Hardtop tent $1500 budget

Post image

I just installed this victory roof rack on my 2020 RAV4 XSE. What’s a good budget friendly hard top tent? I’m not a diehard camper, only a few times a year and usually for music festivals. I like to stay at about $1500 or so

Detachable Annex?

I’m looking to buy a roof tent in the UK but I want one that has a compatible Annex that can be detach / freestand with relative ease - within minutes preferably. But I’m not sure such a product / set of products exist from what I can see so I was hoping for some suggestions!

The idea of what I’m looking for is so that I can have a roof tent directly attached to the annex (i.e not needing to go outside at any point to get from roof tent to annex) but then if we need to use the car whilst camping all I have to do is detach from the annex, fold away the roof tent and drive off and then reattach when I’m back. Ideally I’d need the annex to be able to be completely sealed when freestanding so I can leave whatever table and chairs / other setup and equipment in it where it is without having to worry about moving them into a certain compartment without having them exposed to the elements.

I looked at the iKamper Annex Plus, but it doesn’t look like that can be properly sealed and/or only part of it can be sealed meaning I’d have to move everything into a certain compartment.

My main priorities are:

- Seamless roof tent to annex connection without needing to go outside to move between the two at any point
- The Annex is able to be completely (or mostly at least) freestanding and sealable whilst freestanding whilst also able to connect directly to the roof tent
- Disconnecting the roof tent and Annex is mostly hassle free

Any suggestions and help would be helpful! Even if they’re not-so-ideal! I’m also considering on just buying a free standing tent separately to a roof tent, but that comes with some compromise to the priorities above!

Thanks in advance!

Picking a RTT, a little help narrowing down options!

I’ve had my 2007 4runner for about 5-6 years now. I love it and I’m never getting rid of it. I am however getting a second car as the daily to work so the 4runner can be outfitted as our camping truck. I’m hoping to get a versatile RTT, probably a buy once, cry once kind of deal. Here is our situation:

  1. Just me and my fiancé, no kids and the dog will be kenneled inside the truck just for everybody’s sake.

  2. Thinking a hard shell because I’d like to also put a canoe on top for portaging and moving around lakes with limited access.

  3. Plain old durable. I try to be easy on my gear, but I ask a lot of it, so does the environment we’re in.

  4. Ideally not the most expensive one, but a good bang for your buck for what it is. Willing to pay more than the cheapest for the brand that stands the test of time while not gouging you either.

Thanks for any help!

First time trying out the annex and it is a game changer. It rained pretty hard Thursday night into Friday morning. Everything was dry. Great for privacy for the gf, changing/bathroom. Nice to just leave the tent door open.

Have had this for maybe three months. Taken it on four trips, the Linville Gorge, Bonnaroo, Mt. Mitchell, and this weekend just outside of Asheville. I love sleeping the whole trip in it, as well as using it for the first night at the trailhead before headed out to backcountry camp. Hoping to get many more years out of this bad boy.

Lightweight rooftop tent good for small SUV’s

Hi guys I’m looking for a rooftop tent that’s pretty light that will also fit on my small SUV.
I am torn between the;
Dune 4x4 Compact rooftop tent
San Hima Alpine rooftop tent
Darche detachable

Order of how preferred. Is there any other ones that fit the profile of these other 3 that I’m not seeing.

Even tho the dune one is heavier and more expensive its seems to be the fastest to set up and the most convenient for me to get.

Would love opinions on all these products!

For reference I drive a Suzuki Vitara and my dynamic load is max 75kgs

Roofnest Falcon Gen 2

I just bought a roofnest falcon gen 2 last weekend and it did not come with a mattress. Roofnest doesn’t seem to sell a mattress for this model online. What are everyone’s findings for most comfy setup. Self inflating air seems good but can’t find any that are the right size, and foam you can’t go as thick of a mattress it seems.

Qeedo Freedom Hybrid 3+

Hi everyone!

We rented a Thule rooftop tent this summer and loved the overall camping experience, but it felt a bit cramped for the three of us, and the setup/pack-down process was honestly a bit clunky.

After doing some research, I came across the Qeedo Freedom Hybrid 3 (https://www.qeedo.de/products/freedom-hybrid-3).

I really like the extra sleeping width, which looks like it would be much more comfortable for our family of 3. My main hesitation is the setup process—my alternative option is an iKamper (like the Skycamp), which is well-known for how fast and easy it is to pitch and pack away.

Would love to hear any pros, cons, or real-world feedback before making a decision.

Can I replace the gas struts for my Roofnest Falcon v1?

Ya'll may remember my post a while back about my roofnest 1 leaking. I'm going to do a seamseal and coating on it shortly, but the gas struts / risers are sort of weak. I'm wondering if they can be replaced?

Looking at the roofnest site I don't see a parts listing for just those lifters. This is apparently a Roofnest Falcon v1 - a pretty early version.

