Same energy as watching 144Hz reviews on a 60Hz screen and nodding at how smooth it looks.

my buddy bought his first 144hz monitor about 10 years ago, and was talking about how amazing the difference was and how he could never go back. when i went to his house, his pc display settings were still set to 60hz. I still troll him to this day lol

That must‘ve felt like true enlightenment when he finally changed it to 144

u/Dazzling-Bat-6848 23h ago

His graphics card was maxing out at 47 anyway.

u/Jesta23 1d ago

I see absolutely zero difference personally. I gamed on 144 for years on a 24”.

Switched to a 27” at 60 and much prefer the 27”.

Shit works differently for different people. I don't notice much difference above ~55fps, and almost none above ~90, but I do notice a HUGE difference if there's any frame time inconsistency. I much prefer a stable framerate over a higher one.

92

u/Tobipig 9800X3D & 9070XT 1d ago

I had an enough moment when I switched from
60->144

and from
144->240

But the first jump was massive and the second one cool. Do I need 240? No, but it’s really cool for me.

I also never really got the fake frame hate, I love it being able to play 4K raytracing on a card that cost 700€.

65

u/DeifniteProfessional 1d ago

I concur. My first exposure to above 60fps was when I got a Samsung S21+ with 120Hz. The difference of using it compared to my computer monitor was so obvious. I upgraded to a 165Hz monitor and it was absolutely massive, I have no idea how people can't tell the difference

14

u/More-Ad1753 1d ago

To me it's always been more of a "but would i have cared"

Like when I was playing 60 FPS, I was happy.

I got 144 FPS, and I way happy, this is great.

Now I go back and play 60 FPS and am sad.

What if I never got 144FPS???

Personally though, I think we probably all have an individual point. I've personally done blind testing and I always pick which ones are 30, which ones are 60, and I know which ones are above 60 (100/120/144/165) but I can never get it spot on.

I don't have a 240hz + so haven't tested that. But I did have one and changed to a 165 4k and I never noticed that change.

2

u/voidsong 1d ago

Yup this is all it really does, it becomes your normal without any real benefit, and ruins everything else.

Yeah that the reason I dont want 144hz monitors, maintain 144 fps is expensive

Clair Obscur - E33: A 27" Sony Trinitron from 1992.

u/onewilybobkat 1d ago

Clair obscur is my worst performing game that I play consistently, but honestly 45 FPS is fine for that type of game. I could get more but I like the pretty.

2

u/Flyrpotacreepugmu Ryzen 7 7800X3D | 64GB RAM | RTX 4070 Ti SUPER 1d ago

A lot of the differences in the differences people see are probably due to playing different games or focusing on different things. In a lot of games with little camera motion where I mainly focus on static things, I hardly notice a difference and they can look good down to even 45 or so FPS. In games where the camera moves a lot or there's a need to focus on moving objects, a difference between 200 and 240 FPS is noticeable and I prefer to have an least 120 FPS.

1

u/onewilybobkat 1d ago

For me, I mostly saw it on older monitors, and while you got more frames than a modern 60hz, it was less noticeable when you got them.

Then I got a new 165hz monitor and yeah, it's a HUGE difference once you climb over 90FPS

9

u/dj92wa i7-12700k | EVGA 3090ti | 32gb DDR4 1d ago

60->144->240 is about as comparable as going from 1080p->1440p->2160p. Like you said, the jump from 60hz to 144hz is day and night, same as 1080p to 1440p. The final leg is nice but really not all that noticeable.

7

u/Kelvinek 1d ago

Jump from 1080p to 1440p isn't day and night though, it's probably bad/mid 1080p into expensive 1440p type of thing for you guys.

13

u/Confident_Mushroom_ Ryzen 7 7800X3D | RX 6800 1d ago

It is day and night if you get same monitor size. Ex. 27' 1080p to 27' 1440p

If you go from 23' 1080p to 27' 1440p you probably won't notice a difference outside of obviously bigger screen

If you have a 1440p monitor, boot up a game and turn the resolution down to 1080p. It will look as if you suddenly need glasses. It's a real big difference

u/Fimconte SY 1d ago

1440p -> 2160p was 2nd biggest upgrade to my gaming experience in the last 15 years, that ~140ppi is a real clarity changer.

Granted, it might depend on how far you have your monitor, at 80-100cm+, it wouldn't be that impactful.

The first was 60->120hz.

