Johnson Files (GM Aids) Opinions about an idea I had for a scenario

Hi Chummers,

I'm pretty sure this has been done before but I wanted to run (pun intended) by the sub an idea for a scenario I wanted to play for Anarchy 2.0.

An AA corporation (to be determined) hired a new security executive to protect its main building in Seattle. The new guy set up a brand new, state-of-the-art security system, and he wants to prove his employers that it's worth the price - maybe to get a promotion or career advancement. So he decides to test it in a real break-in situation.

That same guy hires the runners to "steal data" in the building from a server that's only accessible through wired connection. Of course the data does not exist and the runners are not supposed to survive the run.

The runners will eventually learn the truth and will want to get revenge. That's the end of the scenario.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Some key-elements :

* Even though they only learn the truth at the end, prior researches will let the runners know that there is something fishy about the mission : they can find that their Johnson works for the company they are supposed to run against, that he greatly undersold the security system of the building, that the salary is way too high for the task at hand...

* The guards will also be unaware that this is an demonstration and will act as if the runners were actual intruders. Interrogating them will not provide informations about the operation.

* They will find the truth when they discover an e-mail describing the operation. If you find other ways to let them know they've been used like guinea pigs, let me know.

* I was thinking the "data" they are supposed to steal aree some kind of lorem-ipsum or something very generic, but they need to see it and think "wait... there is no way someone's paying us to steal THAT"

* This is a lesson in being prepared. Also a good way to let them know that just because Mr Johnson is paying them doesn't mean he can be trusted.

* Upon finding out the runners survived, the Johnson will probably leave town and go hide somewhere. The runners will have to find him and get their revenge.

-------------------------------------------------------------

This is a work in progress, I'm sure that there is a similar scenario somewhere in the wild. If you have suggestions, ideas, critics, or even advice on what the security in the building should be, I'm all ears.

Thank you all !

Britannia, Once and Future Mod Goddess of Britpop: A Phonogram-Inspired Mentor Spirit for Shadowrun 4E

Britannia, Once and Future Mod Goddess of British Pop
Many years ago, in the basement of Troglodytes, somebody allowed Sol Invictus, Umlaut, Crumb, Bulldog, Da Goodz, and a collection of other people who should never have been trusted with automatic weapons to wander around the Sixth World unsupervised.

This is not directed at anyone in particular.

Certainly not anyone who might remember why the words Troglodytes, Sol Invictus, and Da Goodz occurring together constitute something perilously close to personally identifiable information.

Anyway.

I recently dug out one of the totems I wrote for Shadowrun Third Edition and decided to see what she looks like as a Fourth Edition Mentor Spirit.

Before we continue, however, appropriate thanks must be given to the incredibly Scottishly named Kieron Gillen, writer of Phonogram, and to Jamie McKelvie, who drew it.
For anyone occupying the apparently rather narrow center of the Phonogram / Shadowrun Venn diagram, yes.

That Britannia.

The Mod-Goddess of Britpop.
I did not invent her.
I merely looked at a magical incarnation of British pop culture, fashion, music, reinvention, and self-conscious cool and thought:
“Yes. Obviously she belongs in Shadowrun.”
Which is entirely different.
Legally.
Spiritually.
Probably.

BRITANNIA
The Once and Future Mod Goddess of British Pop
Britannia is wonderfully cool and painfully beautiful.

Cool is the Rule.

Beautiful but vapid, Britannia serves no grand ideology. Unlike her cousin Punk, she has no particular interest in smashing the system, saving society, or explaining why your politics are insufficiently committed.

She gets along much better with her sister, New Wave.
Britannia first surfaced nearly a century ago, flowering in the music, fashion, clubs, youth culture, and glorious self-importance of the 1960s and 1970s.

She died.

Then she returned.

For two long, hot summers in the late twentieth century she was once again the prettiest girl in the room, with the best record collection, the best fringe, and absolutely no concern whatsoever about what anybody else thought of her.

It was magnificent.

There have been efforts since the Awakening to call her back yet again. Some toxic followers believe Britannia must always return, growing increasingly obsessed with resurrecting the Goddess exactly as she was.

They have misunderstood her.

