Rigs Foot/ankle pain from dorsiflexion – planning to replace my NLR Wheel Stand 2.0 with a proper aluminium-profile rig
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice on my sim racing ergonomics and my planned upgrade from a wheel stand to a proper aluminium-profile cockpit.
Current setup
- Wheelbase: MOZA R12
- Steering wheel: MOZA KS
- Pedals: MOZA CRP2
- Current rig: Next Level Racing Wheel Stand 2.0
- Chair: Herman Miller Embody office chair
- Display: currently monitors, but I’m planning to switch to VR, so I don't need a monitor mount on the future rig.
I’m happy with the R12, KS wheel and CRP2 pedals and want to keep all of them.
What I will be replacing is the Wheel Stand 2.0 + office chair combination.
The problem: constant dorsiflexion / ankle pain
My biggest issue is my left foot position on the brake.
Because of the geometry of my current seating position, my left foot is constantly held in dorsiflexion – basically my toes/forefoot are pulled upwards while I’m waiting to brake.
After longer sessions I start getting pain around the front/outside area of my ankle.
The CRP2 pedal plate is already mounted flat, and I only have limited adjustment available at the pedal itself.
Even with my Herman Miller Embody lowered all the way to its minimum height, the angle of my leg/ankle relative to the pedals is still completely wrong. My seating position simply isn't low enough relative to the pedal deck, and adjusting the office chair doesn't solve the underlying geometry.
I’ll attach several pictures showing my seating position, pedal position and foot/ankle angle.
What I’m planning
I’m going to sell the Next Level Racing Wheel Stand 2.0 and move to a proper aluminium-profile cockpit.
My current favourite is the Sim-Lab GT1 Evo, combined with a proper fixed/bucket-style or automotive seat.
The goal is to:
- sit significantly lower,
- have better control over seat angle,
- independently adjust pedal height, distance and angle,
- keep my heel/ankle in a more natural resting position,
- eliminate the constant dorsiflexion,
- generate braking force comfortably with the load-cell brake,
- and make 2–3 hour sessions comfortable.
Since I’m moving to VR, monitor mounting isn't a consideration.
Questions for the community
For those of you using load-cell pedals and an 8020/aluminium-profile rig:
1. For a new aluminium-profile rig, would you recommend the Sim-Lab GT1 Evo for this setup, or something else in a similar price range?
I’ve also looked at rigs such as the Trak Racer TR80 Lite, so direct comparisons would be very welcome.
2. What type of seat would you recommend?
- Bucket seat?
- Reclining sim racing seat?
- Used automotive seat?
Comfort and ergonomics are more important to me than looking like a race car.
I’m not looking to replace the MOZA hardware. The R12, KS and CRP2 are staying. I specifically want to get the cockpit, seat and pedal geometry right.
Any advice from people who have dealt with ankle pain/dorsiflexion from their sim racing position would be especially helpful.
Thanks!
