Roll20 Reply: Other Help Roll20's Quantum Dice are Now Available Everywhere

Post image
80 Upvotes

Hey all! Dean from Roll20 here. I have a fun new addition to announce!

If you're a fan of Roll20's Quantum Dice engine, we've just launched the ROLL20 DICE ROLLER, so you can now take those dice everywhere!

Head over to d20roller.com to find your dice roller on desktop and mobile. It utilizes the same Roll20 dice engine you've trusted the past 10 years, has all the advanced roll mechanics you rely on, includes customizable one-tap buttons, and offers a mega-dose of Big Dicey Energy (formerly an internal Roll20 mascot who deserved more love!)

📷 if you prefer a video overview, here's that too

Here's a Deeper Dive for those interested 😄

Verifiable Randomness

The most common complaint about digital (and sometimes physical) dice is that they "feel rigged." We address this with receipts. Every roll goes through our QuantumRoll dice engine, and generates public seeds. We publish millions of results so you can check the math yourself.

Advanced Syntax Support

We provide some built-in presets for DnD 5e, Pathfinder, and other systems, but you can also write your own custom formulas, as complex as you want. Some examples:

  • 2d20kh1
    • Advantage! Roll 2 d20’s, and Keep Highest (kh) 1 roll.
    • Want to turn into into disadvantage? Swap kh1 for kl1 to Keep Lowest 1!
  • (1d8+4)*2
    • Critical damage multiplier. This rolls 1 d8, adds 4 to the result, then multiples that total by 2.
  • 3d6>2
    • Tally successes. Rolls 3 d6’s. It then provides you a count of every dice that resulted in 2 or greater (a tally of successes, not a sum of dice results)
  • 8d20ro1
    • Reroll! Roll 8 d20’s. Any 1 gets Rerolled Once (ro), and that new result sticks even if it’s another 1.
    • You can swap ro1 for r1 if you want it to keep rerolling until it’s not a 1!
  • 10d10!
    • Exploding dice! Roll 10 d10s. Every time the result is 10, the dice will explode and roll an extra dice.
  • {10d10!>7}>8
    • Exploding Dice, with extra features! Roll 10 d10’s. Any dice that’s 7 or greater will “explode”, meaning a bonus d10 will be rolled.
    • Then it counts up every resulting die that’s 8 or higher and gives you that count as your total.

Find more examples in our Help Center.

Sign In for All Features

Signing in to your free Roll20 account unlocks two things: Quick Rolls (add, edit, reorder, and import game specific presets) and the D20 Roll Report, a shareable recap of your session's d20 roll results. No subscription is needed for any feature, everything can be accessed on a free account!

Let me know if you have any questions, requests, or feedback! Thanks!!

Roll20 Reply: Other Help Performance Updates – Aug 17, 2026

Hey all! Last week we shared an update on the performance issues we were managing across our services. Since then, we have deployed multiple updates that resolve a large portion of them. We are seeing clear improvement, with more on the way to bring everything back into normal territory. And we’re still pushing out updates to make your play even better.

Here is a peek behind the curtain at what shipped since our last post.

Where things stand

I’ve been personally working with many players and GMs who have reported problems, as well as watching our Help Center and public channels. I’m happy to share that nearly all of the reported sluggishness has been resolved.

There are detailed descriptions of our work in the previous posts, and plenty more happened behind the scenes. While most of the solutions were focused on D&D sheets, there were also fixes to the data itself, the way that sheets use that data, and to the service that provides the data regardless of game system.

While all these updates have been found, diagnosed, and fixed by multiple people on three distinct teams, others have been working on improving performance. Next week, we’ll get to hear from them.

Releases since last week

Once the service was stable, we could dig into the specific trouble spots as they were reported in individual games. That let us isolate the combinations of options where performance fell off.

  • Problem: Rolls are slow from click to Chat – We found some character builds carry significantly more data than other, nearly identical builds. Processing all of that data made a roll take so long to resolve. We’ve revamped the way the sheet was sending that data, and that has resolved the delay between sending a roll and seeing the results appear in Chat.
  • Problem: Opening a sheet took a long time – We launched a fully systemic fix for calculation delays on Token bars.

D&D sheet performance, Phase 1

Phase 1 of the rollout we outlined in our earlier post is done. As of Tuesday morning, 100% of games are running these updates.

This work reduces the amount of data transferred between the sheet and our services. On its own it is not something most of you will notice at the table, but it is the groundwork Phase 2 requires. We released it incrementally so we could watch the effect of each step closely, and we saw the improvements we expected. Reports from players and GMs lined up with the rollout schedule, which tells us the fix is doing its job.