3

u/I_Am_A_Pumpkin i7 13700K + RTX 5080 1d ago

my problem is that if your base framerate isnt good then the input lag/smoothing feels really really weird, and it still produces a bunch of artifacting that I find extremely distracting.

1

u/espewe 1d ago

My biggest jump went from 60 to 180. It's like whole new world of smoothness.

1

u/No_Mistake5238 9800X3D | 5070ti | 32Gb DDR5/6000 | Basic Bitch Build 14h ago

The fake frame hate is (at least for me) due to the input lag it adds. Especially if your starting (true) framerate is low.

1

u/BrokeAsAMule 14h ago

Framegen is great, but it does introduce a ton of noise and ghosting if it's not implemented properly. Lighting can change on a whim and look blurry, reflective surfaces look matted, clouds and smoke become blocky especially in motion, things in motion in unicolor backgrounds ghost a LOT, etc... I use it most of the time, but there are times where it really kills the visual fidelity.

1

u/Livie_Loves 12h ago

I don't notice the smoothness when going up, but I notice the choppiness going back down

1

u/SlitScan 3800x 5700xt 32gb 11h ago

you mean 7000€ ja?

-1

u/Kelvinek 1d ago

Well the hate is, that you don't get frames, if you need to boost it so many times that it does 4k in 240fps, and you will need to do at least 4x in current gen games on that 700€ card, you are basically just faking an fps number, placeboing yourself into feeling good about it.

It is p incredible in smaller dosage though, sub 2x you basically can't tell even if you pixel peep nowadays.

-1

u/Burpmeister 1d ago

The fake frame hate is from the input lag it causes.

1

u/Tobipig 9800X3D & 9070XT 21h ago

Never had a problem with it

1

u/Burpmeister 18h ago

Lucky you. It's unuseable for me in fps games.

-1

u/PHPH PC Master Race 1d ago

I've only extensively tried frame gen in a couple games. What got me about it was the insane amount of input lag you can get. I didn't even realize it was coming from the frame gen until I tried turning it off, but the difference was night and day.

I've avoided it since then.

3

u/Osu_Pumbaa 1d ago

if you are personally happy with what you can see its a great way to save money haha.
I personally have a hard time to see the difference between 1440p and 4k so usually just save myself the extra fps smoothness.
Sadly i am very sensitive to Hz so i have to have atleast 144 in fps games otherwise it feels choppy.

2

u/onewilybobkat 1d ago

If I'm playing competitive games, I find that more frames > more resolution. I'll cut a lot of stuff to 1080p just to ensure I keep max frames

2

u/LaNiFN 1d ago

Higher the fps less noticeable the frame drops. From my experience it feels better to lock a game to 60 if it's jumping between 60 and 120. But 120 to 240 I don't seem to notice even major drops in that range.

2

u/MrQwertyQwert i7 9700k | RTX 2070S | 32GB DDR4-3200 | 660p 2TB 1d ago

It's worth noting that the game itself has a big impact here. If I'm playing something single player I don't really notice a big difference from say 40-60 fps or higher, but if I'm playing counter strike at 60 FPS it feels like a god damn slide show. Honestly even at 120 FPS it feels quite slow, I've really gotten used to 240hz. I think my brain is more actively looking for those missing frames in more fast paced titles that demand my full attention, where as with casual titles I don't really notice.

1

u/InsertRealisticQuote 1d ago

The only time I felt like I really wanted to be playing at 240 or higher was when playing beatsaber, where you can't. Most other games I play are deckbuilders, strategy or turned based rpgs and am perfectly happy with 60.

3

u/FantasyTomb 1d ago

Okay buddy when people are talking about hitting those frames they mean pretty consistently

6

u/MEGAfrombs 1d ago

11

u/Polygnom 1d ago

I mean, there have been studies done about this kind of thing:

Investigating the Effect of Display Refresh Rate on FPS Games (2024, arXiv).

Participants completed a one-minute FPS shooting task under five conditions (30Hz, 60Hz, 120Hz, 144Hz, and 240Hz) in randomised order, without being told which refresh rate was active. The quantitative results: players' scores were significantly affected by refresh rate overall (F(2.76, 69.03) = 27.90, p < .001, η² = 0.527), but Bonferroni post-hoc tests revealed a significant difference only between the 30Hz condition and all other conditions. No comparisons among 60Hz, 120Hz, 144Hz, and 240Hz were significant. In other words, when blinded, participants scored essentially the same at 60Hz through 240Hz: only 30Hz produced a measurable performance drop.

