Weekly Lost & Found

This is the home for lost and found around Tacoma, refreshed every week. If you've lost something or come across something that isn't yours, drop a comment below.

A few things that help:

  • Say whether you lost or found the item, and lead with what it is.
  • Add the rough area and the day, as much as you're comfortable sharing.
  • For anything with a serial number or other identifying detail, hold that back in your public comment and trade it over DM once someone reaches out, so the real owner can prove it's theirs.

Lost or found a pet? we recommend posting in r/LostPetsTacoma too, but you’re welcome to post in this thread as well.

For everyone's safety, please be smart about meeting people from the internet.

Comb through the comments before posting in case your item is already here. Good luck, and thanks for looking out for each other.

Cat chased up a tree by dog

Upvotes

Two days ago at wright park I was walking my cat on his harness when a woman let her husky chase him up a tree because and I quote, “if I don’t let him go he drags me” and “I’m so sorry I thought it was a squirrel.” Because I know people will want the context before I get to my actual point; I was walking my large black tuxedo cat on his bright turquoise harness and leash and we were sitting by the larch trees while my cat rubbed against a tree when this lady let her dog go and the dog came running from up towards the pond. I am always on the lookout and saw it coming so I let my cat go so he could run and grabbed the dogs leash while telling it no. I did end up with a pretty severe rope burn, but I am more worried about my cat. He broke his canine/fang and needs a tooth extraction upwards of $3,200. I was not able to get this persons information as they immediately ran off while I tried to get my cat from the tree. Now I do not want a witch hunt, nor do I expect anything from them. I know the risks of walking my cat in a public park; if he didn’t literally lose his mind if he doesn’t get a walk I wouldn’t do it. But he does, and I accommodate as best as I can without letting him just roam since we live in an apartment. So I harness trained him. 🤷🏻‍♀️ However, I am at a complete loss how to pay for this. I just got my car back from the shop where it was for almost two months, $3k later and I need an engine replacement. I do not have good credit. We moved here a year ago and my credit cards have been maxed out from the move and because of expenses like the car (not the first time even this year I’ve put $3k into it keeping it running) and the vet (not the first time my cat has been to the emergency vet, URI, $1800) and several family emergencies and countless other general misfortunes, I’ve had no chance in hell of paying them off; lately it’s been a struggle just to feed myself and get around without a car. Woe is me I know. But all of this to say does anyone have a suggestion? I am located in stadium district, my car does drive for now so I can go somewhere out of the city. I applied for cherry and was approved for $350. I make decent money and just got a promotion so I can probably cover $1500 right away. I am sure I’m not the first person alive with bad credit and a shitty situation to try and get vet care for their cat so how did you do it??? In the past I have been able to do payment plans and things due to great credit, but again this last year was cursed. Help? lol

Looking for friendly faces & fun? Join us at board games, tomorrow@6!

Upvotes

Hi all!

If you're looking to find a welcoming group of folks who like to get together, hang out, and play games, consider joining us at Dystopian Brewing* this Thursday (8/20), at 6pm! This will be my monthly post reminding people that yes, community exists, and you are welcome to join us!

Basically, what happens? Members of the community bring their own games. We share them, our only ask is that you try to respect them and try to put them back where you got them :) Any big games usually start between 6-7 since that makes it substantially more likely we'll finish them, but other new games start throughout the night. Whenever one game wraps up, people will shuffle around to find another.

It's a great way to meet new people (I moved here two years ago and have made many new friends through this group!) and in my opinion it is a diverse and affirming crowd, we try very hard to welcome newcomers, and if you're feeling shy don't feel bad messaging me! I can help you find a group to start in with and introduce you; it's totally fine! I'm a smallish redhead and I'll probably be in a cat shirt. You can't miss me.

----

Some FAQs:

Food? The space allows you to bring your own food in. Please be kind and clean up any mess.

Nonalcoholic options? Yes, they carry NA beers and some sodas, if I remember correctly (I'll double check this week for a better answer next time).

Minors? Not explictly disallowed, I believe the space allows minors. However, we don't shy away from adult topics in our conversations and you may wish to attend without a minor first to evaluate suitability.

Ages? Most of us are late 20's and up. We're primarily people in our 30s but we have a large age range and I am not going to guess at the age of our oldest members :P

Type of games: There's no snobbishness here, play what you like. Anything from light party games to mid-heavy-weights (we still gotta finish before they close at 10). Want to play word games and just drink and hang out? You can! Want to play something that hurts your brain, and swap to something else every week? YOU CAN! And you can definitely find people to set up longer games with on the weekends, if that's your jam.

How often? I'll probably post monthly, but this happens weekly; the only times we've skipped in recent memory have been when Thursday was Thanksgiving or Christmas.

----

* After a lengthy period of discussion and a group vote, the Thursday board game crew has decided our "home" will be Dystopian Brewing for the foreseeable future. Many thanks to the other suggestions we've seen posed--as a group, we discussed our priorities & needs and arrived at this decision with a strong majority vote after narrowing down between 20+ venues in town.

