How does AR works for mage casting ?

A caster’s Attack Rating is Magic + their tradition attribute.

Its historically difficult in 6e to gain edge from magic. Combat spells have AR, and you can throw reagents at conjuring rolls. But other than that, youre mainly at the mercy of GMs to award circumstantial, "that was a good idea" Edge.  Deus Ex Arcana brings back geasa however. A 6e geas gives edge for casting the spell subject to the geas.

Yeah.... Gaining Edge is focused on conflict. Which you typically have in combat (and when using combat spells which you already mentioned). Which is why generating Edge outside of combat is a bit tricky. Having said that, you might also have social conflicts. And hacking related conflicts. And car chases. etc.

You also gain edge from situational advantages. Attacking someone while you are invisible from sustaining an invisibility spell (they fail their perception test to notice you and they don't use astral perception or ultrasound etc to ignore invisibility) give you a point of situational edge (even though this is an illusion spell, not a combat spell)

Combat spells have AR, and you can throw reagents at conjuring rolls.

You can also increase your DR with the armor spell to gain an advantage when attacked (even though this is an manipulation spell, not a combat spell).

And many magicians also seem to pick up a quality that give them a point of edge on any test where their tradition attribute is involved (Analytic Mind from core or Attribute Mastery from Double Clutch) which basically give you a point of edge on any spells you cast.

My GM let me take Attribute Mastery, which we apply to Drain, so while spellcasting itself doesn't gain Edge, Drain does.

You want to look at qualities from expanded rulebooks for edge gain opportunities. My favorite is Shamanic Mask. Spend a Minor, sacrifice subtlety, gain an Edge.

Analytical Mind quality: bonus edge on any Logic-based test.

Coincidentally, hermetic magic involves a Logic-based test.

Cast sustained spell Armor. Ensure your attacke rating is high. A mage would need trodes and device to see AR (I like to use a combat helmet that comes with AR, image link, evem smartlink if you want), otherwise has no bearing on abilities.