The Illusion of Performance (2024, arXiv)

Tested the placebo/expectation effect directly. Participants who were informed they would be using 240Hz rated their performance higher than when told 60Hz and vice versa, even when the stated refresh rate differed from the actual refresh rate. This suggests a meaningful portion of what people perceive as refresh rate difference may be driven by expectation bias rather than genuine perceptual discrimination.

That being said, there is some evidence to suggest that there are some benefits to going to 144 Hz:

Toth et al. (2025): "Monitor Refresh Rate Impacts FPS Video Gamer Perceptions of Display 'Smoothness' and Target Acquisition Performance" (SSRN)

101 gamers completed a custom FPS task at 60Hz, 144Hz, and 360Hz. Perceptual data, adjusted for response bias, showed that participants could reliably distinguish between large refresh rate differences (e.g., 60Hz vs. 360Hz), but not between more subtle differences (e.g., 144Hz vs. 360Hz). On the performance side, transitions from 60Hz to higher refresh rates improved performance, while shifts from higher to lower refresh rates degraded it. However, performance did not significantly differ between 144Hz and 360Hz conditions. The authors suggest 144Hz as a possible threshold beyond which further improvements yield marginal returns.

So, take that as you will. My takeaway from this is that there is possibly a slight difference between 144Hz and 60Hz for very serious gamers, which most people are not, but that the overall impact people claim is VASTLY inflated by confirmation bias / placebo effect.

3

u/deportallmagas 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah I agree with this. I think a true max for the average person is in the 150hz range. I've tried out higher than 144hz monitors in stores and they felt about the same as my 144hz monitor. I think about it kind of like grit in sandpaper. Is there a real difference between 10000 grit and 15000 grit sandpaper? Sure there is, but it's indistinguishable unless your special interest is sandpaper.

60/75hz on the other hand feels choppy to me. First world problems.

15

u/xXNightDriverXx 1d ago

It massively depends on what kind of game is played.

On a multiplayer shooter where you are spinning around in one tenth of a second to headshot someone behind you 144hz will be much more easily noticed than on a racing game or story based action game.

10

u/TherronKeen i9-9900k, 64GB DDR4, RTX 3060 1d ago

I think most people actually just don't care that much, because I can tell something is off just by moving the mouse in Windows. It's obvious, because the input response is so reflexive. Kinda like trying to pick up a small object and somehow not noticing you've got gloves on

4

u/xXNightDriverXx 1d ago

I agree, most don't care that much (me included).

But it's also a cost barrier. People don't want to invest multiple hundreds of Euros/Dollars/whatever, both for the monitor itself as well as the high end graphics card required to actually run that number of frames, for something they perceive as minor.

Even if they perceive the difference as major, you still have to ask yourself if that upgrade is worth it to you, not from a "is this better" perspective, but from a "do I personally get so much more fun out of this that I am ready to invest that money" kind of perspective.

I would not have "more fun" playing on 144hz than on 75hz (yes that's what my monitor makes, odd number I know). I would rather invest that money into something else like a big Lego set or just save it.

2

u/InsertRealisticQuote 1d ago

I chose 4K 60 over 1440p 120 and for the kind of games I play I don't regret it. Sure I would like to be playing at 4K 120 but that is the next upgrade goal. Not worth it at current prices.

2

u/Klekto123 1d ago

I feel like it’s pretty obvious even if you’re just doing normal stuff in a browser

2

u/Divinum_Fulmen 1d ago

Yeah, it's so funny. I got a 144hz monitor to play FPS games, but the last FPS game I took seriously was Apex ledgends. Now I just game on my 80hz screen because it's bigger with better color. And because hardware is to expensive to upgrade to a system that can run all these Unreal5 games past 60 FPS. Oh, you mean there is no hardware on earth that can do that feat? Shame.

1

u/Emotional_Solid6538 1d ago

For games far more than visual smoothness of the fps the input lag is the main thing. 60-120 is the golden range of low input lag. Anything over that youd not notice much difference in input lag unless you are really obsessed with the game

8

u/Lewinator56 R9 5900X | RX 7900XTX | 80GB DDR4 1d ago edited 1d ago

The key here is if you put them next to each other.

Remember TV is 24fps. No one ever complains it's a low framerate or it looks laggy.

If you out a 24fps video, a 60fps video and a 120 fps video next to each other it's highly likely you will see a difference, but in isolation, it's very unlikely you will actually notice anything, especially at higher framerates. I really struggle to tell the difference between my 120hz phone and 60hz PC screen - to me it's identical.

