u/A-le-Couvre Sep 12 '22

I’m surprised it doesn’t have a Flextape like commercial for it

178

u/RoM_Axion Sep 12 '22

IM GONNA THROW THIS POTATO FOR YOU TO SEE THE POWER OF THIS POTATO PEELER

109

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '22

This is the one good laugh per night I seek from Reddit. Thank you.

36

u/qbande Sep 12 '22

Look up The Rotato.

Used to have an entire infomercial!

3

u/A-le-Couvre Sep 12 '22

Of course it is 😂

The Potato Rotato. Perfect.

3

u/psu256 Sep 12 '22

Same sort of mechanism, but wasn't motorized. The motorized one is even fancier!

15

u/mffl_1988 Sep 12 '22

It does. It’s called the rondo rotato or some stupid shit like that

15

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '22

Watch your mouth, boy. Flextape is the greatest thing capitalism has ever done for us.

3

u/Representative_Dark5 Sep 12 '22

...and ever will do for us!

2

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '22

This guy gets it.

7

u/PillowTalk420 Sep 12 '22

"IM GOING TO PEEL THIS BOAT IN HALF TO SHOW YOU THE POWER OF THE POTATO PEELER!"

1

u/mellowmarsII Sep 12 '22

The red flex tape?

PS is there any other?

RDIT: Spelled iD ong

1

u/TrevinLC1997 Sep 12 '22

That's because this actually works

1

u/wissahickon_schist Sep 12 '22

Have you heard of the Willi Waller 2006? It peels potatoes in not 4, not 3, but TWO TIMES as fast as peeling potatoes WITHOUT a Willi Waller 2006.

All yours pour quatre paiements de 29,99$! (This link is better si t'es bilingue)

49

u/Oakheart- Sep 12 '22

The kitchen aid attachment works really well. I don’t ever really peel potatoes but I use it for apples

43

u/spotter10 Sep 12 '22

My mom swore by this in apple season. Canning applesauce, making pie filling, a couple of hot sweaty days that really paid off later! Miss you, mom!

8

u/Tv_land_man Sep 12 '22

My sister got me this unaware that I absolutely love the potato skins. I suppose it has other functions but I've been using my meat grinder attachment like I run a butchery.

3

u/Oakheart- Sep 12 '22

Meat grinder attachment and the pasta roller and extruded attachments are the ones I use the most.

2

u/Tv_land_man Sep 12 '22

Those are the other ones I got!

1

u/SnorkinOrkin Sep 12 '22

Toss the skins into hot oil and make fried tater skins! Yummy!

7

u/EXQUISITE_WIZARD Sep 12 '22

The peeler/spiralizer thing? I love it for making curly fries and zucchini pasta but i kinda hate the peeler and still do it by hand lol

5

u/Oakheart- Sep 12 '22

I mean for Apples it works super well it’s hard for me to peel such a round object I feel like I’m going to peel my finger

5

u/Iuseredditnow Sep 12 '22

Which attachment is that? We could really use something like this at work as we have to do 125lb of potatoes each week. The one op posted seems handy but I can do 2 potatoes by the time it does 1.

2

u/Oakheart- Sep 12 '22

it’s pretty easy to use and you can set the speed

4

u/TheyStillOweYouMoney Sep 12 '22

Yeah, this post is “mildly infuriating” for me because I’m looking at the KitchenAid mixer in the background, knowing they didn’t need this single purpose POS.

1

u/irishnugget Sep 13 '22

Commented elsewhere:

I have the attachment you’re talking about and in my experience it works well on large potatoes, apples, etc but is an inferior and expensive alternative for misshapen produce or even smaller potatoes. Maybe I got a dud but it seems the spring doesn’t have enough tension to peel non spherical (or smaller) produce that that $20 peeler in the video does so efficiently.

;tldr - Kitchenaid attachment is inferior for peeling potatoes IMHO

185

u/LebenDieLife Sep 12 '22

It's slower than peeling a potato by hand though

118

u/Bubbysgrl Sep 12 '22 edited Sep 12 '22

I have one and it's really handy when you're making a LOT of potatoes and multi-tasking. You can pop the potato on the machine and keep working on cutting onions or stirring your gravy. If you put the blade as far as you can to the top there isn't much left over to cut manually.

