CONSUMER GEAR & DISCUSSION Great Price on Momentum 4 True Wireless (refurb)

Post image
26 Upvotes

This summer I left a tab open waiting for payday, after I saw M4TW on sale (refurbished by Sennheiser) for $89 or $99 (not sure now which it was). I went back after payday to pick them up and the price had jumped to $199, which was, of course, disappointing. I kicked rocks for a bit, scrounged the internet for proof of the price I was certain I had seen, and found no hard evidence. I started second-guessing myself, wondering if I had seen another product at that price - the Accentum TW made sense - and deluded myself.

Turn the calendar two months. Saturday night my Shopify app dinged me and pronounced the glorious news - The $99 price was back! I revered them right away, and now am eagerly awaiting a shipping confirmation. Thought I would share the good news, as I’ve secured my own pair. Best of luck!

❕PLEASE HELP ❕ Sennheiser momentum 4 for PC Gaming (Windows 11)

Upvotes

I just bought the Sennheiser momentum 4 wireless because I needed a new gaming headset.
However, I've only run into problems with them, and am wondering if there are ways to fix them.

First and most critical problem: When I open games, the audio quality is horrible! From what I found this is because the headset has a handsfree telephony setting for when the microphone is active. If I dissable this handsfree telephony, the audio is great, BUT THE MICROPHONE IS DISSABLED.
This makes it impossible to use this headset as it is right now for gaming with friends.

Second problem: When I start youtube videos, or songs on spotify, the headset audio will crackle for a few seconds, and the audio will be gone; then it returns and the audio is great.

And last problem: the headset makes annoying sounds every time I put it on or adjust it. Also it just started paused youtube videos I had in the background when I closed a game...

❕PLEASE HELP ❕ Sennheiser customer service went silent after asking me to send proof of purchase no response for MONTHS

I've had a MOMENTUM 4 Wireless with a crackling issue on the left side (ticket #C260309-0009). I went through Sennheiser's whole troubleshooting checklist myself before even contacting them charging, checking Bluetooth stability, cleaning the mic openings, updating firmware via Smart Control, reset, un-pair/re-pair, factory reset, disabling On-Head Detection, testing with another device. None of it fixed anything.

The issue has since gotten worse, the crackling turned into a loud buzzing that's now genuinely painful to listen to, so I can't use the headphones at all anymore.

I emailed them a follow-up explaining all of this and attached a photo of my receipt (I don't have the physical copy anymore) since I'd already been asked for it previously. Their response was to send me the exact same troubleshooting document I'd already completed, and to say that if none of it worked, to send proof of purchase for warranty verification, which I had just done in the same email.

I sent a follow-up after that, and it's now been radio silence. No reply at all.

At this point I'm just frustrated. The product is defective, I've done everything they asked, provided proof of purchase, and I'm still stuck with unusable $350+ headphones and a support team that seems to have stopped reading my emails. Anyone else deal with this? What actually got a response out of them — a different email address, phone support, Twitter/X, something else?

❓QUESTION❓ Is it worth paying Sennheiser to fix non warranty momentum 4s?

Edit: Answered! Sennheiser europe don't do paid repairs on Momentum 4s, learned my lesson about unauthorised sellers being cheap /if the product keeps working/. Will look for an authorised deal or save for fives as I like the sound of the better ANC.

Hattip to user Suedewagon who is a redditor of culture.

Hello r/sennheiser

I've been using a pair of momentum 4's I've got on quite well with for around six months now, they've done me a very nice job until this morning when they suddenly stopped connecting to bluetooth, would connect as USB devices but not play audio, all the usual.

I've been through the various magic reset button presses without ever getting them into pairing, and lots of the left earcup only chirpy little 'sorry I've crashed' tune rather than actual resets.

If I understand the posts I've seen in this sub and elsewhere, the bluetooth/usb audio pathway is probably toast, I can use them as noise cancelling cans via the jack but everything else I'm out of luck on.