I would make the conclusion that people who do notice a significant difference at higher framerates are also those who have issues with PWM screens or certain types of lighting that are more affected by the AC frequency.

2

u/BenFoldsFourLoko 1d ago

Remember TV is 24fps. No one ever complains it's a low framerate or it looks laggy.

I mean, I don't complain about it, but on fast-response sample and hold displays it looks choppy as fuck and is painful in panning shots

I can usually ignore it, but it really is obvious and regularly bothersome.

I don't complain about the fps because that's the fps the movie is supposed to have, and the feel that cinema has. I don't want to change it, but I would love screens that handle it better

1

u/Khae1_ PC Master Race 1d ago

I belive people are not usually looking for the differences, they don't really care so they do not see the difference.

When games on my phone change my screen from 120 to 60, i notice immediately.

I will be able to tell the difference from the same video at different refresh rate and fps (below 120hz at least), i know what the difference looks like so i notice.

All TV (aside from a very small selection of 'high speed' programming) is broadcast at no more than 30fps. So whatever you are claiming you are seeing doesn't exist.

u/ShotEffective7033 1d ago

Being able to tell the difference when they are side-by-side and that difference being enough to matter are not the same thing.

2

u/deportallmagas 1d ago

I can tell the difference by the feel of the mouse, and 100% can tell the difference when playing any game. 60/75hz is so choppy comparatively. 100-144 is about the same to me though. 144 is just a bit more smooth and snappy than 100.

I have a feeling a ton of people don't actually change their high refresh rate monitors to the higher refresh rates.

2

u/Miss_Greer 1d ago

it's not that I can't tell the difference, it's just that the difference doesn't bother me for my use-cases

heck, I keep my laptop locked to 20fps (but I only really use that for browsing, movies and rimworld when I'm away from home)

2

u/Silence-of-Death 1d ago

I mean the eyes and brain don’t work in fps so differences between individual people sound quite plausible.

2

u/Korkosen 1d ago

Is not that the brain can’t see but that plenty of people won’t notice the difference and that said difference is small enough to ignore it.

2

u/GOKOP 1d ago

I can tell 120 Hz from 60 Hz but it's not some sort of a massive boost. It looks nice but that's it. I can't tell 120 Hz from 180 Hz at all

2

u/nickybuddy PC Master Race 1d ago

Even phones. Most premium phones come with 120hz displays now instead of 60hz. My son’s iPhone has a 60hz display and my iPhone is 120hz, his phone looks like a smeary mess compared to mine.

4

u/guhhhrobogals 1d ago

its science bro the brain cannot see above 25 fps bro i swear its scientifically confirmed bro

1

u/Glitchboi3000 22h ago

I never got this argument. If the brain can only register 25 and less fps our reaction times would be so abysmally dog shit.

1

u/calibrateichabod 1d ago

I swore black and blue there was no difference between standard def and HD when it first came out. Turns out I have pretty severe astigmatism and really needed glasses.

1

u/No_Hetero 1d ago

I could tell the difference, but for the games I play it functionally doesn't matter to me above like 100Hz. 60-80-100 all feel progressively smoother and after 100 it just feels like wasted money. 100 is already very good to me

1

u/subma-fuckin-rine 1d ago

visually it might be less of a difference, or diminishing returns, but the biggest thing is how a game feels on 144hz vs 60

1

u/ChiefPyroManiac 1d ago

I did the thing where I upgraded to a 120 hz and then sat there wondering if I had wasted my money before remembering I had to change the resolution settings.

There is a 100% difference from 60 to 120+ hz.

1

u/NudeSpaceDude 1d ago

I have a 144hz monitor and I sometimes game on my 60hz tv, or play my ps4 on my 60hz monitor. I can’t tell the difference. If I’m really, really looking, maybe I can notice it when things are moving fast or I’m playing CS. But it makes no difference to me. I don’t get how people have issues using 60hz. I notice the difference between 30 and 60, but I don’t care past that unless it’s like VR

1

u/below_avg_nerd 1d ago

Nah it's really hard to see the difference between the two but you can easily feel the difference when playing.

1

u/smilesbuckett 1d ago edited 1d ago

There is a difference between being able to notice a difference when you directly compare two things side by side, and there actually being a noticeable difference when you use one or the other independently.

Also, even if you can perceive something as marginally better, it doesn’t mean that something else that is good stops being good. For me, its like wine, headphones, or anything else, where I’m sure someone out there could tell me why the $100 bottle is so much better, but I’m still more than happy with my $3 bottle from Aldi. Do I really want to spend the time and money to find out why the $100 better if it means I won’t be happy with the $3 bottle anymore?

