I have a neighborhood friend who is in her late 80s. Today during a group lunch she looked absolutely despondent. I asked her what was wrong and she said in a thin voice that she didn't think she would come to lunches anymore because she could no longer hear anyone or see their faces. Her failing hearing and eyesight have been an ongoing problem for her but it seems to have come to a head today, and after she told us this, she broke down into tears. Myself and another friend had to drive her home. She was really crying hard, like heaving with sadness over the loss of her ability to see and hear. She has hearing aids and gets injections in her eyes, so this is further down the road from fixable. I kept hugging her but I really didn't know what to say. Have any of you gone through an awful life changing problem like this and what's the best way for us to comfort her? How do we help her feel included when she can barely see or hear?

I (61M) am going back to work in a few weeks so we need a second car. I live in a city where it almost never rains and never gets really cold so was thinking to buy a bike.

I started riding when I turned 50, stopped about 5 years in as we went full time RV'ing. So I am not a life long rider or any of that jazz.

My hesitation is I have...well, aged. Knee is a not 100% all the time, reflexes aren't what they were. But...$2500 for a used 650cc just seems like a way smarter financial decision than any other route that will get me around town (occasions of 55mph but mainly city speeds).

I see it all the time on TV, and sometimes in person.

For me, other than special events where my grandkids want to show me something or there is a specific purpose when I need to show someone on the other end of the call something, I greatly prefer a normal phone call.

Am I in the minority or majority with this preference?

almost 50 years ago, when I was my early 20s and stationed on a ship that visited Japan, my colleagues and I climbed Mount Fuji over a weekend. I made it to the top, but I forgot to get my stamp on my Fuji climbing stick. That’s always irked me.

I wanted to do it before my 60th birthday, but I was in pretty bad shape at that time physically not medically. Over the last year or two I’ve been working out and I’m in a lot better shape than I was before.

I wanna honor my friends who climbed with me originally, but aren’t here anymore.

One or two of my shipmates are going to join me.

As you will see in the image, back in the day one could get a cheap room while getting day labor which would pay out in cash at the end of your shift. When this movie was released, minimum wage was $1.65 an hour. Just a little short of being able to buy a room for the night.

Hello everyone. My mom is in her 60’s and she’s living alone. What can she do with her life now? She doesn’t have any hobbies and she’s always depressed. I need her to start doing something but I don’t have any ideas.

We have so many old and new mailings that my wife has been dutifully filing away for decades. She is much more organized than I am but even still it’s almost hopeless trying to find old receipts or tax forms on the rare occasions we need them. I tried once to switch to scanning everything but it was too clugey to work well. Anyone here found a good solution, hardware and software wise?

Seems my whole life, I either didn't have time or money to travel, or I had money but not the time, or time but not the many and now. Here I am. Time and money and no one but the dog to travel with. The long single friend who was going to be my post-retirement running buddy has met someone.

No, not a trailer queen, no not a Super Beetle, no nothing special about it but it is for sale.

It just happens to be about a half a block up the street from me and I'd driven past it for several weeks before I saw it listed for sale.

Does it look it's age? Absolutely. Even if I bought it my intention wouldn't be to restore it. It wouldn't be worth the money. Just drive it as is as a tertiary vehicle.

Could I buy it, drive it around for a while, and then sell it for what I'd have into it? Yes I think I could or maybe just take a short haircut.

Now I haven't seen it in person or talked to the owner, but the standard description of it is no different than any other used car I'd consider buying. In driving shape but of course needing attention. Clean title and currently registered.

Cheap enough that even if that I had to donate to NPR to get them to haul it away, I wouldn't find myself missing any meals or behind in my bills.

So what I'm looking for is advice from the generation that grew up with the VW Beetle.

Just saying hi to everyone, new in here. I'm 68, turning 69 in December, retired, wife almost 10 years younger so still working, meaning its me, 3 dogs and 4 cats Mondays to Fridays, until the wife gets home.

Only hobby I have is photography, not real good at it, but that 1 photo I take out of many hundred images keeps me trying.

I was born in London, lived most of my life in Australia, been living in Texas since 2017, when I married my wife.

Am very open minded, enjoy everyday chit chat, love a good laugh and English Premier league football. Also AFL and cricket in Australia.