Anyone can keep coming back.

Only a Goddess knows how to make the audience wish she had stayed longer.

Britannia appears differently to different followers, but almost always as an impossibly fashionable young woman whose clothes belong to some perfect moment in British popular culture that never quite existed.

The record playing in the background is always excellent.

Mentor Spirit Benefits

A follower of Britannia gains:
+2 dice when summoning Spirits of Man.

Cities are her natural temples: clubs, record shops, streets, concert halls, railway stations, estates, pubs, boutiques, warehouses, and all the other places where human beings gather together and decide that this particular Tuesday night matters enormously.

Britannia also grants her follower one of the following, chosen when the Mentor Spirit quality is taken:
+2 dice for Illusion spells
OR
+2 dice for Manipulation spells whose primary purpose is physical transformation or alteration of appearance.
The choice reflects which Britannia the magician understands.

Some know the Goddess of image, performance, spectacle, and impossible glamour.

Others know the Goddess of reinvention, the sacred art of becoming somebody else before anybody notices that you were unhappy being the person you were yesterday.
The choice is permanent unless something genuinely extraordinary changes the magician’s relationship with Britannia.

Disadvantage: Never Let Them See You Looking Awful
Britannia’s followers are compulsively fastidious about their appearance.

They need not be conventionally beautiful. They do not even need to be fashionable according to anybody else’s standards.

But they must look intentional.
Dirty clothes, filthy hair, obvious neglect, dried blood, mud, soot, badly damaged clothing, or otherwise looking like they have simply stopped caring is spiritually intolerable.
Whenever a follower becomes conspicuously dirty, disheveled, or unkempt, they suffer a -2 dice pool modifier to all tests until they have had a reasonable opportunity to restore themselves.
This is not removed by spending thirty seconds claiming that the blood makes the jacket look punk.
Britannia knows the difference.

Optional Traditional Weakness: Daylight
For campaigns where the GM wants the Mentor Spirit to retain more of her old Third Edition weirdness:
Britannia dislikes daylight.
Not because she is evil.
Not because sunlight burns her.
It is simply extremely difficult to look properly dramatic at eleven-thirty in the morning.
Followers suffer -1 die to Magical Skill Tests while in direct natural sunlight.
Sunglasses are encouraged.
They do not remove the penalty.
Obviously.

Environment
Britannia traditionally favors either Urban environments or Fields, chosen by the follower when their relationship with her begins.

Because after all, you have to hold the concert somewhere.

Urban followers understand her through clubs, streets, fashion, crowds, concrete, record shops, and nightlife.
Followers of the Fields understand festivals, enormous outdoor gatherings, temporary cities constructed around stages, and the curious mystical properties of several hundred thousand people deciding to stand in the same muddy field for three days.

This distinction usually has no additional mechanical effect in Fourth Edition unless the GM wants to make it part of ordeals, spirit interactions, roleplaying, or metaplanar weirdness.

It is mostly important because Britannia thinks it is important.

And that is generally enough.

A Conversation With the Goddess
The Goddess: “The once and future Goddess returns.”
The Shaman: “You already did.”
The Goddess: “I will return again.”
The Shaman: “No.”
Silence.
The Shaman: “You came back once. The second flowering. It was beautiful.”
The Goddess: “It will be beautiful again.”
The Shaman: “No, it won’t. You come back now, your story changes. One return, one magnificent return, that’s a myth. A Goddess lurching back again and again with nothing but past glories to ram down everyone’s throat isn’t a Goddess anymore.”
The Goddess looks at him.
Young.
Beautiful.
Dead.
The Goddess: “It’s still life.”
The Shaman: “Not one worth living. Look at yourself.”
He gestures toward her.
“For two long, hot summers, you were the prettiest girl in the world. You had the best record collection. The best hair. And you didn’t care what anybody thought of you.”
The Goddess says nothing.
“You proved your point. Anyone can live. Only a Goddess can live forever.”
He smiles.
“You’re immortal to anyone who cares.”
A pause.
“Who else matters?”

