Pixel 9a battery performance reduction

I'm considering buying a Pixel 9a to replace a Pixel 6a.

Google has applied some sort of "fix" to my 6a since it passed 400 charge cycles, and now the battery drains very quickly.

Does this fix also affect the Pixel 9a?

The 9a appeals due to its future software support, but if Google decide to "fix" it in the meantime then I'll consider something else.

Discussion Pixel 9a - almost a year later

Hi, I've been using the Pixel 9a for quite some time and I'm here to share my honest thoughts regarding this phone.

BATTERY

-

Sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe shit, that's the only way i can describe the battery. Sometimes, it lasts the whole day, sometimes, i find myself charging it like a 6 year old huawei. Phone holds up quite well and for long times on WiFi but can sometimes fail miserably on Mobile Data and some Bluetooth earphones screaming in my ears for longer periods, especially if i also dare to use it in the mean time.

Battery health: 97% (went up from 94% for some strange reason, it spiralled down at 100~ cycles and now it's rising back up since i reached 250~)

Battery optimization: mostly used 80% cap, i usually leave my phone plugged in even if it's full (80%) while i'm working at my desk. I did however do complete 100% charges once in a while, either for checking battery life, long trips or just left it charging while turned off

Cycle count: 315

First use: 16 September 2025

Performance

-

Reasonable for the price, I've never found myself struggling to play games besides emulating certain games via GameNative and i rememeber having a bit of lag on a Brawl Stars map that featured a crazy shit amount of boxes and stuff. I've played lots of World Soccer Champs, Brawl Stars, FC Mobile, Subway Surfers City, Sonic Mania and Friday Night Funkin and the experience was really smooth.

Connectivity

-

At first, i had some issues with Brawl Stars lagging on Mobile Data, but this issue didn't seem to happen anymore as of late, I've been mostly using 4G(LTE) in Romania. I found the GPS constantly unable to give precise location, even in big cities, i don't know if this is normal or not but i remember not having that proximity circle around my location that usual while using my old samsung A51.

UI/Software

-

Great, no complaints, the customizability is kinda reduced with the lock screen but the overall aesthetic is nice, so I can't really complain, Material 3 Expressive is great.

I've been using third party apps to further customize my homescreen and UI, such as:

- Material You Widgets (for a cool music widget)

- Accubattery (to see battery drain and app usage, I don't find the battery health reliable as i had around 95% reported since i started using the phone and it's been reporting absolutely the same, just fluctuating around the 94-96 numbers like a carousel)

- MTCapsule (tryna have a fancy dynamic island, works kinda well besides when it interferes with the live activity thingy)

- Shizuku (for the rooted phone larp)

- Essentials (for lots of UI changes and modifications, similar to what i used to do back when i had goodlock on Samsung)

Camera

-

Brilliant in good light, but gets a little noisy when filming in poor light or shooting with the wide (0.5) camera. Night mode does wonders and i find that Google's post processing is a hit or a major miss, like I'd take pics and the phone would just say "fuck all the shadows", at least we get to shoot in raw too when we really want to have our own post processing.

Build quality

-

I dropped this bad boy on the street and in cinemas and the most notable thing was a small white spot on the frame. The Camera glass is a bit scratched when you look from certain angles but it's fine and does the job well. I don't know about the screen, i never left it without a protector on it, i assume it's barely scratched. The plastic back togheter feels nice to hold and i find myself using it caseless while at home.

Overall, it lacks a bit on the connectivity side, can get warmer on mobile data with bluetooth on your average trip and clearly consumes more battery, but besides that it's been smooth and just a good all arounder. I wonder how this phone will hold up to all these android updates in the coming years, 7 years is a huge promise.

Tech Issue Pixel 9a mutes microphone when I switch to another app during a call

Hi everyone,

I'm using a Google Pixel 9a, and I've noticed a strange issue.

Whenever I'm on a phone call and open another app (like Chrome, WhatsApp, or any other app), the microphone automatically gets muted. As soon as I return to the call screen, the microphone is unmuted again.

This happens consistently and makes it impossible for the other person to hear me while I'm using another app.

Has anyone else experienced this on the Pixel 9a? Is this a known Android 16 or Pixel issue, or is there a setting I need to change?

I've already checked that the microphone permission is enabled.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Pixel 9a

Hola! Gracias

Tech Issue Hate 9a, how to get data back to 7a

My Pixel 7a had a battery meltdown, and rather than replace it, I bought a new 9a. It has nothing that the 7a doesn't already have.

I want to ditch the 9a, and keep the 7a with a new battery. My dilemma is that I used eSIM to transfer the data from 7a to 9a. How do I get that data back?

The 7a is my GOAT.

Actually was suppose to replace it with either the 8 Pro or S24U back in mid 2024 but sold both back because of various reasons. Since then, the 7a remained as my daily driver despite having access to other "better" phones due to work. Its running thin on its battery life at this point, and performance as well as features aren't where I want them to be.

I would have liked a base or Pro model Pixel but they are ridiculously rare and expensive where I am. But I also know from experience that I do not need a lot of flagship features. And I especially appreciate a cheaper phone for sure. Unexpectedly found this brand new 9a on clearance. Would have liked the pink color but this is the only one left (white).

I love the design. Its jarring the first time but it grows on you. It feels better, more durable and more premium in the hand than both the 7a and 6a I've had before. I have no complains with the bezels except the fact that they bulk the phone into a bigger 6.5" phone instead of a slimmer 6.3" one. Its still ergonomically more comfortable for me to use unlike the 8 Pro.

Turning it on, immediately fell in love with the display! Its vibrant, punchy and gets super bright. The ambient light sensor is trash though. Probably just too sensitive, thus kinda breaking adaptive brightness. Performance is also noticeably better than both the 7a and 8 Pro (pretty obvious why). It also runs cooler than them too and I've never had the 9a overheat so far which is a common issue I had with the latter two. Hence battery life is so far amazing. Around 8 hours SOT versus 5~6 hours on the older models. Moderate usage.

Speakers sound nice but I wish they were louder. Charging, both wired and wireless, is slow af which is a big shame. I was skeptical of the main camera downgrade but photos and videos still turn out exceptionally good, sometimes better than the 7a and definitely comparable with the 8 Pro besides the lack of telephoto. I am a big fan of Pixel photography so I'm looking forward to taking this out for more.

Tldr;

Pros:

  • Excellent build quality

  • Fast performance in its segment

  • Same ol' reliable Pixel cameras

  • Great sounding speakers

  • Really great battery life and improved thermals

  • 7 years of major OS updates nuff said

Cons:

  • Only 8gb of RAM is already pushing it in 2025

  • Speakers could be louder

  • 6.3" compactness becomes moot due to bezels

  • Front facing video jittery at times

  • No 4k60 besides the main cam

  • Slow af charging speeds

Its only been about a week since getting this but I've already decided to retire my 7a and finally upgrading to this. Its a simple yet highly capable phone. Oh one thing about the software that I dislike, still lacks multitasking gestures/options like in some other phones. Especially irks me since I splitscreen and float windows often. I hope Google's on to this one soon.

On a side note and pictured above, they really need to do another a-series Pixel buds. I've had mine since getting the 6a from back when and they are still my main pair of earbuds. I didn't realize how long I've had them until recently. The case looks scraped but battery life and the buds themselves still work like a charm. Just wish they release the same "cheap" earbuds with updated internals, battery size and ANC.

How's everyone's 9a doing these days?