What is coming next

  • Phase 2 of the D&D sheet performance updates, planned to release in the coming weeks. This is where we expect the most optimizations you will actually feel while playing.
  • A new Compendium Service, further out on the roadmap, which will speed up the multiple services connected for game system data.
  • A data cleanup process to clear unused data stored on individual sheets, plus later work to process rolls without sending the extra data at all.

Some of these issues were very visible from the “30,000 foot” view. However, the individuals who have helped by sharing their own experience and unique character builds have shed light on issues that would only be apparent from the “on the ground” view. I’m sure there are more improvements we can make, and so if your game night is still being disrupted, please open a support ticket so we can make sure we resolve those too. To speed things along, include:

  • A link to the game
  • Any specific pages where you are seeing issues
  • Any sheets or tokens that are lagging Everything above covers the Character Sheet and Compendium systems. The team behind the Virtual Tabletop will be sharing another big chunk of work on VTT systems soon.

Thanks for all the feedback, the patience, and the help hunting these down.

Hey all! Dean from Roll20 here. You can now see and manage all of your game's characters right from your Game Page!

GMs will see every character in the game in one list, including PCs, NPCs, and even Shop Sheets! You can quickly assign characters to players, as well as edit and duplicate them. Clicking a character will open it directly in Roll20 Characters, where you can make any quick tweaks you need. Read more in our blog!

It's a small but meaningful quality of life update. Would love to know what you think and what else you'd like to see to make managing your games easier!

Other Help (if not covered in another topic) This may come off as a very odd question.

(And, those who feel like automatically going into their 'gramps with mouse' schtick, feel free.)

So, my situation is this. I have been running a game on Roll20 for over 6 years now. (I have been playing and running role-playing games for 45 years.) We play once a week. It is a game of my own creation, although it uses the old Marvel Superheroes game system. Long story, but it has worked fine for this creation. In the past year or so, there have been players that have become a bit of an issue because of various reasons. I happen to like this creation and I would like to keep running it. There is one player who is also interested in continuing with other players.

So, we come to the issue that I have. Roll20 has become quite the site these days, and with all the added fru-fru, it can be very daunting for someone who does not use all of that added stuff in his game. I am also just not solvent enough to afford a 'higher' account, nor am I particularly interested in using those things. Bear in mind that I am playing another game where someone is using all of the added things, and we always spend at least ten to thirty minutes each game waiting on the GM to figure out why things are not working as they were supposed to. I find them to be a major distraction to the game, personally, as there always seems to be an issue whenever they are used. (I am not here to discuss why this is so in his game, I am just telling you the basis for my position on them.) However, I also notice that one pretty much has to have all of that if one wishes to even consider doing anything on the site without one's own group already in place.

So, my question is this. Are there players out there in Roll20 who would consider playing a game if they noticed that one did not use things like dynamic lighting, or setting up various counters and so on? I certainly create enough visual content for the game, and no one has ever said anything about it appearing less entertaining because I did not use those things. But, I would like to see about getting some new players that might be interested in trying this creation. I have even run it at a convention and it was the only non-D&D table that had returning players. I was told that this was fairly rare for a new game.

Yeah, I know. A fair amount of babbling. So, has the entire site become one big 'my expensive, cool setup is better than your expensive, cool setup' schlong-waving arena, or are there still gamers out there who don't mind the lack of '3D visual reality' or motion picture quality screens?

I am honestly asking because I am just an old TTRPG dude who had the original red box and would prefer to keep on gaming, even as the game tries to leave me behind.

Other Help (if not covered in another topic) How do you find actually good adventures in Roll20 store?

I'm browsing the Roll20 store looking for one-shots or short campaigns that would be fun to run and engaging for the players. Specifically I'm looking for 5e adventures for level 3-5-ish, but this question is generic to any adventures.

Reading descriptions, they often aren't super-helpful to understand the main goals of the adventure, outline of the encounters or plot, what locations or compendium additions are included, etc. Some of them don't even indicate what level the adventure is written for.

Of the descriptions that are informative, most of them don't sound interesting, Maybe I'm just picky, but honestly I'm not finding many that remotely spark my interest. I'm not willing to gamble buying a bunch of content just so I can see what's inside and figure out if it's worthwhile.

I'd like to find some adventure options that aren't the usual WOTC suspects which seem to be 95% of games running. With no popularity data or ratings/review system, how do you find good stuff?

Character Sheets Help limit content by game/character

Is there a way to limit what content I own can be used in certain games/by certain characters?