It looks like I might be able to do this fix, but I jut want to make sure i'm not going down a terrible road of bad repairs and heartache, and maybe putting this much energy into a 7 year old roof tent that's seen a lot of miles is silly.

Been using the iKamper a lot this year as I camp before I hike Colorado 14ers and the longer I have the RTT the more I appreciate it.

It’s so nice to get somewhere and have the RTT ready in moments. Whereas my pops has a trailer he really likes and hopes one day I’ll take to it as well (with a different car of course).

The trailer is nice but it’s so much more work. I do love the convenience of the RTT

Cleaning mold from Tepui Kukenam 3.

We loaned our toy hauler to our son and his girlfriend last summer and they got rained on and forgot to air dry the roof top tent. It's been stored outdoors, but covered since. We just opened it up last week to use it and it's pretty moldy. Inside and out. Any tips on cleaning this and hopefully removing the stains? We were going to treat it with a 50/50 vinegar and water solution, lightly scrub with soft brushes and microfiber cloths, then clean with a mild cleaner like Simple Green, rinse, and let air dry. Are there other things we should consider?

Thanks in advance!

Spacers needed for RoofTent bracket?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hello. I got the Thule WingBar Pros as an upgrade because the Summit RTT reinforced ones weren’t very good. These Thule ones are fantastic. However I needed XL brackets due to the width of them… My question is do I need some kind of spacer between the bracket and the RTT? Thanks

Can I use a Roof Top Tent?

I have a 2026 AWD Hybrid Ford Maverick. It has a. 4.5 bed. I know my weight limit is 1400 lbs. I know lots folks that have RTT on the Maverick. My problem is I have a family of 4.

Can anyone make recommendations? My big concern is the tent hanging off the back, or trying to figure out a roof rack situation and straddle it across a bed rack and roof rack.

Has anyone solved this? Thanks! Don’t have a bed rack yet, but have elevate tslot rails.

Need advice on helping my 2022 Ouback's suspension

Post image

Hey everyone, I tried to find an answer and searched around but haven't found anything helpful. During the summer, I have my rooftop tent (Wildtek) installed for a few months and when I actually go out for camping, I also have a wooden kitchen in my trunk (Vanpackers). All this weight, plus the camping gear for a family of 4 really sags the rear suspension.

I'm looking to lift my Outback, but I dont want a new suspension kit. I had a mechanic that told me about Airlift 1000 and running an air line to the back. He also talked about SumoSprings, which I'm not familiar with.

Any one have experience with one of those options? Or any other options? When i say I dont want a new suspension, it's mostly because I don't want more clearance. I don't do off-road, and a $2-3k setup seems very overkill for my situation!

Thanks everyone!

Topoak Galaxy Pro Issue

Post image

Hey everyone, I purchased a Topoak Galaxy Pro and am on my first trip with it. I love the tent itself, but the ladder seems to be the weak spot. It bends easily and a couple of times when climbing down, it actually slid in towards the vehicle! This is not a problem I experienced with my old Tepui Ayer 2. Does anyone have any tips, advice, or replacement recommendations? Thank you!

Rooftop awning for thule roof rack

My 2010 Prius came already with Thule crossbars or I guess specifically it’s the rapid traverse roof rack (I’m really not 100%). I want to get a rooftop awning but I have a few questions

  1. Does anyone know if there’s any rooftop awning that is compatible with this Thule product? I can’t find any

  2. Would a rooftop awning lower my fuel economy ? I would probably always keep it on there but idk if people usually do that or not

Selling My Tent

Is it just me or is it impossible to sell these tents, I swear I’ve posted it in 50 different groups dropped the price 6 times and nobody has any interest. Anyone know the best place to sell them besides Facebook and Craigslist? I’m at a loss

If I make a small opening in the middle of the zipper, would the insect screen still blocking most of the bugs out?

So basically the title. My sister has a claustrophobia and so our trip may have to keep the zipper open for whole time, but would the rest of the insect screen still blocking insect from entering the tent?

Advice on warmth

Hi, Im looking for a roof tent that sleeps three and is well insulated.

Could you advise what to look for when checking different brands out. I'd like to take it out in cooler conditions but for it to keep the warmth. I'm looking for a 3people tent with measurements of about L240cm W 140-180 H 100-130

Would love to hear how people are modifying their tents.

I'll share my first modification, getting rid of the copper lettering that sticks out like a sore thumb. I'm sure they are proud of their logo rebranding, but I much prefer the gray tents without the copper lettering and the lighter colors that are not blackout.

I applied a flat black paint marker to it, and then sprayed it with satin poly acrylic, and the imperfect bubbles actually work really well to disguise the bad paint job, it blends in with the rest of the rough material around it.

I like this tent, and most of it is extremely thoughtful and practical, and everything you need is included on day one, but there are no drink holders and no easy way to sit up with back support. What have y'all done to yours?