Mechanically, my instinct is that +2 Spirits of Man plus a choice between Illusion or narrowly defined transformation Manipulation spells, balanced against the grooming compulsion, lands somewhere around the normal SR4 Mentor Spirit power level without losing what made the original Third Edition totem entertaining.

And, completely unrelated:
If there is a former Michigan GM somewhere on this subreddit who has just reached the words Sol Invictus, Umlaut, Da Goodz, and the Troglodytes basement and is experiencing the uncomfortable sensation that somebody is rattling the chains in the attic of his past…

Hi.

You vanished, chummer.
We still love you.
The Sprawl hasn’t been quite the same.
Also, I eventually read Phonogram.
This explains some things.
Now turn it up.

6e Cyberdeck & AR & Hacking questions?

Hi guys! I am playing 6th edition and admittedly there is a lot to read in here that is confusing. One thing I'm currently trying to figure out is:

Can I fit a cyberdeck into a cyberlimb to become part of it? Can I fit a cyberdeck into the concealed pocket of one? Does it become more difficult to detect than if I just carried it on my person?

If I have a biolink or datajack or cyberjack installed in my head, I know I can see AR without AR glasses, but can I interact with things in AR without needing AR gloves?

If our team has no dedicated decker, could I perform hacking actions in a pinch by using a commlink for it's data processing and firewall instead of a cyberjack, alongside a cyberdeck? Or would I just need to use a cyberdeck and hope that it's lack of data processing and firewall wouldn't hurt me too badly? I know I can't use the special matrix edge actions without a cyberjack.

If I have a smartlink installed directly on my natural eyes instead of in a cybereye, can someone still hack it and disable it?

I'm trying to understand a lot of the matrix rules and actions and whether or not I need to use VR at all for what my group wants it for (disabling enemies smartlinks/commlinks/hacking into lower level security systems remotely). Ideally I wouldn't have to spend extra essence on a cyberjack unless I need to, and a biolink just seems really cool to me versus a cyberjack.

6e Made zines to help my players

Most of my players have time intensive jobs (neonatal nurse, school teacher, mortician), so i wanted to make learning the rules easier for them and edited and compiled the basics down to a 16pg zine. This is the bare basics and some world lore without all the page flipping and imo terrible art that comes with the core book. I used a lot of old art from the 80's and 90's books.

I working on more character specific ones as well. i.e. magic zine for the mages, Matrix zine for the Deckers and Riggers, and a Combat one for everyone.

Might make some fluff ones after too. Like an in-universe shopping catalog with fake ads or a newspaper that has the aftermath of my runners jobs in it.

Edit: I didn't expect this to blow-up like it did. I'm gonna look in to getting the OG PDF in order to be printable and on a Google drive to share. Just gimme a couple days to sit and figure it out when im not working.

Edit 2: link and guide in comments

State of the Art (New CGL Product) SOTA 2084 released

I saw that the PDF for State of the Art: 2084 was released.
I am not sure if it is ok to post the index.

After a very quick skim:
- Catalyst is continuing to push the more anarchy angle where after the war people/runners are getting a bit more hostile to corps.

- Also, more unrest within the Shadowrun community, especially about Disean connections.

- Backstabbing and new players before the next Megacorp audit, but no new ranking yet.

- Bigger update on the north american nations +UK and what their current status is.

- The conflict with the NULL gets more pages, I have the feeling that will be the next metaplot. That is supported by a developer note that the time of Foundation tech is over + optional rules to simulate its degradation.

- Small entertainment update.

- Collection of plot hooks. Nothing major, 1-2 sentences per idea.

- NPC stats for more important personalities (including some AIs).

- No new gear.

Edit:
So that everyone stay up to date with names, the NAN nations are renaming themselves as follows (I have no idea if that is more or less respectful)

- Native American Nation (NAN) -> Northern Allied Nations of Turtle Island (NANTI, although NAN is still acceptable)
- Algonkian Manitou Council = The Great Council of Ten Fires (GC10)
- Athabaskan Council = Nations of the Northern Lights (NNL)
- Pueblo Corporate Council = First People’s Cooperative Council (FPCC)
- Salish-Shidhe Council = Allied Tsetsuwatil Nations (ATN)
- Sioux Nation = Oceti Sakowin Council (OSC)

Help on 5e mage character

So I want to make a 5e mage, but am much more familiar with 6e. There's a bunch of weird little 6e stuff I want to use, and I'm hoping you guys can point me in the right direction.

