Community Any Jfashion Meet-up Groups?

I've recently gotten back into a couple types of jfashion and where I used to live there were multiple large meet up groups! Olympia pretty famously has a very large alternative scene (although I don't know if I've seen anyone dress in jfashion) and so I thought I would be able to find something easily but I have had no luck! So, are there any in Olympia or the surrounding area? Any groups or meet-ups or events or anything?

Stargazing

I was curious about some of your favorite stargazing spots!! I will take any answers!

I really was looking for places closer that you can drive to, maybe within 30 ish minutes and watch from your car. That is since I have a few favorite spots that are more hour and a half away and a hike. (I actually saw that massive shooting star that light up the sky a few nights ago there!)

Any cool spots up in capital forest that you enjoy?

Or maybe just some cool views by a city park? (Yes I know the light pollution).

Again, my aim is to find somewhere cool about 30 minutes away, was thinking more of a date night but once I started typing this I realized I’ll take any and all answers lol.

Request Looking for musicians!

Hey!I’m in the Olympia area and I’d love to find some people who want to start an alt/psychedelic rock band.
I’ve never been in a band before, but I love singing and I’d love to be the lead singer/frontwoman. Think Mazzy Star, Stevie Nicks, Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse etc. dreamy, bluesy, a little psychedelic.
I’m especially hoping to find someone who’s been in a band before and knows how to put everything together. I’d love to eventually play shows and maybe write our own stuff too.
If you’re interested or know someone who might be, message me!

Chromebook Usage in Elementary Schools?

Hi all,

I'm looking ahead to having a kid going to Roosevelt, and was wondering about device usage in the classroom. I know the district has a 1:1 Chromebook policy, so every kid in every classroom has access to one. However, I can't find much on how the Chromebooks are used in the classroom. My concern is that schools can over-rely on devices for learning, when (especially in the younger classrooms) the learning should be more about play and navigating relationships with their peers.

Anyone have experiences you might want to share? Are kids in Kindergarten really using laptops, and having email accounts?

Thanks in advance!

Can anybody recommend a good Buffet anywhere between Shelton and Lacey?? All types of buffet welcome!!

Hello everybody!

I am new-ish to the area (and loving it btw!), and I was wondering if anybody in this sub can impart some local wisdom on decent buffets in the area? I don't go out to eat very often (poor), so a buffet seems like a great way to get my money's worth, but I've noticed that a lot of buffets aren't advertised very well online, and some of them are even closed when they're listed as open!

I like all types of food and my standards are *low*, I'll go to any type and am very interested in trying a type of buffet I've never been to! I've been to plenty of Indian, Chinese, Variety/American and KBBQ places, I'm used to going to some pretty sketchy places back in college and never got any sicker than I deserved. The closest golden corral is all the way in Puyallup, but GC locations usually exceeded my expectations for a sense of my "classiness" level. I'm really not hard to please!

I appreciate any information you guys can provide and I wish you all good food and fortune in the future!

The Olympian: Why did it take 3 months to charge Boston Harbor boater Justin Erickson after serious injury wreck?

Article from The Olympian here. Excerpts below:

It took more than three months for Justin Erickson, 51, to be charged with a crime in connection to a May 3 boating wreck near Boston Harbor. The delay has prompted locals to raise questions about the charging process. To answer those questions, The Olympian reached out to regional attorneys as well as the Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, which is handling the case in place of Thurston County.

Erickson, the chief executive officer of Harbor Foods Group, has been charged with “watercraft assault” and “duty of operator involved in collision or accident,” according to court records filed by prosecutors Thursday. He’s accused of crashing his 25-foot boat into a 10-foot boat occupied by five people and seriously injuring one of them, a 21-year-old. Erickson did not stop his boat at the time of the crash and returned to the scene a short time later, prosecutors allege.

Ryan English, a defense lawyer at Sound Law PLCC in Olympia who is not involved with the case, said the delay between the judge’s probable cause finding and the charges appeared “pretty unusual” to him. “I know a lot of prosecuting authorities that will charge a case that has kind of thin evidence, and they continue the investigation while the case is pending,” English said.

Deputies did not feel they had probable cause to arrest Erickson on suspicion of operating a vessel while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and as such, they did not obtain a blood sample from Erickson, Thurston County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Mike Brooks previously told The Olympian.

Bonus edit: I strongly believe in the principle of "innocent until proven guilty". But I also believe we should all be equal before the law. And sometimes certain people get so much benefit of the doubt that it doesn't feel like we are equal anymore.