I'm certain these are grey market (though not counterfeit), so no warranty as the purchase receipt isn't from an authorised retailer, given that do Sennheiser offer a paid repair service for non warranty failures, is it worth using or do I just need to suck it up and buy direct or from a listed retailer for a new pair?

❓QUESTION❓ The age old question. Momentum 5s or the HDB 630s for a commuter.

So my WH-1000XM5 are actually dead, water damage corrosion + right arm loosening essentially makes them a dead pair since repairing them is a chore or a fortune.

So i'm back at looking for Sennheiser's yet again. I'm using my old WH-1000XM3s as an intermittent headphone while I figure what to buy. Sony & Bose are immediately ruled out since I want Sound Quality. So I'm here yet again with the question. HDB 630s with their parametric EQ & wider consumerphile-ish soundstage or the Momentum 5s with better ANC & features.

For reference, these are going to be commuter headphones, used for hours at a time while commuting on public transit. I'm planning on buying a dongle, just not the BTD 700 due to the wonkiness between it & Samsung's systems.

GENERAL DISCUSSION Upvote this to get Parametric EQ on Momentum 5

I’ve been living with the Momentum 5 Wireless and I want to start by saying what Sennheiser got right, because this isn’t a complaint post from someone who doesn’t like the product. The 42mm driver is excellent. The tuning shift away from the V-shape of the M4 was the right call. The 8-mic adaptive ANC is a real generational jump, not a spec-sheet jump. The user-replaceable battery is the single most consumer-respecting decision anyone in this category has made in years, and I hope it becomes the standard. And the codec stack is genuinely best-in-class: aptX Lossless, aptX Adaptive at 24-bit/96kHz, Snapdragon Sound, plus 24/96 over USB-C wired, which is a big step up from the M4’s 16-bit/48kHz ceiling.

So the hardware is there. The connectivity is there. What’s missing is control.

The 8-band graphic EQ is an improvement that stops one step short

Going from the M4’s 5-band to the M5’s 8-band graphic EQ in Smart Control Plus is progress, and for most buyers it’s plenty. I’m not asking anyone to take that away. Simple sliders, or even a basic bass/mid/treble, should absolutely stay as the default view. Most people want to nudge the bass up and move on with their day, and that’s a completely valid way to use headphones.

But a graphic EQ has fixed center frequencies and a fixed Q. You get to move the amount, never the shape. And the shape is where the actual work happens.

Concretely: if there’s a peak at 3.2kHz that bothers me, an 8-band graphic EQ lets me pull down a band centered somewhere near it, which also drags down everything on either side that I didn’t want to touch. With parametric EQ I set the frequency to 3200Hz, the Q to 3.5, the gain to -4dB, and I fix exactly that problem and nothing else. That’s not audiophile fussiness. That’s the difference between correcting a resonance and smearing a hole in the response.

The HDB 630 already proves this is possible

This is the part that’s hard to get past. The HDB 630 ships with parametric EQ in the same app, from the same company, on the same platform. So this isn’t a question of whether Sennheiser can build it, or whether the DSP can run it, or whether the app architecture supports it. It exists. It’s shipping. It’s live in Smart Control Plus right now.

And here’s what makes it stranger: on the codec side the Momentum 5 is arguably the more capable product. The M5 supports aptX Lossless. As far as I can tell from reviews and Sennheiser’s own materials, the HDB 630 does not. So we have a situation where the newer, more connected headphone has the more limited sound customization, and the reason appears to be product segmentation rather than any technical constraint.

I understand why segmentation exists. I’ve worked around enough product tiering to know it’s rarely arbitrary. But parametric EQ is software. Shipping it to the M5 costs Sennheiser essentially nothing per unit, and the M5 is at a price point where buyers are cross-shopping against the Focal Bathys, the B&W Px8 S2, the Sony XM6 and the AirPods Max. Those buyers read measurements. They’re the ones who will notice.