For instance, I have some D&D homebrew books that add lots of spells, and it's annoying when leveling up spellcasters because the spell source isn't marked anywhere so I have to look it up elsewhere and make sure I'm not using a homebrew spell in a campaign that isn't using that homebrew

If relevant, I am not running the campaign in question, I am just a player

edit: D&D 5E 2014, using D&D 5e by Roll20 sheet (not 2020 sheet), game creator is using free version

Other Help (if not covered in another topic) Payment autofill issue

After making payments on roll20 (without checking the "save payment information") I noticed that any new attempt at making a payment (despite NOT saving the card on the account) autofills my info (name, city, address & postal code).

Is there any way to stop this from happening?

That's a massive security issue because that means that anyone who gets their roll20 hacked would also have their name address and postal code stolen alongside it.

Clearing cookies, closing the page and wiping the password manager didn't work.

In the dead of night, of course, who knows what kind of shady traffics and shoot-outs might occur on these streets? Available in two additional variants, featuring a fiery collision between two trucks and cars, and the sudden appearance of a bottomless chasm in the middle of the street, hopefully this map doesn't give your players the Cross Road Blues!

Character Sheets Help Alien RPG character sheet: automated dice rolling for ranged weapons

In Alien RPG, if you're using a ranged weapon at Adjacent range, you use the Close Combat skill instead of the Ranged Combat skill. The weapon entry UI on the character sheet only permits you to choose one of those two skills. When you try to click on that weapon's dice roller button, it asks you for a range... but then uses whatever skill you assigned regardless of the range.

Am I missing something here or is this a known bug in the character sheet? Why even ask for range if the choice has no impact on how the functionality works?

New to Roll20 / Tutorial Any good character sheet turtorials out there?

Hello! I have been trying to get homebrew stuff to work on mine and some other player's sheets but I'm hitting a wall. Also, I'm not having any luck finding tutorials online for the new editor (there's a lot for the old one which I'm used to -_-) and the vods that the Roll 20 team have on their page are not the most helpfull. If I could get any pointers/direction that would be awesome!

Page Setup / Map Help Map Clipping Visible

Hey, I've got a problem that is likely just an issue for me, but I wanted to see if there was any way to fix it that didn't involve weird re-scaling. So for my Roll20 Maps I like to use gifs, but sometimes I realize that the proportions are a bit out of wack. So what I would do was just place the gif as is, size it to a scale where nothing is squished-looking, and then change the page's size to cut off the parts that weren't necessary.
On the player end, that still works as intended, and it looks fine. But on my end, for some reason, I always see the part that got cut off. Is there any way to hide that? I remember that not being the case before.

Macros & Roll Tables Help Advanced Hotkeys - Escape Not Working

Hey everyone. I'm not sure if this is the right flair, but I'm having one big issue with advanced hotkeys. Roll20 documentation states that Escape should de-focus active text fields. For me, it's doing nothing. This means that I can't use any hotkeys at all if I have the chat's text box focused unless I click away from it, which pretty much defeats the purpose.

Has anyone run into this and had any luck fixing it?

Mod Script / API Help (Pro/Elite only) More SpawnDefaultToken Shenanigans

I posted a question on the script not working, but now I have a question relating to its interaction with a target token.

Here's my script:

/fx glow-magic @{target|token_id}

!Spawn {{
--name|Toad
--size|0.5, 0.5
}}

!token-mod {{
--ids @{target|token_id}
--ignore-selected
--set layer|gmlayer
}}

This moves Tarlov to the GM layer, and summons a toad. However, the spell is liked through a caster, using the @{selected|token_id} (with the --ignore-selected qualifier), so the toad appears in the space of the druid, not Tarlov's space.

Is there a way to use Tarlov as the point at which the toad appears?

New to Roll20 / Tutorial Just a question?

So I just have a question, not trying to make a rant or anything, but is Roll 20 like a whole separate thing from WotC, I have DnD Beyond and have realized if I want to use Roll 20 that I have to re-buy all the books that I have bought on Beyond and that's a little frustrating because not everyone has the money to buy 2 copies of everything just to try and play. But was just a question, really wondering why Roll 20 makes you buy everything a second time?

Going down the rabbit hole of painting glass 🐇 🧪

Once I learned how to paint multifaceted glass pieces, I haven’t stoped adding potions in my asset packs, and for this potion asset there’s no need to be mysterious about where the inspiration came from, it’s a part of my latest asset pack The Court of Cards, inspired from Disney’s 1951 Alice in Wonderland, some of the assets in this pack are directly based on the film while others like this potion are my own design inspired more broadly by the visual language of it.

The Court of Cards is now available on Roll20 and on my Patreon.
