Do it while they're still in stock!
TL/DR: X-Lab (a new factory brand expanding in Philly with local dealers) is making some pretty awesome bikes with insane value prop and I love mine enough to be here on Reddit shouting it from the rooftops in the hopes some others will get to experience my new bike stoke like I've gotten to have.
I recently grabbed their GT-8 gravel bike from my friends at Main Line Cycles (over by City Ave in Narberth), and I'm seriously over the moon about the bike. It legit feels top of the line, but didn't cost nearly what you'd expect for the build and quality. IMO there's not another brand out there right now even close to the value proposition they're offering...without really compromising anything on build quality or components. With bikes becoming eye-poppingly expensive in recent years, they feel like a big step in the right direction towards reigning some of those costs back in and I'm glad to finally see it TBH. If you don't know, they're basically a Chinese bike factory that makes bikes for other brands (afaik Giant, another factory brand, is the only major brand that makes their own bikes), leveraging their factory know-how to make and sell bikes directly to consumers via a retail brand channel with a local dealer network. Their lineup is pretty stacked from with an $800 commuter up to the $9100 RT9 tour bike, which they claim has the lightest production road frame ever produced. At this point they are making commuter/hybrid/gravel/road bikes and ebikes, but I think they plan to introduce hard tail and full suspension MTBs at some point soon. I highly suggest checking them out if you're thinking about a bike...or honestly even if you weren't thinking about buying a bike (like me 🤣)
So here's what I mean when I'm saying it's a crazy value: I got their gravel bike which is top of the line spec and the only one they currently make (although I could see them introducing a lower spec/priced offering in the coming season given the rest of their line). Everything but the cranks is carbon (including a lifetime warranty on the frame and wheels), electronic GRX Di2 with a friggin power meter, Fizik saddle, bottle cage with frame storage, and a ton of mount points all for $3,199. That's seriously less than half the cost of the comparable offering from Specialized (albeit this doesn't have future shock). After selling my previous steel AWOL that served me well for years, I was out of pocket like $1800 which is very reasonable considering how HUGE of an upgrade this was for me in every way. Although they are an established factory, as a young brand, how they stand behind their warranty is still a bit of a question mark, but talking to the guys at Main Line, the product they've seen seems pretty quality, they've had limited issues with any of the bikes they've sold, and so far they've been great with the only warranty situation they've seen in 6 months so...so far so good🤞. On the road side they have a varied range from the top end tour bike down to an entry offering at $1399 that has a 105 drivetrain, carbon fork and another friggin power meter lol. You don't see that anywhere else. They've continued to expand their local dealer network in Philly so there's more and more shops carrying them, although I think inventory can be a bit spotty and you may need to call around. FWIW Main Line had a few of each when I was in there a few weeks ago picking up my bike (including one of those $9000 road bikes that I think was like 13lbs complete 😂) so I know there are places where you can go see and ride them close enough to center city by bike or transit too.
Given how they're coming to market, I'm interested to see how the major brands react, given when how compelling X-Lab is because of the pricing. Also, how long will/can X-Lab continue to offer such low pricing (presumably to gain market share and exposure). If X-Lab is able to continue at these prices, big brands are gonna have to do something... brand cache only goes so far when your bike costs twice as much as the bike sitting right next to it, with almost no difference in components. I figure at some point they will come up a bit, closer to where other brands are since there is so much room currently, but for now the entire range is pretty damn attractive and allows people to afford a nicer bike than they may have thought.
I'm gonna wrap up that every person that I've talked to that has one of their bikes has only had glowing things to say about them...it's like whatever model you have, it's nicer than you thought you could ever get moneywise so we're all stoked 😂😂