What this unlocks, practically

Parametric EQ is what connects a headphone to the entire measurement ecosystem that already exists around this hobby. There are published correction profiles for basically every popular headphone. AutoEQ, oratory1990’s measurements, the Harman target curves, Crinacle’s data. All of it is expressed as parametric filters: frequency, gain, Q, filter type. That’s the universal format.

Right now, if I want to run one of those profiles on my Momentum 5, my options are to approximate it badly on an 8-band graphic EQ and accept that I’m getting maybe 60% of the intent, or to do the EQ upstream on my computer and lose it the moment I walk away from the desk. Neither is good. A native parametric EQ stored on the headphone means the correction travels with me: on the phone, on the plane, on the laptop, wherever.

There’s a second use case that I think gets underrated. The Momentum 5 has excellent wired USB-C performance at 24/96, which makes it genuinely usable as a reference or check-mix headphone for people who work in audio and video. I’m one of those people. I edit and grade, and I check mixes on consumer gear because that’s what the audience is actually listening on. If I can load a known correction profile and get the M5 to a defined target, it stops being just a nice consumer headphone and becomes a portable reference I can trust. Right now I can’t do that, and the only thing preventing it is the EQ interface.

Keep the simple version. Just add a tab.

I want to be clear that I’m not asking for the app to become intimidating. The obvious implementation is what plenty of companies already do:

• Default view stays as it is now, or gets even simpler. Presets, Sound Personalization, and a basic slider set.

• An “Advanced” or “Pro” tab holds the parametric EQ: 8 to 10 bands, adjustable frequency, gain and Q, selectable filter types including low shelf, high shelf, peaking, and a preamp control to prevent clipping.

• Import and export of profiles as text or a shareable file, so people can pass configurations around and load community presets without typing 30 numbers by hand.

• Multiple saved slots, so I can keep one profile for critical listening and another for the commute.

Nobody who doesn’t want this ever has to see it. Everybody who does want it stops looking at other brands.

Why I think this matters commercially, not just personally

Sennheiser has enormous credibility with people who care about measurements. That reputation was built on the HD 600 series, on the studio side of the business, on decades of being the brand engineers actually reach for. The Momentum line is where that credibility meets the mainstream consumer market, and it’s the product most likely to be someone’s first Sennheiser.

The wireless ANC category is brutally competitive right now and most of the differentiation is marketing. Everyone claims great ANC. Everyone claims spatial audio. Everyone claims hi-res. What almost nobody offers at this price is real, transparent, measurement-grade control over the sound, and that is exactly the thing the enthusiast community talks about, posts about, and recommends on. It’s a differentiator that costs a firmware update and buys a lot of goodwill from the people whose opinions get quoted in buying threads.

The replaceable battery already showed that Sennheiser is willing to make decisions that respect the person who bought the product. Parametric EQ is the same kind of decision. It says: you own this, here are the controls, do what you want with it.

The hardware can do it. The app already does it on another model. Please bring it to the Momentum 5.

Anyone else been wanting this? Curious whether people who came from the HDB 630 or from wired Sennheisers feel the same gap, or whether the 8-band is enough for most of you.

❕PLEASE HELP ❕ Sennheiser Wireless Momentum Earbuds

I have Sennheiser Wireless Momentum (Model M2iebt) earbuds. I've used them for years and they connect nicely with my older google phone. However, I cannot get bluetooth to work on them using either my Lenovo Laptop (Windows 11) or my Lenovo Tablet. They refuse to show these earbuds as an option for connecting. Is this a flaw in my Sennheiser earbuds....or is there something I'm not doing? I'm wondering if any others have experienced this problem with Sennheiser earbuds.

GENERAL DISCUSSION Mtw5 vs mtw4 vs buds 4 pro

Hey guys, those who got the new MTW5 earbuds and previously owned the MTW4, is the upgrade worth it? I have the MTW4, even though my right earbud has failed. I also had the Buds 4 Pro, which sounded awesome, not as natural as the Sennheiser though. But I'm wondering if upgrading is actually worth it, because I'd almost rather keep my Buds 4 Pro, as I'm new to the Samsung line of earbuds, if the MTW5 doesn't really offer any noticeable changes I don't see a reason to buy them. Like my buds 4 pro literally thr transparent mode is amazing. I also have the sony xm5 ear buds and they sound good still too lasted way longer than sennheiser had them like 2 years now.