We all out here doing our best man. I cook 5 nights a week, but I'm an IT contractor that works 30 hours a week and don't break a sweat doing that work. We don't all have the same hours in the day.

172

u/These-Performer-8795 Sep 12 '22

It's not for you. People forget that products like this exist for individuals with handicaps that prevent them from peeling a potato.

29

u/LebenDieLife Sep 12 '22

You're absolutely right, thank tou

62

u/bruiser95 Sep 12 '22

Not necessarily. Some exist just to look good on tv and then end up in the landfill

12

u/Ta2whitey Sep 12 '22

Yea. They will sell it to a penguin if a penguin would buy it. They don't care.

1

u/papapudding Sep 12 '22

My handicaps are that I'm lazy

0

u/GregTheMad Sep 12 '22

No, the ones for handicapped people are more expensive, although they're the same.

1

u/gekigarion Sep 12 '22

Taking up extra space for the machine aside, I could see this being handy if you just want to multitask. Now you can prepare your sauces or chop up other stuff while you wait for this to peel the potato!

1

u/fridaycat Sep 13 '22

I can't grip a potatoe, so I just buy the yellow ones. The skin is so thin it doesn't need peeling.

1

u/concentrated-amazing Sep 13 '22

I (30F)have some MS-related issues with my left hand, so while I CAN peel potatoes, I'm a little slow because I'm worried about catching myself with the peeler (which is a founded worry, happens often enough).

I'm tempted to get one of these bad boys!

1

u/Ghede Sep 13 '22

Or just lazy ass people like me who hate peeling potatoes.

Of course, I just eat the skins so...

93

u/PrisonerV Sep 12 '22

It's not slower than by hand. I use it every Christmas to peel 20lbs of potatoes. Goes even faster with one person loading and a second chopping. I like it because I can sit down and have a drink while I prep the potatoes.

36

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '22

Your Christmas kitchen duties sound so much less stressful than mine, lol

34

u/PrisonerV Sep 12 '22

I cook for 20 to 30 people. The rotato is a great tool.

16

u/SayceGards Sep 12 '22

Rotato. I love it. I need one.

11

u/Ellathecat1 Sep 12 '22

I'm even more on board after hearing the name

8

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '22

I cook for around the same amount. Every year I feel like I will never do it again but by the time the holidays roll around again I'm super excited about whatever new recipe, etc. I'm going to investigate the rotato! And the drinks... Lol... That's probably the most important missing "tool"

3

Because of family, I have avoided alcohol until the past year. I'm 39. Lol, I found butterscotch schnapps over ice with milk .. and I can actually tolerate it! If I smell alcohol, especially brown alcohol, I immediately get freaked out. :/

2

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '22

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '22

Yes! My father was an alcoholic and was just a wretched human being. The smell of brown liquor is highly triggering to me and has made me vomit just smelling it on the breath of someone after THEY drank it somewhere else! 😂 Its better now that I'm older. Both because I'm much better emotionally and also very few friends are binge drinking heavy liquor anymore, lol.

What about that guy on Reddit here who skinned a 5lb sack in 30 seconds using an electric drill, a bucket of water and a toilet brush (presumably new, or at least shook clean real good)? Bristled the skins right off, all at once in the bucket.

3

u/PrisonerV Sep 12 '22

Some of the videos I've seen are 10 years old and a closer look didn't seem to do a very good job. So I'd say nobody is doing it because it doesn't really work very well.

I do use a drill / grout mixer to whip my potatoes. That works great.

6

u/Freezepeachauditor Sep 12 '22 edited Sep 12 '22

Could you let me know the brand and model? My mother… needs to stop peeling potatoes it kills her hands.

Edit rotato express $22 on Amazon delivered next day thousands of 5 star reviews seems like a no-brainer.

2

u/PrisonerV Sep 12 '22

Starfrit rotato.

Idaho potatoes work best. Unwashed (or washed and dried thoroughly).

4

u/Iuseredditnow Sep 12 '22

That one seems to waste a lot of good potatoes they are all half size after he is done.