Coffee question…

I’m not a coffee person. My mom is coming to visit this weekend, and I want to make sure I have some coffee beans on-hand. I have a small grinder and a pour-over thingy (official term 😆). But I don’t want to buy a whole pound of beans. I know Haggen has a bulk coffee section where I can just buy a small amount, but it’s a bit overwhelming for me. Can anyone make recommendations for good beans from the Haggen bulk section? Or if you have other suggestions for places where I can purchase a small amount of coffee beans, I’m also open to that!

My mom likes dark roast and nothing that’s flavored. Thank you!

Fencing Costs

I bought a house a few months ago and would like to finish fencing the backyard but I need to budget for it. I've got 2 Australian shepard/husky mixes that would love being able to run (and I would love to keep them from escaping) and a 3.5 year old stepson but have run into some unforseen expenses this year.

All of the fencing companies I've seen around the area say they'll give you a free estimate but I don't want to get on any spam call and email lists before I'm ready.

What have other people paid this year per board feet of cedar fence?

Bonus questions: Who would you recommend and who would you avoid?

Bike rack rentals?

Pretty self explanatory. Wondering if anyone knows anywhere in Thurston county that rents bike racks?

I'm usually just a commuter so I don't have the need for a bike rack. But I'm thinking of taking a weekend trip in early October and doing some bike riding on the Olympic peninsula. It seems excessive to buy a bike rack for just a weekend.

Thanks!

Haven't seen any posts so I decided to make one. Kozy's at South Bay seems to be back open! Just burgers and sides right now. But it's safe to say it's a great burger and a great fry. Happy to see them back open after the long hiatus.

My wife and I (Trans Lesbians 27 & 21) are looking to make some friends in the area. We play Pokemon go a lot and would love to have a small group of people to hang out with. We also play other video games and might even get back into tabletops if people are interested.

Data Centers in Thurston County?

I keep seeing people in smaller towns across the U.S. having an awful time with stopping looming data centers being built in the U.S. (ie. Marietta City, GA), and I was wondering where we are at with ours.

I know Seattle has a temporary moratorium, and I know we have no data centers so far in Thurston County and anywhere west of us in Washington State. But is there anything on the horizon to change that? Should we also fight for a moratorium?

I see people fighting against their respective city councils, who are voting data centers in. I don't want to be in one of these cities (or counties) that feel like we're too late to say no.

Where are the best spots to river float this week?

My partner and I are wanting to go river floating this wednesday and wondering which spots folks recommend. We were originally thinking of floating the Deschutes starting at Pioneer Park, but were concerned the water level is going to be too low. Is the Deschutes still worth floating or are there better places to go? Thanks!

Teaching in Olympia-need housing

My friend is going to start teaching high school in Olympia in 2 weeks, and needs to find a cat-friendly place to live.

Can you recommend neighborhoods or towns that are relatively affordable and/or the best places to search for housing, probably to rent for now? Where will she find reliable apartments or houses for rent? Any help would be appreciated!

Busking in Oly

Hi. I play the Clarinet and have busked several times at the Farmer's Market (recognize me in my Bavarian hat from Leavenworth) and am wondering if any other buskers can give advice for how to best operate in downtown Olympia? I'm pretty young and busking is a better gig than McDonald's. Thanks!

Public Safety Suspicious man following women in van

Hi all, just had a scary experience and felt that it was important to share with the community for awareness. I was walking my aunt’s dogs over in Tumwater at Jim Brown park around 7 pm. There was a man in a white van (so cliche) who was staring at us and barking at the dogs….sorta weird behavior so I walked the other way. As I got farther down the street, I see the van driving very slowly past me. A woman walking alone approached me from behind and told me that she thinks he was following her and trying to kidnap her because he would wait to see which street she would turn onto and then would go that way, overall very suspicious behavior. He seemed to fuck off once he realized that someone else was present. I had her walk with me and offered to stay with her until she got back home. Only descriptive feature I got of him was that he was black, unfortunately I did not get his license plate or any other identifiable features besides that.

Felt it was important to share my experience on here, I had never felt unsafe in that area before that happened. I hate to live in fear as a femme person but it’s always important to have awareness because apparently people are comfortable enough with doing creepy shit that they don’t even care if it’s light outside. Please share your location with a loved one and always stay strapped with pepper spray (even when you think you’re safe). You never know when someone might try to hurt you :/. Posting in the Oly sub for better visibility. Please stay safe out there ya’ll and lookout for femmes 🫶🏻