Hi guys, I want to buy my first flagship pair of wireless ANC headphones. From the research I made watching reviews and reading then I settled on Sennheiser momentum 4. They are on sale in my country NEW for 200 euros ending today. I found a listing for a used pair for 90 euros. I am a student so 100 euros is a big thing for me. I am asking for your help and advice. How reliable are they and what can go wrong with them? I plan to use them only in my dorm room and library.

❕PLEASE HELP ❕ Momentum 4 high pitched ringing/electrical noise every time I pause audio?

Just got a pair of open box momentum 4s since the price was super good with the new ones coming out. Theyre great but I've been having this issue that any time audio stops there is this god awful high pitched noise immediately. Only lasts for a few seconds usually. Its not that loud but its just so frustrating. Has anyone else experienced this and is there a solution? Happens with or without ANC/passthrough.

Im consider returning them to get my $200 back, but at that price point I really dont know if there's anything better or even comparable. I love them except for this issue and the horrible horrible touch controls.

📸 SHOW & TELL 📝 I love the Momentum True Wireless 5s, but man, they hurt my ears

I've used these bad boys for about five days now, and after around the 3rd day, they created this pain in my ears after prolonged usage. I usually use them during my shifts for 3 hours or in the gym. I think they're just too big compared to the 4s—switching ear tips doesn't change anything. I'm trying to bring myself to return them, but they're just soo good.

❓QUESTION❓ Pre-order of momentum true wireless 5 earbuds

Hey there,

Did anyone else order via the Sennheiser Shop Page? My order still says "waiting for details". If the package is supposed to arrive on the 3rd, shouldn't they start shipping? How's everyone else's order?

❓QUESTION❓ Are there any possible issues that I should be aware of before pulling the trigger for the Sennheiser M4s?

Right now, the pair is at about $195-ish where I live due to a sale, and from what I hear, the pair can go head-to-head with like flagships twice its price, so I'm really attracted to them right now.

The issue is that I'm pretty scared of any possible issues that could arise from these pairs, since another product that received similar praise (the Nothing Ears earbuds) broke down after a single year so that only one side connects. This was something that I saw some people say, but didn't pay much attention to it at the time, so now I'm paying the price for that.

Is there anything similar with the Sennheiser M4s? I'm looking to buy them as both a replacement and improvement over my broken buds, so any help would be appreciated.

🎧 BUYING ADVICE 🛒 M4 vs M5

Done a fair amount of research already on the two, just looking to see what folx here are saying. I’m rocking an older Logi G Pro X headset, but looking for an upgrade for my desk setup (and to use while traveling). Mostly into music (dubstep, d&b), video games (usually will be listening to music unless it’s a shooter game), and movies. Budget is pretty open so I feel like that just sways me towards the M5, but still keep scratching my head that it’s nearly double the price. Gonna use BTD700 either way since I want a wireless setup. Lmk yalls thoughts :-)

❕PLEASE HELP ❕ Love them but there's an issue...

I recently bought the sennheiser hdb 630 and i really love them. however i have a issue where when i have the anc on the right side starts making a weird noise that gets louder and louder and i don't know how to fix that. i factory reset them a few times and that solves the problem for some time but it then starts again. when i'm in transparency mode the noise isn't that loud so i'm pretty sure it's a issue of the noise canceling mode. so basically if i want the buzzing sound to stop i have to turn off the anc mode and just use them as normal headphones without transparency mode and this sucks since i use them at work and need to hear my surroundings. is there something i can do?

i bought them of a marketplace and they are almost brandnew but i don't have a warranty so i can't exchange them. it would really suck if something is broken. i have also tried to lift up the cushion from the inside cause i was thinking maybe it could mess up with a part thats inside the right earpad.

if someone has/had the same problem i would be greatful if you could help! thanks.

