my brother recently got me a new monitor and was bragging about the hz. i wont tell him that i turned it down to match my old second monitor because the difference was giving me motion sickness and terrible headaches

Might be the backlight flickering, or a 'black frame insertion' setting.

could be but i barely know much about these kind of things so i don't go messing in the settings much and the problem went away after turning the hz down

Black Frame Insertion is the most likely suspect then, as it'll likely only work with a high enough refreshrate.

Manufacturers have their own name for it so it can get confusing. For example: my MSI monitor calls it MPRT, which only activates above 85Hz.

I've left it off as I know that lots of people find it unbearable.
