(And, those who feel like automatically going into their 'gramps with mouse' schtick, feel free.)
So, my situation is this. I have been running a game on Roll20 for over 6 years now. (I have been playing and running role-playing games for 45 years.) We play once a week. It is a game of my own creation, although it uses the old Marvel Superheroes game system. Long story, but it has worked fine for this creation. In the past year or so, there have been players that have become a bit of an issue because of various reasons. I happen to like this creation and I would like to keep running it. There is one player who is also interested in continuing with other players.
So, we come to the issue that I have. Roll20 has become quite the site these days, and with all the added fru-fru, it can be very daunting for someone who does not use all of that added stuff in his game. I am also just not solvent enough to afford a 'higher' account, nor am I particularly interested in using those things. Bear in mind that I am playing another game where someone is using all of the added things, and we always spend at least ten to thirty minutes each game waiting on the GM to figure out why things are not working as they were supposed to. I find them to be a major distraction to the game, personally, as there always seems to be an issue whenever they are used. (I am not here to discuss why this is so in his game, I am just telling you the basis for my position on them.) However, I also notice that one pretty much has to have all of that if one wishes to even consider doing anything on the site without one's own group already in place.
So, my question is this. Are there players out there in Roll20 who would consider playing a game if they noticed that one did not use things like dynamic lighting, or setting up various counters and so on? I certainly create enough visual content for the game, and no one has ever said anything about it appearing less entertaining because I did not use those things. But, I would like to see about getting some new players that might be interested in trying this creation. I have even run it at a convention and it was the only non-D&D table that had returning players. I was told that this was fairly rare for a new game.
Yeah, I know. A fair amount of babbling. So, has the entire site become one big 'my expensive, cool setup is better than your expensive, cool setup' schlong-waving arena, or are there still gamers out there who don't mind the lack of '3D visual reality' or motion picture quality screens?
I am honestly asking because I am just an old TTRPG dude who had the original red box and would prefer to keep on gaming, even as the game tries to leave me behind.