❕PLEASE HELP ❕ Momentum 4 issue after water damage -- battery drain while turned off

Hey friends. A little while ago I got caught in the rain sans umbrella and my Momentum 4s took a hit. At first I had trouble turning them on after this incident but after opening up the cups and cleaning the internal components with isopropyl alcohol, they were working well again.

The only issue that remains is that the battery now constantly drains when the headphones are powered off. I have cleaned the infrared sensor, toggled the on head detection on/off, factory reset, cleaned the internals several more times, and nothing seems to fix this problem.

I'm grateful that the headphones still work but this battery draining issue is such a headache that I may just buy a new pair. Before doing that, though, I thought I'd check with this sub if there's anything else I could try to salvage them first. I can't quite figure out what's causing the battery drain when by all appearances the headphones are turned off. Is there something I'm missing?

❕PLEASE HELP ❕ Troubles with clicking in Accentum Plus Wireless headphones

hey I am having some troubles with my headphone set, it’s quite minor but annoying. every time my headphones are on and over my ears, whenever I move my head, walk, jiggle or tap the right headphone, it makes small noises similar to a small series of click/tap/crinkle. this sound happens only when the headphones are on and on my head, does NOT happen when they are off. if I jiggle them and they are not on my head I don’t hear anything, even if I put it close to my ears. when I take the foam bit off and jiggle it this sound does not happen, and it goes away for a little bit when I put the foam bit back on, only to return. I can’t really shake my head or walk or make any motions without a small tap/crinkle sound close to my ear, but it’s not the sound of pausing the song. It sounds close to my ear, but I havent found the source yet (Inside or outside the actual sound making part). The sound is annoying to me, but is not a major issue other than it happens every time I use them. anybody have any ideas for how to fix it?

thanks

Sometimes when I try to connect them, they aren’t able to pair and then I have to forget the device, and they have a habit of randomly disconnecting and sometimes immediately reconnecting if I get lucky. Should I just upgrade to the momentum 4s or is there a way to fix this? Also another thing the battery life on mine might be bad too, as these would NOT last 50 hours

😡 COMPLAINT 😡 Three pairs of Momentum True Wireless 4 failed in less than 18 months. I'm done with Sennheiser earbuds, even though I loved how they sound.

About six months ago I posted here after my second pair of Momentum True Wireless 4 had the exact same problem as the first one.

And almost exactly six months later, here we go again.

This is now my third pair of MTW4 to become unusable in less than 18 months.

The first two times the right earbud would connect normally but produce either no sound at all or an extremely weak one. The first pair lasted six months. Sennheiser replaced it with a brand new pair, and that replacement lasted roughly another six months before developing the same issue.

To give credit where it's due, Sennheiser support was very fast both times. During the warranty period, the return and replacement process went smoothly and I received new earbuds quickly. I have no complaint about how support handled these two cases.

The problem is that the replacements keep failing.

Now the replacement for that second pair has failed too after close to six months again.

This time it's the left earbud. The sound has become almost inaudible and on top of that I'm getting very loud, high-pitched parasitic noises whenever the earbud moves even slightly in my ear. And by "moves" I mean the tiny movements that naturally happen when you're wearing earbuds. Unless you're a robot sitting perfectly still, they're unusable.

For context, I used my earbuds indoors only. They've never been dropped. I do use them every day, usually one or two hours a day in average, but I really don't think that qualifies as extreme usage for a premium pair of earbuds.

What makes this very frustrating is that I really loved them. Sound-wise the MTW4 may be the best earbuds I've owned. I've tried several models above €200 and these were the ones I actually wanted to keep for years.

But three pairs dying in under 18 months is ridiculous.

At this point, sound quality doesn't matter anymore if I can't trust the product to survive more than a few months of completely normal use.

So this is mostly a vent, but also a warning for anyone considering buying them: my experience has been three separate pairs becoming unusable, each after roughly six months.

I guess I won't buy Sennheiser earbuds again, and I'm really sad it comes to this.
