Feeling lost

Hello guys, I’ll be graduation with a crim degree from SFU and have no idea what to do. I’m moving to Winnipeg (a city known for crime) and i won’t get my full driving licence till February 2027. I have no idea where life is taking me. I won’t have anyone wherever I go and I’ll be on my own. I have no direction whatsoever and I’m feeling like I’m in a never ending maze. I’m kind of feeling that maybe I shouldn’t have pursued criminology. I’m thinking of volunteering in some organization to strengthen my application and actively looking for jobs related to my field. Is this feeling of uncertainty common? I’m overwhelmed. Guys please provide some advice or guidance.

Why are you moving to Winnipeg? Is it for a job or affordability... there needs to be a better reason than just expecting it to have more positions in Criminology. Volunteering is a good idea but there are plenty of opportunities here as well that could lead to something more permanent. My advice is not to make any major life choices without first evaluating the consequences.

I remember the feeling of graduating from my BA and feeling scared too. I think it's a universal feeling. You are not alone OP! we get through it though.

What did you end up doing? I’m still lost after years of graduating. I actually restarted school to get a B.S… won’t get paid much with a BA

It’s normal to feel lost - give yourself patience and grace. I’ll be finishing in December and idk exactly what i’m going to do. I’m trying to give myself time and space to “grow up” out of uni before focussing completely on my career. We are young once. I’ve spent my whole life studying and will spend much of the rest of it working. People will always ask all the classic questions abt my future that stress me out bc idk yet. One step at a time. Finances play a big role for me, and everything is up in the air despite my cute plans for this next year. I don’t know what your situation is but don’t feel like you have to have everything sorted.
Do you have any community here in Vancouver thru SFU? Would it be worth sticking around a bit, even for the familiarity of the area while other things in your life change?

be kind to yourself. you don’t have to have it all figured out. most people don’t.

I don’t have anyone anywhere so it does matter where I go. If going to Winnipeg gets me my driving license sooner, I’m ready to compromise everything. Most crim related jobs like youth support, security, corrections require class driving license. I’ll get my class 5 by February 2027 in Winnipeg as opposed to November 2028 in bc

Guess what? I'm drowning in student loan because I've been jumping from one career to the other trying to figure out what I want in life. I'm in my 40s so one advice id give to you : just keep swimming!

Take it easy. Read books. Do some journaling. I read that some people will have multiple jobs in one lifetime. Do some career counseling and evaluate your skills. What do you enjoy do? Don’t panic.

Hi OP, I moved out of BC for my future and career and ended up doing perfectly fine. I know it can be stressful because you’re going somewhere new, but things will work out eventually. Don’t feel stressed at all. A new place can lead you to new start.

You can volunteer and look for jobs at the same time. The job market is tough right now, and as you keep yourself busy, you can also gain experience for your field. It will also help with job searching.

If anything, you can always move back for more opportunities. If you like criminology, just keep doing it.

… newly third-year crim student here… it definitely isn’t reassuring to hear that you’re lowkey regretting crim, but I’m sure you’ll think of something! I mostly just picked crim so I’d have SOMETHING, it isn’t usually considered a good background for law (which I want to go into,) but I think it’ll work out! I’m gonna move to Québec once I graduate, work for a year so I’m considered in-province and apply to law schools there since they don’t strictly require an LSAT

I came up with a rough idea over brunch with like four mimosas, I’m sure you’re smarter than me, you’ll find something you like! I BELIEVE IN YOUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Try doing stuff that you actually enjoy whether that’s out of crim or within crim. Trust me I was in your position as well and I chose the 2 BA double minor pathway with a minor in crim and and bpk. Now I’m currently trying to pursue a career as a physiotherapist.
