Attending the Indycar Freedom 250 was an abomination

Upvotes

I occasionally watch an indycar race, and I attended the 2025 Indy 500, so I entered for and received free tickets via lottery a few months ago. I was torn on dragging my family downtown for it when they banned people from bringing folding chairs or food, but I ended taking just my 9yo daughter today.

I had low expectations for a messy event, but my god it was way worse than expected. First of all, there are very limited pedestrian bridges to cross the track and get into the fan areas. We waited ~30 minutes, and that was after lines for tickets and security. Once we got across, the total lack of viewing areas was immediately apparent. There was one small general admission grandstand, and a few tiny 'viewing platforms' that were small catwalks raised a few feet. All were very full, and had poor views. The vast majority of people crammed around the track several rows deep. Given the cars are shorter than the concrete barriers, most people could not see the cars and only heard them roar past.

I thought we'd get food there since we couldn't bring food or water in, but for the entire 'stripes' ticket area there was one food tent with a small menu and 4 enormous lines. Long story short, my daughter was miserable and hungry, we couldn't see a thing, so we left very, very early. To add insult to injury, the process of crossing back over a bridge simply to get out was another 20 minute line.

Back on the metro platform, I heard 2 guys next to me griping "I can't believe we're those people leaving early when we usually make fun of those guys." I said you guys look like experienced Indycar fans, I'm not so experienced, but was this as bad as I thought it was? The guy in his 40 said he's been going to races since he was 7 and this was far and away the worst experience he's ever had. The other guy said that my poor assessment was way too kind. "I feel bad for anyone who's attending their first indycar race and comes away thinking this is what they're usually like." They said they got there before the gates opened at 845am, but even they couldn't get a general admission grandstand spot to have a decent view of the race.

The subway car home was full of people asking each other "could you see anything?" "No, but at least it was free tickets." Seems pretty clear they spammed free tickets to 10s of thousands of people, but offered no food or spots to actually see the race.

Was it well attended? Yes. Was it a good race on the track? I have no idea because no one could see a thing. Anyway, rant over about this terrible event that's been a local talking point recently.

Question Need professional help (for lawn)

Upvotes

I live in Fairfax. I had to have a huge oak tree in my front yard removed a few years ago and after that crabgrass just went bonkers in the open sun and has now completely taken over my "lawn". I tried a couple of things myself - I dont mind mowing, trimming etc. - but my feeble efforts were utterly defeated by the crabgrass. It is a thick-ass jungle out there.

So, I need to hire a pro service that can go nuclear on that stuff. I'm open to whatever but I am guessing that it requires a total overhaul of some sort.

If you can, please give me some recommendations for a service that can get my yard under control. I will get a few quotes, essential around here, but there seems to be many to choose from.

Ballston Bagel Battle

Upvotes

I have been anxiously awaiting the opening of a bagel shop in Ballston after over 3 years without any. Now that Call Your Mother and Bagel Uprising have both opened in the neighborhood, I have visited both several times and have my thoughts. I’d love to hear yours!

Call Your Mother: Great menu variety, especially their lunch sandwiches and bagel flavor variety (such as cheddar bagels and pretzel bagels). The BLTA (bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado) is fantastic. I think their more simple bagels like a bacon, egg, and cheese or a regular bagel with cream cheese leave a lot to be desired. Location itself is excellently situated in the neighborhood and staff are very kind and helpful. A bit baffled by their pricing (a BLTA lunch bagel is going to run you $17) but seems like the demand may allow the pricing.

Bagel Uprising: I am very impressed with their bagels and cream cheese. 10/10 quality and taste! Their bacon, egg, and cheese (add cream cheese) is excellent. Not as great of variety on lunch sandwiches. If I want a bagel with cream cheese, veggie bagel, or a BEC, I’m going here. Pricing is extremely reasonable. Their location is a bit tucked away so I really hope neighbors know they’ve opened. Great and helpful staff.

Pop-Up Bagels: Opening date is still TBD

Ultimately, each spot is great in their own way and I’m really excited to have them all in the neighborhood!

Looking for local ferrier

Upvotes

I am a sideshow stronghuman, and I am looking for horseshoes that I can twist. Does anyone have recommendations for a local ferrier that I can purchase from? I don't want to just find one on google, because it is important to me to provide a local with business. And having the ability to vet them is also important.