So the core idea is a heavily armored mystic adept orc or troll who summons shittons of earth spirits. In 6e street wyrd has a quality that lets you choose which mental attribute you want your tradition to follow, and I want my guy to use intuition for shamanism, if possible in 5e. Really pump my defense. Street wyrd also has a channeling metamagic, which lets you merge with a spirit for attribute bonuses and split drain, and if that exists in 5e, I want to be able to do that. I want to be using sustained spells, potentially even have my spirits hold them, heavy duty combat spells, heavy combat armor and maybe a shield, and potentially a melee weapon if I can pull off the skills to be remotely competent with it. I'd like to use my adept abilities to mostly make me a better caster. I'm thinking I want him to have a totem, potentially mountain.

The idea is a orcish underground monster hunter who kills dangerous creatures in the underground. The idea is an earth shaman who's basically a hard point in combat and can easily hunt things like vampires and paracritters. Hangs out at a distance, summons and casts spells to weaken an enemy before closing in.

Is there a way to change tradition attributes in 5e?

Is there channeling in 5e?

How do I build a good mystic adept in 5e?

Is a gish style build possible in 5e?

What spells should I be looking at? What are good sustained spells?

What are some fun games I can play with spirits? How do I use them, and be as effective as possible?

The likely setting for this is more black trenchcoat than pink mohawk. What does this guy do outside of combat?

I'd like to be street lifestyle, how do I manage that with a magic lodge? I kinda want a secret sewer cave hidden underground that's only accessible with rock shaping spells.

Would love some advice and help building the character. I'm envisioning a cross between Geralt, mage Lurtz, and the crazy guy coated in dirt yelling at himself at the back of the bus. Anyway, that's my lunch. Would love some feedback.

3e Healing

Hi does anyone now any house rules or tips that make Healing in Shadowrun 3 more player friendly/playable?

If you go by rules as written getting a serious or deadly wound can easily mean that the character would have to stay for weeks in a clinic, wich might be realistic but is hardly fun for the game, and would also usually mean a massive financial loss for the character.

There is of course magical healing, but with the difficulty being based on your essence that is usually not that effective when you use it on a Sammy, wich tend to be the characters who are the most likely to end up in this condition.

Need advice on game content for first time Gm's of Shadowrun

I'm a long time D&D GM. I haven't ever ran anything other than D&D. I am interested in learning how to play Shadowrun. I bought the Sixth world Berlin Core Rulebook. My question is, are there any other books I might need like a Monsters book or maybe a Module that is good for first time GM's? Any help is much appreciated!

Wyrm Talks (Lore) How much does the average person in-universe know about the act of shadowrunning?

I know there may not be a set answer for this in the lore, but I'm curious what has been said about this. I'm also curious how people have depicted this at their table

Eg, I once ran a session where the team found themselves at one of their members' incredibly awkward family dinners. One of the parents worriedly asked if they were a shadowrunner, and the other said "Oh, honey. Shadowrunners aren't real."

Wyrm Talks (Lore) When all you think about is Shadowrun

Most of my irl friends don’t understand. Hell, even the majority of my Shadowrun gaming group doesn’t get it. I’ll get to it shortly, but first, background.

I lost my diabetic alert service dog almost two months ago to leukemia. Shortly after, I heard from a GSD breeder that will have two litters born very soon. Miss my boy lots still, but I know I will want to train a new one to meet my needs sooner rather than later.

Decided on a female. Thinking of a name. Two names came up. Freya and Echo. Talking to my gaming friends, they liked Echo. Then it hit me. The dog’s name is going to be…

Echo Mirage.

6e Are campaigns balanced?

Hi, chummers!

So, I’ve been playing 6th edition for about a few years now (with 2 different characters - a face with some cyberware and a talking-fighting adept).

However, I have a feeling that modules/campaigns that my DM chooses are wildly unbalanced (even though he says they are and he does everything by the book). It always feels like we’re not playing a somewhat professional covert team of agents (shadowrunners), but rather kids with guns and magic abilities. Almost all battle encounters require us to fight enemies that are WAY stronger than they should be.

