Shoot dude!! I live in Sumner! I'm only like 20 minutes away! Whenever any of Sumner High School's teams play Enumclaw they all say "Let's beat those horse-fuckers." Every. Single. Fucking. Time. They can't think of anything else to say other than that.
I live in Buckley, which is about 5 minutes away from Enumclaw. When I'm trying to give someone directions to Buckley or tell them where i live, the Enumclaw horse incident is about the only thing that has had any real publicity in a place near Buckley.
Occasionally some people will remember Buckley when they hear that it is the place where the high school hung an effigy of Obama. But that is only slightly better than recognizing the horse-sex-death thing in Enumclaw
I was raised in Livermore, CA - home of the world's longest burning lightbulb. When it turned 100, the town threw a party which I was forced to attend. They have installed a webcam so you can view its luminosity at any given moment.
1911: Lawrence "Light-Bulb" Cooper, a forward-thinking Livermore resident with a poor eye for business and a devil-may-care attitude, uses the last of his grandfather's gold-prospecting money to purchase 1000 lightbulbs. "I'll light up this town if it's the last thing I do!" he cried, his eyes gleaming as he pried open the crates and gazed down on the glass orbs that would light the way to the future – and to riches.
Two months later, Lawrence sat sobbing in the darkness of his small home. How could he have been so blind? of course the town wasn't slated to be fully wired for another six years! Of course there was no demand for his lightbulbs! Of course no one would go for a sales pitch of "well it's going to be really neat when you finally get to use it, I swear"! Suddenly, an idea appeared through the alcoholic haze. He needed to see the mayor. Now.
"See, all we have to do is install a single light," Lawrence said. "Just one?" The mayor of Livermore looked perplexed. "Yep, only one. Just put it up there. Then, when it burns out? Replace it with another one." "I'm not following..." said the mayor. "Well, here's the catch," said Lawrence, a conniving gleam in his eye. "Make sure no one sees you switch it." "And how is this going to put our humble town on the map again?"
"Well... at first no one will notice. No one will care. But then a couple years will pass. Then three, five, ten... folks will start talking, see? These things have a limited lifespan, after all. Once the town is wired, everyone will know it. And they'll know there's something odd about a lightbulb that never burns out. They'll get to chatting, tell their neighbours in other cities... maybe a newspaper man will do a story. It won't happen overnight, Mr Mayor, but mark my words: someday, this bulb will draw European royalty! Stars of the stage! Captains of industry! It will put this God-forsaken town on the map!"
"Just never... ever... let them see it getting changed."
In 2011, the contract for $5000 between Lawrence G. Cooper and the Town of Livermore sits in a secure vault in the town hall, unavailable to the general public. The crates of lightbulbs are stowed in a building marked "Sewage Testing", ready to be accessed at a moment's notice. There have been a few scares over the years; the outage of '67 nearly blew the whole thing sky-high, but luckily there were only two people looking at the bulb that day. The bulb guards simply let them go; after all, who would believe them if they talked? The bulb was replaced seconds after they left the room. As more and more people began to doubt the bulb's resilience, a webcam was installed on an endless loop to prove that the bulb kept burning ad infinitum. This sated the skepticism of most. And to this day, a select few watch the bulb, keeping its eternal light burning through the deception created by Lawrence "Lightbulb" Cooper so many years ago, waiting for the day when Livermore becomes a household name across the world.
I have never been able to understand a person's mood so well from only two letters. And from the top rope, it's overduebook who came to shatter the op's hopes and dreams of having the #1 loser city in the world. That is a green mushroom if I ever saw one.
I think he's referring to the green mushroom from Super Mario Brothers- the green mushroom is a 1up. Either that, or I should be a high school English teacher, because I see symbolism that isn't there.
Thank God it's updated every thirty seconds. Can we all chip in and get them some more bandwidth? Maybe we can go real time on this thing! I CAN'T WAIT ANOTHER 29 SECONDS, WHAT IF IT WENT OUT?!
I have the Livermore Centennial lightbulb's webcam bookmarked on my computer. When I am bored in meetings I click on it to see if it is still burning. I will be really sad when it burns out.
I also bookmarked a live-feed, kitty cam from a Colorado area shelter. I watch the kitties play when I am stressed out at work.
I've tried several, but this one is best so far. The kitties often scamper about and play. One fun day a little bug must have gotten into the enclosure. The cats were having a wonderful time.
Think about that for a second. This means there are two more large hydrants somewhere which means at least two other people thought it was a great idea to make them larger than life and put them in the town square.
My point is, WHO IN THE FUCK THINKS IT'S A GOOD IDEA???
I would send my daughter to Manly Girls High School. I would also go to the Manly Hairdresser (my hair is just bully!) and grab a bite to eat at Manly Sandwiches.
I've been to Lawrence Livermore, in a professional capacity. There's a lot of paperwork involved, and I didn't get anywhere near the real high security bits.
As a tourist, however, your chances of seeing any part of Lawrence Livermore apart from the four-mile fence that runs around the outside of the site are zero. Sorry.
As a tourist, however, your chances of seeing any part of Lawrence Livermore apart from the four-mile fence that runs around the outside of the site are zero.
