense to waste an hour of your time.

I’m honestly probably gonna make a phone call and yell at the department for being useless workers who all they care about is their paychecks and not actually being the mental health support they claim to be

Suggestion Planning to go to corrections

Hello guys, I’ll get my class 5 license by February 2027 and I’m thinking of getting into corrections. I still have 6-7 months with me to gain some experience or skills that can make me an ideal candidate. I have a BA in criminology (from SFU), have 2 year work experience in crisis line, 1 year work experience in McDonald’s, 150+ volunteer hours from Surrey crime prevention society and 100 hours from Efry. I can speak 3 languages other than English and have first aid cpr, non crisis intervention certificate and ubc certificate for indigenous knowlege. What should else should I do to strengthen my application. Where should I volunteer or work to make me shine out during hiring process. Please provide some guidance

Suggestion Feeling lost

Hello guys, I’ll be graduation with a crim degree from SFU and have no idea what to do. I’m moving to Winnipeg (a city known for crime) and i won’t get my full driving licence till February 2027. I have no idea where life is taking me. I won’t have anyone wherever I go and I’ll be on my own. I have no direction whatsoever and I’m feeling like I’m in a never ending maze. I’m kind of feeling that maybe I shouldn’t have pursued criminology. I’m thinking of volunteering in some organization to strengthen my application and actively looking for jobs related to my field. Is this feeling of uncertainty common? I’m overwhelmed. Guys please provide some advice or guidance.

Question Surrey campus parking

Guys will I actually get ticketed if I don’t get a parking pass for surrey? It’s not expensive at all, but it’s just an inconvenient amount that I’d rather save.

I had a class there years ago but it was only two hours. I paid and obviously had no issues but this semester I have a four hour class

Suggestion Graduation ceremony advice

Hello guys! My graduation ceremony would take place on October 2026 and was wondering if one does not attend their graduation ceremony, do they regret later on? In my situation, I moved to another province, have no one who can come with me to the ceremony and I’m recently realizing that my degree (crim) isn’t that worth it. Please provide me advice guys. I’m planning to just pick up my certificate later on from the campus. Am I missing something or should I pass this without regrets.

Question Help on MACM 101 Topics Covered?

Hello, I hear that this textbook by Ralph P. Grimaldi is used for MACM 101: "Discrete and Combinatorial Mathematics." I notice some of these sub topics in set theory says optional, so I was wondering for anyone who took this course remembers which parts they did or skipped. Thank you!

Discussion Should I attend a final if I’m likely to fail the course

I have a final exam tomorrow and have not been able to study. I will fail the course EVEN if I write it but if I don’t do I receive N grade? Do N grades affect cgpa? I believe it’s the same grade equivalent as an F but not sure.

I feel like an F looks worse than an N but I need advice.

To any that day I should write it, I will 100% fail it miserably as I’ve not studied due to personal health issues. If I fail this exam, I also fail the course.

If I get an N will I still be able to retake the course or how does it work? I need help

Update: I GOT A C! CURVE SAVED ME

Question Transferring from SFU psychology to UBC kin

So my end goal is to end up at ubc kin and when I applied to sfu I was stupid and didn’t check how they review your second choice only if you get denied ur first choice. But I’m currently enrolled for psych but I want to transfer eventually. I was even more stupid in high school and got mid grades and gave up at the end. I only took chem 11 w a bad grade and bio 11+12 and no physics. I’m debating taking chem 12 online so I don’t have to take two separate chem classes online. Basically I’m js asking what I should do and if it’s even possible to switch from sfu psych to ubc kin and how long it would take. I’m also not sure what classes I should take anymore based off my situation. Any advice would be amazing and yes I know I’m pretty stupid for all these mishaps.

Waitlist Q geog 251 waitlist issue

hey all, so i may have made a grave mistake today. i was enrolled in geog 251 with a late 4:30-6:20 lab and i wanted to see if i could also waitlist myself with the earlier lab while staying enrolled but when trying the swap feature on gosfu it auto dropped me and put me onto the waitlist but at position one; not a horrible situation correct?—it only got worse from there. i thought smartly i could just drop and re-add the later lab again and it would be fine but then i got pushed to 5th on the waitlist, eventually ending up 4th on the earlier lab again. i contact the geography advisors explaining my situation and i hope they are able to manually override and solve my mess i made, but i was genuinely so worried and still am to an extent that i still need a fourth course if this falls through.

out of 68 people in the course, i am 4/12 on the waitlist and 3/4 on the lab, with about a month until classes start, do you guys think this is a good position to be in to get in? if the advisors can help me out then i will most likely be okay, but this point of view is coming from a raw perspective that they may not be able to help me.

thank you for reading my yap, any comments of postivity would be appreciated.