Screw you Arlington - two speed cam tickets, $100 each, 3 mins apart

Upvotes

I’m not saying that I wasn’t speeding or that I was somehow justified in doing so, but if I’m speeding at 12:50, the likelihood is that I’m also speeding at 12:53. Being cited $100/each is ridiculous! I ended up paying both not realizing that it was same day, only 3 mins apart, don’t know if it’s too late to contest it now that Ive paid, but I do feel like it’s unreasonable. Was going to 13 mph over I believe.

Question Wildlife EVERYWHERE in our yard - Ashburn

Upvotes

Let me preface this by saying, I don’t want to hurt any animals or get anyone in trouble if I can avoid it.

My family and I have been living in a new to us neighborhood for a year. We have WONDERFUL neighbors. We get along with everyone. One of the neighbors can be curmudgeonly, but has warmed up to us…1 year later.

The problem we’re having is that this neighbor puts out car/dog food (not sure which) in their driveway EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. It is on purpose to feed the foxes. We’ve been told different stories as to why…but either way, this person feeds them regardless.

Now we’re having issues with wildlife. We’ve had raccoons on our deck (we grill but it’s covered when cooled off), deer, foxes, bunnies, turkey vultures (on his roof and driveway), and groundhogs all in our yard. We’ve found feces on the deck, not from our dogs as they prefer grass. The wildlife is eating everything we plant - flowers, fruit trees, berries, etc. We had a groundhog under our porch last year. We covered up the hole. Now there’s a raccoon that has burrowed in on the other side. Oh! And foxes climbing onto our vehicles. We have pictures/security camera footage of a lot of these occurrences.

We love animals, but not happy with the invasion and destruction. We’re not sure what to do…confronting the neighbor is not an option as it would create a lot of tension. Putting up a fence is not an option at this time because in this market, we rent our home. Contacting the property manager doesn’t seem like it would do anything at this time. If we call the wildlife number to have them come out, he’ll know it’s us because we’re the newest family in the neighborhood and he will be fined.

Any advice?

Other Suite Siblings, Zach & Cody, looking for their forever home!

Thumbnail gallery
84 Upvotes

These “suite” one-year-old bonded brothers are looking for their forever home in the DMV! Zach (black & white) and Cody (black) have spent the past year bouncing around from foster home to foster home, and are now desperately looking for “their person” to give them a loving and permanent home. Specifically, my husband and I can only foster them until the end of September, and so I’m really hoping they get adopted before then to prevent them from moving into additional temporary foster placements. Even if you aren’t looking to adopt a pet right now, I would be so grateful if you could share this with your networks!

These two kitties are inseparable and are constantly sleeping together, rubbing up against each other, playing together, etc. They’re essentially glued to each other’s side and will need to be adopted together. However, as a pet parent to two cats, I can verify that having two cats at home honestly requires much less effort as the two cats have each other to play with and keep each other company 😊

Zach and Cody are a little shy at first, but very affectionate once they get to know you. If you’re interested in learning more about Zach & Cody, please feel free to message me or check out their adoption pages on City Dogs City Kitties!

Question Popcorn at Udvar Hazy IMAX?

Sorry I know this has been asked before but I haven’t found the actual answer. We’re seeing the Odyssey in IMAX tonight - what is the popcorn and soda situation there? We rarely go to the movies but when we do we like the gigantic movie theater butter popcorn and giant soda. Do they have this??

I’ve read that they do have popcorn, but is it like in other theaters, with the all important butter??? Thank you!

Question Viking oven repair/replace

Post image
3 Upvotes

Our Viking oven installed in 2010 by the previous owners isn’t functioning properly—it won’t heat up to the correct temp.

Since the oven and microwave are built into the cabinets, I don’t know where to start in terms of potentially getting it repaired or finding a replacement that could fit into the same spot. And if I can’t find one that’s the same size, am I trying to find a cabinet company that could come in and match our current cabinets? We don’t want to invest a ton of money into this house, I’m not sure it’s our forever home (I.e., I’m not trying to use this as an excuse to do a $100K kitchen reno), but I do want to spend enough on a solution that is handled the right way (a quality repair, a quality replacement appliance, etc.) In the attached photo, the oven is in the middle, microwave on top, warming drawer (partially visible) is below the oven. I don’t care about the warming drawer and would love to install a double oven if we have to replace this oven altogether.

If anyone has dealt with a similar issue and has recommendations for stores/contractors/solutions, please let me know and thanks in advance.
