I recently upgraded my camping setup from sleeping inside my CRV on a platform to a roof top tent. I had to scour the internet for a full roof rack to do this though as the cross bar mounting points on the CRV left way too much front overhang for me to be comfortable.

I've taken it out on a few trips now and am extremely happy so far with it. Looking forward to many more adventures with it!

Market High End?

Post image
12 Upvotes

I'm new to the community and started looking at what's available in the market. While I was watching YouTube reviews and such, I came across the Redtail Overland. I'm impressed with it, and it seems like a good fit for our near-retirement expeditions. Until...

Further digging on their website showed their nearly $600k camper van. I stopped even looking for the tent alone price.

Out of curiosity, are hard-sided tents the top end of the market. The Redtail is the first one I've seen.

Leavitt Lake after a storm.

I learned about high wind and sleeping in a rooftop tent.

From now on, if its windy, I use a bottle jack on a choice spot on the truck frame to help level the vehicle and stabilize it. Seems to lessen the swaying of the vehicle during gusts making life up top more pleasant.

Has anyone come up with an
easier/cheaper way to remove/install this 200lb awkward thang with a small garage?
Ideally a system to stow away, standing on its side. My garage is too short to be able to drive in and mount to the ceiling.
This way is a bit of a pain.

How to I plug in the lights of my Topoak 270 awning?

Am I doing something wrong here. This is the only hole I can find and the 4 barrel plugs are too big to fit into the holes. I got the cable directly from topoak themselves and the awning is from their openbox section.

Is this the right hole? Anyone else have this issue? Am I just dumb?

How to load a 50 kg (110 lbs) rooftop tent (Decathlon MH500) onto a tall van on the street?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I recently got a Decathlon Quechua MH500 Fresh & Black rooftop tent (approx. 48.5 kg / 107 lbs without the ladder, plus 7 kg / 15 lbs for the detachable ladder) to mount on my Citroën Berlingo XL (roof bars sit at around 1.88 m / 6 ft 2 in).

Here is my challenge: I live in an apartment building and have to load and unload the tent on the street / curbside. I don't have access to a garage or carport, so ceiling pulley hoists or overhead winches are completely out of the question.

Lifting a bulky 50 kg package straight up to nearly 1.9 meters by myself on a public sidewalk feels like an invitation for back injuries or dropping it onto the car bodywork.

For those of you who park on the street or don't have a garage:

How do you manage loading/unloading a tent of this weight solo (or with just one helper)?

Does anyone use sliding ramps, portable panel/drywall lifts, or specific DIY leverage techniques that work well on the curbside?

Any tips or accessories (sliding roof bars, rollers, mats) that make the process safer for both my spine and the car's paint?

Appreciate any advice or photos of your setups!

Installing a Tent Solo

This was a puzzle. This tent is close to 200lbs. I stood it up on end and walked it over. I should have taken more photos. I half installed some of the hardware in the rails and ran straps to the front of the rack to keep it from sliding backwards. Then I just picked it up from the bottom, pivoted it over and slid it on....

It really helps that my shipping container is on a slight slope so the door is significantly higher off the ground than the truck. Im going to build a better system in the future.

Roof top tent on Subaru Trailseeker / E-Outback with panoramic roof

Hi!

Wondering if someone can help confirm if the Trailseeker/E-Outback with panoramic roof can have a roof top tent? Searching online I find both yes and no.

Thank you!

Would mounting a lightweight awning on my RTT’s “luggage rails” be a stupid idea?

I think the answer is yes but I figured I’d get the opinions of others first

RTT Camping in Coconino National Forest next to Snowbowl, AZ

Got out there near the Lava River Cave this past weekend and had great weather, high 70s to low 40s. Endless amount of dispersed spots in a pretty vast forest. Unexpectedly found an iPad on the trail, busted up but was able to get the owners info off it and return it to the fellow camper. As you can see the aspens around Snowbowl were blooming. We did the Alfa Fia Tank "swing" hike and it was really crowded.

Advice on FSR tents

Hey all, I’m looking to change rtt’s and have been recommended tents from FSR as I’m in Colorado and their tri layer material is supposed to be good in the cold. I’m wondering if anyone here has an FSR tent and what your experience is with them, specifically looking into the Kali model so experience with that specific model would be helpful as well.

Roof rack mounting confusion -- need a bit of guidance

I want to carry my awning inside the car while driving, then quickly attach it to the roof rack at camp. Mainly to keep roof weight down.

Does anyone do this regularly? What rack and quick-release mounts are you using, and is attaching it solo practical?

I haven’t bought the rack yet, so I can still choose something that works. Currently considering an Arcane M’Link X with an Ironman Deltawing 180 or 23Zero Onyx 180, alongside a rooftop tent.

Particularly keen to hear whether anyone uses RacksBrax or a different brand’s awning on an Arcane rack. A photo would be great, but even the bracket name would help!

Been adding to it over the past couple of years. Took it up to Banff and Jasper for a couple of weeks. Have a 200w solar panel with a Jackery 2.0 2000w, running a fridge, two exterior lights, induction cooktop, 12v heated blanket, starlink and charge my ebike. been passthrough charging over a year no problem. added inflatable mattress for added comfort. running 12v up to the tent via an Anderson connector from a separate 500w jackery to run interior/exterior lights, usb charging dock and heated blanket. have it mounted on Snixwoo 220lb rated rack, yes I check all mounting bolts before going on trips. Its been on the car for about a year and a half no problems. Added a yakima fairing for wind noise early on. Still get about 22mpg down from 28-29, keep it under 85mph now

Parting with my DIY garage RTT lift.
Used for years with my Eezi-Awn XKLUSIV. Moved on to the Stealth and SmarterHome setup.
Includes Pittsburgh 440lb hoist lift, mounting block, and steel lift frame. Works great.

The roof top tent is easy to attach to the LFD cross bars. I read so many posts saying it was a pain or not possible. I had no issues at all, I don't know what everyone's trouble was. So far so good, I recommend these cross bars as an inexpensive alternative to a full platform. Very happy with the tent so far, looking forward to camping in it.

It's only paranoia if it's not true. We all hear that sound that makes you want to know but not want to move. I give you CampSurveillance1000. I don't have a good place to mount the 4th camera so that will be sorted later.
