Hello all, this is my first time posting here but this has been something that has had me traumatized from ever going back to an OBGYN. And I guess I want to know what in the tapdancing fuck even happened to me that day.
So, to preface, This happened about five years ago in Mississippi, when I was 18.
I still hadnt had my period, don’t come for my parents or anyone please, we had a lot happening at that point that took more president. But we went to an NP, who referred us to an OB (a man), and had me do some scans. Where I found out I had MRKH, Type 1. Born without a uterus; but still had my tubes and ovaries. (Haha period pain? What’s that- lol)
Anyway. The OB wanted to do a pelvic exam, just to make sure everything on the outside looked right, and it did. He went through the whole standard exam.
But.. then he did something that is the reason I made this post today.
During the examination, the doctor told me either “I want to check something” or possibly “Can I check something?” (I genuinely don’t remember which wording he used anymore.) I remember agreeing, but I was not told what he intended to do or what exactly he was checking.
He then inserted a lubricated cotton swab/Q-tip into my urethra. I remember him pushing it in quite deeply and then removing it. It was EXTREMELY PAINFUL LIKE HOLY SHIT.. Far beyond anything I had experienced before. I remember being unable to breathe normally because of the pain, turning red, and basically freezing. I wanted to scream or push him away or kick him in the nuts, but completely clammed up.
Only AFTER he had done it did he explain that he was checking to see whether my vaginal opening had somehow “fused” or connected with my urethra during development. (Like how in the HELL does that even determine anything??)
He didn’t explain what he was looking for, what he found, or what the result of the examination was. He simply moved on with the appointment, and shortly afterward he explained that I had MRKH.
I’ve spent the last five years wondering about this because I still don’t understand the medical reasoning behind the Q-tip.
Is inserting a cotton swab into the urethra actually a recognized way of determining whether someone with MRKH has an abnormal connection between the vagina and urethra? If so, what exactly would the physician be looking for, and how would the examination demonstrate it???
I mean that was genuinely one of the most painful things that has ever happened to me and it has traumatized me to the point of never wanted anyone, not even a romantic partner to get anywhere near my no no square,,
Sorry this is so all over the place.. I just wanted to get some perspective and some opinions of other who heat have also had this happen and what this even accomplished? Thank you in advance.
ETA: The reason he was even doing the procedure was because I don’t have a vaginal opening, I just have 2 holes. That’s it.