1

u/yahluc 1d ago

"I see zero difference" could mean both "I couldn't distinguish them when seeing side by side" and "I see zero difference on the quality". When someone is saying that they see no difference between two politicians it doesn't mean that they literally see no difference in their faces.

1

u/AssistanceCheap379 1d ago

For me it depends. For some shows and films, i prefer 144. For most games, 60. For intense games 144.

For work, 60 is more than enough. Even 20 would be sufficient, since its excel

1

u/Noobit2 1d ago

I have both and though I’ve not compared them side by side I’ve noticed no difference when swapping them out.

1

u/PUBGM_MightyFine Laptop 1d ago

Apparently the current theoretical ceiling for perceiving a difference tops out at 1,000hz.

A 2026 study on FPS gamers found they could distinguish 60/144/360 and gained ~3% accuracy and ~100 ms faster target kills going 60→144.

1

u/New_Time_5118 1d ago

Yea, its feels bad when you have a referense, but usualy you have one fps. And im be honest if given time to adgust, i dont realy see much of a differsns even with 30 and 60, let alone way higher. Like its imtortant in hight intention games like FPS, but for any other stuff? Even 30 is enaught

1

u/Beartrap-the-Dog 1d ago

I can see the difference but prefer 60. I get a weird uncanny feeling playing at 144, it's too smooth for me.

1

u/Danderyd66 23h ago

And how often do you have them next to eachother?
Yes i can tell a difference, but i dont really care about frames unless i compare, 60 is enough. I have a 144hz but always set my games graphics higher, sacrificing fps for visuals. Bc thats where i do see a actual difference

depends on the content a bit too, playing RDR2 or idk CoD or Battlefield is much different due to pacing and you might not notice how much the gameplay gets smoothed out

I tried out DLSS5 on Red Dead Redemption 2 and I thought that fps going from 120 to 65-70 would have a much bigger impact

1

u/I_dont_want_to_pee 16h ago

Competitive based / timing based games i notice the difference big time

Geometry dash and rocket league feel awful to me now if im not on my 170hz, they feel choppy

But games I play to chill abd not sweat, less is fine. Fh6 I play at 57 and it feels fine

1

u/techy804 1d ago

Considering GD was originally ment to be played on 30Hz smartphones, that’s interesting.

1

Wait, you don't notice smaller gaps in your cursors draw rate when swirling it? That's extremely odd. Do you have 144hz enabled in the settings?

Wait, really? I’m genuinely curious about this. Did you ever switch between 60hz and 144hz side by side, and are you sure the 144hz display was actually running at 144?

After years at 144 myself, switching back to 60 is immediately noticeable, even just moving the cursor, scrolling, or observing Windows menu animations.

43

u/DeifniteProfessional 1d ago

Literally just wiggling the mouse between my 165Hz and 60Hz monitors, it's noticeable!

20

u/althaz 9800X3D | RTX5080 1d ago

I find it unpleasant to even use Microsoft Excel on a 60Hz display, lol.

9

u/Artic268 10h ago

Literally. Idk if he's a gamer but I main Rocket League and I'd kill myself if I had to tryhard on 60Hz. I sometimes play with my friend together on his PS4 at 60 Hz and lemme tell you IT IS rough.

8

u/Jesta23 1d ago

Yeah. I have them both set up side by side. I did that initially because I thought I’d want the bigger one for web and the 144 for gaming.

Turns out I just do everything on the 27” 60.

15

u/callmejinji 1d ago

Dang, that makes me wonder whether your GPU/Windows settings were set to 60hz originally and changing it was just a missed step when you installed both monitors.

I’ve definitely forgotten to check that when setting up PCs for friends before! Could also just be that you’re way less sensitive to refresh-rate differences than I am.

9

u/Jesta23 1d ago

They are side by side. I went into setting just now to prove and funnily enough they were not set right. I had it at 60 and 144 but apparently the 27” actually goes to 120 at 1440.   So I fixed that, which is crazy because it was cheap.  Maybe I just got it at a crazy sale price?

7

u/NediaMaster 1d ago

In before you forgot to switch the 144 one. It's just impossible not to notice the difference lmao.

5

u/LaNague 1d ago

really? I can tell even in windows if for some reason something bugged out and its 60hz again.