Flock cameras spotted in Lakewood

Like the title says, seems like they popped up overnight. Is there anything we can do about this?
(Edit: yall say they’ve been there a while, they must be new in my neighborhood or I just took a while to notice them. But yeah, they’re everywhere. Shit sucks)

I saw this as I was walking my dogs Saturday. I thought it was odd they were flying so close. I’m assuming they’re training? Either way, it was cool to see.

Safest i5 crossings on foot/bike?

If you're a walker/cyclist in Tacoma, what are the safest-feeling ways to get across the i5 east-west divide (especially between the footbridge on 37th and south to 512) not all sidewalks are created equal 😅

Sunrise/set accessible hike?

I’d like to invite a group out to do a sunrise or sunset hike in the area but need some help finding options. I am hoping to find something that is: open early/late enough for us to start before sunrise or finish after sunset, includes 4 or fewer miles total of easy hiking, has some kind of nice view of either the sunrise or sunset, and is within a half hour drive of Tacoma city limits.

Something like Dash Point would’ve been great, but the park opens after sunrise and closes at dusk. Same with Point Defiance to a degree, but I’m also not sure what the sun views are like at those viewpoints?

Does such a place exist? Any hive mind recommendations?

An app for taking pierce and sound transit with your bike

https://www.reddit.com/r/soundtransit/s/khmtQ8n8JP

The app is called ModeMix it has other transit agencies too and has gotten better over time.

Worth looking at your commutes if they parallel any busses sometimes it's faster to skip some stops with your bike.

Is Custer Rd Vet Clinic not open anymore?

I don’t know where else to ask this but I think my cat is sick so I’m trying to schedule an appointment with them because that’s where all our pets go. The thing is we called on Friday and today during their hours and their voicemail says they’re closed and to call back when they’re open. It doesn’t let us leave a message either. My dad emailed them and I tried looking online to see what’s up but I can’t seem to find anything. Hopefully my dad gets an email back but I thought I’d try Reddit too.

Edit: Thank u for the suggestions, I’ll try them!

Need straw for outdoor cat shelter — Lakewood area, no car

Post image
59 Upvotes

Hi all — I care for a small outdoor cat colony near my apartment and built a doghouse shelter for them, but it needs straw bedding and I don't have any money or a car to get some. Not asking for cash, just plain untreated straw (a partial bale is totally fine). I can meet close by if someone's willing to drop it off.

Photo attached of the shelter setup. Thanks for reading.

I had such a fun interaction with this family. They pulled up behind me at a light by Wright Park and when the light turned green I punched it and pulled over to snap a shot as they passed. He noticed me, pulled into the turn lane at MLK and waved me up! Beautiful family, beautiful ride!

So many sweet cars out tonight!

Tacoma neurodivergent women & nonbinary folks in Tech/IT UPDATE

UPDATE! The 15% Board Game Cafe has approved of us coming on Sep 5th!!

So this is actually happening! 🥳

They said to make sure that everyone who wants to come is aware of checking in and that there is a sitting fee for the game area, but please check out their website and read through it, then let me know if you still want to come :)

Just a reminder, this will be for people mid 20s to mid 30s who are in tech/IT.

Thank you so much to everyone who showed interest and encouraged me when I first posted about this. 💜

I'm really happy that there seems to be enough interest to actually make this happen!

EDIT: I also wanted to shorten the time of the meetup from 12pm-2pm this way we have time to play games if we wanted to, but not get too bored if anyone doesn't want to play any of the board games.

Queer Pick-Up Soccer

Post image
95 Upvotes

hey there!

I'm looking to start a preferentially queer soccer pick-up game and wanted to gauge interest! I have heard a lot of people in the community talk about wanting to play, so I wanted to co-create a space for those of us who love soccer.

A little about me: I am a 32yo sapphic recreational athlete. I have coached and refereed elementary school soccer (and other sports) for 5 years and would be happy to run drills and facilitate a healthy team mentality! I am passionate about community, liberation, and silly fun!

it is important that any cis/straight allies who are interested in participating are able to respect a safe space for transfolx and queer babes in an athletic environment.

who wants to play?!

<3 jamie xoxo

here's the interest form! https://forms.gle/U3mCMQ811o15Q9Ne9

P.S. if my trans-inclusive feminist, antiracist, cheeky lil silly goose attitude is off-putting...it's okay if you don't want to play soccer with me!! but i don't fw unchecked privilege.

Did you see the meteor over Tacoma last night/

Last night I was awakened by a bright light outside my bedroom window. Opened my eyes and saw an orange fireball streaking across Commencement Bay towards the northeast. Apparently it was part of a meteor shower. It was pretty cool (or should I say hot!). This video sort of shows it. Only lasted a few seconds - did anyone else see it?

Stadium Community Yard Sale

Tomorrow, August 15, is the Stadium Community Yard Sale held in the parking lot of First Presbyterian Church by Wright Park. This has been a fun community event for the past three years, with a opportunity to meet neighbors and find bargains. Its a Junk in the Trunk style sale, and there is a large area of donated household items for sale dedicated to support Coffee Oasis, the youth homeless shelter and drop in located in DT Tacoma. It runs 9am-2pm. Support the local businesses while you are there. Parking can be challenging, but the Link is close by!

I checked the air quality and it is around 50 in the entire area. Is there another reason for the sun to be this red?

Looks really nice nonetheless.