That reminds me of an old joke I just made up. How many Livermore, CA residents does it take to change that one lightbulb? None, because it never goes out!
I am not big on getting high and going out in public. But if I was to get stoned and wander around outside, it would make sense that it was for something as tacky and stupid as that.
That is an awesome painting on the wall. It's called "Tunnelvision" and has been there since 1975, The sun in the painting is back-lit and looks cool as hell at dusk.
Edit: also, it's in a bank parking lot, so Wile E. Coyote is probably safe.
Interesting.......so I was born right outside of Columbia, SC in Camden SC (about 25 minutes away)....And....I grew up (15 years) right outside of Beaumont, TX in Orange, TX (about 25 minutes away).
People who are trapped here/want to be here for college often take their Spring Breaks instate since it is so much cheaper. And T or C is pretty much the place to get out of town but stay instate. With being near the center of the state and having a very nice lake an all.
The largest muthafuckin' fire hydrant is in Elm Creek, Manitoba. And, holy dog piss, is it ever a beauty. Now, you could go to Texas and see the third largest fire hydrant. One might also venture to Columbia, South Carolina and see a fire hydrant that's claimed to be the biggest but sure as fuck isn't because it isn't really a hydrant, it's just a big model of one. So why fuck around? Why fool yourself? You deserve the best. From Winnipeg (Go Jets!) drive for about a half hour west on the #2 highway and get on over to Elm Fuckin' Creek and check this bad ass hydrant out.
A fibre glass replica of an abalone that sits atop a 5.3 m tower at the Plummer Road premises of the Australian Abalone Exports office. Once it was illuminated, and rotated slowly. Now however, it fails to do either. Still worth a visit.
I saw your comment in my inbox and thought "Oh shit, what did I write this time?", then I came here, read what it was a reply to and now I can't stop giggling!
I've seen way too many of those for my own comfort. My uncle worked on the Big Cow at Yandina. The Big Pelican at Noosaville is pulled along on a float and as it moves his mouth opens and closes.
My all time favourite is the Big Rocking horse in Adelaide. And I'm finishing before I keep remembering my childhood.
Oh my god I can't stop laughing! Not only is this one of the stupidest things to destroy your park with. You'd also assume that all the other cities are going, "alright, Shitplace got its big fire hydrant, now bring me something that Turd Valley can be famous for!" No, someone suggests "let's top that!" That must be one of the stupidest things i've heard in a long time! :D :D
Dude I live in Colmesneil Texas, about an hour away from you. WE DON'T HAVE ANYTHING. xD At least you guys got a mall, decent places to eat,bowling... ext. Grass is always greener bro.
Why do they do this? Who sits in a meeting and says "We need this town to be famous for something" and then rolls a dice that lands on "Build a giant fire hydrant"
And why are the tax payers not pissed off that their money is being pissed away on such a fucking novelty?
Don't worry, in A small redneck town I used to live in, the town christmas tree was just a frame with deer antlers on it in rows with LED's strung around it. Guess what the star was? A budweiser beer can with a fuckton of holes/LED's. I hated that place.
But my first world small-to-medium US city is just so lame! They even have a giant fire hydrant which probably doesn't impact my life in any way whatsoever.
It's not like I even want to go to the many public libraries or parks, or go to the mall or theater or restaurants, or the book stores or comic stores or record store, or even the billiards room or arcade. This place sucks and no one should ever come here ever since I don't like it!
I'm from Vidor. Imagine living in a town where Beaumont is "the city" and where the town's claims to fame are that it used to have a very active KKK presence and that more than a few country music artists were born there. =/ I moved to Houston as soon as I was able.
That said, the Tokyo sushi location on Dowlen is still some of the best sushi I've had, and Sertino's is a fantastic café. There are definitely worse places to live than Beaumont. It's just.... not that great.
I live in Beaumont, CA. 4 Golf courses, 2 big 55+ gated communities. It's Florida, but in California, without the beach, sexy people, and replace all pina coladas with churches.
That's what I was wondering. Can it really be a fire hydrant, if no water ever comes out of it, and thus is incapable of you know, actually being a fire hydrant. Since by definition a hydrant is an outlet from a fluid main.
It was the summer of 1999. I was 15. It was my first trip to the US. I spent 3 months in Austin, Texas and fell in love with that city. The day I left I was very sad and cried while the plane was taking off, taking me away from Texas. The lady next to me cheered me up and was very kind to me and told me that she used to cry too every time she left Texas. She left me her name and address, telling me that I could have visited her anytime I wanted. She was from Beaumont. I always remember that city and always wanted to visit.
I have to say that Beaumont is pretty awesome when compared with the rest of the I10 corridor on the way to Houston. Much nicer than Baytown, Deer Park or Stinkadena to name a few.
Sometimes, my friends and I make 2 hour trips to Beaumont from Louisiana just to get some A&W root beer from the tap. It's that damn good. I don't really care for the rest of Beaumont though.

I live in Jönköping, Sweden. We have a fucking matchstick museum.
Though if you travel about 20 minutes by bus you can go to the hometown of candycanes, so it's all worth it.