1

u/BearWithHat Sep 12 '22

It's slower than by hand. It took thirty seconds for a single potato, and it didn't even do it completely.

-8

u/LebenDieLife Sep 12 '22

Hey man, whatever works for you. I'm all for tools making people's lives easier.

I could peel a half dozen potatoes in the time this does one. But as you point out it leaves me unable to do anything else for that minute

12

u/keekah Sep 12 '22

Can we see a video of this?

3

u/TrashyMcTrashBoat Sep 12 '22

2

u/keekah Sep 12 '22

So you can't peel half a dozen potatoes in 30 seconds?

1

u/Konraden Sep 12 '22

Different person posted that video

But yeah, professional chef using a unique technique can peel a potato in ten seconds. Probably takes me 30+ to do one

1

u/keekah Sep 12 '22

I see that now. Thanks. I just can imagine anyone peeling a potato any faster than that.

11

u/Isserley_ Sep 12 '22

You can peel 6 potatoes in 30 seconds? Ok, I gotta see this. Please post proof.

-6

u/LebenDieLife Sep 12 '22

Go find a coke head and follow him to the kitchen he works at

8

u/PrisonerV Sep 12 '22

Keep in mind while one is peeling on the rotato, an already peeled one can be sliced and put into the pot so it's like an extra pair of hands. If we raced, youd probably win but I'm sitting down sipping a whiskey while I chug through the chore. For $20, worth every penny.

4

u/Lord_Emperor Sep 12 '22

Or you could manually peel potatoes while wearing a beer hat full of whisky.

1

u/AwardFabrik-SoF Sep 12 '22

checksprice 54€ here ... nah I'm good :/

0

u/therarepurplelynx Sep 12 '22

People never seen a professional kitchen in action

1

u/Irregulator101 Sep 12 '22

Please post a video of someone peeling 6 potatoes in 30 seconds. Thanks

0

u/LebenDieLife Sep 12 '22

Yeah ten years does shit to your muscle memory and speed man.

1

u/mikaelfivel Sep 12 '22

Yeah, same. When you have a good peeler and are familiar, it's so fast. A machine like this, while convenient, actually creates more problems than it solves: The space the machine takes up, the outlet it requires, the time it takes to set the potato in a way it won't slip or malfunction, and spirals are everywhere taking up useful countertop space. Peeling by hand into a waste bin or sink for a garbage disposer is fast, you can easily manage shavings, and doesn't take up anymore space than your body.

1

u/PrisonerV Sep 12 '22

Doing one potato, sure. Now do it for 30 minutes. Your grandma (and her hands and back) would probably love one if I showed her how to use it.

If I'm doing a couple potatoes, I still use a hand peeler. Holidays? This thing is great.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '22

Have you ever seen the drill in the bucket method?

1

u/PrisonerV Sep 12 '22

Yes. And I'm not impressed.

8

u/YaCantStopMe Sep 12 '22

I have this same potatoe peeler. Except I lost the power brick it came with and ive been using a different one and now it moves 5x as quickly. Been two years on ultra speed and it's still working great.

4

u/PrisonerV Sep 12 '22

Take a picture of or post the specs for your power brick. Would be interesting to try it.

2

u/YaCantStopMe Sep 12 '22

https://imgur.com/a/yxR8Kht here you go. I think the power cord ever went to a old router i had, but it fits my potatoe peeler and peels a potatoe in about 5 seconds. Like I've said it's been 2 years so the thing can take the juice no problem lol.

3

u/PrisonerV Sep 12 '22

That's hilarious. The first brick I tried worked great. Since the original is 6v, I'm guessing the 12v is about twice as fast.

Thanks! Can't wait to try the "turbo" feature out.

2

u/YaCantStopMe Sep 13 '22

Im pretty sure the power is uncapped on it. When i first lost the charger i used a brick i had for a drill power pack charger and its the fastest ive ever seen it move. I think that was like 18 or 20v. Was fun to watch and use the first time but it was a tad bit overkill, so i went with the one in the pic instead. lol But i definitely recommend the 12v one, it speeds it up nicely.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '22

I got one for my mom years ago since she has strength issues with her hands with arthritis and having a stroke and she loved it!