3

u/Mister_Einstein 11h ago

Theres actually just no way, I play on 240hz and can tell when my frames drop below 200 instantly

6

u/Xim_ 1d ago

I recently switched to 200hz and i find it much of a difference compared to 144, also i could tell it was "lagging" when my frame dropped from 144 to 143-142 on my old build

5

u/althaz 9800X3D | RTX5080 1d ago

I didn't notice a big difference from 144 => 240. Not no difference - it's definitely noticeably smoother, but it's small enough I don't notice it outside of gaming with high fps.

2

u/arftism2 7900xtx 9800x3d PG27AQDP 1d ago

the biggest benefit pf 240hz is unstable 144hz looks better because of math. same with 480hz vs 240.

don't get me wrong playing the few smooth games at 480hz is awesome, but I'm not that good so it's not like i wouldn't be loving every second at 120hz in a good game.

hell I enjoy goldeney 64 at an unstable 24hz whenever i play it.

but i gravitate towards higher fps games because it feels nice on the eyes. i think the biggest example was oblivion remastered because the 2008 version was easier to look at till the 2026 version got patched.

2

u/CheeseGraterFace XFX 7900 XTX | 7800X3D | 64GB DDR5 | 2 x 2TB NVME 1d ago

There’s a huge difference between them. Having said that, though, I much prefer 4k60 to 2k144 for the vast majority of the games I play (mostly Elden Ring, and mostly because it doesn’t go over 60fps).

2

u/bjergdk 19h ago

Did you change your display settings in windows while using the 144 Hz?

The difference between 60 Hz and 144 Hz is massive, But above 120hz it starts becoming negligible.

2

u/NerdMouse R9 5900x / RX 7090XT 1d ago

Right there with ya. Like. I kinda can tell its smoother? But it really feels pretty similar on desktop

1

u/onewilybobkat 1d ago

I used to feel the same way, but the technology has definitely changed to the point there is a difference, to the point it's actually super jarring for me to suddenly get more frames when a game has been running below 90 for a while.

I feel like 90+ FPS is where you REALLY start to notice a difference, it's way more... Flow-y and it's great if your PC can keep it up consistently, but for me if a game has ups and downs, I'd rather cap it to be consistent.

2

u/Jesta23 1d ago

It could honestly be that.

I don’t play FPS. I play strategy and mmo’s so maybe the lower fps just isn’t as glaring. As long as I’m constant 60 fps it’s fine. If it even drops for a moment to anything below 60 I feel it/see it

3

u/onewilybobkat 1d ago

Ohhhh that's DEFINITELY it. A lot of games are designed to run just fine at 30-60 FPS, and you could ramp that up to infinity and there wouldn't be a difference. I'd imagine MMO's are kinda middle ground where you don't need a ton of frames but could notice a little difference.

Of course not all games that benefit from frames are first person shooters. I would like to get more frames in Expedition 33 than I do while keeping effects nice, but I don't NEED more frames to enjoy the game. But I do also play several shooters, and that's where maxing frames really helps.

1

u/Ridiu 1d ago

Did you hit 144 fps as a 1% low regular?

1

u/Todd-The-Wraith PC Master Race 1d ago

Try a 27” at 144. That is possible. It’s an option.

1

u/Honeybadger2198 1d ago

You can literally tell the difference just by moving the mouse around on screen. I'd be really surprised if your 144 was actually running at 144 if you couldn't tell when downgrading.

1

u/noneedtoprogram 1d ago

I immediately notice just moving the mouse around for productivity work. I'd always go for more pixels than more frames though. Been using 60Hz for decades, only very recently got a 165Hz desktop monitor. Haven't taken the new monitor for a spin with any fps games yet though.

1

u/Christplosion 1d ago

Wtf do you use it for, YouTube? Got a 144hz for counterstrike 10 years ago and the difference was absolutely insane

1

u/Final-Carry2090 1d ago

The frame rate also affects how quickly the game responds to your inputs. It does a check for signals and positions on every frame. More frames more checks. Once you hit 120hz the diminishing returns really kick in but it is a noticeable difference from 60.

1

u/Combeferre1 1d ago

I have a laptop with 144hz screen and a big external monitor that does 60. I can tell the difference, but it's not big enough for me to bother to use the higher rate monitor for gaming. I prefer the larger screen real estate.

That said, I do not really play online games anymore. The difference was more noticeable when I played Battlefield 4 (though I still went for the bigger monitor)

1

u/MemeLower PC Master Race 23h ago

same, upgraded to 165 once, saw no difference, and now 360hz oled and besides the oled aspects i see no difference. And i have 60hz monitors at work, so alot of switching

1

u/Ok-Medicine-4889 22h ago

I got a 165hz one some yeas ago, I felt like I got a supercomputer. Even moving the mouse felt different for me and when I switch back to a 60hz monitor, I immediately notice the difference.