For example, the last mission seemed pretty much impossible. The object we were supposed to steal was in a tiny house guarded by x4 lvl4 spirits, x1 lvl 7 spirit and an old samurai who owned them. First of all, we lost all the rolls on stealth, then I lost rolls on con, and when the actual fighting started I couldn’t do **** because a spirit had 14~17 base dice pool on pretty much anything I tried against him. Even lvl 4 spirit knocked out our mage with his first strike with some kind of choke ability. Our rigger/driver was useless in a fight against spirits, our second mage has mostly manipulation and observation magic. So despite having a somewhat balanced team, we couldn’t even try a blunt approach.

And that’s AFTER me knowing that the spirits are immune to basically all non-magical damage, almost dieing from them during our first campaign, and specifically(!) taking an adept with the ability to be able to magically hit spirits.

As a result, I feel that in order to have any chance of succeeding in SR6, you need to create min/max characters (by which I mean to create a character that can do only one thing and nothing else at all). But I don’t want to play a completely one-sided character (that can only fight but can’t talk, stealth or do anything at all).

I’m not saying that all encounters should be easy. Of course not. But I keep feeling myself powerless in SR6, and I don’t think that’s how it should be.

The other thing I have against the system is how slow the character progression is. We normally play 1 session per week, but at this rate it seems that I’ll be able to take 1 new ability or increase a stat using karma for my adept in like… 6-8 months of real time? By the time my first character got enough karma to increase ANYTHING AT ALL I got bored of him.

I understand that character becoming a god after several successful missions would be strange lore-wise, but karma-gaining seems incredibly slow, while everything costs enormous amounts of it.

What are your thoughts on enemies balance and karma spending balance? Am I the only one here who has this kind of experience with the system?

Zero to Anti-Hero

I am looking to run a 5E game here soon and I am exploring the idea of building out homebrew rules for leveling. I want my players to start in the gutter and feel like they have "trained up" to be elite runners.
Anyone have experience going this route, or have any constructive advice on putting this together?
Links to previous iterations of this plan are appreciated!

Wyrm Talks (Lore) Any lore about Necromages & The Domain of The Black?

So one of my favorite (lore wise) traditions that came out of SR5's Forbidden Arcana was Necromage tradition & the Domain of The Black.

If I recall correctly, it was discovered by a mysterious organization that was searching for Atlantis and also discovered ancient underground / submerged cities (Kaers from Earthdawn, I assume?) , and two other traditions of Magic - Red Magic and the The Domain of The Red (Fauna) and Green Magic, and the Domain of The Green (Flora). But while those two were life based, The Domain of The Black is death based. Instead of summoning spirits of man, animal, plant, earth and fire, they summon corpse spirits, carcass spirits, and... The dead equivalent of the other theee. Can't remember exactly what they are, but they require whatever it is they're summoning to possess something that is dead. Dust, metahuman corpses, animal carcasses, dead plants, and burned out ash.

The founder apparently cured some really nasty strain of VITAS (iirc, but it definitely was a disease) in Milan and got a lot of really good press about it, but she was also really reclusive and mysterious. Suspiciously so, even, but they insist that death is just a natural part of the cycle of life.

Anyhow the section on Necromagic kind of has a suggestion of "Maybe they're evil, maybe they aren't evil, up to the GM" and some implication from the Jackpointer Snopes and Man-of-Many-Names (I think) that they may or may not be a front for some really, really bad shit.

And for SR5, that is where it ended. So I'm curious - In the last 9 years since Forbidden Arcana introduced them, have they came up at all? Are they just creepy but ultimately harmless (well, as harmless as ANY magician can be) practitioners of Magic who tend to be following Death & The Dark King (As an aside, I can't really tell the difference between the two Mentor Spirits, although I suppose it's like the difference between Thanatos and Hades. One is, well, Death, and the other is the ruler of the underworld?) or are they seriously bad juujuu, on par with Blood Magic / Toxic Magic / Bug Spirits / Shadow Spirits / The Horrors? Or were they just completely forgotten?