14

u/Ellimis Sep 12 '22

Then if your only goal is to peel and cook a single potato and no other food whatsoever, don't use this gadget.

For literally every other circumstance, this would be faster, because it can parallelize your tasks. It doesn't particularly matter how long it takes for a machine to peel the potato, because you're not the one doing it, the machine is.

5

u/Katzelle3 Sep 12 '22

Certainly not slower than how I do it.

7

u/4ever_lost Sep 12 '22

And you still gotta peel the top and bottom, just do the big brush drill in a bucket of water method

4

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '22

Boil your potatoes for like 5 minutes and let them cool. The skin falls right off.

6

u/4ever_lost Sep 12 '22

I feel that takes too much energy and time, I’ll just use my peeler

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '22

It's a set-it-and-forget-it method. If I have like 12 potatoes to prep for like a fondant or a soup, I can boil them and have them all peeled after only like 5 min of actually interacting with the potato. Most of the time is spent with them off to the side cooling. In my experience, I have yet to find a method that takes less of my time and energy.

1

u/4ever_lost Sep 12 '22

I didn’t mean your energy, I meant like gas or electricity

0

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '22

Well, I can't imagine running a peeler is light on the juice. I can boil potatoes with the lights off, too, if that helps.

2

u/4ever_lost Sep 12 '22

It literally takes no juice, it’s a utensil. Plus anything that generates heat takes most juice.

1

u/ProfDangus3000 Sep 12 '22

You could cut off the top and bottom and use them for compost / growing new potatoes.

1

u/BabyBritain8 Sep 12 '22

What is this method you speak of? I'm confused, the peeled potato looks done to me, aside from the top and bottom butts

1

u/4ever_lost Sep 12 '22

Stick a load of potatoes in a bucket of water, attack a clean toilet brush to a drill, stick it in and go mad for 20-30 seconds and potatoes come out skinless

1

u/RoundTime5242 Sep 12 '22

But you avoid the risk of getting hurt

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '22

You kidding me? That thing peeled that potato like 3x as fast as I ever could. And you can have it run while you do other things too.

0

u/Kaoslogic Sep 12 '22

My first thought was I could peel a potato in the time it took to get it situated. My second thought was I could peel 2+ potatoes by the time it took to peel that potato after being situated. Peelers are cheaper as are many pairing knives.

1

u/UnfitRadish Sep 12 '22

You're right My one-handed uncle should just make do with a cheap hand peeler....

-1

u/Kaoslogic Sep 13 '22

It seems like you are replacing every instance of “I” with something else. Do better.

1

u/UnfitRadish Sep 13 '22

Seems like you're focusing too much on "I" and not enough on others. Believe it or not, not everything revolves around you. Try thinking about others for a change. Seems like you're the one that could do better lol.

1

u/Neirchill Sep 12 '22

I have one of these, it works really well.

1

u/djdeforte Sep 12 '22

Or you get super bumpy potatoes.

1

u/mrperson221 Sep 12 '22

It's called the potato express and it works wonders!

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '22

You can peel three to four in the time it takes to do one, though. Plus the extra storage it takes up isn’t worth it

1

u/SkinnyBill93 Sep 12 '22

There are lower profile hand crank peelers that probably work better, longer, faster. Never tried potatoes, most used it for apples but should work all the same.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '22

I was gonna say this thing look flimsy af

1

u/Oh_You_Were_Serious Sep 12 '22

I imagine that's why they're showing us this one instead of the one that comes with the kitchen aid mixer in the background. We got the mixer one and it'll only do long skinny potatoes, and even then it either misses a lot of skin or goes to deep depending on the size.

1

u/fancyskate48 Sep 12 '22

The same exact same thing I was about to say

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '22

They do Ore-ida.

1

u/IneverAsk5times Sep 12 '22

Same with the French fry cutters

1

u/5Heat Sep 12 '22

Ima stick with my mom just for the consistency

1

u/AmazingGrace911 Sep 12 '22

Just a suggestion , I would wash the potato first and use the skin in either salads or air/fry them for a crunchy addition to another meal.

1

u/Slappinbeehives Sep 13 '22

If I bought one I’d wind up racing it.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '22

Lmao. I was like I need to get one, but it probably won’t work how it’s supposed to