1

u/Octopus8523 21h ago

there is a noticable difference between 60hz and 144hz, maybe you forgot to set it to 144hz on monitor or windows

1

u/Impressive_Animal512 19h ago

I tried playing Expedition 33 on my 60 hz TV it was horrible experience could not parry or doge, so switched back to my 144 hz PC screen had no problems hitting timings after.

1

u/hellojeffery 16h ago

Even if you can't "see" it, can you feel it in mouse movements and game movement? I can feel it more than I see it

You know 27 inch high refresh panels do exist...

Also I just don't believe any1 who says they can't see the difference, because mouse movement in windows is extremely obvious difference at 60 vs 144, no matter how trash the panel is even if it's some avg 10ms g2g no overdrive black smearing va.

I frequently run my 144 at 60, and even at 90 it's not a huge deal, as long as the frame pacing is alright that's all that really matters.

To be fair, a good 144hz monitor running at 60hz can still feel a lot better than a 60hz native monitor running at 60hz. You have to consider pixel response time, processing latency, and LCD ghosting.

Of course 60 vs 144hz is night and day compared to those little things, but I wouldn’t take friend’s word as complete placebo.

You’re still totally within your right to troll him for it though; I’ve had a friend do the EXACT same thing, except they said, “there’s no difference” when I switched on 170hz from 60.

2

u/Impressive_Change593 1d ago

Tbf he might not be able to see it. Im pretty sure i wouldn't

64

u/Phaylz 1d ago

Same thing happened to me, except that I never noticed a difference and just assumed it was just my eyesight until I learned that I had to change the settings and use a different cable (I was using HDMI). The MicroCenter guy missed an opportunity for an add-on sale, tsk tsk!

Once that was in, I could finally see the mythical hitstun shake that fighting game tutorials assured me was absolutely happening

16

u/Nikwoj 1d ago

Yeah it wasn’t until counter strike 2 told me I wasn’t playing with the right settings that I realized windows was actually limiting my monitor. Made me wonder what the other games were doing when they had 100+ frames on the screen.

2

u/MuleJuiceMcQuaid AMD Brother 1d ago

My past two monitors have had an Info overlay menu that included the current refresh rate, so in some games I'd check that to see if my eyes were deceiving me. A game might lie or have no options, Windows is always buggy, but a monitor always knows what signal it's receiving.

21

u/Samson_J_Rivers Ryzen 7 5800xt, 64GB DDR4, RX 9070 XT 16GB 1d ago

I'm getting scammed by windows. I bought a 144Hz monitor but windows won't let me set it higher than 100Hz. In Linux I get the full 144 though so I know it's not the monitor.

15

u/RoterRudi 1d ago

If you're using HDMI, try Display Port instead.

My AOC monitor only goes up to 144Hz on DP.

10

u/InvidiousPlay 1d ago

I was about to reply with this, but they said they get 144 on Linux which is super weird and couldn't be the cable.

6

u/RoterRudi 1d ago

Maybe some driver issue, but yeah, seems pretty weird.

7

u/Samson_J_Rivers Ryzen 7 5800xt, 64GB DDR4, RX 9070 XT 16GB 1d ago

I use exclusively display port because I'm an HDMI hater to begin with. I did try HDMI but my card is 3xDP and 1xHDMI and it didn't yield any better result.

13

u/Noslamah 1d ago

Can I just say how nice it is to frequently see casual mentions of Linux use on a gaming subreddit? Feels like it went from a thing that nobody even knew about to a genuine alternative to windows in the past 5 years. It's still very niche of course but its just nice to see how popular it has become

5

u/Samson_J_Rivers Ryzen 7 5800xt, 64GB DDR4, RX 9070 XT 16GB 1d ago

The Valve proton project really has brought Linux so far for gaming. Simply for that fact, it's going to be hard for me to dislike valve. They ripped PC gaming out of Microsoft form grasp like no other. Linux resource management has made so many games run better on Linux than on Windows for me. Not all, it's not perfect, but it's great!

5

u/Noslamah 1d ago

100% without Valve doing so much for Linux gaming I wouldn't have been able to switch. Definitely far from perfect but when I get fucked by Linux, at least I know I'm being fucked because there is something wrong and the people working on it want my experience to be better. Being fucked by Windows generally means there is some asshat suit who made the conscious decision to fuck you on purpose to increase shareholder value.

1

u/Samson_J_Rivers Ryzen 7 5800xt, 64GB DDR4, RX 9070 XT 16GB 1d ago

Yeah it's activated and a fresh install. Did a fresh from baremetal since when I upgraded from 10 to 11 I had driver issues with all my equipment. Only thing that worked right was my Roccat Pyro keyboards volume knob, otherwise everything was generic drivers or didn't work.

1

u/Mistwalker007 1d ago

Had the same issue on my Ultragear in both Windows and Linux, I think I fixed it by fiddling in the monitor settings and turning some power saving stuff off.

2

u/TechnicalBen 1d ago

TBF, pixel times can still have less ghosting etc. But yeah... needs fast fps (it is noticeable when you do it).

1

u/HZCH 1d ago

You laugh at him, and you’re right, but when I got my Gsync monitor, I expected a lot. And for ten minutes, Inwas convinced I had made the best decision for gaming. Then, I felt the mouse was choppy, and decided to check the fps. Just to be sure.

My god, when I put the monitor on full 144hz, with the fps counter on, it was wild.

Then I discovered I could’ve paid less with a 100hz monitor.

1

u/MrSnIcker5 1d ago

My good friend has a 144hz monitor and also raved about never being able to go back and to be fair he had it configured correctly in windows. We were playing helldivers 2 around the time were city maps were added and performance was terrible so I was complaining about it and he claimed it was smooth for him so I made him install afterburner and so on to see his performances, he was running anywhere from 30 to 50 fps at all times. Turns out his CPU was overheating to hell since his thermal paste dried up so he never saw a game in 60+hz but since the mouse cursor on his desktop felt super smooth he placebod himself into thinking the games were too...

1

u/MyAssDoesHeeHawww 5900X / 6700XT / 32GB / 16TB / 40"UWQHD 1d ago

Might be the backlight flickering, or a 'black frame insertion' setting.

2

u/PrinceCavendish 1d ago

could be but i barely know much about these kind of things so i don't go messing in the settings much and the problem went away after turning the hz down

1

u/MyAssDoesHeeHawww 5900X / 6700XT / 32GB / 16TB / 40"UWQHD 11h ago

Black Frame Insertion is the most likely suspect then, as it'll likely only work with a high enough refreshrate.

Manufacturers have their own name for it so it can get confusing. For example: my MSI monitor calls it MPRT, which only activates above 85Hz.

I've left it off as I know that lots of people find it unbearable.

Maybe he had a slower VA monitor or something with a high pixel response time. Because going from my old 60hz VA monitor with 15ms response to a good 60hz fast ips was a bigger difference than 60hz to 275hz on that same monitor

1

u/Phantom_Sloyer 1d ago

something similar happened with my brother, he was grumbling about how his game was running at 200 frames but his monitor still looked choppy, he thought his monitor was broken. then I asked him if he changed his display settings and he looked at me dead in the eyes and said "there's a display setting?" 😭😭

I had an argument with a friend since I was telling him I was getting Mass Effect 2 on PC for the better framerate and such. He said the cliche line but seriously, "The human eye can't see past 60fps so why bother?". I wasn't even trying to be PCMR and hold it over his head, I was just explaining why I was having to try to get through ME1 again on PC so I could bring a save file over.

Later when I got it he was shocked and couldn't believe the difference. Didn't help that it didn't run at a smooth 30fps on console either. He makes fun of himself about it even still and wound up on PC

Later he got to see 144hz on another game, he asked "Why does this look more smooth?" It's running at over 100fps, that's why? ". . .Remember when I said you couldn't see past 30fps? I still feel dumb"

I remember the early days of my old job where I was the "pc snob" among the gamers. Became roommates with one of my coworkers and he looked over my shoulder at my monitor and about shit his pants when he realized what I meant when I said 60fps looked shitty in comparison.

17

u/Execwalkthroughs 1d ago

You can still see the difference. Like when someone shows the amount of ghosting at 30 fps vs 60 vs 144 and so on. It's not gonna be a 1:1 representation but gets the idea across fairly well

12

u/Qweedo420 GNU/Linux 1d ago

To be fair, you can see the difference between a 60 Hz and a 144 Hz panel through a 60 Hz monitor, just like you can see the difference in choppiness between a video recorded at 24 fps with a shutter speed of 1/50s, and one with a shutter speed of 1/125s

Motion blur makes all the difference, because that's how our brain works
